WebGL for Android 4.0 is open source; Treat to Developers

Sony Ericsson decided to release the WebGL implementation for their coming Xperia smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and above as open source.

Earlier in November 2011, they announced they are the first to support WebGL in the native Android web browser. Since then, there were feed backs to Sony Ericsson demanding the wider deployment of WebGL in Android. As a result, Sony Ericsson decided to publish the WebGL implementation for Ice Cream Sandwich as open source.

This is nothing interesting for the casual android users but it’s something for the developers out there.

Sony Ericsson has explained all the requirements for enabling support for WebGL in Android 4.0. If you’re interested, take a look at their blog post.

What is WebGL?

WebGL is a low-level API JavaScript API defined by the Khronos Group. The API is based on OpenGL ES 2.0 and enables support for 3D graphics. WebGL enables application developers to take advantage of capabilities provided by graphical processor units which is a standard component on all modern smartphones. For end users this means that they will be able to enjoy more interactive and responsive applications without any installing any plug-in modules in the web browser.
