Nokia 808 PureView unboxings – with a twist

A couple of unboxings for you today. ‘Great!’ I hear you say, ‘but what’s so different about that?’ Well, these Nokia 808 PureViews have been unboxed, and photographed/filmed using…another Nokia 808 Pureview. So you get a double whammy, both an unboxing of the phone, plus a couple of tests to show the capabilities of the 41MP camera.

Nokia 808 PureView unboxing

Marc from the PureView Club has made a video using photographs taken on his black Nokia 808 PureView while he unboxed the white version. It’s a little different to your normal unboxing (with a video and narration), but shows every aspect of the phone in and out of the packaging, and a good overview of what comes in the box. The physical design of the phone is well covered, and in my opinion this video does a better job than a standard gallery of shots. But that could just be the quality of the photographs:

Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

Our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

Be a part of it.

Jay has produced a whole different kind of video unboxing, pitching the Nokia N8, the Nokia Lumia 900, the Canon 60D and (once it is out of the box) the Nokia 808 PureView against each other in a fatal fourway of the cameras:

So which camera wins? What do you think of the new styles of unboxings? As ever, you can leave me a comment, or jump on Twitter and have your say.

Video: Introducing the Nokia Lumia 920

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

The world’s most innovative smartphone, the new Nokia Lumia 920, has been unveiled in New York and it is everything you need for capturing, navigating and experiencing the world around you.

The Lumia 920 is the first Windows Phone to benefit from PureView imaging technology and the first phone in the world to have physical Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for blur-free images even when your hand is not rock steady. It is the best camera we have ever put in a smartphone to date.

Nokia Lumia 920 Tech & spec:

Display: 4.5 inch Nokia PureMotion HD+ WXGA IPS LCD, Super Sensitive touch, Nokia ClearBlack with high brightness mode and Sunlight Readability Enhancements

Battery: 2000mAh with integrated Qi wireless charging

Processor: 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4

Main Camera:8.7MP with Nokia PureView advanced optical imaging stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics

Full 1080p HD video capture at 30fps

Front facing camera: 1.2MP with 720p HD video

Memory: 1GB RAM, 32GB mass memory with 7GB free SkyDrive storage

Nokia’s innovative PureView expertise allows the camera on the Lumia 920 to take in five times more light than other smartphones without using the flash, making it capable of taking bright, clear and vivid images even in low light and indoor conditions.

Seeing those images on your Lumia 920 will also look better than ever thanks to another advance pioneered by Nokia. The 4.5-inch screen sees the debut of PureMotion HD+ technology, which means the display on the Lumia 920 will be the brightest, fastest and most responsive touchscreen on the market. Even gloves and long fingernails can operate the screen.

As well as being a smartphone that can hold its head up high in the company of digital SLR cameras, the Lumia 920 is trailblazing the way forward in plenty of other areas too.

The Lumia 920 is at the forefront of a new global move towards wireless charging that will make it easier for you to keep your devices powered up.

You will be able to wirelessly charge your Lumia 920 using a range of exciting accessories, such as the Fatboy™ Recharge Pillow, and even when you’re out enjoying a coffee at your local Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf café, or waiting for your flight in the Virgin Atlantic lounges at London Heathrow or at JFK airport in New York.

As well as all these hardware innovations, the Lumia 920 offers a fantastic and personal smartphone experience with Windows Phone 8.

Nokia City Lens is the latest addition to Nokia’s peerless suite of location-based apps. Among a number of significant improvements, new to its Windows Phone 8 release, Nokia Maps is now available for offline use.

Sony release binaries to support JBQ’s Vanilla Android Xperia™ S project [download]

xperia_s_colour_robots

As many of you already know, Jean-Baptiste Queru, aka JBQ, Technical Lead for the Android™ Open-Source Project (AOSP) at Google, recently started an open source project to build a vanilla Android version for Xperia S (LT26i). From Sony side, we welcome the project and support it with resources and contributions. We always try to promote and support external innovation and the openness that Android brings. We have now published binaries required for the LT26i project to progress. In addition, we want to encourage the open Android community to participate. Read on for download links and more information!

Following the announcement of the LT26i project based on the latest version of AOSP, which we think is a really nice project, we want to give the project our support. Björn Andersson, who is one of our senior engineers, will take lead from our side to help review and contribute patches to this project.

