Interview with Square Enix, on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’s exclusive Xperia™ launch!

Hey guys,
Today, the ultimate gaming heroine, Lara Croft, leaps onto Xperia smartphones as an Android exclusive treat. Featuring an arcade style fixed camera view, the game has already been a console success and is now available across our Xperia smartphone devices, including Xperia S, Xperia ion and Xperia PLAY!
Guardian of Light follows Lara’s adventures through Mayan ruins as she joins an ancient tribesman named Totec to take down an evil threat – Lara and Totec must use their own set of unique skills to work together and fight through each level.
We sat down with Ben Cusack, ‘Brand and Marketing Director – Mobile’, at Square Enix Europe, to pick the brain behind bringing Lara to Xperia smartphones…
Obviously Lara Croft is a HUGE franchise; popular in both gaming and film, what do you think the mobile version brings to the mix?
Lara Croft is the first lady of gaming and continues to have millions of fans worldwide. By bringing Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light to mobile, consumers can experience the action, adventure and puzzles synonymous with the franchise, available to play anytime, anywhere. Next year is a huge year for the Tomb Raider series, with the next major console game being released, so the launch of the Android version is great timing to keep new and existing fans busy over the coming months and beyond.
The game is set in Central America and brings to life ancient Mayan lore; how does this setting test Lara on her adventures?
Two thousand years ago in ancient Central America, a battle began between Totec, the Guardian of the Light, and Xolotl, the keeper of darkness. Totec’s army was defeated when Xolotl used the mirror of smoke to unleash hordes of ghastly creatures. Totec survived the battle, and found a way to defeat Xolotl, imprisoning him in the mirror of smoke and watching over the mirror as an immortal stone statue.
In present day, Lara Croft reads of the legend and attempts to find the mirror. After a long and dangerous hike she is successful. She stops to observe the mirror, only to find that a band of mercenaries led by the local warlord followed her into the temple and took the mirror from her. Unknowing, or unbelieving of the curse upon the mirror, the leader of the mercenaries handles the mirror and recklessly releases Xolotl. The stone statue of Totec comes to life and warns Lara that Xolotl must be stopped before the light of dawn.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an action/adventure game featuring Lara Croft, and this brand extension combines the hallmarks of the Tomb Raider franchise including exploration & discovery, platforming, and puzzle solving combined with character progression, fun fast-paced combat, and elements of cooperation and competition.
The game’s mix of cryptic puzzles and high-action gameplay is integral to the Lara Croft/Tomb Raider series, but are there any new features you’re particularly excited about?
Players can choose to play as Lara or Totec – each playable character possess unique weapons and skills. Like with some previous installments, Lara retains her dual pistols with infinite ammunition and a grappling hook, which she is able to use to cross gaps and which Totec can tightrope walk across. Totec carries spears which can be used both as a weapon and on the environment, for Lara to climb on. Both characters carry unlimited “bombs” that can be dropped and detonated. Tombs can be explored and some have “booby-trap puzzles” to solve.
The Tomb Raider 2013 title features a much younger and more vulnerable Lara. How does this compare with the Lara we see in the Guardian of Light?
The team at Crystal Dynamics are developing something truly special for next year’s console launch, going back to the origins of Lara’s life as an adventurer. Guardian of Light is set in the present day and is a standalone game. The two games play out at very different times in Lara’s life but by playing next year’s console release, players will understand more about the Lara they play in Guardian of Light…
The game will be optimized for Xperia PLAY – how will his enhance the mobile gameplay?
The Xperia Play’s physical buttons either side of the screen will add a new dimension to the game, allowing players to enjoy all the action on the screen at all times.
How integral is the port to Android to your overall mobile strategy? How do you see it as a development platform?
With over 900k Android devices activated each day, the platform allows us to open up our existing and new games to more consumers. We’re serious about developing for Android and are continually looking at platform trends, successes and learnings to ensure we develop and publish enjoyable and immersive mobile entertainment. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the first of a host of games hitting the platform over the coming months.

