Nokia C3, C6 and E5 Launch!

Hello,

Today Nokia is pleased to announce the release of the Nokia C3, C6 and E5 devices. All of these devices come loaded with email, instant messaging and social networking capability out-of-the-box, and each boasts some very cool features. The Nokia C3 is the first Series 40 device to sport a full QWERTY keyboard and it brings all that you know and love about Nokia Messaging for Email and IM to Series 40 phones. The Nokia E5 has a ridiculously long battery life and the Nokia C6 brings together the best of touchscreen and keyboard in one device. All three feature WiFi as well. We’ve been playing with them for a little while now and think you will really enjoy them when they hit the market.

Now, we did notice some of the prelaunch speculation was around what was specifically happening with the Messaging services on Nokia devices. We’re flattered to have rumors floating around about us! So why does this launch matter if you are already using Nokia to access your email, IM and social networks today? A few things, we’re really excited because all these devices have Set-Up feature for Email, Chat and Communities right on the homescreen making it a one-click step to get all your favorite portals and communities on your device. Our capability to support an every increasing list of devices lets us reach even more users (especially through the Series 40 C3) bringing messaging for everyone closer to reality.

Messaging on Nokia devices is a Service, and isn’t tied down by hardware releases. If you’ve been following us over the past two years, you know we’ve continually evolved from a service that was available on only a few devices, was Symbian-only and didn’t come preloaded on any Nokia phones, to being available on over 50+ devices for email, covers Symbian, Series 40 and Maemo and comes ready to go right out-of-the-box.

If you’re already using Messaging today and you’re not looking for a new device, then we hope what you’ve seen from the Nokia C3, C6, and E5 will make you want to pick up one for a friend or family member. For all our existing users and fans – we’ve got plenty of fun stuff coming down the pipe in the next few months. These new devices let us get our Service out there for a lot more users, but don’t worry, we don’t forget about the ones we already have.

Nokia Messaging for Email – Final Winter 2010 Update

Hello,

The updated email client are now available at http://messaging.nokia.com, please visit the site on your Nokia to download the latest version. If you have an E75, E72 you don’t need a client update to get the new features like 100 emails per inbox, 50 emails per IMAP subfolder, and so on.

We’ve covered most of the features of the Winter 2010 update in the previous two posts. A few more things we’ve done: for one, Nokia Messaging will automatically consolidate accounts when the user adds an email address that belongs to another Nokia Messaging account. The Nokia Messaging website at email.nokia.com no longer contains a “forgot password” function, This release of Nokia Messaging now always aligns the Nokia Messaging password with the Email Service Provider (ESP) password. Users can now simply enter either their Nokia Messaging password or their current ESP password during authentication. If the authentication succeeds and their Nokia Messaging password is different from the ESP password, the account will be updated and the current ESP password will become the Nokia Messaging account password.

We’re reading all your comments and appreciate the feedback. Thanks for your support,

Nokia Messaging for Email – More Winter 2010 Updates

Hello,

We’re moving faster than we thought we would! We are pleased to announce a significant service change on Nokia Messaging for Email that we think many of you will appreciate. We’ll be rolling out a significant change to how we store emails coming directly out of your feedback.  You don’t need to do anything to get this update – we’re going to be rolling it out to all users by Wednesday.

Here are the highlights of the release:

  • Changes email storage for Inbox from ‘previous three days’ to ‘previous 100 emails’
  • Changes email storage for IMAP subfolders to 50 emails per subfolder

This change was largely driven by your requests coming from the support forums, blogs, emails, tweets and comments.

We received plenty of requests from our users that the “remove older than three days of email” setting was confusing. Now, Nokia Messaging for email stores the previous 100 email messages for every email account you use, along with 50 emails from each IMAP subfolder you’re subscribed to. We think this will make things significantly less confusing especially for your IMAP subfolders, which would hide themselves if you didn’t have any messages inside them in the previous 3 days.

To preempt one more question we always get when we do a Nokia Messaging for Email update: We do have something in the works specifically for N97 users in regards to memory usage. We have made small improvements in each release and will have more details on our continued improvement there in the coming months. We appreciate your feedback and your patience.

This release also includes a number of reliability, stability and setup improvements designed to improve your user experience. We are getting better and better but know we still have room to grow and improve.

