Sensor HAL for 2011 Xperia Phones is now open source

It seems Sony Ericsson continues the support for the open dev community as they are making the the sensor HAL for the 2011 Xperia phones available as open source. Earlier they made the WebGL for android 4.0 as open source and the new step is from the feedbacks they received. So what does the developers benefit from this? They are now able to access and configure the sensors of a 2011 Xperia phone deeper than it was possible earlier.

The Sensor HAL now releasing as opensource includes source code files, and ‘make’ files that describes how the sensors are configured. So, in your ROM, you can enable or disable multiple sets of sensors for each device and in some cases also second-source sensors, when you are compiling. The sensor HAL also makes it possible to configure the sensors, so that you can mount the “sensor chip” in different ways without having to change the code.

The developers can either adapt the sensor HAL to their ROM, or use it as it is. For more information on this, just read through the README file included in the pack.

More information on Hardware Abstraction Layer can be found in this blog post.
