5 ways games will change in the next 5 years

In 2007, mobile games that were getting us dizzy with excitement included Resident Evil: The Missions, The Fast and the Furious Fugitive and Pyramid Bloxx. Limited by specs, they now look decidedly retro, so what can we expect five years in the future?  We spoke to Aki Jarvinen, Creative Director at Digital Chocolate and one of the world’s only Professors of Gaming to find out.

1. Gameplay will matter even more

By now, audiovisual fidelity in games’ graphics has reached a point where audiences will find it increasingly difficult to perceive the next step, as advances are, arguably, becoming incremental. Thus, more original takes on visual styles will gain ground from photorealistic, immersive recreations of actual events, people, and places.

More comprehensive evolution in the visceral nature of video game will eventually follow, but for the next 5 years they will still remain in the R&D departments of entertainment electronics manufactures.

2. Games will become free services

Ease of discovery and paying a quick buck for convenience are already ruling players’ hearts, just think of the application marketplaces out there. Increasingly, various types of games will adopt the ‘free to play’ model, where money is not spent in individual purchases of the game, but rather, the game is distributed for free. This creates a basis for revenue from a percentage of players who stay and pay.

Another concurrent development is games becoming services, something that keeps on evolving throughout their lifecycle. The service aspect reinforces taking game brands across platforms: the hit game you begin to play in your browser can also be accessed via your phone – as part of a platform-agnostic game service.

2.Video game consoles will adapt and evolve

The buzz is that those boxes we have come to know and love as play stations, xboxes, nintendos, etc. will wither in the hands of mobile platforms, new price points, in-app purchases, and digital distribution in general.

‘Consoles will die’ has been a popular provocation lately, but in 5 years the role of a dedicated gaming machine will not go away. – consoles will not die, but adapt and evolve. But where into – to televisions as a set of their applications?

4. Game design will break out of games

Already now, all around us, media producers are trying to engage us and make us stick to their products. Here learnings from game design will play a bigger part – badges and points as rewards for your activity with a product or a service are just a feeble start; more intricate mechanisms from games will seek to permeate your everyday use of the most mundane things.

The next years will truly signal the beginning of the ‘ludic age’: we will find more and more ‘playful’ ways imposed on us when consuming media.

5.Game makers will gain more respect

As a consequence of the above, people will start realizing that game design is a craft that demands talent and attention to detail. Indie Game: The Movie is a recent documentary film that probes the mindset of independent game developers, companies that might consist of one to two guys.

With the huge success of a game like Minecraft, the rise of the indie is definitely upon us, and it is only going to gain momentum. As the documentary shows, these developers use games as their medium of personal expression, trying to put their flaws and insecurities put into a game. This presents and equivalent for games to that of art house cinema, and it is here to stay.

Some fascinating insights, but how do you think we’ll be playing in the near future? Let us know your predictions below.

Nokia City Lens comes out of beta

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Last week we were talking about all the new features of Nokia Maps for the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. Nokia Maps is going to work completely offline, offer voice guided turn-by-turn navigation and venue maps. What is even more revolutionary is that the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 are going to get a GPS or GLONASS fix within seconds even without being assisted by network connection.

Along with that, we have introduced Nokia City Lens last May with a beta programme to collect your precious feedback and your improvement suggestions. Your response has been overwhelmingly positive and we are proud to have officially released our augmented reality app to the Windows Phone Marketplace for Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710. And we also have a specific version for the newest Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 in the works.

What is Nokia City Lens?

Download Nokia City Lens nowCity Lens QR code

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the barcode
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

For those who haven’t tested the beta, Nokia City Lens is Nokia’s location-based augmented reality application. Using the phone’s camera viewfinder, Nokia City Lens provides an augmented reality overlay view of buildings and instantly highlights places of interest.

It basically turns sight into the next interface for searching the world around you. The app then provides information about each building or landmark in the area giving the user an at-a-glance understanding of what restaurants, museums, shops and others places of interest are nearby. Seeing a place of interest through augmented reality provides a wealth of information not available with the naked eye, allowing you to see the world around you using your smartphone instead of having to perform web searches.

You can download Nokia City Lens now for your Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 now, following the instructions above.

Nokia City Lens on Windows Phone 7.5

More features in the Windows Phone 8 version

We are not only developing Nokia City Lens for Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710, but we are also going to release the app for the new Windows Phone 8 smartphones Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, introduced last week. The new mobile operating system, powered by the Nokia Location Platform, is allowing us to introduce some very cool new features.

Nokia City Lens on Windows Phone 8

The first to be introduced will be a new 3D icons layout, which is going to make the augmented reality experience look even more realistic. We are also going to fix a common problem of augmented reality apps. If you don’t see a place in real life, because it’s hidden behind a building, you might want to see it or not among nearby search results. We give you the choice: you will be able to filter search results so that only those in the line of sights are visible.

The upcoming version of Nokia City Lens for Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 is also going to make more use of Windows Phone unique features. For instance you will be able to pin to start any category tile, to find faster what you are looking for, anywhere you are. You can also customize the Nokia City Lens menu by adding your own favorite searches. Last but not least you can also use Nokia City Lens in both landscape and portrait mode.

Make Me Smile Monday #35

Another dose of awesomeness from the world wide web, featuring (spoiler alert) Nokia Lumia 900 food blogging, some Star Wars silliness and some amazing art.

Pie always makes me smile, any day of the week

First up, how could I ignore this pic of pie. Not just any photo of pie, either, as this was snapped on a Nokia Lumia 900 by kennytechs and is part of his foodblogging experiment (actually just a chance to test out the Camera Extras on his Lumia 900). Pie makes me smile any day of week, so why not include a sweet photo here?

*****

Next to make you smile (if only at his dedication), an awesome time lapse video of a drawing of downtown Manhattan, New York (especially apt given this was the location for last weeks’ Nokia Lumia announcement). The detail here is staggering, time-consuming and quite frankly something I would not have had the patience to even contemplate undertaking, let alone complete.

For an extra bonus art story this week, I give you portraits made from the keys of discarded keyboards. The Tarantino is particularly fine and made me smile almost as much as Quentin is scowling:

Keyboard art Tarantino portrait

*****

You were promised Star Wars silliness, and it would be rude of me to disappoint, so here we are. I seem to remember writing something similar a while back about stormtrooper cake, but this is one step up. Life-sized Darth Vader cake, anyone?

Life-size Vader cake

If cake isn’t your thing or you’d prefer something a little chillier, try lightsaber ice pops that are illuminated from the inside. Oh yes, *that* made me smile!

*****

Quick Grins

Accurate descriptions of department store items. I don’t recommend trying this, I don’t know how he managed it.

Super slow motion water balloons.

Real life Roller Coaster Tycoon. That would be pretty awesome.

*****

It’s Monday, what gets you through the day? Let me know in the comments, or dropping a line on Twitter using the #MakeMeSmileMonday tag, and it could be appearing in MMSM #36.

Next to make you smile (if only at his dedication), an awesome time lapse video of a drawing of downtown Manhattan, New York (especially apt given this was the location for last weeks’ Nokia Lumia announcement). The detail here is staggering, time-consuming and quite frankly something I would not have had the patience to even contemplate undertaking, let alone complete.

For an extra bonus art story this week, I give you portraits made from the keys of discarded keyboards. The Tarantino is particularly fine and made me smile almost as much as Quentin is scowling:

It’s Monday, what gets you through the day? Let me know in the comments, or dropping a line on Twitter using the #MakeMeSmileMonday tag, and it could be appearing in MMSM #36.
