Getting started with your new 808 PureView

Nokia 808 PureView

The Nokia 808 PureView is now shipping from Amazon.com and many are receiving their shiny new 41 megapixel-equipped phone this week. For those fresh to Symbian, the 808 PureView might be a new experience. We’ll walk you through how to set up your new 808 PureView and get it up and running in no time.

Get your Nokia account

When you power on your 808 PureView for the first time, you are greeted with a few screens that have you specify your location, language and time settings. After this, you’re given the opportunity to input your Nokia account credentials.

If you have your Nokia account credentials handy, be sure to insert them here. If not, head to account.nokia.com and sign up for your account. Doing so will allow you to use your account to make app purchases in Store and synchronize your locations in Maps..which is very handy going forward.

Connect your email and social accounts

Email optionsThe 808 PureView is designed, like any smartphone, to be the hub of your communications. Be sure to set up your email accounts straight away. You can access these settings by hitting the menu button and selecting Mail.

From there, you can configure your email accounts with easy support for Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and virtually any other provider.

On my 808 PureView, I have two Gmail accounts set up along with my work Exchange email through ActiveSync. I even have my work calendar and contact list constantly updating so I’m current, even when I’m not physically in the office.

Aside from email, using Nokia Social will connect your phone to Twitter and Facebook.  Be sure to configure Facebook so you have one-click access to upload those amazing photos you snap on the PureView directly to Facebook to share with friends and family.

You can access Nokia Social by  selecting Social from the app list. From there, onscreen prompts will guide you through the set up process.  Then, when you’re snapping a photo or looking at your pictures in Gallery, select options, then Send to post the photo to Facebook or Flickr.

Set up your home screens

Home screenThe 808 PureView supports up to 3 home screens, making each home screen a great place to house your apps and widgets based on your preferences. For example, if you want the primary home screen to be full of just contacts and messaging options, you can do this. Or, if you want a view into emails and weather, this can be carried out as well.

For my home screens, I have favorite contacts, most used apps and messaging shortcuts on screen #1 with my email accounts visible on screen #2.

To configure your home screen, including shortcuts available, background and more, click the home screen and hold it, and a context menu will pop up.  From there, add your shortcuts, widgets and more.

Check for updates

Software updaterNokia is updating apps and services routinely on all phones, including the 808 PureView. Be sure to stay on top of all the updates by checking for new ones.

Accessing software updates couldn’t be easier – select the apps menu and choose SW Update.  The list of available updates will be listed.  Please note: a software update might require a restart: save any open messages or emails before you do this.
