When we announced the Nokia Lumia 620 back in December, it attracted lots of attention, and many comments from you, our readers. We’ve gone through those comments to answer some of your questions.

“When will this be available in the Philippines?”

This isn’t the only comment asking for when the Nokia Lumia 620 will be released in a specific country. As is usual, we can’t give exact dates of when devices will be launched and in which country. However, you can keep up-to-date on the availability of Lumia 620 in your country by checking the local pages.

“Guys, what do you think of the battery? 1300 mAh seems disappointing to me.“

I’ve been using the Lumia 620 on a daily basis for over a month now, and the battery has never let me down. I mostly use my phone for sending and receiving emails and the occasional phone call, generally lasting anywhere from five minutes to an hour. There’s always plenty of battery life left at the end of the day, even when I decide to take some photos, play some games or get a little productive with some apps.

“Does this thing have any protective glass like Gorilla Glass?“

In short, no. The Nokia Lumia 620 doesn’t have Corning ® Gorilla ® Glass. However, it does have toughened glass that does an exceptional job at protecting the screen. After one month of daily usage, our Nokia Lumia 620′s screen is looking almost as fresh as the day we took it out from the box – there are only a few minor scratches at the bottom. Storing a phone in the same pocket as your loose change will have a slight impact, but these scratches are barely noticeable.

“I like it … How about the sensors? Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and compass… I’m a developer. Can I develop apps as well and debug on this device?“

On-board the Lumia 620 is a 3D accelerometer, ambient light sensors, a proximity sensor and a compass (magnetometer sensor). Of course you can develop apps for the Nokia Lumia 620, as well as other Nokia Lumia smartphones. Developer.nokia.com is full of training material and documentation to help you create amazing apps. There’s also a bunch of software too, including links to the SDKs.

“I wonder if the 512 MB RAM will start any restriction like on the Lumia 610, which lacks the capability of playing applications like Skype and Angry Birds. I asked this because the other Lumias with WP8 have 1GB RAM.“

Skype and Angry Birds run just fine on the Nokia Lumia 620. Both are currently installed on my device.

“What type of GPU that it comes with?“

The GPU inside this device is an Adreno 305, created by Qualcomm.

But it’s not all about the actual phones: mobile phone covers have gone through their own geek-to-chic revolution. Protection and practicalities aside, what your phone wears has became a statement of your own creative individuality. Let’s take a turn down the phone customisation catwalk!

Stylish from the start

Nokia have been style-conscious from the start, but it was in 1998 that the first customisable cases hit the shelves. In fact, the Nokia 5110 was the first mobile phone ever to boast user-changeable covers. These Xpress-On Shells were water-and-dust resistant clip-on fascias that came in seven different designs and colours. Make no mistake: this was a game-changer.

Game on!

Skip to 2003, and the Nokia 3100 introduced a new generation of Xpress-On gaming cover enhancements: shells that featured ‘electroluminesence’, or special light effects that sparkled through the faceplate in sync with ringtones, games and the phone’s alarms. Sci-Fi!

Fashion designed

 Nokia Design Studio launched the 7200 in 2004, with a limited run of, you guessed it, 7200 units. Featuring a white leather cover and wrist strap, a matching pouch, and embroidered designs, this was as much a fashion statement as it was a phone case—if you could get your mitts on one!

Keen to be green

For the eco-conscious shopper, 2007 brought the Nokia 3110 Evolve—a phone that came with bio-covers made from more than 50% renewable material. It wasn’t customisable, but it certainly made a design statement.

Hi-tech heaven

 With the release of the Nokia Lumia 820, interchangeable shells went hi-tech: not only are they colourful and hard-wearing, but they could also be used for wireless charging. Does it get much better than this?

3D printastic

Well, yes, actually! In 2013, customisation has reached a whole new, awesome level. Nokia have teamed up with MakerBot, the 3D printing giants, to create special templates for clip-on shells for the Nokia Lumia 820 and the Nokia Lumia 520. Pick your basic design, alter it to suit your preferences, and then add your own text—and you’ll have a truly one-of-a-kind smartphone cover.

It’s been nearly two decades since Nokia started to craft mobile devices especially for you. Customisation has changed beyond recognition, but one thing that stays the same is people’s desire to be different. So what’s can we expect in the next couple of decades? This week’s Asha App Spotlight is a theme park ride turned Hollywood blockbuster, which is now a popular mobile game. I’m talking, of course, about Captain Jack Sparrow and his seafaring adventures.

In Pirates of the Caribbean (free) you are Jack Sparrow and the aim is to get back control of his ship, the Black Pearl, and make your way to the Cave of Treasures.

Of course, along the way, you are fighting with enemies, overcoming tricky obstacles, searching for treasure and fending off attacks on the ship from the Royal Navy and other pirates. 

If you like your platform games with a great storyline then Pirates of the Caribbean will be right down your street. There’s lots of jumping, swinging, running and sword-fighting action. In fact, there’s only one word that will suffice: swashbuckling.

You don’t really need to have seen the films to enjoy this game but I imagine your familiarity with these characters can only enhance the experience.

Kenya is one of Nokia’s longest-standing and most valuable markets in Africa. Nokia’s General Manager for East Africa, Bruce Howe, says it’s the ‘powerhouse of the region’. It’s also the fifth country to get a local Nokia Life service, following successful launches in India, China, Indonesia and Nigeria.

Kenya has a population of a little over 40 million people. With 65 per-cent living in rural areas, and with a similar level of mobile phone penetration, there are many who are in need of news and practical information that’s hard to obtain through means other than a mobile phone.

The Nokia Life service uses an installed app and SMS messaging to create an almost web-app-like experience for users.

“We’ve learned that it’s absolutely essential to deliver the service in local languages,” says Bruce.

The service launches in English and Swahili, an advantage Bruce points to as a big differentiator between Nokia and other suppliers.

The Kenyan Nokia Life service is focused around four areas: healthcare, education, entertainment and political news. Bruce notes that a passionate interest in political affairs is very common in Kenya. But while printed newspapers are often prohibitively expensive, the Nokia Life service allows people to remain up-to-date on the issues and debates through an affordable and trustworthy source.

Nokia has also worked with local and international partners to ensure the mix of content is right for Kenya. Partners include the British Council for English-language learning, Plan for healthcare advice, and local media organisations for news and entertainment information.

“The information isn’t just an off-the-shelf generic mix. It’s 100 per-cent localised and relevant,” says Bruce.

Similarly, Nokia has worked with local operators like Safaricom and Airtel to help ensure that they can provide affordable packages for their customers.

By now, over 95 million customers have tried the Nokia Life service, making it one of the biggest SMS-based services of its kind in the world.

Bruce notes the transformative value of Nokia Life:

“Very often our customers for this service have got a phone that can basically do two things: make phone calls and SMS. When you add Nokia Life to that, it’s adding a massive 50 per-cent more functionality to their phone.

“And it can make a very real difference for customers. When you consider this service can guide a rural woman safely through pregnancy, that’s real value.”

Second up is the Camera Extras app, which offers Smart Shoot, Panorama, Action Shot and a self-timer. The updated version uses burst mode to take a sequence of photos so you can choose your favorite shot and then remove unwanted moving objects. With UI improvements it really feels like the Smart Camera found in our Windows Phone 8 range.
