Nokia Maps vs Apple Maps

In the black corner we have the iPhone 5 armed with Apple maps. And in the Cyan corner (oh yeah) we have the Nokia Lumia 900, of course sporting its muscle in the form of Nokia Maps!

Now, both applications have been put head-to-head by the man himself, Nirave on UK mobile review.

Me, myself, personally, I’m not going to sit here and chirp on about this detailed, blow by blow encounter, I’m just going to say one thing; read the post.

Rockin’ in the free world with Nokia Music

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Imagine an application that brings access to a vast global catalogue of 17 million songs, available to listen to online and offline, and ad free without ever having to sign up or pay a monthly fee? That application is here.

It’s Nokia Music, which launched exclusively for Nokia Lumia in the United States a couple of weeks ago, and will feature prominently on the forthcoming Windows Phone 8 devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 smartphones.

Download the Nokia Music app

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the QR code
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

While eager Windows Phone 8 fanciers will have to wait a little while longer to access the app, owners of the existing Lumia devices can download the free app today by using the QR code to the right.

Once you open the app from the Nokia Lumia 900, 800 or 710 you’ll notice that you’re not asked to sign up for an account. The listening can begin immediately, without handing over personal information or credit card details.

You’ll see from the Nokia Music homescreen a series of menu options. One is My Music, which takes you to the tunes you have stored locally on your phone or the files that you have purchased or added to the device from your computer. Any music you purchase using this app will end up here too.

Mixing it up

Selecting Mix Radio instantly opens up a world of pre-curated playlists from a large array of genres. You can select from Top Charts like The Billboard Top 100, Decade Mixes and much, much more. There’s even playlists from artists like Green Day, Rihanna and Lana Del Rey, with more playlists by new artists being added all the time.

There are many music streaming services that offer offline playlists for those times when connectivity or monthly data allowances are at a premium. However, most of them charge a pretty penny each month for the privilege of going off the grid.

Mix Radio allows for playlists to be made available offline free of charge or subscription. All you have to do is ‘long press’ on a playlist and select ‘Make available offline’. As the playlists are constantly evolving as the weeks go on, simply refresh them to ensure they’re perfectly up to date. You can download up to 14 hours to listen to offline at any one time. All playlists, online or offline, can be pinned easily to the Windows Phone Start Screen.

Nokia Music

Creating A Mix

If you’re a picky playlist curator like myself, then you may want to rock a custom playlist. You can do this by selecting ‘Create A Mix’ from within the Mix Radio section.

Contrary to rival services, here you can add up to THREE artists from which to form the Custom Radio station, which beautifully narrows down the list to ensure you get just what you want.

If you create a playlist using Green Day, The Offspring and New Found Glory, you’re sure to get an almighty selection of the world’s finest pop-punk.

All of the Custom Radio stations you create can be shared to social networks or via email.

Getting Personal

Another neat feature of Mix Radio is the ability to create a personal music profile, which divides you up into neat percentages based on the genres of music you most enjoy.

Select the Personalize section of Mix Radio to examine your listening history or even scan your music library in order to create the profile (for example 27 per cent Rock, 33 per cent pop, 20 per cent soul and 20 per cent R&B) and then you can easily create a Custom Station based on your profile.

Forever yours

Beyond the Mix Radio magic, there’s also a built-in music store, allowing you to permanently own a digital copy of each of the 17 million songs you may hear while listening to playlists.

Going to the show

Nokia Music is, naturally, fully integrated with Nokia Maps, allowing you to search for concerts near to you through the Gigs Finder section on the main menu. Hitting this option will identify shows going on within your vicinity. If your choice isn’t listed, simply choose the search option.

Clicking on a show will allow you to buy tickets directly from within the app, from a range of online outlets. You can even get directions to the venue using Nokia Maps.

Make Me Smile Monday #37

Another Monday, another beginning to another week, another chance to get off to a good start with a look at what’s been making me smile since last Monday.

Bacteria Portraits

So…yeah. You want to show how cool science can be, and how you can control bacteria to make them do what you want. So you use the poor little unsuspecting E. Coli to make portraits of scientists. Science meets art meets science. Nice. Made me smile in a kind of ‘wow, this is pointl totally cool’ way.

