Sony Ericsson tried their level best to compete in the market with the Windows OS, Symbian and Android. Despite all this, the company suffered great financial loss last year. This might be the reason for Sony to think differently. The company’s upcoming CEO has hinted that they have plans to expand the Vita OS to smartphones and tablets. Phones running on Windows mobile and Symbian failed to bring any joy to Sony Ericsson but the case was different with Android. Since they released the Xperia arc, their smartphone sales showed decent figures and hence it’s hard to believe that Sony will ditch Android just to pave the way for Vita OS. However, it’s evident from Yoshio Matsumoto’s comment that they are eyeing on Vita OS for smartphones.
“If you’re asking if we’ve made it in a way that’s expandable, so that it’s possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices — it is possible. That doesn’t mean that we’re applying it to smartphones and tablets at this point in time, but it’s been designed with expandability in mind.”
It’s obvious that it won’t happen any time soon but we wouldn’t like to see Sony completely getting rid of Android because we love the Xperia series and the company’s Android customizations. They should really account the fact that android did really boost the sales and if they can fine tune the OS, the sales can even get impressive.
People who hesitated to buy a Sony Ericsson justified that the company lacked quality and reliability. Now since the take over of the joint venture, they think the other way.
