It’s coming, folks! The 55^th Grammy Awards! The first one in 1959 was expressly created to be anti-rock. Tuxedos and gramophones all the way. That didn’t last. And that’s not all that’s changed. These days you’re more likely to listen to Grammy winners on your smartphone than on a stereo. To celebrate this new way of checking out tunes, and the artists who created them, Nokia Music has teamed up with RocNation, Jay-Z’s record label, to sponsor the pre Grammy brunch.

This exciting bash is part of a long and eventful Grammy history. To see just how eventful, enjoy these fantastic episodes and facts from yesteryear. 

Tears of a clown

In 1959, a red nose and tears design won the best album cover, with Frank Sinatra’s Only The Lonely. Record of the Year was the not-so-niftily-named Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) by Domenico Modugno.

Beautiful boy

One of the most moving acceptance speeches – Yoko Ono in 1981, collecting the award for Album of the Year Double Fantasy. Son Sean could hardly reach the podium as he peered over at the standing ovation. ‘John is with us here today,’ Yoko said tearfully.

Great Grammy grabbers

Can you guess who has won the most Grammys? Heard of Sir George Solti? Thought not. But this Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor was nominated 74 times and must have had a very full mantelpiece – with 31 wins!

The cheek of it!

Stevie Wonder won the Best Album Award for Innervisions (1973). He didn’t anticipate that nearly three decades later, he would have to buy it back from Ebay after it was stolen, for $29,250. Definitely a case of I ain’t gonna stand for it.

Mr Engima

No really – Bob Dylan was sober when Jack Nicholson handed him his Lifetime Achievement Award.  He thanked no one but instead issued gems like ‘It’s possible to become so defiled in this world that your own father and mother will abandon you.’  

A day in the (terrifying) life

No prizes for guessing that The Beatles won for Album of The Year in 1967 with Sgt Peppers – but in the same year, Boris Karloff won for Best Recording for Children, with Dr Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Yes, that’s right – the scary man who played Frankenstein’s monster. 

It’s not just music

Non-musicians have also picked up some plaudits – including Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev and Barack Obama – all winning in different years for Best Spoken Word Album. Hope then for William Shatner and his er…unique style of singing?

You don’t even have to be alive

In 2012 the legendary Tony Bennett presented Amy Winehouse’s parents their daughter’s Best Performance by a Pop Duo or Group. Bob Marley at last received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 but like Jimi Hendrix, never received a Grammy in his lifetime.

Some really rate… some less so

It’s all about the snub

Aretha Franklin was unamused by the lack of RESPECT shown by a wasted, stumbling and David Bowie giggling in his own private world in 1975. ‘Ladies and gentleman and others,’ was not the greatest of beginnings. Neither was donning sunglasses to read the nominations.  Franklin was there for Best Rhythm and Blue Performance by a Female. She ignored him.

As planned, this week we’re starting the software rollout for our first batch of Xperia smartphones Xperia T and Xperia V*, with Xperia TX following next month. 

The new software brings Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean”, along with a number of different and improved Sony features – the rollout will continue to ramp up over this month and next.

We’ve been working to blend our Sony Xperia software with Google’s Jelly Bean release to create optimum user experiences – some of the cool functionality you can look forward to includes:

• Updated, more intuitive versions of Sony Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies 

A slick, easy-on-the-eye library that lets you view and access all your snaps, videos and tunes in one place – not to mention the signature Sony audio and imaging tech that makes your content stand (and shout) out!

• Increased options for personalization

A revamped homescreen experience for handling widgets, apps and shortcuts… With up to 7 desktop panes, widgets that auto-resize and actionable notifications, you have complete flexibility to create the interface you want / need with a few simple touches!

• Improved app organization and search 

Application tray sorting is that bit breezier – just press and hold on any app – move, add it to your desktop or create a folder within the tray by dropping it on top of another!

We’ve also added a new search function within the application tray that makes it easy to locate your local apps.

• Improved camera functionality 

One for both the budding photographers and all-action snappers amongst us – we’ve added a more intuitive viewfinder with the addition of auto scene setting, and the option to switch between front and back camera with a single touch.

• Google Now 

Combining the power of Google search and user profiling, Google Now helps you accomplish daily tasks more efficiently.

It brings you just the right info at just the right time – cards appear throughout the day as prompts or reminders, and appear as a notifications when they’re flagged as important! Now there’s no excuse to miss that all important meeting…

As soon as the Jelly Bean software is available for your device, you’ll receive a notification in your phone. In most cases you’ll have the option to download and update over-the-air, but in some instances the software package may only be accessible via PC Companion or Bridge for Mac.

Zamów już teraz!

Transferring data from your old phone, or media items from your Mac, to your new Nokia Lumia may seem like a daunting task. Firstly, there’s finding the right program to use, then there’s selecting the right folders, digging deeper into the directory. Thankfully, Windows Phone App for Mac is at hand to make the whole process easier.

First things first, you’ll need to grab the right program and download it to your Mac, and there’s only one way to get that. You’ll need an iTunes account and access to the App Store, then search for Windows Phone App for Mac (or click that link, of course).

Find the USB cable that came with your phone and plug one end of if into your Nokia Lumia, and the other end into your Mac – then run Windows Phone App for Mac.

When you first do this, you’ll be greeted with a welcome screen telling you a little about how you can benefit from syncing your phone with your Mac. Running along the bottom of the screen, you’ll also see a progress bar as the app attempts to talk to your new Nokia Lumia.

Connecting should only take a few moments, but once linked, you’ll get the opportunity to change the default name of your smartphone to something more memorable and personal.

Probably the best way to ensure that your media files are all stored safely on your Mac is to tick the two boxes on this start screen. They authorise the automatic synchronisation when you connect the phone, and import your photos and videos to your Mac.

Press continue.

Now you’ve gone through the most basic of setups, you’ll have noticed that the left side of Windows Phone App for Mac would’ve filled out with categories. Here’s where you decide what needs to be synced, or not, by going into the categories and selecting the appropriate options. If you tick it, you want to sync it. It’s as simple as that.

Here’s what you can sync:

• Music – including music from your iTunes catalogue*
• Photos & Videos
• Movies & TV Shows
• Podcasts
• Ringtones

There’s also the possibility to browse your device manually and look at individual items by scrolling through the Browse Device category.

For further syncing options, the main screen of the app hosts a Device Options… button where you’ll be able to remove all the media from your device in one go. Remember, this will delete ALL your media, so be sure you want to do that before pressing that button.

It’s at that main screen that you’ll also find a shortcut key that’ll take you straight to the Windows Phone Store where you can browse through the 125,000 apps or games.

No matter what section of the app you’re in, you’re always one glance away from knowing how much storage you’ve got left on your phone.

The family is growing.

The storage bar at the bottom of the app displays a detailed view of what types of media you’ve got on your phone, and how much room they’re taking up. By default, you’re shown the total memory, from both the phone memory and the SD card (should you have one), but this can be changed. Press it once to view the capacity of the phone, press it again to view the SD capacity, and once more to go back to the joint view.

There we have it, simple plugging in and syncing.

*Some protected (DRM) media files can’t be copied or synced between your Mac and your Windows Phone.
