Tips for recording concerts on your Nokia 808 PureView

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Last week I provided definitive proof that the Nokia 808 PureView is fairly idiot-proof when it comes to taking great photos.

It’s a great camera phone because it is so easy for a novice photographer, such as myself, to use but its different settings also allow more advanced users to get the results they want as well.

We have previously published some tips and tricks to help people make the most of 808 PureView’s camera.  You can still read Parts 1 and Part 2 of our help guide.

Nokia 808 PureView

Video recording

As well as pin-sharp still images, it is worth remembering that the 808 PureView is also a very special device for recording HD video. When you combine this with its Rich Recording technology, it is not a huge leap forward to conclude that the 808 PureView will be quite something for recording music performances.

One person who has noticed this is EasycapExpertii, an 808 PureView enthusiast from Finland who has set up a website dedicated to showcasing music recordings made with the device.

Considering the 808 PureView has only been available for a few months, or even a few weeks in some places, the website already has concert videos featuring the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Foo Fighters and many other big name acts.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

An expert’s tips

EasycapExpertii has shared several tips with Nokia Conversations so that you can also make great recordings with your 808 PureView.

  • Be careful that you are not covering the microphone with your hands. The 808 PureView has two mics for stereo recording – one at the top and the other at the bottom of the phone (as you hold it vertically).
  • Use a tripod or a handheld stabiliser wherever possible. For a tripod mount and other accessories for the 808 PureView see this Conversations post.
  • If you are moving around, do not try to change focus! Wait until you have come to stop and then adjust the focus for the best results.
  • If you are recording at a concert, try to stay within 50m of the stage. Beyond this distance the audio will be fine, but the video will suffer because of the lighting, or lack of it.
  •  If the performer is standing underneath a spotlight, use the Spotlight scene mode on the 808 PureView. This setting is designed for great contrasts where someone is standing underneath a bright light or in front of a dark background.

Have you been filming any videos with your 808 PureView? Do you have any tips for capturing great videos and great sound?

What’s on your home screen, Ben Rudolph?

Pink Lumia 900

We’re continuing our series where we ask Nokia users how they are putting apps and live tiles to use on their Lumia phones.

Today, we’re asking Ben Rudolph, a super enthusiastic Microsoft Evangelist who you probably recognize from the amazing “Smoked by Windows Phone” series of videos. Ben is based in Redmond, Washington, and absolutely loves Windows Phone – and it shows.

So, Ben, what’s on your home screen?

Top home screen

Right now my Nokia Lumia of choice is the new pink AT&T model. I used a magenta Lumia 800 for months before the 900 came out and the color was GREAT for catching the attention of passers-by; I love the fact that it’s bright and bold. And besides…real men rock pink phones.

Note: Ben has two black belts and has taught close-quarter-combatives for law enforcement… so don’t try to take his pink phone from him!  :-)

My first start screen is all business

It has:

  • Phone tile: Because it is, after all, still a phone.
  • Amazing Weather:  This is my new weather app of choice.  It has a beautiful live tile that toggles between the current conditions and the day’s forecast, and the app itself is accurate, well Designed, and has a great depth of information.  And it’s tied to GPS, so the live tile changes with your location.
  • Outlook Mail: Email is probably the #1 thing I do on my phone. It keeps me connected to the office without being in the office.
  • My Me tile:  Perfect for quick check-ins and tweets
  • Calendar: So I know where to go for my next meeting
  • Rowi: My hands-down favorite Twitter app for Windows Phone. Fast, well designed and has a great, fast-refreshing live tile that shows mentions and DM’s.
  • Messaging: Texting is a close second to email for me, so it gets prime real estate

 Next eight tiles

  • Pictures: I’m a proud dad of three so I like to have photos of the little ones at the ready at all times. I never miss an opportunity to show them off.
  • IE:  For obvious reasons
  • The other tiles on this section of my start screen are all Groups & People. I have dedicated tiles for my wife, my extended family, and tiles for two Twitter lists I keep an eye on – one for Microsoft corporate handles, and one for Microsoft Top Tweeters

Next eight tiles

This is where I keep my social and entertainment stuff.

  • Facebook: For when I need a deeper experience than the Me Tile.  I don’t use this a ton, but it’s nice to have when I’m having a busy Facebook day (like this week, when we *finally* closed on our new house after seven months of painful negotiations!)
  • 4th & Mayor: This is my favorite Foursquare app.  It’s fast, metro-styled, and has really cool Live Tile options.
  • YamPhone+:   This is a really great Live Tile-powered Yammer app. It’s how I stay connected to my internal Microsoft social network.
  • Xbox Live: Because all work and no play makes Ben a dull boy (BTW, my favorite game is Wordament, and addicting multiplayer word game.  Go get it.)
  • Music + Videos:  I think this is self-explanatory.
  • Marketplace:  100,000 apps and counting!
  • My ContacTile:  This is a really cool app – just input your contact info and it’ll generate a QR code that you can pin to your Start Screen.  Scan it, and your contact info gets instantly imported to the scanner’s phone.  It’s almost completely replaced business cards for me.

