Facebook apps on your Nokia Lumia

Facebook. It seems you can’t go anywhere without somebody mentioning it and there’s good reason for that; it’s a useful service that helps keep us all connected to each other. Initially set up as a desktop service, smartphones have made it easier to use Facebook on the move, and the long list of Facebook apps available at Windows Phone Store show how popular it is. We’ve plucked out three of the top-rated Facebook apps to make your decision in picking an app simpler.
Facebook – the official Microsoft app: £Free
25,753 reviews with an average of 3 out of 5 stars

As far as apps are concerned, I always like to look at the official app first so I know what to expect from any other.
This Microsoft-made Facebook app sticks to the design language of the Windows Phone OS, as you’d expect. The different screens within the app are just noticeable at the edge of the each screen encouraging you to flick through the app in a horizontal fashion
The welcome page is the news feed of all your fiends and family, with the newest at the top, but this can be changed selecting the filter option in the settings at the bottom, or by tapping on the ‘news feed’ text at the top.
The banner at the top can either be the standard Facebook blue, or any one of your Facebook photos. You can change the banner photo at any point by selecting ‘change banner image’ in the settings at the bottom.
You’ll also find any friend requests, private messages or notifications in that banner section.
Whenever you want to post a status update, upload a photo or check in to a location, the tool bar sits at the bottom of the news feed section.
One of the most popular features of Facebook is sharing photos (new or from your gallery), and that’s why there’s a photo section on the next screen that gives you a quick glance at your friends latest photos – the last six are shown but can be expanded by tapping on the albums.
A nice little feature is that you can shake the phone to refresh the feeds. One quick shake will bring you new content from your friends.
The Live tile is sizeable to all three sizes, small, medium, or large, with the latter two providing details of your latest update and notifications.
Facebook Pro – Wami Apps: £Free, or £1.29 for the ad-free version.
12,501 reviews with an average of 4 out of 5 stars

This app is has a totally different layout to the one above. It has a totally vertical interface, as opposed to a horizontal one.
There’s a feeling that Facebook Pro simply condenses everything you might see on the desktop version of Facebook onto your phone. And what I mean by that is the information you might see on the right of the desktop version is now at the top of your news feed. For example, you’re shown a couple of people you may know, with the option to expand that further if you’d like.
Beneath that, it’s right down to business and you can browse through the latest news from all the people you care about. If you like an update, just hit the like button, or alternatively share the update or comment on it in exactly the same way.
The tool bar that remains at the bottom of the screen no matter where you’ve navigated to houses the home, refresh, notifications, and messages icons, as well as the additional options of heading to the chat feature, the events list, the photo feed and to upload a photo. However, it’s only possible to upload an existing photo and not a new one directly from the camera.
In addition to this disappointment, if you want to post a status update, you’ll need to head right back up to the top of the app or press the home button to do so. It’d be nice if that top bar would be made sticky to follow you down the page. But it does the job; it’s only one more step in the process.
If you want to place the app on your Start screen there’s three Live tiles to choose from, in medium or large size.
There’s the simple Live tile that just shows you the app name, in traditional Facebook blue. Then there’s the Live tile with Friend’s profile pictures or the Live tile with an unread message count. These update from time-to-time to help you connect better with your friends.
Facebook Viewer – Cambo: £Free
3,154 reviews with an average of 4 out of 5

Facebook Viewer is a nicely put together app; it sticks to the horizontal UI structure that Windows Phone is known for. When panning left and right, you’re presented with tiles with different functions. There’s the Feeds section, Upload tile, Events, Groups, Profile, Photo feed, Friends online, Search, and Settings. Everything you’d expect from Facebook.
The plus icon at the top of the page is where you’d need to tap if you wanted to add your own status.
Across the bottom of the app is where you’ll find any notifications, private messages or friend requests.
When you navigate deeper into the app by using one of those tiles, you’ll find that the rest of the app is almost identical to Facebook Pro above. There’s obviously a standard Facebook API that provides this information and it’s either packed in an entirely different way, or only slightly.
However, this is a great looking package, with the ability to upload photos directly from the camera.
In terms of Live tiles, the medium and small tile are used. To add a Live tile, long press on either the Feeds, New Status, Messages, or Notifications icons to pin them to the Start screen. They give you quick-access into what’s important to you.
If none of these Facebook apps take your fancy, the built-in Me tile also lets you post directly to Facebook.
These are just a small number of Facebook apps currently available for Nokia Lumia smartphones and will work on all Nokia Lumia smartphones, such as the Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 800, and Nokia Lumia 620.
What Facebook app do you use? Any of the ones mentioned above, or different ones? Use the comments section below to let us know.

Your wish is my app – season finale
Click here to view the video on YouTube.
In India, today marks the season finale of the Nokia-sponsored TV talent show ‘Your wish is my app’. It’s Dragon’s Den for app ideas, if you want an easy analogy. The winning entry gets made into a real app for the Windows Phone Store and the person who came up with it wins a million rupees.
But, as series host Rajiv Makhni reveals to Conversations, it has produced a number of surprises that no-one on the production team was expecting.
Can you explain the procedure for gathering ideas?
The procedure had to change quite a bit from the original plan. We publicised the call for app ideas. But we thought it would have quite a niche appeal. We expected maybe 5,000 to 10,000 submissions.
In fact, the idea really resonated with people and we ended up with 38,000 entries.
That caused a bit of a problem because we didn’t have the resources to go through the entries. We also felt a great sense of responsibility to look at them all properly. We didn’t want a great idea to slip through the cracks because we were rushing to narrow down the entries.
So Nokia helped by organising multiple small teams of employees to work carefully through the entries. They got down to about 250. Then the series judges selected around 50 to actually appear on the show.

