The world’s most innovative smartphone, the new Nokia Lumia 920, has been unveiled in New York and it is everything you need for capturing, navigating and experiencing the world around you.
The Lumia 920 is the first Windows Phone to benefit from PureView imaging technology and the first phone in the world to have physical Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for blur-free images even when your hand is not rock steady. It is the best camera we have ever put in a smartphone to date.
Nokia Lumia 920 Tech & spec:
Display: 4.5 inch Nokia PureMotion HD+ WXGA IPS LCD, Super Sensitive touch, Nokia ClearBlack with high brightness mode and Sunlight Readability Enhancements
Battery: 2000mAh with integrated Qi wireless charging
Processor: 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4
Main Camera:8.7MP with Nokia PureView advanced optical imaging stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics
Full 1080p HD video capture at 30fps
Front facing camera: 1.2MP with 720p HD video
Memory: 1GB RAM, 32GB mass memory with 7GB free SkyDrive storage
Nokia’s innovative PureView expertise allows the camera on the Lumia 920 to take in five times more light than other smartphones without using the flash, making it capable of taking bright, clear and vivid images even in low light and indoor conditions.
Seeing those images on your Lumia 920 will also look better than ever thanks to another advance pioneered by Nokia. The 4.5-inch screen sees the debut of PureMotion HD+ technology, which means the display on the Lumia 920 will be the brightest, fastest and most responsive touchscreen on the market. Today, Nokia announced its first Lumia smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8: the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820.
The Nokia Lumia 920 brings a raft of technology firsts to the table, on top of all the great advantages offered by Windows Phone 8 and exceptional industrial design, making it our new flagship smartphone device and what we believe is the world’s most innovative phone.
Image is everything
This is the best camera we’ve ever put in a smartphone. It offers the latest in PureView technology to allow for photography in much lower light conditions than has ever been the case on a smartphone previously. This is combined with genuine Optical Image Stabilization for dramatically reduced blur and movement.
In the words of Nokia EVP for Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, the PureView technology found in the Lumia 920 makes “it possible for a smartphone camera to take the kind of images usually only seen on a standalone SLR camera”.
The Lumia 920 also features PureMotion HD+ display technology, powering its generous 4.5-inch screen with the fastest, brightest, most-sensitive and highest resolution display ever seen in this market.

More power; more speed
Power management for smartphones reaches unprecedented levels of usability with our largest ever battery (2000mAh). And now wireless charging – available on both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 – makes topping up your power level faster and more convenient than ever before, both at home and in the office, and at venues such as cafes and airport lounges.
Our second Windows Phone 8 device is the Nokia Lumia 820. Here again, you’ll be able to experience all the new features of the platform in a stunningly designed package, a 4.3-inch screen, and the same fantastic performance levels offered by the 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor common to each device. The Lumia 820 meets the needs of the modern phone user with an exchangeable shell design for sports, going out with friends or staying charged the whole day.

Windows Phone 8 offers advantages like Internet Explorer 10, deeper integration with your PC, improved business grade security, together with the more personal, people-centred approach to showing and using information that has delighted users of earlier Lumia smartphones.
Finding the future
On the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, our signature Location apps are extended and made more powerful:
- Nokia Maps for Windows Phone 8 is going to work offline and will integrate walk navigation, an augmented reality view and venue maps.
- We’ve refreshed Nokia Transport to support search history, to get automatic over-the-air coverage updates, to be more user friendly and to integrate Nokia Maps walk navigation.
- Nokia City Lens is even better on Lumia powered by Windows Phone 8: you can now decide to get information only about the places in your line of sight and pin category tiles to the start screen.
Location on the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 get a further, hardware-based boost with autonomous assisted GPS and GLONASS receivers. This means that you can see yourself on a map within seconds, even when you’re offline.

Our new Lumia phones come in a wide and vivid range of colours. The Nokia Lumia 920 comes in yellow, red, grey, white and black. The Nokia Lumia 820 goes two steps further with yellow, red, grey, cyan, purple, white and black models.
Both phones will be available in select markets in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants later this year. Prices and release dates will be revealed in separate, later announcements.
There’s a lot to take in here. And we’ll be covering each part of these announcements in separate, detailed posts and videos. Stay tuned over the next days to learn more about latest in PureView, wireless charging, Location, PureMotion HD+ and to see the two new devices in more detail.

A couple of unboxings for you today. ‘Great!’ I hear you say, ‘but what’s so different about that?’ Well, these Nokia 808 PureViews have been unboxed, and photographed/filmed using…another Nokia 808 Pureview. So you get a double whammy, both an unboxing of the phone, plus a couple of tests to show the capabilities of the 41MP camera.

Marc from the PureView Club has made a video using photographs taken on his black Nokia 808 PureView while he unboxed the white version. It’s a little different to your normal unboxing (with a video and narration), but shows every aspect of the phone in and out of the packaging, and a good overview of what comes in the box. The physical design of the phone is well covered, and in my opinion this video does a better job than a standard gallery of shots. But that could just be the quality of the photographs:

Be a part of it.
Jay has produced a whole different kind of video unboxing, pitching the Nokia N8, the Nokia Lumia 900, the Canon 60D and (once it is out of the box) the Nokia 808 PureView against each other in a fatal fourway of the cameras:
So which camera wins? What do you think of the new styles of unboxings? As ever, you can leave me a comment, or jump on Twitter and have your say.