You can get the most up-to-date clients by Wednesday (we will post when they’re available) at http://messaging.nokia.com. Some phones like the E75 and E72 have the integrated multiprotocol client and don’t require an update. The site will not give you a “Download” option if you don’t need one.

Thanks for your support,

-The Nokia Messaging Team

Nokia Messaging for Email – Winter 2010 Update Begins

Hello,

We are rolling out an update for Nokia Messaging for Email over the next few weeks – the first piece being a client update for S60 5th edition devices. This update is available as “Nokia Messaging 10.2” in the Software Update application on your phone.

To answer what will likely be a popular question – “but, what about my device”, we are going to be rolling this client for S60 3rd edition on messaging.nokia.com in the next few weeks and we will let you know when it’s available on this blog. We’ve also got some server-side features in the works that we’ll be discussing shortly. Nokia Messaging is truly a service: continually evolving and adding features.

Here are the highlights of the client release:

  • Localized in 38 languages
  • Support for Destinations on S60 5th edition devices
  • Improvements to on-device-setup wizard
  • Deleted items folder now automatically empties itself, faster client deletions
  • Various bug fixes

We’ve also heard many S60 5th edition users’ feedback about Destinations support, which we also added to this release. Using your devices’ Destinations feature, you simply add your preferred WiFi access points to the Internet Destination (or any other Destination that you configure), and Nokia Messaging will automatically switch to it when it’s available.

We also have made several improvements to the setup wizard, based on analysis of where users typically encounter errors during setup. Another area we’ve made improvements is in deletion handling – the ‘Deleted Items’ folder will now automatically clear emails older than three days that it previously kept, and deletions are snappier in the client in this release. Finally, we’ve fixed a few nagging bugs including restoring “Send with Nokia Messaging” from the Gallery, and you can now properly attach files from the N97’s memory card.

If you’re curious about version numbers – they’re admittedly a bit confusing. S60 5th edition will see 10.2.04 as the version number in the client. On Software Update on your device, this release will be identified as 10.2. We apologize for the confusion and are continually working on making things easier.

We truly care about your feedback and listen closely to the 7000+ fans on our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as support questions on the forums linked from http://messaging.nokia.com. Please check out the site for answers to your questions and we encourage you to continue telling us what you like, what you don’t and what you want to see next. This is only the first of many exciting updates and development from Nokia Messaging in 2010.

Thanks for your support,

-The Nokia Messaging Team

Nokia Messaging for Social Networks Beta 2

Hello,

Warm up your Twitter fingers, the latest Nokia Messaging for Social Networks beta has now added support for Twitter, making tweeting even more convenient from the homescreen of your Nokia handset.

Back in September 2009, we introduced the first iteration of the social networking beta that let people view, post, and comment on messages, share their location and status while keeping up with their Facebook friends right from their Nokia handsets. This was only the start. The majority of the feedback given by beta testers was to add support for other social networking communities (Twitter, done! More to come!) Testers also asked for enhancements to the Facebook functionality. We took your advice and have added these new features:

  • Upload pictures and videos
  • Events: View upcoming events, birthdays and import to device calendar
  • Search friends
  • Click-to-call / click-to-SMS / click-to-FB Email

We invite you to download and test drive this social networking client from Nokia Beta Labs. This is an early preview, currently available on Nokia N97, Nokia N97 Mini, and Nokia 5800 devices, we will support more devices in the future. We also invite you to visit http://messaging.nokia.com to see what’s available for your device from Nokia Messaging.

Nokia offers free lifetime global navigation and makes in-car navigation an absolute breeze

Nokia has started to ship its latest smartphones to Oman with a free car holder, charger, and preloaded Ovi Maps in the sales pack, making in-car navigation an absolute breeze. Nokia’s walk and drive navigation is free on its smartphones as part of a new version of Ovi Maps, also available for download at http://www.nokia.com/maps for existing Nokia users with compatible smartphones.

Navigation packages are now available for the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia E52, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator and Nokia X6. All new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet travel guides at no extra cost. Existing compatible Nokia devices that can download the new Ovi Maps are Nokia N97 mini, N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia E52, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic Nokia 6720, Nokia E71, Nokia E66, Nokia X6, and Nokia N86.

