Under the Xperia chassis – Travis Lanier, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. [guest post]

Hi all – Travis Lanier here, heading up Qualcomm Technologies’ CPU Product Management. I’m excited to have the chance today to tell you a little bit about our ongoing collaboration with Sony.

Flagships Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z run on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro Processor – and our team worked closely with Sony engineers to match Sony software/hardware with the S4 Pro.

We often throw a mantra around the office – “Qualcomm Technologies’ processors are the parts you look for, but those you can’t see”. Rough translation: whilst the physical processor tech isn’t necessarily visible, you can “feel it” through all the things it allows you to do with your Xperia smartphone.

Here’s how the chip let’s you do more of those things:

CPU

Custom designed, our CPU microarchitecture is designed to deliver maximum sustained performance within the power and thermal constraints of mobile form factors.  While others may be able to design high performance CPUs, Qualcomm Technologies takes the lead with its ability to squeeze that performance into the demanding real world constraints of small, thin, always-on devices.

Our CPU uses asynchronous symmetric multiprocessing (aSMP), tech that throttles the frequency of each CPU core independently. Xperia Z, ZL and Xperia Tablet Z are quad core devices – each core knows when to work on its own or with another. It’s smart efficiency – no small task wastage, and adequate power for the more demanding stuff like games and movies.

Graphics

Graphics aren’t just essential to mobile gaming, but also to the broader mobile experience – things like browsing and UI customization. Our graphics processing unit (GPU) is designed and built into the S4 Pro chip.

The GPU accelerates complex geometric rendering for console-like graphic performance – blitzing the most demanding mobile games, UIs, browsers and other graphic-heavy apps. Because our GPU is so advanced, we’re working with gaming studios across the globe to optimize titles for Snapdragon devices – Sony has *somewhat* of a heritage in gaming, so exciting times ahead. :)

Connectivity

Most of what your Xperia can do is often dependent on what it’s connected to (Android tablet, TV or laptop) – Xperia Tablet Z is the most connected tablet out there, so Sony really pushed us to help truly accomplish that.

As a quick example, the S4 Pro was the first mobile processor with a built-in 4G LTE modem – so Xperia Z, Xperia ZL or Xperia Tablet Z gives you quicker downloads, smoother browsing and less-lag-streaming. As the modem is integrated into the processor, your Xperia device is designed to switch between 4G LTE & 3G without dropping a call or losing a connection!

Sony has a great heritage of pushing the envelope with new technologies and aggressive form factor devices which aligns well with Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon processors.  We’re really excited about the past, present and future with Sony Mobile – be sure to follow @Snapdragon for all the latest Snapdragon news, and learn more about our processors at Snapdragon.com.

Thanks to Travis for his time – Ant.