We’re excited about the Lumia 920 and the ground-breaking PureView imaging capabilities we announced today.
In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created.
We are looking forward to bringing the Lumia 920, with PureView optical image stabilization to select markets later this year.
Here is the video shown at the press conference shot using a Lumia 920. On the right is a Lumia 920 prototype with OIS. On the left is a smartphone without OIS. The difference is apparent.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone visionary, Joe Belfiore, has paid tribute to the ‘gorgeous and awesome’ Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones that have been unveiled today in New York.
In an interview with Conversations, which you can watch in the video above, Joe said the innovative new smartphones represented Microsoft’s ‘next big chapter in our partnership with Nokia.’
The Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 are the first Nokia smartphones to run on the new Windows Phone 8 operating system that has been overseen by Joe and his team.

How significant is Windows Phone 8?
“It is the release where we fulfil the vision of the Metro UI with the beautiful new start experience and with the underpinnings in common with Windows 8 on the desktop, slates and laptops,” says Joe.
“I think the common technology core with a great new user interface across all our products is going to help developers write more apps, help end users be more productive and happy, and hopefully drive our business together in a significant way.”
Talking pictures
Speaking at the joint Nokia and Microsoft press conference, Joe was especially keen to talk about the camera support that Windows Phone 8 offers.
“The main news today is the camera support that we have added to Windows Phone 8 that Nokia in particular has exploited to build an amazing photography device in this Lumia 920.”

Microsoft, said Joe, had added extendibility to the camera experience so that different applications could be created to ‘use our advance pipeline to create all kinds of end user value.’
For its part, the Lumia 920 features the best camera Nokia has ever put in a smartphone.
‘A work of art’
Joe has been lucky enough to be using the Lumia 920 as his own phone for quite a while. What does he love the most about the flagship Windows Phone 8 device?
“I really love the screen and the camera both of which are great experiences. But I have to say when I got this near final version in my hand it has got to be the finish and the ID [industrial design]. This is a work of art.”

After the tremendous reception deservedly received for the Nokia 808 PureView, our imaging team was perhaps entitled to a holiday.
Instead, though, we sent them back to the lab to work on two things: bringing the technology to Lumia smartphones and delivering a whole new set of improvements.
Carl Zeiss Optics
Optical Image Stabiliser: Barrel shift type
Stabiliser performance: Up to 3EV (8x longer shutter speeds)
Focal length: 3.73mm
35mm equivalent focal length: 26mm for 16:9, 28mm for 4:3
F-number: f/2.0
Focus range: 8 cm – Infinity
Construction: Five elements, one group. All lens surfaces are aspherical
Optical format: 1/3″
The results of this intensive labour are first found in the Nokia Lumia 920.
[NB: If you want to get right into the nitty-gritty, download and digest the white paper. This is the tl;dr version.]
The initial PureView model focused on the problem of digital zoom and perfect details. Phase two of development focuses on low light performance, and adds more practical features that will allow more camera phone users to take better pictures.
The number one camera phone annoyance – fixed
Low light performance has been improved through two particular measures.
First, the sensor type has been changed. A next-generation Back-Side Illuminated sensor is fitted that places the photosensitive area directly beneath the lens, without wires or metal between, as is the case with Front-Side Illuminated sensors. More light reaches the plate, in other words. That’s of critical importance when there isn’t much light around.
Image captured with Nokia Lumia 920

Second, we’ve adopted a massive f/2.0 aperture – in layman’s terms, it’s a bigger hole, and so it lets in more light from the start when you’re using it indoors. Both these measures mean a lower sensor size is needed in order to get great results when you’re working in low light.
Ready, steady, snap
These advances are complemented by Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Your pictures and videos won’t blur when your hands are shaking, or when you are on the move. Again, it’ll help in low-light conditions where exposure times can get significantly longer.
Your images and pictures won't blur
The OIS technology isn’t a digital algorithm, like you may have experienced previously. Crucially the rear-end of the camera is caged with a gyroscope to move the whole optical assembly to compensate unintended camera movement. Enough explanation: this video tells the story best.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.
As a self-confessed terrible photographer, thanks to genetically inherited shaky hands, it’s this part of the story that interests me the most.
But there’s more…
The Nokia Lumia 920 packs a new generation of LED flash. This can be used as a continuous light for video and – for the first time – a pulse burst flash. The technology behind LED flash has improved significantly over a period of mere months, to be able to accurately freeze subjects under many more conditions than used to be the case.

Next, the image processing algorithms on the Lumia 920 significantly outshine any found on previous camera phones. In particular, the ‘denoise’ algorithm for reducing any visual noise from images is brand new and better than ever. These advanced algorithms compensate for not having the oversampling technology used in the previous generation of PureView.
Once more, we’d urge the true camera-fanatics to take a look at the white paper for more in-depth information. Even if you’re not, there’s a ton of information there that’s just plain fascinating for anyone with an interest in photography.
Note: The Lumia 920 pictures in this post were taken using prototype hardware and software, and then reduced dramatically in size. In addition, the OIS video, above, was not shot using the Lumia 920.
