Today, we are happy to announce the Xperia™ P, the latest addition to the Xperia™ NXT series of next generation smartphones from Sony. Xperia™ P offers an ultra-bright viewing experience thanks to the introduction of WhiteMagic™ screen technology, and comes with a 4” Reality Display housed in aluminium, unibody design for a sleek look and feel. Xperia™ P also introduces the new ST-Ericsson U8500 platform, which provides a 1 GHz dual core processor with SMP technology for high-end performance. Plus, Xperia™ P gives you an 8MP capture camera, full 1080p HD recording & front camera, NFC, and a ton of other features. Read on to get the full story.
Xperia™ P follows the Xperia S as the next Sony smartphone in the Xperia NXT series. It has a 1 GHz dual core ST-Ericsson processor for superior performance – the NovaThor™ U8500. Offering the latest SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) dual core technology with a high-end 3D graphics accelerator, the U8500 enables a full web-browsing experience for this Xperia NXT smartphone. Xperia™ P will be launched on Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform and will be upgraded to Android™ 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) during the second quarter of 2012.
Standout features –WhiteMagic™, unibody design
Xperia™ P is the first smartphone that introduces Sony’s WhiteMagic™ technology, which, depending on the content shown, doubles the brightness of the LCD display while consuming 50% less power than existing units. To achieve this, the technology uses an algorithm that adds a white pixel to the Red-Green-Blue pixels used in LCDs (Liquid Crystal Display). Although the addition of a white pixel tends to result in deterioration of the image quality, WhiteMagic™ analyses the input picture data and performs suitable signal processing – the result is a deterioration-free display. We will soon publish a separate article on how WhiteMagic ™ works, so stay tuned.

Xperia™ P is housed in a solid, anodised aluminium body, sealed with a glass display. A transparent glass element illuminates to notify you about incoming events. The housing is forged using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining to ensure tight tolerances and precise construction. The result is a device that is tailored for a natural fit for your hand, and a look that is distinctive, yet minimalistic in design.
Additional connectivity features
Xperia™ P is NFC-enabled, allowing you to share content with other NFC devices and enjoy an increasing number of NFC applications and services, as well as Xperia SmartTags. Xperia™ SmartTags are a new kind of accessory that can launch a number of pre-configured profiles in the phone. As with our other NFC-enabled smartphones (Xperia S and Xperia ion), Xperia™ P support for NFC will allow you to develop apps that can easily enhance the user experience of social media and entertainment. For example, users could tag friends in a photo, or initiate multi-player games by tapping their handsets together. It’s also easy to connect with Xperia™ P. Simply plug it into the HDMI port of your TV to enjoy it on a big screen. A single swipe of the display lets you view and share content between TV, tablet and PC, thanks to DLNA technology.
Xperia™ users can also take advantage of the Sony Entertainment network to access all types of premium content. With these services available in a growing number of markets and across a wide range of Sony devices, including PlayStation, VAIO and Sony Tablet, the entertainment experience is accessible anytime and anywhere.
Availability and colours
Xperia™ P will be available to consumers globally in the second quarter of this year. The available colours are silver, black and red.
