Nokia unveils Premium Developer Program for Asha

Main-Hero-Image-Open

Yesterday we wrote about our developer rewards program, DVLUP, and today we are happy to introduce the latest addition to our Premium Developer Program, this time focusing on Asha full touch developers.

The program follows in the footsteps of the Premium Developer Program for Lumia, which was launched late last year and is proving to be the most successful developer program ever launched by Nokia. Program members will enjoy a number of helpful benefits, crafted to make it easier for developers to create better apps and games for full touch Asha smartphones. Developers who create high quality Asha full touch apps will also be eligible for further benefits to improve the discoverability of their apps.

App-developer-main copy

We’ve seen the Nokia Asha ecosystem thrive as better and more affordable handsets go on sale. The quality and quantity of apps and games are also improving all the time, and things are about to get even better thanks to the new Asha Premium Developer Program. By providing resources beyond what’s provided by the standard Nokia Developer registration, the Asha Premium Developer Program improves developers’ chances of success.

App-development

The program has two tiers of benefits, with enhanced productivity tools and app promotion opportunities making a big difference to budding and experienced developers alike.

Enhanced productivity tools include:

  • A free Nokia Asha 310 smartphone for development.
  • Expanded Remote Device Access to test apps on a wide range of different Nokia Asha Devices.
  • Free tech tickets for Asha development support (valued at $198 USD).

App promotion opportunities include either:

  • Greater visibility and promotion on the Nokia Store.
  • Credit worth $500 USD to run paid ad campaigns on the Nokia Ad Exchange (NAX), with access to more than 120 advert networks worldwide.

(Developers will choose between app promotion or NAX credits when applying.)

app-developer-2

Developers are in for a treat when it comes to pricing, as membership in the Asha Nokia Premium Developer Program is free, but certain qualifications need to be met:

For free stage-one productivity membership, developers must provide links to two existing apps they have developed and published on any mobile platform.

To access stage-two app promotion tools, developers need to create and publish a new Java or web app for full touch Asha smartphones, and some pre-defined quality criteria need to be met.

Kenny Mathers, director of developer programs and monetisation at Nokia, explains:

“We want to reward apps that really engage the user. We’ll be looking for high-quality graphics and user interface, plus great user reviews,” with a minimum rating of four stars from at least 25 Nokia Store user reviews.

Explore the Asha Nokia Premium Developer Program and apply for membership today.

March Apps Madness 2013 – utilities and productivity apps

Nokia Apps Madness Utilities and Productivity

It’s the last day of the first round of March Apps Madness. So far, we’ve seen voting on gaming, social, and news + entertainment applications.

Today, we start voting on the next batch of our apps with Utilities and Productivity apps. These apps help us get through our day with ease, from lighting our way in the dark to making sure we’re on task with our projects.

If you need to research your choice and study the form, visit the Windows Phone Store – and remember, you can try the apps before you buy on a Nokia Lumia phone.

Under each pairing, select your favorite among the two choices below. We’ll take it from there.

Flashlight-X

Flashlight-x is claimed by its developers to be the only true and fastest flashlight app that uses phone’s LED flash to light up constantly. Flashlight-x is a utility tool that turns on instantly when you launch your app and does not change your screen’s image to give an illusion of light unlike other apps. It provides constant light without flickering!

- Uses Camera’s LED flash.

- Turns on INSTANTLY!

- FASTEST turn on time.

- NO flickering with NEW version!

- Flashlight-X icon looks great on your Start screen.

- Disables screen lock when the flash is ON!

- Runs under the lock.

- Use camera button to turn on/off.

- Shake the phone to turn on/off.

- SOS mode for emergency situations.

Connectivity Shortcuts

Connectivity Shortcuts allows you to easily access your Wifi, Bluetooth, Cellular, Airplane Mode and Location settings. It also allows you to place shortcuts to each of those directly on your startscreen (you will be taken to the according setting screens).

- 4 icon styles to choose from

- Editable Live Tile text

- Tile background can be chosen from all WP7 standard accent colors

Wifi and Cellular settings can display the current state (enabled/disabled) on their respective Live Tiles (updated only when backing out of settings, not when using the Start-Button).

