Nokia Suite 3.5 Beta for Windows adds N9 support

Nokia Suite 3.5 beta for Windows

Nokia Suite has been the reliable interface between your Symbian smartphone and your PC for many years. Over at Nokia Beta Labs, the team have released a new version that now brings support to your Nokia N9.

Nokia Suite 3.5 Beta for Windows is a useful tool that is used to perform a variety of tasks, including:

  • Backing up your contacts to the PC
  • Saving your text messages
  • Transferring multimedia items, such as music, photos and video, to and from the PC
  • Downloading of important software updates to your phone, including app updates.

Synced

As well as these main features, with Nokia Suite you’re able to download map data for Nokia Maps on your device. This is perfect if you’re planning a getaway and don’t want to get lost while you’re there. Plug in your Nokia Belle or Nokia N9 smartphone and side load all the map data you need onto your phone.

There’s also the ability to send text messages right from your PC by hitting the SMS icon at the top of the screen. Imagine, you’re at work and you’ve plugged your Nokia Belle or Nokia N9 into your PC to charge and sync and a text comes in. You can read that text and reply to it using the computer, saving you time and the need of picking up your phone and using it.

Sending SMS

You can browse the Nokia Store through Nokia Suite and install apps or games to your phone. However, this isn’t currently available for the Nokia N9.

Plus, any music you’ve got stored on your PC or phone can be played right from Nokia Suite with even the option to download or purchase more directly from Nokia Music Store.

As this update is from Nokia Beta Labs, it’s not a final commercial version so expect some minor bugs. The team over at the labs are very keen to hear from you with any feedback you may have to improve the service, so make sure you head to their site and give feedback.

Are you using Nokia Suite 3.5 Beta for Windows? What do you think of it? Let us know, in the comments section below.

Get to grips with Contact Share on your Nokia Lumia

Nokia Lumia 800

Storing people’s phone numbers, addresses and email details in our mobiles is something we now all take for granted, but sharing or adding new contacts can still be a convoluted process.

Nokia’s Contact Share app, which is now available worldwide for your Nokia Lumia, makes the task of sharing and receiving contacts incredibly quick, straightforward and simple.

Contact Share is not just more convenient but it also eliminates human error. For example, there is always the risk of inputting the wrong number into your phone or losing the all-important business card.

Sharing a contact

Upon opening Contact Share, the first screen you will see is a list of all the contacts stored on your phone.

Select the contact you wish to share and the next screen will give you a choice of which of their details that you wish to pass on. Perhaps you might want to share their phone number and work email, but not their home address.

Contact Share

Confirm your choices by pressing the ‘Tick’ at the bottom of the screen and then you are given the choice of sharing those details either by Email or SMS. Make your choice and then type either the number or email address that you are sending it to.

Of course, if you are sharing the contact with someone else that is already in your People hub then you can just select them by pressing + in the ‘To’ field.

They will then receive a vCard file (or electronic business card) that they can then easily store on their own phone.

Receiving a contact

Receiving a contact via Contact Share is even easier than sending one.

Imagine the scenario, where I need call my mum to ask for the phone number of a distant relative. Then I would have to write the number down on a piece of paper while my mum read it out loud, a few digits at a time, over a crackly phone line. I’m sure we’ve all had those conversations and they are never as easy as they should be!

Contact Share

Now, I’ll just ask my mum to send it to me via Contact Share.

Then I only need to open Contact Share and swipe across to ‘Received’ screen, tap on the contact that has just been sent to me and save it on my phone. The contact will then be in my People hub.

Looking after your contacts in a mobile phone is similar to maintaining the engine in your car. You don’t always notice it, but it makes your life easier in the long run if you keep it in good condition.

Consider Contact Share a great app for keeping your phone in great shape.

Contact Share will be available to download in the Nokia Collection, alternatively get it directly from this link (only works from your Lumia).

Offscreen reaches 100 million downloads

Hello

If you’ve carried around a Nokia phone over the last few years, the chances are that an app or game from Offscreen Technologies has been part of your toolkit.

Well known for their polished and sublimely useful apps such as Grid Touch and Converter Touch, Offscreen are the latest developer to reach the milestone of 100 million downloads from the Nokia Store.

