Sony announces  Xperia™ion, its first LTE smartphone which will be available exclusively in the US for AT&T.

Xperia ion is really a gorgeous piece from Sony with a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 dual core processor with Adreno™ 220 GPU, which provides an enhanced level of 3D graphics performance. Xperia™ ion runs on the Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system and will get an update to Android™ 4.0 later. It has an amazing 4.6 inch HD display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine ideal for HD content viewing, game playing and web navigation. The phone is also a PlayStation™ Certified; and we know what it means from Xperia play. Interestingly, Sony decided to include a 12MP camera which will make it the first android of its kind. There is also a 1.3MP front camera good for video calling. Both the cameras are HD capable and it would be interesting to see some sample videos from the rear shooter. Connectivity options include DLNA, HDMI and BRAVIA sync which will make HD content sharing easy. Also the device has an NFC chip that makes it all a lot more easier.

So, Xperia ion in a nutshell:

  • 1.5 GHz dual-core processor for fast browsing and content download, which can be stored on the internal 16GB flash storage.
  • 12 MP rear camera with Sony Exmor R™ for mobile with fast/capture to go from standby to first shot in 1.5 seconds.
  • 4.6 inch HD Reality display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine, with HD resolution screen (1280 x 720), as well as rear (1080p) and front (720p) cameras for HD recording
  • PlayStation™ Certified and access to entertainment services from Sony Entertainment Network, like Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited..

Paul Hamnett, President, Sony Ericsson North America said,

“With Xperia ion, we’re bringing together several firsts that will take users beyond the smartphone. Designed to deliver a seamless experience across the multiple screens we use to play, watch, listen, and share, Xperia ion is the gateway to entertainment when and – most importantly – where you want it.”

Presenting the new Xperia S

RgsQwxVrFho

The Sony press conference has just finished and Sir Howard Stringer and Kaz Hirai of Sony have shared with us not only the new gadgets Sony is presenting at the 2012 International CES, but also announced the new Xperia™  S, the first  smartphone from the new Xperia™  NXT series-  the next generation smartphones from Sony*.

The new Xperia™  S is an Android smartphone that combines an impressive viewing experience through the high resolution 4.3 inch display with Mobile BRAVIA engine, a 12 MP camera that takes pictures in just 1.5 seconds from standby, and an amazing Sony HD experience. Xperia™  S also has a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor for a faster performance. Watching HD clips and movies is really a great experience on this phone. And I can’t wait to try out HD games on it! Xperia™  S also enables an easy connectivity experience with multiple screens, so that you can access, share and enjoy content on the screen that suits the situation: TV, smartphone, laptop or tablet.  We have talked about the increased connectivity between different screens before, and with Xperia™  S we will see more about the possibilities of sharing and accessing content easily, including NFC (near field communication), as Xperia™  S is NFC enabled.

Also, Xperia™  S will be able to access easily to the entertainment content from Sony Entertainment Network, such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited (in the countries where the services are available).  You can check if your country already has the services here.

Here is an overview of the key features for Xperia™  S:

  • 4.3 inch Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine with HD resolution screen (1280 x 720), as well as front (720p) and back (1080p) cameras for HD recording.
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor for fast browsing and content download, which can be stored on the internal 32GB flash storage.
  • 12MP back camera with Sony Exmor R™ for mobile along with Fastest Capture to take shots in just 1.5 seconds directly from standby mode.  Front-facing camera with 1.3 MP.
  • NFC (Near Field Communications) enabled to access growing range of NFC applications and services as well as Xperia SmartTags.
  • With HD sharing through DLNA, HDMI and using BRAVIA Sync for controlling your Xperia S with your TV remote control when connected to the TV, Xperia™  S delivers a full HD experience on TV.
  • PlayStation™ Certified, that guarantees a high quality smartphone gaming experience and access to the PlayStation® Store.

Also, the first things that I really liked about the Xperia™  S (apart from the great features we have already presented), from a first view, are the new design and the UI. Xperia™  S is the first smartphone that showcases a new design approach referred as “Iconic Identity”. You will be able to see this new design throughout the Xperia™  NXT series, and it creates a simple look that is instantly recognizable.

One of the main elements of the new design is the transparent element at the base of the phone. It creates an iconic silhouette, emphasizing the display, and also provides illumination effects and integrates the antenna components.

I have always loved is the User Interface from our phones. And for the Xperia™  NXT series, I think I will keep on liking it!  The user Interface has been redesigned to match the minimalistic design of the hardware. The home screen has a new colorful flow background making full usage of HD Reality Display and dual-core processing power.

Xperia™  S will be available to consumers globally from the first quarter 2012. Launching on Android platform 2.3 (Gingerbread) Xperia™  S will be upgraded to Android platform 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) during the second quarter 2012.

If you want more information about Xperia™  S, check out the press release here.  And don’t miss more information about this launch, and all what is happening in the 2012 International CES this week on this blog! We have great things in store!

LiveWare™ manager can be installed by all phones (including other brands) running Android, which gives you as a developer a huge potential user base.

The Smart Extension SDK is an easy to use, intent based SDK, making it possible to access the display, widgets, notifications and other general controls through the following APIs:

  • Notification API: this API is typically used by simple event driven data providers such as SMS, MMS, Missed calls, Facebook, Twitter and so on.
  • Control API: this is the most advanced API, giving you full control of the accessory screen.
  • Widget API: this is an API enabling you to display a widget on the accessory.
  • Sensor API: this API makes the sensor data of the accessory (e.g. vibrator and accelerometer data) available to the Extensions application.

The SDK comes with code examples, an emulator, white papers and full documentation (including javadocs). Download the Smart Extension SDK to get started today!

