MWC 2012 has been a wonderful arena for the various reputed smartphone giants to show off their extremely powerful smart phones. Talking about ‘extremely powerful smart phones’, I just mirrored the concept of Quad core phones. And, Sony is an exception here, means there is no trace of a quad core smart phone from Sony yet but that doesn’t mean Sony is reluctant to digest the current trends; the two smart phones announced were dual cores.
So, why isn’t the company moving to the quad cores yet? Stephen Sneeden, Product Marketing Manager shares his ideas on this matter. He says a Sony quad-core handset will not materialise until 2013. We might just feel disappointed until we read through his explanation of why the company is keeping off from quad cores.
“We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the battery efficiency. Because right now we don’t feel that is there.
You’ll see in 2013, as we’re evaluating the quad-core performance where it makes sense, where you’re not suffering in quality and the performance truly is there, and there really is something that demanding applications need. That’s when we make the right move to quad-core.”
I personally feel his comment is sensible especially in this current situations where there is still the question of apps taking full advantage of the multi-core environment in phones. So what’s from Sony in 2012? He comments:
“What we are going to be doing in the second-half of the year is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture.”
As he says, Sony thinks it’s better to move to Cortex-A15 SoC for phones because it out performs the quad core varients in battery efficiency, apps compatibility etc. So, most probably we’ll see Cortex-A15 SoC for Xperia NXT smartphones to be released in H2 2012 but the road map can change as well.
Sneeden also mentioned that the future handsets will most likely either run ST Ericsson’s NovaThor platform or the Snapdragon S4 chipset from Qualcomm.
About the Vita OS smartphone, he couldn’t give a clear idea of what the company’s plans are, and so we might just guess that it won’t happen any time soon.
