Poll: Your favourite Nokia Lumia 820 shells

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

The phrase ‘a perfect marriage between form and function’ might very well have been coined with the Nokia Lumia 820 exchangeable shells in mind.

Form: They look fantastic and barely betray any hint of their changeable nature. In fact, the Lumia 820 both looks and feels like it has been painstakingly crafted out of a single block of premium material.

The shells also come in several striking colours with either a gloss or matt finish. However, as Tuomas Reivo, Lead Designer on the Nokia Lumia 820, told Conversations a few weeks ago:

“We’ve moved beyond just changing the colour of your phone. People can now decide how they want to use their phone, by doing something as simple as changing a shell to add a function.”

Function: How about shells that allow you to recharge your Lumia 820 wirelessly? Or the rugged shell that offers greater protection from the wear and tear of every day use?

Personalisation

With the different colours and different sorts of shells available, it might be quite tricky deciding which one you prefer. Of course, you can always buy more than one!

To recap here are the options:

Standard changeable shells, one of which you will receive when you buy a Lumia 820 are currently available in high gloss:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Cyan
  • Purple
  • White

Matt versions are available in black and grey.

Using a wireless charging shell means that you can simply place your Lumia 820 on the Nokia Wireless Charging Plate or an accessory such as the JBL PowerUp Speaker to charge up your phone.

These wireless charging shells, all with matt finishes, are available in the following colours:

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Black
  • Red
  • Cyan

Finally, we have the rugged shells for extra protection. While you might be thinking that shells designed for extra protection are normally pretty chunky and ugly, these are the same width and same length as the other shells, and only a fraction thicker.

As well as covering the back, they slightly stretch over the front of the Lumia 820 to protect the screen and the four corners.

They are available in matt yellow, green and orange with a black protective TPU trim.

The Poll

We thought it would be fun to find out which of these shells you prefer. This isn’t scientific and it’s not meant to be taken seriously, but everyone enjoys a quick poll, right?

We’ve devised a couple of questions.

Which type of shell best suits your needs?

Out of all the different colours (either gloss or matt) available across the range, which one do you prefer?

In your comments below, you can also tell us which of the shells you prefer and why.

Top Nokia Lumia 820 unboxings and reviews

The fabulous Nokia Lumia 820 has received a lot of attention from gadget and tech enthusiasts across the globe, and here are the best reviews over the past week. Sit back and enjoy!

Highlighting the ‘crisp’ video-capturing facilities and the ‘super responsive’ phone software such as Nokia Maps, reviewer Funnynoteable also found the loudspeaker to be pretty useful ‘once you get the music going’.

Watch this video on YouTube.

Alastair Stevenson’s indepth V3 critique of the device pointed to the Lumia 820′s solid build which feels very ‘comfortable’ in your hands, as well as producing ‘vibrant’ images from the 8 mega-pixel camera.

Nokia Lumia 820

As I know you all love a bit of nostalgia, here is one of the first reviews of the excellent Lumia 820, from CNET at the phone’s New York launch last month. Notably, Brian Bennett takes us through the devices ‘funky’ look and the NFC wireless capabilities.

Watch this video on YouTube.

That’s the round up. Has that inspired you to get your hands on a Lumia 820? Share your thoughts here (or on Twitter).

Customising the dialler on your Nokia Lumia

Phone

With all the fancy things you can do with your Nokia Lumia, it’s easy to forget the handset’s core function: making phone calls.

You might be thinking that there’s not much more to using the phone than launching the Lumia’s dialler or going through your contacts to call someone up.

In fact, there are apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace that can jazz up how you can make those phone calls and to change the look of your dialler altogether.

At this point you might very well be thinking, how could you possibly improve on a simple numerical keypad? Well, give these apps a try and you can see for yourself!

Phone Dialler (free)

Phone Dialler

If you have lots and lots of contacts then this app should make finding and calling them a little simpler and faster.

Using the T9 predictive text system that we all know and love, you just start by typing someone’s name and then their details magically appear in the list below.

What’s really clever is that contacts will be sorted by both their names and their phone numbers. For example if you type 2 and 5, then you will see everyone whose name begins with AL, as well as everyone whose number feature 2,5 in the sequence. It might seem odd at first, but it becomes intuitive very quickly.

Rotary Dialer (free or £0.79p)

Rotary Dialer

If you are feeling a little nostalgic for the old rotary phones, then this app will transport you straight back down memory lane.

I’m not even going to pretend that using a rotary dialler is more efficient or quicker than the modern keypads but it’s all in the name of fun, isn’t it? It might not be practical but it will make you the hipper than all your friends.

The sound effects are charming and there’s also that satisfying little ‘click’ feedback when you dial each number. You can also change the sound effects, turn them off and also change themes.

Metro Dialer (free or £0.79p)

Metro Dialer

This app gives you a choice of both the classic rotary dial and the modern keypad; although in a cheeky move the modern keypad is only unlocked after you’ve submitted a review. To be fair, it only took several seconds to do this.

It’s worth the effort though because both the diallers are very clean and sleek that sit very nicely with Windows Phone tiles. There is also a choice of sound effects for you to choose from.

If you are wondering how to change the colour theme for the diallers, then you have to go to your Lumia settings because the app will automatically use the colour theme you’ve chosen for your phone.