What did you learn in the course of the process?
That massive response was a real eye-opener. And there was incredible diversity among the entrants. In the final, there’s an 82-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy. People from all walks of life. We were expecting mainly college students, but instead we had teams of housewives; grandmothers would present, followed by their grandsons.
There are a couple of things in that. First, yes, the prize money and being on TV appeal to a lot of people, but this specific topic has a special appeal. The desire to make a mark, being able to create a real app that has its own life in the Store, has a very strong hold on people.
The second thing is what smartphones have done to people’s relationship with technology. As I said, we were expecting a bunch of highly-educated college students, but technology has become much more democratic than we realised. People feel they can get involved and say, “Listen. I’ve got an idea to improve this experience.”

What has it shown you about the apps market?
It’s become very clear to me that there are too many apps in this world.
What I mean by that is that the most common way in which entries failed was by being the same as something that already exists. They weren’t cheating – it’s just really hard to find what’s available because none of us has the time to look through hundreds of thousands of apps.
That problem is something we’ve fed back into the judging process for the finale. We’ll not just be asking people to justify their apps, but also how they will ensure that people will find them.

We have to ask – what’s the worst idea anyone came up with?
There were a lot of terrible ideas, but one in particular stands out very clearly. I think the man deserves some kind of award.
The man came before the panel. He was very earnest and sincere. And we asked him what his app would deliver.
He said, “I want an app that makes me have conversations with pets.”
We looked at each other: at first we thought he was messing us about. But he seemed very sincere so we asked him for more information.
He said, “Well, I would speak into my phone and the phone would translate it into dog-language. Then my dog could bow-wow back into the phone, and it would translate it into my language.
“Of course, the phone would need a special button to switch between different types of pets.”

And lastly, what were some of the big themes that were revealed about the Indian marketplace for apps?
To talk about one: there was a very significant proportion of apps that were attempting to tackle the issue of women’s security. It’s a real problem in this country, as everyone knows, but large numbers of people – male and female – are facing it head-on and looking for solutions.
There have been a number of very innovative ideas – not just wish lists, but people have researched the market to see what’s available and looked at how to improve on that.
I take that as a very positive thing. And who knows? Maybe events like this show have the power to change the situation.
Thank you for your time, Rajiv, and good luck to all the finalists!

Designing the Nokia Lumia 620
Click here to view the video on YouTube.
When you look at the Nokia Lumia 620, you’ll instantly notice the vibrant, fun colours. This is partly due to Nokia’s use of the CMYK colour palette, but also down to something called dual-shot, a way of blending those CMYK colours to make new, exciting ones.
When it came to designing the Nokia Lumia 620, Nokia didn’t just focus on the colours of the shells, there were other things to consider, too:
“One of the things we wanted from the Nokia Lumia 620 was to make it compact while still delivering the full WP8 experience,” says Daniel Dhondt from Nokia design, who worked with colleague Sawa Tanaka and others to create the unique design of the Nokia Lumia 620.

“To make this happen we needed to look at where to invest and miniaturise everything.”
Daniel explains how even making the slightest change to every component makes a difference to the final product. For example, by keeping the gap between the screen and the cover down to a minimum, creating a tight locking mechanism on the back shell and making a really rigid chassis all help to create device that feels, and is, solid and compact.
This compact smartphone has really struck a chord with people, as many of the online reviews show. Daniel speculates as to why that may be:
“It has all the essentials. It has a great operating system, lots of technology like front camera and NFC and it’s the right size for most people. It’s also priced right and it looks amazing. It’s a complete package that really stands out.”
In terms of helping it stand out, that’s partly down to the dual-shot colour process we mentioned earlier.
While dual-shot itself isn’t new, the way Nokia is using it to combine new existing colours to create new blends is. It adds something new and exciting to the mix, creating a special depth effect.

Sometimes you’re not sure if you’re looking at one colour, or two. It’s only when you look at the phone face-on that you see the two colours side by side around the edges.
Creating dual-shot shells is technically very difficult to do; it requires a two-stage injection-moulding process.
“First we make the inner shell and then the outer in the same machine. While both are still warm and fresh from the machine we pair them together. We then finish off with a precision machine to make sure everything is aligned perfectly. What we’re left with is a high-quality shell, that’s in fact two pieces, seamlessly joined.”
With a choice of seven colours currently available, there should be something to suit everybody,
There are two types of dual-shot shells; one that uses the one colour that’s transparent and layered over the white inner-shot, which provides a very bright and deep and magic feel; and the shells with two different colours, that give a more playful, saturated experience.

We asked if any more layers were on the pipe works; a tri-shot shell, for example.
“There’s nothing on the agenda currently. However, it’s technically possible. When one thing becomes possible, it’s only natural to think about new ways to evolve and improve and take it further. Who knows what the future brings.”
For the first time, Nokia also decided to house the audio-connector in the removable shell. Daniel tells me there were two reasons for this. The first was to make the phone as compact as possible, and being able to mount the connector in the case meant that a little extra space could be reduced in the phone. Also, placing the socket in the case meant it could flex a little bit more than if it were in the phone. This would make it just a little bit more resilient and less difficult for people to break. However, if that were to happen, all people would need to do is replace the shell.
The design decisions taken to produce the Nokia Lumia 620 has provided us with a compact smartphone that’s really caught people’s imaginations, inside and outside of Nokia. Its design is perfect for first-time smartphone owners, as well as kids, teenagers or students; it’s versatile.