We caught up with Offscreen’s CEO, Harri Myllynen, to find out how they did it.

First of all, who is Offscreen?

Harri MyllynenOffscreen is based in Helsinki, Finland, and was founded by the core team in 2005, when we saw great opportunities in developing software for the early Nokia smartphones at the time.

We’re still a pretty small company, employing 20 people, most of whom are programmers.

While we make money from our apps, our main line of business has been developing bespoke apps for clients.  Our success in Nokia store has proven to be a great way to promote our company and market our skills to potential clients.

We’ve noticed that Offscreen apps have a very distinctive look. What are the ingredients of this?

We believe in simplicity, polish and common non-textual widgets.

By simplicity, I mean reducing the number of menus and screens to an absolute minimum, preferably to just one. Polish comes out through professional design and putting real life materials and elements into our apps. Non-textual widgets in turn are common symbols used for similar tasks (info, close box etc.) which minimize the need for localization.

So which of your apps have been the biggest hits in the Nokia Store?

converterIn terms of downloads the most successful apps have been the simplest – in our opinion, what comes to app design, less is absolutely more!

Just think “Bright Lite” torch app which is basically a realistic light switch turning the camera led on and off, or “Candle Touch” which is a candle simulation with simple and realistic interaction.

Basically, the easier it is to understand an app, the more likely it is to be downloaded.

Candle TouchAnd what would you say were the golden rules for up-and-coming developers?

To be successful in the apps space, you should always aim to be the first with a given concept in any ecosystem.

Novelty, in turn, gets noticed by the bloggers who spread the word and drive downloads – much more efficiently than any paid marketing would do.

You’re well-known for your Symbian apps, but you’re also moving into both Series 40 and Windows Phone territory. How have you found that transition?

It’s been relatively easy. Perhaps because we do full canvas touch apps with our custom widgets only.

Different screen resolutions sometimes call for changes in the layout, but usually we just rescale graphics for the new platform.

And because of our Origo cross compiling tools we have been able to port apps between platforms in a factory setting, by which I mean deploying several apps simultaneously.

Thank you, Harri, for your time and congratulations on a great achievement!

Nokia Trailers is your ticket to big-screen bliss

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, Total Recall and The Bourne Legacy. All are, or set to be, great 2012 films. But how do you know they will be any good before you purchase that ticket? Watch the trailer first using Nokia Trailers on your Nokia Lumia.

Download Nokia Trailers nowNokia Trailers QR code

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the barcode
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

To be honest, I didn’t really want to see Total Recall until I watched the trailer. I didn’t think anybody could make a better version than the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger version. However, the trailer has impressed me and I’ll be buying a ticket when it comes out. I’m sure most of you feel the same way; it’s the trailer that sells a movie. With Nokia Trailers you can either stream them for instant viewing or download them for watching later.

While fast-paced, action-packed cutscenes are important in grabbing people’s attention and therefore their money, Nokia Trailers offers more.

The Trailer is no good without a synopsis to put what you’re seeing into context. There’s extra information about the movie like who’s starring in it, who directed it and how other people are rating the movie. Votes can either make or break a movie. You’ll probably not watch a movie if it’s only received a thumbs up from 25 per cent of people. If you like a movie, or can’t wait to watch it, the voting system is there for you to make your mark.

Nokia Trailers featured Nokia Trailers movie details

Nokia Trailers isn’t just about the new movies coming out; it’s about making sure you don’t miss them. You can add films to your watchlist and have your phone remind you when the movie is about to premiere. Be the first amongst your friends to watch the latest movie.

If you want to be kept up to date with news of the latest movies, Nokia Trailers can notify you on any new trailers when they’re announced.

As with any movie, it’s better to share the experience with friends. Within any movie section of the app, you have the option to share the trailer with your friends via SMS, email or by using the Windows Phone Social plugin. This means you can share the trailer with anybody via Windows Live, LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter. They’ll then receive a link showing the trailer being played on a Nokia Lumia. It’s up to you then to coordinate your friends and get them to the cinema on time.

