Xperia Details: Design

Tom Waldon, small headshotSony Mobile design language, we call it OmniBalance design; the underlying principle behind our creative approach. Yes, it’s a visual and form language that describes how our products look and feel, but it goes much further than that. It’s a philosophy that helps us define how we approach new products and ideas. It influences how we balance design and user experience with technology and manufacturing realities. It’s a principle not only used across our smartphone domain, but one also applicable to how we approach SmartWear and other companion products.

In essence, OmniBalance design is fairly self explanatory – we are creating a design that’s beautiful from every angle, and also comfortable to hold. It’s all about building on symmetry, balanced proportions and distilling out an essence of form for an aesthetically pleasing product. On a deeper level, all design is about balancing the demands of user experience, technology and manufacturing. The task of the team is finding the magic harmony between these elements. We don’t believe one factor should take precedence – everything must be in balance. This way, we can create a product that fits seamlessly into your life, and brings the latest technology within premium materials to a global market.

The main challenge we faced with Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact was in how we could evolve the design language, refining and perfecting the already familiar Z Series. People trust what they are familiar with and we didn’t want to depart too far from our previous direction. At the same time, we wanted to create products that felt fresh and new. In the end, we achieved this by taking some of the elements that we had pioneered with Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2… and refined the details to develop a number of changes that feel different… distilled. For example, in Xperia Z3, we’ve smoothed out the edges; simplifying the power button assembly and port covers to reduce visual and tactile clutter, for a cleaner look and feel. We’ve also introduced a new “soft corner” that can better handle impact, without damaging the device.

The big visual change though is in the colour range. For Xperia Z3 we’ve introduced two new, sophisticated metallic finishes; a warm copper that blends earth tones with a metallic edge and a muted silver green. Both are designed to provide something extra over the traditional black and white without losing the premium, sophisticated feel. In Xperia Z3 Compact we went a bit further with brighter and more intense colours to create a look we call “fresh and frosted” – these include a bolder green and a mandarin, that we’ve called “orange”.

Our journey to understand and learn more about our users, and the way we bring it to bear on our products will remain – so we’re excited for the new Xperia devices to launch in market and see / hear that feedback for ourselves.
