After the great news for X10 users, Sony Ericsson goes even a step further and does the unexpected. Although users of the 2010 models are out of luck this time, users who purchase one of the 2011 models, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ pro and Xperia™ PLAY will certainly be full of joy.
Karl-Johan Dahlström (Senior Program Architect at Sony Ericsson) announced on the Sony Ericsson Developer Blog that new Xperia™ devices will have an unlockable bootloader which will allow for unsigned firmware images to be ran on these devices. He also revealed more in-depth information about the whole process.
Only SIM Free devices will be bootloader unlockable. In order to unlock the bootloader, the user will have to retrieve a key online, which entered in Fastboot mode will allow unlocking of the bootloader. Such devices will have the warranty voided, so any warranty repairs may be charged.
Have you changed your mind about buying one of the new Sony Ericsson products? I certainly have!
