Catching up with Katie

In April, we met Katie Ormerod, one of the world’s brightest young snowboarding talents, to learn about her whirlwind lifestyle and to see how she’s getting on with Xperia Z1 Compact. Well, we caught up with her again to find out what she’s been up to.

pic3Last time we spoke with Katie she was just about to set off on a international adventure that would see her boarding down the Alpine slopes, flipping into a foam pit, competing in the Junior World Championships and err revising for her school exams. Okay, maybe the last one isn’t that exciting, but the other three more than make up for it.

Not only did her exams go well, but she also happened to get a podium finish at the Junior World Championships and then a couple of weeks later, land the notoriously difficult backside double cork 1080, making her the first women to do so! Check out the video of her doing it.

We caught up with her again to see how she managed to fit all of it in…

1. Looks like you’ve been having an amazing time. Want to fill us in on what you’ve been up to?

These last few months have been really exciting! I travelled to Austria for some training before heading to Val Malenco in Italy for the Junior World Championships. The competition was really fun and I managed to qualify in 1st for the final which I was really happy with. Unfortunately in the final I messed up my second run but my first run score was still good enough for 3rd place, so I was stoked!!!  After more training in Mayrhofen and coming 1st in the World Rookie finals, I went home for a couple of weeks before going to Stubai in Austria for a couple of days. This was definitely the best trip of the season. It’s where we shot the video and I somehow managed to become the first girl ever to land a backside double-cork 1080.

2. The backside double-cork 1080 looked amazing! How much practice goes in to pulling off a trick like that, and what advice would you give to anyone else trying to land it?

I started training for the backside double cork 1080 back in January. We went to this big foam pit in Woodward, America where I learnt the technique. I didn’t have the opportunity to try it on snow until the end of the season due to other competitions, so it was great to finally get out to Stubai, Austria. It’s a difficult trick to learn, but I’d always recommend getting the technique right first, maybe on a trampoline. Or try the trick in stages; do the first half of the trick on snow before trying the full double.

3. I imagine the first couple of attempts hurt a fair bit. Does it hurt as much as it looks? And how do youmake yourself get back up again?

My first attempt was pretty crazy! I got the rotation round just fine; but I realised pretty quickly I had gone way too big which is why I over rotated – on to my face. That one hurt a bit, but once I composed my self again, I just told myself to get up and try it again and that’s what I did. They all went a lot better from then on.

4. From the pictures below it looks like Glove Mode is coming in handy – your pictures from the slopes are beautiful! I think it’s fair to say your office is definitely nicer looking than mine. How did you find the camera on the Z1 compact?

The glove mode on the camera is great! So useful when it is cold as I don’t have to take my gloves off! The camera on the Z1 compact is fantastic! It captures really high definition photos…perfect for the mountains!

5. So what’s the next trick on your hit list – anything hidden up your sleeve?

I want to get a really good competition run put together, so I’m hoping to learn some bigger spins going different directions as well as putting the back double 10 in it. They’ll help me get the big scores and hopefully win some more events. Think I’ll be working on that over the coming months.

We’ll see if we can grab Katie again in the next couple of months, but in the mean time, check out some of her amazing photos below.