Sharing photographs on Facebook with the Nokia Asha 205

Nokia-asha-facebook-photography-2

The Nokia Asha 205 is a great mobile phone when it comes to social networking and keeping in touch with your friends, but the affordable QWERTY handset also has another trick up its sleeve. Along with the integrated Facebook app, the Asha 205 features a camera that’s optimised to take full advantage of social networking. Read on for some top tips on taking and sharing your photographs using the Nokia Asha 205.

Pick up the Nokia Asha 205 and it’s apparent that this is a great phone if you want to enjoy social networks. There’s a button on the front to launch Facebook without delay, and the QWERTY keypad makes light work of status updates and messages.

The Asha 205 is also a useful device when it comes to sharing your images using Facebook. Photographs that you take using the Asha 205 are automatically configured to a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels, so they’ll appear without distortion on your Facebook timeline and your friends’ news feeds.

Nokia-asha-facebook-photography-9

It’s easy to upload your photographs to Facebook, too. Click on the Facebook button to get started.  Once you’ve opened the app, you can take new photographs and upload them straight to Facebook.

To take a photograph, click on the camera icon at the top right of the Facebook homescreen. As soon as you’ve taken the photograph you want to share, click ‘Done’. If you’re not happy with it, click ‘Retake’. Once you’re happy, you can add a message to go along with the photograph. The photograph and update will both appear on your Facebook wall and news feeds, and uploading is quick and easy.

There are a few things you can do to make your Facebook photographs even better when you’re using the Nokia Asha 205. Here are some of things I found the most useful:

Nokia-asha-facebook-photography-7

Keep still
This isn’t just our advice: open up the camera function in the Nokia Asha 205 and you’ll be told to ‘keep still’. This will help to keep your images as blur-free and sharp as possible, so it’s advice well worth following.

Shoot outdoors
The Nokia Asha 205’s natural habitat is the great outdoors, where it can take advantage of all the light on offer. The brighter the conditions, the more chance you’ll have of taking the perfect photographs, with your subjects bathed in light.

Stay near windows or bright lights
Sometimes you’ll still want to take snaps indoors with your Nokia Asha 205 though. When you do, remember to stay near windows or make sure you’re shooting where the lights are bright – the Asha 205 doesn’t have a flash, so needs all the light you can provide.

Nokia-asha-facebook-photography-6

Photograph static or slow moving objects
It’s important to keep still when you’re taking photographs, but you can also boost your chances of the perfect snap by photographing static or slow moving objects. You’ll still be able to shoot fast moving subjects if you’re quick enough, but it’s a lot easier if you can get your subject to hold still!

Order your sandwich by app, with Subway on your Nokia Lumia

Order your sandwhich by app, with Subway on your Nokia Lumia

For many, deciding what to have for lunch can depend on how easy it is to go out and buy it. Thankfully, the Subway app makes our lunch orders much easier as you can now order your sandwich right from your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

Download SubwaySubway

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the QR code
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Store

For frequent visitors to Subway restaurants, you’ll be familiar with the production line-like ordering process. You start at one end of the counter and work your way along pointing at the types of filling you want until you emerge at the other side where you swap money for your freshly prepared ‘Sub’.

It’s a good system, but why not skip it?

When you order your lunch using the Subway app, you’re bypassing the standing about and totally removing the sidestepping.

At first, the app will welcome you with a basic selection screen, and it’s here where you can either login to an existing SUBCARD® account, or create a new one if you wish. However, you don’t need to do this, this is Subway’s loyalty scheme where you can earn points for making purchases with the aim of receiving free food further down the line.

Subway-home Store-selection

The next tile is where you can decide where you want to purchase your lunch. Within that section, you’re able to browse through all the stores – ideal if you’re planning to be somewhere else later – or find your nearest store which taps into your phones GPS.

Whatever time you’re planning to have your lunch, or breakfast, or snack, you can select a specific pickup time from the aptly named ‘Pickup time’ tile.

Now, it’s time to order your food. Go ahead and tap on the ‘New tile’ to browse the menu.