Keep up with the Tour de France on your Nokia Lumia

There’s no denying that the Tour de France is never boring.
There are spectacular crashes, the constant whiff of doping scandals and the stunning images from the final day when hundreds of riders cycle along the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
However, enthusiasts will tell you it is also one of the most gruelling sporting events in the world and the ultimate test of human endurance.
‘Le Tour’ covers approximately 3,200km (2,000 miles) in three weeks over mountainous terrain and all weather conditions.
As the Tour de France 2012 enters the crucial final week, we have selected three apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace for your Nokia Lumia to ensure that you are never far away from the action.
Le Tour, FREE

This app is a great place to start for newcomers to ‘Le Tour’ as well as seasoned followers.
It gives an overview of each of the stages, current standings, a #tdf ‘tweets’ news hub and results as they come in.
Everything Cycling, FREE

Not a specific app for the Tour de France, but indispensable for serious cycling fans.
Get the latest from the Tour de France in the form of feeds from Cycling News and VeloNews. It also allows you to filter information, for example, you can search for your favourite cyclist or by subject.
MetroTour, £0.79p

This is a dedicated app for the Tour de France that looks good, is easy to use and has lots of information.
It has the latest standings, a live Twitter feed, a database, which can be accessed offline, about the stages, riders, teams and even includes historical information about the Tour de France.
The latest version of the app lets you pin categories to your Lumia home screen.

Small and medium businesses need these apps for success

Running a small to medium sized business (SMB) is a balancing act. Between non-stop meetings, keeping on top of office communications and managing expenses, those who work at or own their own business can be stressed.
Thankfully, for Nokia Lumia owners, there are a suite of apps that keep you connected to your enterprise, no matter where you go. If your business uses common business desktop systems, you’ll be happy to know your Lumia is well equipped to mobilize your office work.
Phones like the Nokia Lumia 900, Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 are perfect for those in business because the phones can easily switch from personal phones to enterprise-connected productivity machines in no time. Let’s dig in and see what apps business folk should be sure they are using on a daily basis.
Coresuite Mobile
Businesses live and die based on data, and being in touch with your organization’s ERP system is vital to your productivity. Coresuite allows you to access your ERP reports, and important contact information of your business partners and contacts into your Lumia’s address book. Coresuite Mobile supports SAP and Microsoft Dynamics, which are two of the most common cloud-based ERP systems in place today.
Business Expense Tracker
Keeping tabs on your business expenses can be tedious and monotonous. Business Expense Tracker helps you keep tabs on the most common expenses any business trip woudl include. The well designed home screen has easy-to-access options such as meal, mileage, airfare and so on. Then, you enter the expense, track your payment method and generate/email reports on the fly. It’s quite handy.
Plancentric Timesheet
Timesheets are another fact of business that cost valuable time and expense when running a business. For companies that use Plancentric, you’ll be happy to know that Plancentric Timesheet is available in the marketplace and makes it possible to track activities, costs and billable time all on your mobile. This app is a great mobile extension of your timesheet.
Stay in the know with Yammer
Yammer is a popular service for intra-company communications. Think of it as a private Twitter-like service that can serve as a virtual water cooler. Yammer allows you to communicate with co-workers down the hall, down the street or across the Internet. Regular Yammer users are aware of the great web service and Mac and PC apps.
Also, Yammer is available for Windows Phone, meaning you can be in the think of conversation, even if you’re on the go. I like to keep up with office chatter while I’m waiting in lines or at the doctor’s office, for example.
Yammer for Nokia Lumia lets you post messages, receive notifications of missed messages and receive updates all on your phone. If your company uses Yammer (or will soon), load up the app and don’t miss a beat even through you’re not at your desk.

Chrync syncs your Chrome bookmarks to Lumia

The design documents for Windows Phone say you should ‘avoid chrome’ when it comes to user-interface design on the platform. That may be so, but there’s one piece of Chrome that I very much welcome on my Nokia Lumia 800, and that’s the bookmarks from my Chrome desktop browser. New app Chrync performs this synchronisation and more.
Naturally, you need to have the Chrome browser on another computer, a connected account and a collection of bookmarks for this app to be any use. (Although, if your preference is for a different browser, you could download Chrome simply to import the bookmarks from your favoured browser).
Let’s assume you’ve managed to overcome this hurdle.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed the app, simply enter your Google account credentials on the opening screen. Give it a minute or two, and you’ve got all your desktop bookmarks on your phone.