Nokia’s mapping and navigation software has been specifically designed for mobile use and is based on unique hybrid technology. The new version of Ovi Maps will include all essential car and pedestrian navigation features, such as turn-by-turn voice guidance for 78 countries in 46 languages, and traffic information for over 10 countries, as well as detailed maps for over 180 countries. The maps also include 8,203 points of interest for Oman.

“We want to make using your mobile for navigation as familiar as using it to send a text or take a picture. We believe that making the best maps with voice guided navigation available for free will be the catalyst to do this,” explained Tarek Zaki, Solutions Manager, Navigation, Nokia. “Why have multiple devices that work in only one country or region?  Put it all together, make it free, make it global and you have something that is truly useful and can help you get round almost any city in the world whether you’re on foot or driving.”

Six key features that sets Ovi Maps apart:

  1. 1. No hidden costs

The new version of Ovi Maps comes with all the maps and high-end, car grade navigation features you need for free and is yours to keep for the life of the smartphone. No additional licenses needed for extra countries, regions or services like traffic information or city guides.

  1. 2. Best global coverage

You take your mobile with you wherever you go in the world so, as standard, voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers is available for 78 countries in 46 different languages and there are maps for over 180 countries that can be downloaded via ovi suite. This gives you the best maps with the largest global coverage for free.

  1. 3. No network connection required when navigating
Avoid expensive, battery-draining network connections with Nokia’s unique hybrid technology. Maps can be pre-loaded on to your Nokia smartphone so you can set Ovi Maps to offline mode, saving battery power, and the navigation system will still work. This is particularly useful for those worried about data connection costs when travelling abroad or when you are travelling through areas with little or no network coverage.
  2. 4. Unique hybrid technology
Ovi Maps is built on an advanced technology called hybrid vector maps. Vector maps are high quality but less data intensive and allow you to continue to navigate even if you lose your network connection. This means that maps downloaded or updated across a network connection are about half the size of bulky bitmaps used by other mobile map providers. The hybrid technology ensures that, unlike other providers, any downloaded map data is stored on the device for future use.
  3. 5. Voice guidance
Turn-by-turn, voice guided navigation comes free for both drivers and pedestrians. For drivers this includes lane assistance. For pedestrians this includes shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones for over 100 cities around the world as well as 6000 3D landmarks in over 200 cities to help you find exactly where you are.
  4. 6. Share location to facebook and other premium services:

The new ovi maps allows you to share your location to your facebook straight from your mobile.  In addition , ovi maps also gives you online weather forecasts and lonely planet guides for over 1000 destinations

Ovi Maps in your Own Voice

If you like the sound of your own voice, or are simply fed up of being told what to do, then Own Voice for Ovi Maps is just for you. Own Voice lets you record and share your own navigation instructions for Ovi Maps, directly from your Nokia. Simply download the app to your device from ovi store and as quickly as you can say various versions of “Turn left in 200m” 53 times, you’ll have your very Own Voice pack for navigation.
The Own Voice app lets you create a new voice pack, taking you through each step of the process. To kick things off, find a quiet space to record, then let the app take you through each of the 53 required commands including my favourite “You have reached your destination”. When you’re done recording, you simply add your name, hit save and the voice pack is uploaded to the Own Voice website.

The All New Nokia 5235 Comes With Music Service for the Middle-East.

Nokia announced the arrival of its newest device featuring the Comes with Music service to the Middle East: the Nokia 5235 Comes with Music. Following the launch of the Nokia X6 Comes with Music edition in February, the new device comes to complement the range offering, giving consumers a wider choice to enjoy the revolutionary Comes with Music service.

“The new Nokia 5235 Comes with Music edition is a fantastic device that allows access to millions of tracks for download. Adding this new device to the Comes with Music offering ensures that we are giving consumers more choice and wider access to this fantastic service,” said Frederic Copper-Royer, Music Manager, Nokia Middle East and Africa.

He added, “Since the launch of the Nokia X6 Comes with Music in the region, we have seen a lot of interesting trends emerge through the usage of the service.  For example, approximately 54% of downloads are being done through the PC, while the remaining 46% are done directly to the Nokia device.  Interestingly, approximately 40% of all music downloaded is Arabic music.  In terms of overall popularity of genres, international pop music leads, followed by oriental pop, RNB, Khaleeji, and Hip-Hop.”