Menu Success

The menu is really clear to understand and is split into categories. If you like your meal deals, select from the £2 Breakfast Deal, £3 Lunch Deal, or £5 Footlong Deal tiles. If you prefer to go à la carte, browse through the Subs, Breakfast, Salads, Wraps, or Kids Pak sections.

Continue through the process, selecting what types of bread, cheese, sauces etc. that you want, eventually finishing on the ‘Success!’ page. All you need to do is wait for the pickup time and go out and collect it.

When trying this out, I was a bit apprehensive about strolling in and cutting in front of people in the queue (very British of me), so I joined the back of the queue. However, when I reached the first person in the sandwich-making process, I was asked to go right to the front and collect my order.

If you’re a SUBCARD® member, now’s the perfect opportunity to present the on-screen QR code to the member of staff. They’ll scan it and add the points to your account.

In case anybody needed proof that this app works, here’s a photo of my lunch, ordered completely through the Subway app on my Nokia Lumia 620.

 Lunch

Currently, the Subway app only gives you access to Greater London stores – that’s about 184 stores (I counted).

Download Subway today from the Windows Phone Store – for free.

Lights out for Earth Hour

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Saturday March 23 between 8.30 and 9.30PM is Earth Hour. It’s the largest symbolic mass participation event in the world.

Nokia Phone Recycler
Use the Search button on your Lumia, then Bing Vision to scan the QR code.
recycler_link

And taking part is easy – just sign up at www.earthhour.org and switch off your lights.

Earth Hour this year will be celebrated by hundreds of millions of people in 7001 cities and towns across 152 countries. And Nokia will be taking part, too, with the lights being switched off at its main offices around the world at the appointed hour.

Of course, a one-hour blackout won’t be enough to solve the world’s climate issues. It’s a symbolic occasion to raise and maintain awareness of environmental issues.

earthhour

But Nokia’s commitment to the environment goes a long way beyond the symbolic. We have recently detailed the many ways in which we go to great lengths with the design and production of Nokia’s Lumia 820 to avoid environmental harm. And, of course, we’re always delighted when third-party organisations recognise our efforts in this area.

But for some areas we need our customers’ help. Nokia has an extensive recycling programme, for example, but it won’t be much use unless people are prepared to give up their old phones!

To help people learn more about how recycling phones works, and what happens to your old phone, the sustainability team has recently created a new game, Nokia Phone Recycler, which explains exactly what happens to each part of your phone after you’ve handed it over.

recycler3 recycler1

So, switch off your lights for a start – but then raid that kitchen drawer for the phones you’re hoarding.

5 cool videos for Nokia Lumia lovers we found on the Web this week

 Nokia-Lumia-920-lover-1

One thing about the Nokia Lumia family that never ceases to amaze us is how much creativity it inspires. To celebrate this (and to give us a fantastic excuse to surf the web) we’ll be putting together a weekly showcase of all the coolest Lumia themed videos we’ve discovered. This week’s fantastic five are as multifaceted and colourful as the Lumia itself.  To see for yourself, scroll on down.

Wide Web World

First up, “Wide Web World” is a stunning video created entirely by using the satellite images from Nokia’s HERE Maps 3D. Directed by Vimeo user Paul Wex, who also did the music for the piece, “World” it showcases amazing views from around the world, as seen through the eye of the app. All we can say is wow!

A hip hop surprise

If you’re a professor of hip hop the likelihood is you’re used to unusual days. But Portuguese musical academic, Bruno, had no idea his commute to work was going to be interrupted by a set put together by his idol DJ Ride. All caught in true candid camera style on a Nokia Lumia 920.

Jeremy’s secret

Fan videos done well are always epic and this one by Thom Starks had us grinning from ear to ear. Jeremy it seems has exceptionally good taste in smartphones for one so young.

 Low light lovers

Okay, so we know the Windows Phone Challenge has been around a while, but this brand new version hammers home  exactly why Nokia Lumia lovers love low light so much.

The most awesome unboxing video ever

There have been quite literally thousands of unboxing videos made. None, however, have ever been as awesome as this one for the Nokia Lumia 920.  A bold claim? Click play to have your mind blown.

That’s this weeks round of Lumia lushness. If you’ve found any other video gems be sure to share in the comments below.  Who knows they might just make it into next week’s fantastic five.
