With the group stages only a few days from kicking off it’s time for the latest reveal on our plans as an official partner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.
Thus far we’ve focussed mainly on our involvement as Sony Mobile, but across the Sony group an operation of unprecedented scale is underway designed to make this the most memorable World Cup ever. We’ll be focussing on the four key areas of “4K,” “Entertainment,” “network services” and CSR as the whole Sony group focuses its expertise on bringing the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ alive to audiences all over the world.
Entertainment:
Our friends over at Sony Music will be setting the soundtrack to the next few weeks with a suite of amazing initiatives. They’ve just wrapped up the “SuperSong” contest with more than 1600 entries and a winning song, “Vida” making it all the way to the official 2014 FIFA World Cup™ album. They’ll also be delivering the official 2014 FIFA World Cup™ song “We Are One (Ole Ola)” and some incredible live performances at both the opening and closing ceremonies.
4K:
This will be the first World Cup in history to be filmed in 4K with one match from the group of 16, one quarter final and the final itself getting the full 4K treatment thanks to a mobile 4K production system built and shipped to Brazil specifically for this purpose. Sony’s 4K customers will be able to see trailers of the official 2014 FIFA World Cup™ Film on their compatible sets and for those without a 4K TV the experience will be replicated in 10 display booths at World Cup stadia and in 20,000 Sony Stores worldwide.
Network services (online and social):
We’ve already mentioned the “One Stadium Portal” site here on this blog but this is expanding over the next few days to include some awesome new opportunities and content. Amongst other things this will include “Fan Ambassadors” representing 11 countries reporting live from the centre of the action and an incredible new photo contest – “United” – an offshoot of the world’s largest photo competition, the Sony World Photography Awards.
On top of all this, the team behind PlayStation will be teaming up with Electronic Arts to put on the closing stages of the FIFA Interactive World Cup, the world’s largest online gaming tournament. Last year more than 2.5 million players entered and this year the final will be played in Rio de Janeiro during the actual World Cup Tournament.
CSR:
Across the world football is used as way of bringing people together regardless of their backgrounds and this World Cup will be no different. Whether through playing football or building broader skills Sony is commited to using its position as a responsible global company to maximise the impact of CSR activity at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. Two programmes of particular interest are our street football stadia and the Siyakhona media skills project, both of which we discussed in more detail here.
Whether it’s finding the next generation of media stars or rolling out the next generation of media technology, creating armchair footballing legends or simply giving children the space to play in real life, this World Cup is all about the future, the “what’s next” and it’s a tournament that we are immensely proud to support.
All of this doesn’t happen over night, it requires an enormous effort, so for those of you who will be poring over the stats as the matches unfold, check out this infographic showing the kind of scale it takes to be an official partner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.