Not just those, but also any passwords you’ve stored, open tabs and your ‘Omnibox’ history. You can exclude any of these if you wish – you might decide having account passwords on your mobile phone isn’t a great idea, for example, particularly if you don’t use a PIN code to lock the device.
This is really very useful. Typing long internet addresses is painful on any mobile phone, with zero-tolerance for typos. Any way to get all the site addresses you need without effort is enormously welcome.
Chrync maintains its own list of synchronised bookmarks, rather than merging them into the ones you have in Internet Explorer. At first, this seemed like an unfortunate decision, and that it would be better to have all your bookmarks in one place.
However, the separation has its merits, too. There are a number of sites that I only visit from my phone – such as the mobile versions of news and magazine sites. Having those frequently used sites in a separate place to the 100+ bookmarks I’ve got from my desktop machine keeps the Internet Explorer list lean and functional.

There’s really very little else to say about Chrync: it does one important job really well and without fuss. The app costs just 0.79p/0.99c on the Marketplace and a free trial is available.

8 must-have apps for your new PureView 808
The Nokia PureView 808 is now on sale in the USA on Amazon.com and new owners are opening their boxes and setting up their phones.
This post will serve as a guide to first-timers who want to get the best applications the Nokia Store has to offer to accompany the fantastic 808 PureView and its amazing camera technology.
The social networking powerhouse
Gravity is by far the most popular app amongst my friends who own the 808 PureView. The application is first and foremost an amazing Twitter client, with lock screen notifications to keep you in the loop on misses messages, a fast and amazing interface, and full support for all your favorite Twitter features. Gravity also works as a client for Facebook, Foursquare, Google Reader and StatusNet. The app costs $9.99 and can be found in the Nokia Store.
Easy access to your favorite app
Do you have one app you use multiple times throughout the day? Perhaps it’s your favorite messaging application or Twitter app. ShakeAndGo accomplishes one thing – and it does it well. With this app, simply shake your phone and the app launches. I know a few WhatsApp users who rely on this shortcut to access their missed messages easily.
Give it a shot – it’s a mere $0.99 in the Store.
Listen to Internet radio
Do you have an Internet based radio station that you couldn’t live without? Perhaps you can’t work without Soma.FM’s Groove Salad in your ears. Check out Nokia Internet Radio – the app works over 3G or Wi-Fi to give you beats and music no matter where you are. You can even favorite stations for easy access later.
Access and control your phone from the home screen
Widgets on the home screen are a really nice feature – and Extra Buttons allows you to place anywhere from 2-4 additional buttons on your 808 PureView’s screen. You can select amongst these options: lock/restart button, task switcher, brightness control, and battery/power saving mode. Extra Buttons gives you quick access to the system preferences.
Add filters and effects to photos
It seems snapping a photo and adding cool filters is all the rage these days. Molome is the best app for adding filters and then sharing photos via social networks such as Twitter. To use Molome – download the application, shoot a photo, apply your filters and affects and share. The Molome community is strong and allows you to “Love” others photos and see popular ones on the network.
Enhance your standby screen
By default, the standby screen is pretty boring on the 808 PureView. It shows the time, date and a notification of missed calls or SMS messages. However, if you want to spice it up, check out Nokia Sleeping Screen. This attractive and functional app adds nice visuals and a more interactive and interesting display showing all the before-mentioned notifications, along with email alerts. Sleeping Screen is highly customizable and functional too.
Show your photos and videos on your TV
Of course the 808 PureView has an amazing camera – and displaying your captured photos and videos on to your TV can be done in an easy step with Nokia Play To. Using DLNA, Play To (you will need a Smart TV, Xbox 360 or similar DLNA receiver connected to your TV) pushes the images and pushes the images and videos to your TV, showing off your amazing pics on your TV. This is a very cool app.
Master Flickr on your 808 PureView
There’s no denying that Flickr is one of the web’s best sites for sharing photos. FlickrUp is an app that unlocks Flickr on your 808 PureView – making it possible to view your photo stream, photos from your Flickr contacts and explore photos from the all Flickr users. I like the upload capabilities on FlickrUp – allowing you to queue your uploads from the 808 and manage the process from beginning to end.
What are your favorite apps for the 808 PureView?