Nokia Lumia apps to keep your kids busy

Skipping

The school holidays were always my favourite time of year when I was growing up but for my parents it was probably a different matter.

After all, keeping a young child occupied for the best part of a month is no easy task. It can also be an expensive time, especially if you are looking after more than one child. Going to theme parks was not cheap, even in the 1980s!

Thankfully, the world has moved on considerably since I was young, and there are now more things to keep young people occupied in addition to marbles and spinning tops.

Fresh air and outdoor activities is an important part of the mix, but your Nokia Lumia smartphone can also play a helping hand.

Here are 10 free apps that can keep your kids busy and some of them could even be called educational – bonus!

Origami Pro, FREE

Origami Pro

Practical things to do are always a winner. This app provides easy instructions in the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.

There are a whole host of models that you can choose to make and then swipe through each screen for a diagram and step-by-step instructions.

The origami models include a bird, a hat, sail boats and a frog, which looks particularly challenging.

Simon Cow, FREE

Simon Cow

This is a highly amusing and devilishly addictive version of the classic Simon Says memory game.

Like the original, the idea is to repeat the exact sequence of sounds from the different animals on the screen. What starts off really easy, soon becomes a stern test of your memory.

Simon Cow replaces the computer sound effects with farmyard animals. The game can be customised so that you can have more than 4 animals, and if you really want to test yourself, their heads can rotate on the screen.

A leader board keeps the highest score for whoever can remember the longest sequence.

National Flags Quiz, FREE

National Flags Quiz

Older children, and perhaps even adults, should enjoy this quiz, which tests their knowledge of over 200 national flags.

There is a practice mode for learning the national flags – get the answer wrong and the game will tell you the correct answer.

When you are feeling confident enough, there is also a timed mode that tests you on either 50 random flags or, if you prefer, 50 from a specific continent. Do well and submit your score to an online scoreboard.

Pixelator & Draw Free!, both FREE

Here are a couple of apps for children who enjoy creating art.

Pixelator

Pixelator lets you colour in one pixel at a time. It might take a little effort, but the reward can be a fun and unique looking piece of art.

The pixel art can be saved on your phone, uploaded to image sharing site imgur and also set as your Lumia’s lock screen.

Draw

Draw is a more conventional finger drawing app for your Lumia. You can start from scratch or you can draw over and add effects to an existing photo.

There are also lots of features just for kids, such as colouring in, stamping for adding colourful graphics, noise effects and warping and twisting images.

This free app has adverts, the ad-free version costs £0.79p and also supports more languages.

Hangman, FREE

Hangman

If the idea of a word game on played on a piece of paper isn’t immediately appealing to today’s generation of children, then how about showing them the same game on your Nokia Lumia?

This version comes in three themes and many different word categories to play from.

Breakout, FREE

Breakout

Sometimes nothing will do but some a little arcade action, and Breakout is such a game for all ages.

Block the ball as it falls down the screen and use it to smash the bricks as it rebounds back up. Simple and addictive.

This free app has a host of great features, such as 150 levels, different weapons and power-ups, online scoreboards and you can even create your own game screens.

4 In A Row, FREE

4 In A Row

Also known as Connect 4, this is a classic game of strategy and trying to outthink your opponent.

This app is a game for both two players, or one person can play against the phone. Trying not to lose all the coloured discs was a bit of a nightmare, so this game is ideal on your Lumia.

NumberTap, FREE

NumberTap

Great apps can make learning fun – even maths!

NumberTap is a competitive maths game where you your arithmetic against other players around the world for the highest scores.

The sums come thick and fast, starting easy and quickly becoming a lot, lot harder. Keeping calm under pressure is also vital as there is a ticking clock.

Sketch Match, FREE

Sketch Match

Sketch Match is not quite a drawing app and not quite a gaming app, but it contains elements of both.

The idea is that you are shown an image, which you need to sketch as well as possible within the allocated time. The better your artistic efforts, the higher your rating.

Another fun way of playing this app is the ‘search by sketch’ feature. Sketch an object and hit the search button to see photos of similar items. That is, of course, if you sketched it well in the first place!

Which apps do you like that could keep kids busy on their holidays?