Now, since Jelly Bean, Google has dropped the support to extract binaries from a running device. Binaries are for example hardware drivers that are specific for a certain chipset. Instead of extracting them from the device, you can now download the binaries for Nexus devices from Google Developers. So in order for the LT26i project to progress, we are now providing the Xperia™ S binaries initially needed here on Sony Developer World. Since some of the binaries are proprietary files provided by Qualcomm, you can download Xperia S binaries after accepting an end-user license agreement that states how the files can be used and what limitations that exist.

Obviously a lot of more work is needed but we think it’s great to see the progress in this project, even if we can’t be sure if this software will ever be stable and complete enough for daily use (as also stated by Jean-Baptiste Queru). But we are really excited to see how community Android developers, in this case CyanogenMod, have put in efforts to contribute software patches to help the project move forward. With those patches, and the binaries we are now publishing, we now expect this project to be able to get an Xperia™ S to boot up and reach the homescreen, running the code of the project.

Check out the links below to follow the progress of the project!

New Smart Accessories make their debut at IFA 2012

Wireless Speaker SRS-BTV5
Wireless Speaker SRS-BTV5

Hi everyone!

Ant’s been keeping you posted on all the Xperia news here from Berlin at IFA 2012, but it’s not just Xperia smartphones and our new Xperia tablet S that have been turning heads on the Sony stand.

Booth-goers have also been treated to a look at some cool new additions to our Smart Accessories range, and we thought we would keep you guys in the loop with a quick update on what they’ve been getting to grips with…

New additions to the SmartTag family

Our NFC SmartTag family is expecting a few new additions! The original tags prescribed tasks and actions to your smartphone based around “Where Am I?”, the new SmartTags will have a new theme “What am I doing?”.

With new colours and a theme inspired by Play (green), Watch (purple), Listen (orange) and Active (grey), the SmartTags also offer new functionality.

Stay tuned for a feature post on how to make the most of the new SmartTags in the group.

Wireless Speaker SRS-BTV5 with NFC pairing and connecting

This little portable speaker features intuitive one-touch NFC pairing and connecting, allowing you to simply touch the NFC area on the speaker with your smartphone and it will start playing your favourite tracks, or even share a call with others in the room.

Wireless Speaker is small, portable and beautifully round (almost like an apple!), and because it’s so tiny you can take it with you wherever you go!

TV Dock comes to Xperia™ T and Xperia™ TX

Get that big screen experience from your Xperia T and Xperia TX with the new TV dock, which charges your phone while allowing you to flick through film clips, online TV, music and pictures on your big screen.

Discover Smart Connect

Smart Connect is an Android 4.0 app in your smartphone that lets you decide what happens when you connect your smartphone to another device. You can choose between single and multiple actions. If it is not pre-installed on your Xperia™ smartphone, you will find it at Google Play. Smart Connect is a renamed and significantly upgraded version of an Android connectivity app previously called LiveWare™ manager.

Smart connect reacts to any device connected to your Android smartphone via Bluetooth™, NFC, micro USB or the audio input. For some accessories, there are pre-configured actions. Make Smart accessories smarter. Discover Smart Connect.

Create smart connections to accessories using Sony’s new Smart Connect app [video]

Yesterday, Sony announced the Smart Connect app, which improves the way your smartphone connects and controls accessories or other devices. Smart Connect (which replaces LiveWare™ Manager) will be available on Google Play starting in mid September, but we thought we would give you developers an introduction to the user experience in advance.  Just like the LiveWare™ manager, Smart Connect lets you set up actions to perform when your Android™ smartphone connects to an accessory or another device. In addition, Smart Connect also lets you condition Events depending on what time it is, which opens possibilities for a new, smooth experience. Read on for more details!

Compared to the LiveWare™ Manager, there are also several new actions to choose from when you as a user define your Events. For example, you can now choose to post a message to your Facebook Timeline, have incoming text messages read to you or turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality.

Smart Connect

Screenshot showing an example of the dialogue that will appear first time a device or accessory is connected after installing Smart Connect. In the image, a charger has been connected at night time.

Customise your experience depending on device and time
You can define your own experiences by creating Events in Smart Connect. This means you can set up your smartphone to trigger an Event when connecting a special accessory (or another device) at a special time, with up to 10 actions per Event. So, for example, if you create a new Event called “Music & Office” in Smart Connect, you can set the WALKMAN™ player to start between 7:00 – 9:00 together with your headset while you are commuting to work. Then between office hours, connecting the same headset can trigger the conference call app to start.

There are a great variety of actions to choose from when you define your experiences. For example, you could start an application, adjust the sound volume, post to your Facebook timeline, and turn the wireless connectivity on or off.