So what do you think? What kind of apps and usecases would you like to see for these two products? Feel free to drop a comment below.

Note! It is currently not possible to use the emulator included in the SDK, due to the delay of a new LiveWare™ manager version on Android Market. We will try to resolve this issue as soon as possible, and make a note here once it is done. If you have already installed the emulator, you will need to re-install it when you install the new version of LiveWare™ manager. The emulator will only work with LiveWare™ manager version 3.1.13 and onwards.

NFC-support in new Xperia™ devices

sonyericsson_nfc
sonyericsson_nfc

For illustrative purposes only. Not for commercial use or re-sale. Use of “Sony” brand subject to regulatory approval.

Yesterday we announced the new Xperia™ S and the Xperia™ SmartTags, as well as the Xperia™ ion for the US market. This marks an exciting new era, as these are the first Xperia™ devices supporting NFC. But what is really NFC? Surely you’ve heard about it, and know it’s expected to be widely used in the future. But how does it work, and how will it be used? In this article, you will get to know more about the technology, some of the use cases and how we will work with NFC initially.

NFC stands for Near Field Communication, and it’s a technology that enables data exchange between devices within a short distance, typically only a few centimetres. In most cases, the communication takes place between an active device and a non-powered target, but peer-to-peer interaction between two powered devices is also possible. Transfer rates are low, ranging from 106 Kbit/s to 424 Kbit/s, which means that use cases are all about small data exchanges. A typical use case would be to use the NFC connection as a trigger to set up Bluetooth™ or Wi-Fi™ connections.

With the new Xperia™ S, Xperia™ SmartTags and the Xperia™ ion supporting NFC, it will enhance the user experience of social applications and entertainment. You could tag your friends in a photo, or initiate multi-player games by tapping your handsets together. Check in at places, or even “like” things Facebook-style in real life by reading an NFC tag. Hold your phone close to a pair of speakers to start playing your music. These are some examples of existing and possible uses of the NFC technology. Since it is an open system, any app developer can come up with their own unique use cases.

Another use case is simplified secure transactions using apps like Google Wallet. With Google Wallet, you can have a virtual credit card and simply tap your phone at a reader in the store. You can also store virtual cards for things like customer loyalty information, access to buildings and transportation tickets.

NFC can be separated into three different technical modes which all suit different use cases: reader/writer mode, peer-to-peer mode and card emulation mode. When developing your own NFC-enabled app, you will find out that the different modes all cater to different needs, which are introduced below. In the Android SDK you find the information you need to get started with NFC in your own apps.

For illustrative purposes only. Not for commercial use or re-sale. Use of “Sony” brand subject to regulatory approval.

Interact with NFC tags using Reader/Writer mode
Reader/Writer mode is when the phone is the active part and reads data from or writes to an NFC tag. In Reader/Writer mode the phone is generating a field that is used to read information from passive tags that do not have any power source of their own. When you put a passive tag in the field close to a phone, the tag uses the field from the phone to send data back to the phone.

Many of the possible uses of NFC in reader/writer mode are about simplifying existing use cases. Instead of scanning a QR code – which requires installing a QR-reader app, opening the reader and scanning the QR code – you can simply touch an NFC tag with your phone with the screen lit up to get the same information. Bluetooth pairing is another use case that is made much easier: instead of searching for the gadget you want to connect to, you tap it with your phone and the pairing is done automatically.

Since NFC tags are available at relatively low cost, and can be produced in many different shapes, they can also be used to introduce physical real-world elements into games. For example, to go to the next level, you might have to find and read a tag at a certain place in your city.

Use P2P mode for smooth content sharing
With the new Xperia™ S and Xperia™ ion, you will be able to share content in a really easy way. When touching another NFC device with your phone, the application in use will automatically send the active content, for example, the track that is currently playing in the Media player, or the contact displayed on the screen if you are browsing through your contacts.

In Xperia™ S and Xperia™ ion, this function is enabled in the pre-installed Gallery, Music player, Web browser and Contacts. In our sharing function NFC is normally used to initiate the connection and then handover is done to a faster bearer such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which makes it work well for locally stored content.

To share content between two devices, peer-to-peer mode is used. This is suitable whenever multi-pass communication is needed, which means the two devices have to talk to each other and confirm the interaction. This mode is defined by the NFC Forum, who defines the NFC standard, and differentiates NFC from earlier proprietary RFID variants, which only works between an active device and a passive tag.

Android Beam is the standard Android implementation of P2P mode which is introduced in the Ice Cream Sandwich release. It works for sharing small pieces of content, for example links to web content. Using Android Beam, you can add the possibility for users to share content from your own app. However, there is no support in Android Beam for the handover to Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Card emulation mode – it’s all about secure transactions
The card emulation mode is used for secure transactions, such as payments, transportation tickets, or when using the phone to access buildings. The card emulation mode can always be active in the phone, since the phone functions as a tag and there is no need to generate a field from the phone. The phone only needs to be ready to respond when being close to an NFC reader. If allowed by the service provider, card emulation can even work when the phone is switched off. Writing applications for card emulation mode requires the opportunity to access the secure element, which most developers don’t have.

Using Xperia™ SmartTags
Xperia™ SmartTags will be available in bundled kits together with certain phones in our Xperia™ 2012 portfolio (bundling options may differ between markets). An Xperia™ SmartTag is a read-only tag, containing an ID. In the LiveWare™ manager application you can configure what action that should be performed when a certain Xperia™ SmartTag is read. This means that reading the tag will have a result that is specific for your phone, while reading the same tag with a differently configured phone will give another result. For example, you can set up a special “work tag” at your desk, which will trigger the ringtone volume to be lowered and music to be turned off.
