Five camera apps for your Nokia 808 PureView

To suggest that you could radically improve the camera in the Nokia 808 Pureview with the addition of a few apps would be pure folly.
After all, Digital Photography Review, a publication that normally looks at digital SLR cameras rather than mere camera phones, has just given it a highly prized Gold Award.
However, by installing a few apps from the Nokia Store, you can explore some creative, social and downright quirky tools that you can use with the 808 PureView’s camera.
Here are five apps that will add an extra dimension to Nokia’s world-beating camera phone.
App for lenses: Camera Lover Pack, £1.50

The Camera Lover Pack is an app created by imaging specialists, Scalado, a company from which Nokia has recently acquired technology and developers for future products.
There are five different lenses to play with:
- PhotoRama: Stitch three shots together to create panorama
- PhotoTwister: Apply a host of different and adjustable psychedelic effects
- PhotoFusion: Fuse two photos together with 12 templates to choose from
- Retromatic: Apply a retro, sepia-tinged look to your photos
- Multimatic: Take a burst of several shots in a set sequence
What’s really impressive about the Camera Lover Pack is how easy the different lenses are to use. It’s all done ‘live’ on the camera display so you can see the image/effect before committing to take the picture. If you don’t like it what you’re seeing on the screen, just start again or adjust the settings.
Especially useful for the Nokia 808 PureView is that you can change the size of the image you’re taking (3264×2448, 2592×1944 or 1600×1200), so you can really make the most of that super sensor.
App for photo sharing: MOLOME, FREE

If the Polaroid camera was all about taking photos instantly, then the camera phone is all about sharing photos instantly.
MOLOME is a fully featured app that lets you apply fun effects to your photos before sharing them on your favourite social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, Weibo or even the cloud storage service, Dropbox.
After installing the app, you need to register a MOLOME account and you can then link this account with your existing social networks.
You can take a new photo from within the app or select an existing one from your gallery, and then you select a desired effect, such as Cartoon, Vintage, Charcoal or Tilt Shift.
Once you are happy with how the photo looks you have the option of adding a caption before uploading to as many of your social networks as you wish. For example, you can upload to Twitter but not to Facebook, or you can upload to both simultaneously.
App for video animations – Stoppola, FREE
We already know that the Nokia 808 PureView is a fantastic HD video recording device and earlier this week, we wrote about the benefits of using it for capturing concerts.
Stoppola is a free app that lets you create beautiful stop-motion animations and time-lapse videos with your 808 PureView.
Watch this funky video, which was filmed on an 808 PureView using Stoppola.
Click here to view the video on YouTube.
Even though it’s just a free app, Stoppola certainly has enough features to let your imagination run riot. You can cut and paste frame by frame and add an audio soundtrack either from an existing MP3 or by recording a new track with your 808 PureView.
Once you’ve finished you can share your masterpiece with the world by uploading the video to YouTube, directly within Stoppola.
App for photo effects – Photorim, FREE

After you’ve taken a photo, or had photos synced to your phone, you may well want to edit them.
Your 808 PureView actually has pretty nifty photo editing software already. When you are looking at any photo within the gallery, tap the screen and you’ll notice buttons appear along the bottom. Press the bottom right for more options and you’ll get a choice of Edit, Send and Share.
Selecting Edit allows you to crop, rotate, flip, resize, adjust the colour and add effects, clip art or frames around the image.
Photorim takes adding effects to your photos to the extreme and justifiably prides itself on being simple to use.
You view how your photo looks in each visual effect from the thumbnail gallery (and there are dozens to choose from) and you just select the one you like.
Get it right and your finished image will look like a professional graphic artist has painstakingly worked their magic for you.
App for quirky photos: Thermal Camera, FREE

Let’s finish with something completely different. Transform your 808 PureView into a thermal camera with the touch of a button.
It’s a good way of illustrating that just because the 808 PureView is a very serious camera phone, does not mean that it can’t be fun at the same time.
However, if thermal imaging is not your thing, then how about 3D Photo Camera, which is in the Nokia Store for £1.50?
Have you been using any of these apps on your Nokia 808 PureView or another Nokia camera phone? Let us know how you’ve been getting on.

Manage your calls, messaging and data use with Counters

Keeping track of your monthly allowance of data, SMS and phone calls is tough – we’re all far too busy to be counting up those types of things. New Beta Labs app Counters for Nokia Lumia now keeps a track on these things for you.

- Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
- Scan the barcode
- Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
- Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace
When going about your business on your phone it’s important not to go over your allowance. If you do, you’ll end up shelling out more money to the networks next time your bill comes around and nobody wants that to happen (except for the networks, of course).
To stop that from happening you’ll need to let Counters know how many minutes in calls you’re allowed to make, how many text messages you can send and how many MB or GB you’re allowed to use when browsing the Web when not connected to WiFi.
Every time you make a call, send an SMS or use part of your data allowance Counters will minus that from the total, showing what you’ve got left to use.
The usage screen is designed to show you how you much you’re using at a glance using a bar graph-style. The tiles deplete from full to empty depending on how much you’ve used.
For a full breakdown of what you’ve used, you’ll find everything you’ll need to know within the usages tiles. This includes outgoing and incoming data and a list of people you’ve contacted the most.

Counters is a beta app from the Nokia Beta Labs and as such is not entirely finished. All the feedback gathered and given back to the Nokia Beta Labs team will go to make improvements for possible future iterations, so make sure you head over to the Counters page on Nokia Beta Labs to leave them your feedback.

Getting podcasts on your Nokia Lumia

Until you’ve actually done it, it might not be entirely obvious that your Nokia Lumia has a fully-functional, built-in podcast player that does a great job of playing episodes, keeping your podcasts up-to-date and also getting rid of content that’s out-of-date.
You’ll find your podcasts under the ‘Music + Videos’ tile. But of course, you’ll have to subscribe to some before you can join the fun.
Podcasts using Zune
The key to using it on a Windows PC is Microsoft Zune. You may already have set up Zune to synchronise a playlist of your favourite tunes. What you may not have realised is that you set up podcasts separately from regular playlists.

When you go to the podcast section in Zune, you can see what you’re already subscribed to, and also add a new subscription. To do, this you will need the feed address of the podcast, also described as its RSS. Click ‘add a new podcast’ at the bottom of the screen and enter the address in the box that appears.

For each podcast, you can determine how many episodes you want to keep in your collection. For a daily news bulletin, there’s not much point keeping more than one or two episodes. However, for ‘feature content’ such as Melvyn Bragg’s In our time, you may want to keep everything until you have the luxury of a long train journey in order to catch up.
More than PC-based
Got a Mac rather than a PC? The same function can also be performed using the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. Here you can set your device to synchronise whatever podcasts you subscribe to in iTunes, or just a selection, and once again choose how many or only to transfer unlistened items in your library.

No Windows PC or Mac, or don’t want to have to synchronise regularly?
You’ll need an app, then. A good start here would be SimpliRSS, a free app that can download and play podcasts directly on your Lumia phone. All you’ll need is the address of the RSS feed for the podcast.
If you’re prepared to invest a small amount of money into getting a dedicated podcast app, then BringCast will fit the bill, offering an audio-dedicated interface and a directory of popular content to get you started.
Lastly, for a more limited, but extremely easy-to-use and attractive podcast player, we recommend the BBC Podcast Lounge app. Obviously, you only get the BBC’s audio output, but with more than 350 varied and professionally produced programmes to choose from, that’s not so limited at all.

If you’re going down the apps route, then be safe rather than sorry. Make sure you aren’t burning up your 3G data allowance with podcast downloads – only download content when you’re on WiFi.
Any recommendations for podcasts that Conversations readers should subscribe to?

Nokia at the ESPYs – Grab amazing Dave Kinsey artwork
ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports broadcasting, hosted ESPY awards a few weeks ago. The ESPYs is ESPNs annual award show that celebrates the achievements and accolades of athletes from all areas of sport. Nokia was at the ESPYs, hosting parties and athletes and showing off the Nokia Lumia 900.
As a part of the festivities, Nokia teamed up with artist Dave Kinsey to create custom artwork for the athletes. The good news for all of us is that we get to share in the awesomeness of his amazing artwork as Nokia has made the artwork available to download.
For those unfamiliar with him, Dave Kinsey is a world-renowned graphical artist whose work you’ve seen on many logos and album art covers.
As a part of the Nokia Pre-Party which was attended by athletes, influencers and celebrities, Dave Kinsey created more than 80 pieces of art which were available as wallpapers for the Nokia Lumia 900.
Athletes such as Donald Driver, Evan Longoria and Mike Miller received Lumia 900s with custom artwork for their phones.
If you’re looking for a sports-inspired background for your Nokia phone, be sure to grab the ZIP file of all the images – there are 11 in total.
Each piece was created by Dave Kinsey and will look stunning on your phone or computer.
Which piece of artwork is your favorite?