Actions in Smart Connect

Besides creating your own Events, as a user you can also choose to use predefined Events, enabling smooth user experiences in everyday life. Smart Connect comes with a number of predefined Events for accessories such as Xperia™ SmartTags, headphones, chargers, and headsets.

App developers, use Smart Connect to increase the visibility of your app
From Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), Smart Connect will also be the app to configure settings and extensions for Sony Smart Accessories™ like the SmartWatch and Smart Wireless Headset pro. In addition, Smart Connect will help users find new apps for their Smart Accessories™. This means that as an app developer, you can gain visibility for your app by making an extension for one of our Smart Accessories™. Check out the Smart Extension SDK page for more information. Smart Connect replaces the LiveWare manager from Android 4.0 and onwards.

Download Smart Connect from Google Play from mid September
Our coming smartphones starting with the Xperia V will have Smart Connect pre-installed. But we also support earlier Xperia™ smartphones, as well as Android smartphones of other brands. The devices need to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwhich) or above. In those cases, you simply download the app from Google Play. Note that some services and features are market dependent.

So would you like to try Smart Connect? What actions would you use it for? Drop us a comment below and let us know. Smart Connect will be available on Google Play starting mid September, so remember to check it out!

xperia_t
xperia_t

Today at IFA in Berlin, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai revealed that Xperia T, the latest smartphone from its new Xperia range is set to feature in Skyfall – the 23rd James Bond film and first to feature an Xperia smartphone from Sony.

We’ve been in the field with 007 before as Sony Ericsson, with gadgetry featured in previous missions Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

Sony Ericsson first partnered with Bond for Die Another Day starring Pierce Brosnan in 2002, using both the T68i and P800 in the film. Sony Ericsson phones have since featured in all Bond films, with the K800i and M600i making their debuts in Casino Royale, and the C902 bringing limited edition glamour to Quantum of Solace.

Xperia T will be part of a new range of smartphones available upon the film’s release later this year. It features everything you’d expect from a Sony smartphone – stylish design, state-of-the-art specs, easy connectivity and access to premium entertainment experiences anywhere, anytime.

Xperia T provides Sony’s best HD smartphone screen, camera and One-touch connectivity enabled by NFC, with key features including:

  • 4.6” HD Reality Display powered by the Mobile Bravia Engine for razor sharp clarity
  • 13MP fast capture camera that goes from sleep mode to snap in just over a second

  • Latest generation 1.5GHz dual core processor for improved battery life, fast performance and ultra sharp graphics
  • MHL connectivity for viewing content on a big screen without the need for a charger

We’ll be bringing you more details over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes fixed firmly on the blog!

From Xperia with love,

Ant.

From the Sony booth – a look at Sony’s media applications

PIC1
PIC1

Hey guys!

Just checking in – this morning we’ve been doing the rounds at the Sony booth, and having a play with Sony’s Media applications: WALKMAN®, Album and Movies – seeing how they look and function across multiple Sony devices.

Sony’s media applications mix the best of Sony’s signature and current technologies to connect you to a host of sweet entertainment services, including Music Unlimited! As a key part of the UI on Xperia smartphones, tablets and VAIO PCs, they provide connected and consistent laughs, smiles, giggles and joy…

Here’s a little more about them..

  • With the “WALKMAN®” application, you can play, recommend, discover and experience tunes in soul-moving, body-grooving clarity. Pick album art colour, and enjoy enhanced sounds through Sony’s audio genius; manual equaliser and Sony’s ClearAudio mode. Facebook integration makes it easy to share, recommend and find out what your friends are listening to… before debating and deciding on what to share via NFC one touch or DNLA ;-)
  • Sort, browse and share your favourite photos and videos with the “Album” application. The super-intuitive interface let’s you pinch, grab and zoom to enjoy your snaps in crystal-clear clarity (using your Xperia smartphone’s mobile BRAVIA engine, naturally). Fancy critiquing your snap-happy friends? Easy – see their Facebook photos, and add your thoughts instantly with likes and comments. As you’d expect, you can also throw photos via one-touch to friends, or to a big screen TV instantly and wirelessly.
  • Watch your favourite movies and TV shows with the “Movies” application, in the highest quality audio and video. For the budding film buffs amongst us, you can discover extra info using Gracenote’s rich database integration. And.. that’s right, you can also hook up to a TV via HDMI or DNLA to enjoy your own cinematography or the latest blockbuster on the big screen straight from your Xperia device!

Don’t take my word for it, have a gander at the shot’s I snapped earlier below for a first glimpse at Sony’s media applications on our new Xperia smartphones and Xperia tablet S.

Like what you see?

Over and out.