Comes with Music is a revolutionary way for people to discover and enjoy music. The proposition is simple: you get four million tracks, for free, for keeps.  When you buy the Comes with Music edition device, you get 12 months of unlimited access to millions of tracks for download from the Ovi Music, which hold a wide array of genres.  You can enjoy the music on the Comes with Music edition device or your dedicated PC.  The songs are yours to keep. So after the year is complete, the licenses do not expire and you can continue to enjoy all of the music that you’ve downloaded.

With the support of up to 16 GB of additional memory, the new Nokia 5235 Comes with Music device allows you to store up to 3,400 of your favorite tracks.  The device is 3.2” in size and has a full touchscreen display.

Nokia X6, worth listening to … YES!!

It’s been 2 weeks running around and doing everything the Nokia X6 (Special thanks to IPN & Nokia). Calling, Socializing, chatting, mailing … got the device on max output.

The Nokia X6 is a change from the usual Nokia resistive touch devices; Nokia finally gave in and put a capacitive touch screen. Was it a good idea? Maybe.  I say that because, the UI is still based on the stylus platform and some of the options and the way to go through the phone don’t comply with the edge of your thick finger. Needless to say, a firmware update can fix the issues of UI touch and make it compatible with the device. Having the N97 from it’s birth, I can spot the fixes made on the N97 UI but not transferred to the X6 Series.

The only issue I faced with this device is during phone calling. I was really shocked when my phone kept going to speaker mode when I was talking. Then after a few seconds it clicks to me that there was no proximity sensor on the front of the device. What happened guys? This is capacitive; it’s even more sensitive than resistive. A proximity sensor is priority number one. Please note that it doesn’t happen all the time, but it does.

The on screen keyboard is right in size, did not have any issue typing in text messages and looooooog emails as I usual send. It actually felt well designed, types like a normal qwerty.

The best feature Nokia has made available for this mobile device is “Comes With Music”, now I’ve heard of some people having issues setting up their Music Store on their computers. I had no issue what so ever, click click I was in. Activation of the account was easy and downloading your favorite tunes was seriously a click away. Nokia has truly touched an area where most of my research group I asked about ‘comes with music’ all had the same answer, now that’s your money’s worth.

“Comes With Music” or CWM, has made the X6 to me a phone worth buying and enjoying. It fits all tastes and you can conduct most of your business as usual with its mobile computing abilities. So far I have downloaded all my favorite oldies, which I enjoy while working. The battery life is acceptable, where I would have to stick it in the charger before I sleep.  Now I’m not the best battery consumer out there, I’ve got my work email, personal email(s) on push. 3G available all the time, Socializing – Facebook and Twitter and the list goes on. If you’re a music lover and truly relies on their music because they have an open plan office the X6 16GB or 32GB is a great choice.

Daily handling, the size of the X6 fits in most pockets and it is light in weight. Ive had no issues with keeping it in my pocket and using my BH-904 Bluetooth headset. It’s worth listening to …

Apple iPad & MicroSIM

Yes i know to most of you out there this information about the iPad using a MicroSIM is not new to you, but for most of you in the Middle-East hungry for an iPad in your hands; HOLD YOUR HORSES!!! Let me first say that 100% of all GSM operators in the world use the default SIM size. Now good old Steve has given a nudge to the telecom operators around the world.

Apple’s big reveal of 2010 was the glorious iPad, some have given their critical analysis of the device. I say the device will pick up like any Apple device in the market. Now the jolt that the mobile industry got was that the iPad uses a MicroSIM enable it to use 3G. Apple’s tie or (love/hate) relationship with AT&T gave it a heads up on orders of MicroSIMS to deliver its service to its customers in the US.

So what is the (MicroSIM) : The 3FF SIM card, or the micro SIM, is 52% smaller than a regular SIM card so instead of a 15 x 25mm card you get a 12 x 15mm one. It’s still a GSM SIM so it will work in most markets. Now I believe Apple’s attempt to lock the SIM during the iPhone launch days blew up in their face.

Last, This MicroSIM isn’t an industry stopper is it. Well no, most operators are going to offer a this MicroSIM as a bundle package with the iPad. I say why bother, request a twin SIM from your local operator, shave the new SIM with plastic or acrylic filer and your good to go. Haven’t tested it myself, I will surely let you know if it works as soon as my iPad lands.