The rest of my Start Screen

You can tell by now I have a lot of stuff pinned to my Start Screen. That’s what it’s there for, right? This is where I have my lesser used-but-still-important apps.

Below that is my “News” Section that includes

As you can see, Ben Rudolph is making use of his home screen in a very complete way.  Have you found any apps that you didn’t know about?

Weather Channel app for Lumia gets a major redesign and new features

Awesome weather

We’re happy to announce a new version of The Weather Channel app only for your Nokia Lumia with a re-vamped look and feel, unique social weather tie-ins with the People Hub and some other really cool features.

All weather apps can provide weather data such as temperature, current conditions and a forecast for the coming days. The new Weather Channel app does this extremely well, in fact, the entire application has been re-designed to bring the most important data up front to the app user. However, it’s the new social features that set this weather app apart.

First, let’s look at My Friends Weather – Import your top 5 Facebook friends and see how weather is affecting your friends and family. Is a storm headed towards your mom? Text, email or call her right from the app. Ready to waterski at your best friend’s lake house? Know the weather before they do and invite yourself for a visit.

Social Weather Alerts – if there is a breaking weather event for your social network, you’ll be the first to know about it. It’s nice to know when something adverse is headed your friends’ way!

Sometimes you want to know when the perfect weather conditions are coming up. Perhaps you want to host a garage sale and want temps in the 70’s with no chance of rain, to sell all your stuff. Amazing Day Alerts will give you a personalized heads-up when the weather is ideal for your favorite activity.

Have an amazing weather moment to share? Whip out your phone and capture a panoramic image of a storm cloud or other weather event and your photo might be seen on The Weather Channel or on Weather.com. To see other image captures, go to iwitness.weather.comand view the gallery

In addition, the app continues global Live Tile support, get expert forecast details, national weather and storm watch updates from your favorite cities right on your start screen.

Plus, don’t forget to check out the cool Augmented Reality feature.  See the weather in a new way. Simply hold up your phone camera and scan the horizon for current, user-submitted photos posted from the same direction in which you are looking.

The Weather Channel has designed their app for Nokia Lumia phones to be a premier source for weather data and with social integration, you can take you weather experience to a whole new level! Only on Nokia Lumia! Download the updated version from your Lumia phone in Marketplace today.

App vs App: CNN v Sky News

Television News

Journalism is a competitive business with newsrooms eager to break exclusive stories, be the first with breaking news and to trump their fierce rivals in the war for ratings.

With this dog-eat-dog spirit in mind, we’re pitting two newsgathering giants against each other to see who has the better Windows Phone app for your Nokia Lumia. It’s a transatlantic showdown between CNN and Sky News.

The ‘Splash’ Screen

In the trade, the main story on the front page of a newspaper is called the ‘splash’ and is probably the most important decision that an editor will make. After all, the front page is intended to lure readers into buying the paper, as well as informing them.

Now, in the digital world, it is the homepage that is the most important feature of a news website. People want an instant snapshot of up-to-date news that is well presented with nice pictures.

How do our two apps compare on the ‘splash’ front?

CNN and Sky News

The first thing you see on the CNN app is a single top story with a wide picture, headline and a couple of lines from the introduction (the standfirst in journalism-speak). To see more stories you need to swipe the screen across to get a list of the latest news.

Sky’s app opens up with much more comprehensive ‘Top Stories’ screen. It’s a simple list of news stories featuring a small picture with an accompanying headline. There are half a dozen stories at first glance and even more if you scroll down.

I can see what CNN are trying to do with their one prominent story, but overall I prefer Sky’s approach that offers me more top stories at a single glance.

CNN 0 – Sky News 1

Customisation

Both apps are fairly disappointing when it comes to customisation.

I was hoping I could filter my areas of interest, such as business, entertainment, sport and so on but neither CNN nor Sky News offer this. You need to scroll through their categories to find those stories, rather than have it automatically surfaced to you.

On CNN though, within the settings, you can choose between US or international news. You can also choose from three different font sizes.

CNN 1 – Sky News 1

Multimedia

As you would expect from these two broadcasters, video reports are well represented in their apps.