*****

Mash-ups are a staple of Make Me Smile Monday, so imagine my glee (absolutely no reference to the high school musical TV show) when I spotted this: Carly Rae Jepsen  (good Canadian girl) with Gangnam Style

‘Op…op-op!’ – this made me smile…just before I decided it didn’t. Fair play to the guy xareoseven who made the mix. Two of the most viral music videos of the last 12 months mixed, mashed and mauled for your aural pleasure. Or not, you decide.

*****

When I’m not writing for Nokia Conversations, I’d like to be able to do this:

I don’t, but I wish I could. Geoff Mackley is a little bit crazy. That is one awesome video that must have taken some guts to film/participate in. It’s going on my bucket list, but I think the closest I’ll get to a volcano is driving past Mt. St. Helens on my way to a soccer game.

*****

If you have *ever* in your life touched a single brick of Lego, watch this:

If you have ever read a MMSM before you’ll know how much this made me smile. If you haven’t, check out the back catalogue.

*****

Quick Grins

Home theatre that looks like a car crashed into your living room.

GPS-enabled shoes that get you home however drunk lost you are.

Sound waves that make liquid levitate.

*****

Have you seen anything this week that made you smile? That would make me smile? Send me a link in the comments below, or ping me on Twitter using the #MakeMeSmileMonday tag.

Cool Britannia! The 5 most iconic British bands to rock America

It can be tough to make it big in America. The history of British music shows just how tough. Mod icons like The Small Faces to Britpop heroes Suede, Blur and Oasis, hugely popular in Europe, failed to find fame across the Atlantic. But it’s not all disappointed record sales and dented egos. Just as Nokia Music looks set to make a big splash in the US, there are British bands that not only hit the big time, but changed American music tastes forever.

1. The Beatles

Officially the band that started the British musical invasion of the U.S. in the 1960s, The Beatles had America in hysterics after their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th of February, 1964. Perhaps their happy-go-lucky love songs were an escape from Cold War anxieties and the depressive mood after the Kennedy murder, but ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ topped the US charts for seven weeks.

On the 4th of April in the same year, The Beatles had taken over the entire top 5. The group has racked up 177 million in album sales, more than anyone else ever. The sales of Beatles-themed lunchboxes, napkins, wigs and colouring books might well be even higher.

2. The Rolling Stones

The longest running rock band in history, The Rolling Stones arrived on the American scene right on the heels of The Beatles. An exact opposite of the latter’s clean-cut image, The Stones were edgy, rough and unkempt. When they started their first US tour,
a news headline read, “Would You Let Your Daughter Marry a Rolling Stone?”

Their unique musical style, which mixed rhythm and blues with rock and roll, produced them eight number one hits on the US charts, including “Paint It, Black” and “Satisfaction”. In 2008, The Rolling Stones were ranked as the second most successful group in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

3. The Who

Another frontrunner of the British Invasion in the 1960s, The Who first reached the US Top 10 in 1967 with “I Can See for Miles”. Their concept album “Tommy” (out in 1969 and the first in a series of seven top ten albums in the US), which tells the story of a deaf, dumb and blind boy, is considered the first ever rock opera.

Dubbed the Godfathers of Punk, the band has also influenced the music world with their high energy performances that frequently involved destroying instruments on stage.

4. Led Zeppelin

The British forefathers of heavy metal made The Who’s guitar smashing seem lame. In true rock god style, they’d take apart entire hotel floors… John Bonham even rode a motorbike through the lobby of Chateau Marmont in L.A. Their hard rock tunes, rooted in blues and the mysticism of folk, however, have inspired countless bands from KISS and Black Sabbath to Nirvana, The White Stripes and Coldplay.

Their first album (in 1969) stayed on America’s charts for a jaw-dropping 73 weeks, while Stairway to Heaven, their most iconic track, is still the most requested song ever on FM radio.

5. Pink Floyd

The most commercially successful progressive rock band in the world, Pink Floyd not just produced amazing psychedelic music but also set the standard for today’s elaborate gigs. As well as huge cinema screens, their live shows have featured a giant exploding pig and a 12-metre high wall made of cardboard bricks.

One of the best-selling albums ever in the world, The Dark Side of the Moon is also the 20th-best-selling album in the United States. Though it held the number one spot on The Billboard 200 for just one week, it has spent a record total of 814 consecutive weeks on that list.

These bands all showed that if you’re innovative, inspiring and downright experimental, you don’t have to be American to rock America. But are their iconic tunes good enough to make your ultimate Cool Britannia playlist? If not, we’d love to hear which Brit bands rock your world.
