SE Hands-On With Xperia arc
The SE Product Blog has posted up a hands-on video showing off the Xperia arc. Apart from the video, which is of course worth a watch, there was mention made of Android, specifically which version will be in use and updates.
The 2.4 version seen at CES is being labelled as a ‘misconfiguration’. Whatever that means the bottom line is that the arc will ship with Gingerbread 2.3. However, and perhaps more importantly, mention was made of the upgrade cycle:
It’s too early to officially give detailed comments around specific later Android versions for XperiaTM arc during its lifecycle but the changes we have made to our way of working with Android puts us in a good position to make sure that Xperia arc will get later versions in a timely manner.
Two things to take from that quote: i) Sony Ericsson know they screwed up big time with the X10 and the ridiculous Donut to Eclair update debacle and ii) the Xperia arc will be updated e.g. Ice Cream in the summer perhaps?
At any rate it’s definitely a positive sign and one that addresses one of the, if not the single, biggest issue with the X10.
Other highlights from the blog posting:
- No front facing camera so no video calling I’m afraid
- Mediascape, as it was on the X10, is gone, replaced by a customisable ‘media pane’ widget (shown in the video)
- The CPU is a MSM8255 running at 1 GHz whilst the GPU is an Adreno 250 affair