On the Sky News app, video reports are embedded within a text story. So where they have a video report available, you will see a video icon over the picture. They also have a separate video section where you can watch dedicated bulletins on the Headlines, Showbiz, Weather or Radio (top stories in audio).

Sky News

Perhaps, best of all on the Sky News app you can watch their TV channel live, both on Wi-Fi and over a data connection.

CNN also has a host of video reports for you to watch but unfortunately there is no TV streaming.

What you can do is enlarge the top picture on each of the CNN article pages. This is actually quite useful because they are cropped so small that they look much better full screen.

However, for the ability to watch the live TV channel, Sky News just edges this one.

CNN 1 – Sky News 2

Coverage

This is difficult to judge because Sky News has a largely UK-focussed news agenda, whereas CNN is much more internationally-minded.

Here are the respective categories that they each cover:

CNN: Top Story, Latest News, Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle, US, Europe, World Business, World Sport, Entertainment, Tech, Travel and US Election.

Sky News: Top Stories, UK News, World News, Politics, Business, Showbiz, Sport and Strange!

(Strange! is a selection of weird and fun stories. Sample headline: “Sacre Bleu: French Admit They Are Rude”)

Overall, I would have to say that CNN has the more comprehensive and wider breadth of coverage.

CNN 3 – Sky News 2

Interaction & Live Tiles

As you would expect, social media is a feature on both the apps. It is very easy to share and tweet individual articles with your friends. However, neither app lets you comment on the stories.

Of the two, CNN takes interactivity to a much higher level.

iReport

Their iReport initiative, which encourages citizen journalism, is enabled through the app, so you can send your stories to them, after you’ve set up your account. You can also read other iReport articles.

Sky News has a ‘Your Report’ equivalent but this is really a perfunctory contact us form. Sky News’ Discuss screen is similarly disappointing as it is merely a link to their website blogs.

CNN also wins out with a Live Tile, news alerts and a shake to refresh option, all three of which are absent from Sky News.

CNN 3 – Sky News 1

Conclusion

So, right at the finish line, CNN steal a victory over Sky News. Both are good news apps, but CNN’s just had a little more depth and a couple more advanced features. However, the ability to watch the live TV channel is worth another mention on the Sky News app.

CNN is my winner, but feel free to disagree in the comments box below. Or do you have an alternative news app that you think is better than both CNN and Sky News?

Digital desires and Connected Cars: the future of auto

 Digital desires and Connected Cars

The concept of the Connected Car – which is based on computer and sensor technology to make driving more of a pleasure – is getting a lot of attention these days. Far from being a futuristic concept, many elements are here already and others are very close indeed to becoming a reality.

Many foundational elements are common in a car’s dashboard functionality today – streaming music from our phone, built-in navigation systems and phone call accessibility can all be controlled from the steering wheel.

More advanced applications include traffic-enabled navigation systems and Places of Interest (POI) search capability for restaurants and parking locations. The technology that will be brought to market in the near future will focus on deeper personalisation, which will be powered by what many call intelligent technology.

Ford EVOS Concept-dashboard

Industry research findings show that the next generation of drivers are ready for it. A recent survey by JCI found that people in their 30s and younger wanted full connectivity in their cars with visualisation, touchscreens, synchronisation and power charging for smartphones and tablet PCs, as well as location-based services such as automatic directions to petrol stations.

These digital desires go even deeper into personalisation by revealing that the next generation wants to know not only the location of a petrol station but also which one in the area has the cheapest prices, or which stations are most convenient for the route the driver is taking to get to their destination.

Many companies are supporting the development and integration of this intelligent technology for auto manufacturers . Ford is one that is pushing the boundaries of connected-car services. The Ford Evos is a perfect example.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Our Location & Commerce business is working with Ford as one of its integrators to bring this intelligent technology to market. This side of our business has expanded beyond mobile phones and includes products such as global location content, as well as scalable cloud services and APIs, which comprise Nokia’s Location Platform and support the Ford Evos concept car.

The car can learn about your driving habits and automatically adjust steering, handling and other functions. It also knows your commute details, the route you take most frequently, as well as what you do when you get in the car, such as playing a certain song, style of music, or tuning into a radio station.

Ford EVOS Concept-construction

Satnav maps can help drivers preview and avoid areas of heavy pollution and congestion or adjust the car setup to minimise the effects of these issues. In addition to its high-technology backbone, it is a hybrid vehicle, meaning that the battery kicks in automatically when the car is travelling through certain areas, highways or downhill roads, to save on fuel and/or reduce carbon emissions.

We’re going to see a lot of connected cars over the next few years as the digital world moves deeper into the automotive sector; the result will be a personalized driving experience that is smarter, greener and simply better.