RapDialer (free or £2.29)

RapDialer

The free version of RapDialer enjoys extremely high ratings in the Marketplace, and after using it for a short while it’s easy to see why.

It’s perhaps the first app here that could make a genuine case for replacing the native Windows Phone dialler. It’s packed full of features such as groups, speed dial, swipe gestures and is highly customisable.

My favourite feature is that once you’ve brought up your contact using the super-responsive T9 predictive text, you can send them a SMS just by swiping across their name.

RapDialer works really, really well and you will be rewarded by the effort spent getting used to it.

Gesture Speed Dialer (£0.79p)

Gesture Speed Dialer

If actually using numbers to call a contact seems terribly old-fashioned, then you might be a little more impressed with this app.

You can assign a gesture to call a contact, text, email them or even open a web page. It’s very easy to set up and works wonderfully.

If you are worried about having to remember all sorts of different gestures (and what they each do) then fear not, the app keeps a list for your easy reference.

Do you think these dialler apps are useful, or do you have a favourite one? Let us know in the comments below.

HTML5 and Nokia.com: one size fits all

The Internet has changed our lives, and the technology behind it is constantly evolving. At its heart, the Internet uses HTML coding to display web pages, and more and more companies are starting to take advantage of the fifth and latest iteration – HTML5. With a number of exciting HTML5-based projects already under its belt, Nokia is leading the way with the use of HTML5 at Nokia.com and also its online maps.

The introduction of HTML5 is exciting for lots of different reasons, and it has the genuine ability to transform the way we interact with the Internet at home and on the move. It’s better at handling multimedia and graphical content without the need to rely on plugins and APIs, and the technology has been developed with low-powered devices like smartphones and tablets firmly in mind.

Blurring the lines

One of the best bits about the new technology is the fact it enables a standardised experience across a range of different platforms: laptops and PCs, smartphones, tablets, Smart TVs – with an HTML5 site you’ll be able to browse the same content and get a near identical experience whatever you’re using.

This is particularly handy when you’re switching between devices, explains Tuomas Manninen, head of Nokia’s online experience. “It’s a great example of connected devices blurring the border.

If you’re browsing something with your laptop or your computer and you need to leave, you can continue that journey with different devices. “With HTML5 we’re able to make one version that works with everything. Currently we have a desktop site and .mobi site, and the experience between the two is very different,” adds Tuomas.

Components and flexibility

It’s not just the fact that HTML5 can provide a standardised design that makes it so appealing. The technology also makes it considerably easier to create a more flexible website, where content can be perfectly tailored to the viewer.

Traditional websites are built up on templates, which prove restrictive when it comes to content. HTML5 is a lot more accommodating, with a web page made up of different components. This makes it easier to add video, social media, regular articles or any other type of content.

The fact the site can be rolled out across multiple devices, on multiple browsers, and provide the same user experience is a huge benefit.

The new Nokia.com

Nokia’s brand new website – Nokia.com – is one of the most exciting examples on the use of HTML5 to date. It looks great, and Tuomas points out: “We are probably the first to launch a responsive site of this scale .”

It’s a site that Nokia is quite rightly proud of, and Tim McDonald, the Service Design Manager of Nokia.com, explains: “We’ve transformed Nokia.com into a world-class web presence that works seamlessly on all screen sizes, everything from feature phones to desktop computers. The design is all about simplicity, desirability and authenticity.”

“It’s rare for any designer to get a chance to redesign and build a service of this magnitude,” adds Ville Kolehmainen, the Creative Director of Siili Solutions Oyj. “I take great pride being a part of the amazing team behind this first step and I look forward to working on the next.”

The tech behind HERE maps for iOS

Websites themselves are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to HTML5, with a seemingly unlimited number of uses for the tech coming up in the not too distant future. HERE is using HTML5 for its mobile version – all it takes is an HTML5 compatible mobile web browser, and you’ll be able to enjoy Nokia’s class-leading mapping experience irrespective of the device you’re using. HTML5 is also the technology with which the app HERE Maps for iOS has been built.

Thanks to HTML5, it’s easy to access maps for nearly 200 countries, search and benefit from an extensive places directory, get high-quality voice-guided navigation and even use a number of the features offline. In a nutshell, it means you’ll no longer have to put up with inferior bundled mapping apps.

Web Platform Docs

The future for HTML5 also looks exciting, thanks to Web Platform Docs. As a founding steward, Nokia has been instrumental in the creation of Web Platform Docs, which is a community website that provides all the relevant tools for developers without the need to visit multiple sites. Web Platform Docs makes it considerably easier and quicker to develop HTML5 websites, meaning we’ll see a lot more exciting content in the near future.

10 things you might not know about the Nokia Lumia 820

Since it was launched at the start of September the Nokia Lumia 820 has received a ton of coverage. Pocket Lint said, “Visually, and technically, this phone is arguably more interesting than the 920.” While the guys at Phone Arena think it’s “100% Nokia,” talking about “extremely well-made phones that can withstand all kinds of harsh treatment.” After garnering so much attention, you’d think there’s nothing else to learn. Well, we spoke to Pablo Tapia, Global Marketing Manager, and he shared ten things you might still not know about the Nokia Lumia 820.

1. The Nokia Lumia 820 has 2 HAAC microphones, which means you can record loud sounds outdoors, and events like the concert below, without distortion.

2. The Lumia 820 has tons of memory. The SD card expansion supports up to 64 GB, then there’s 8 GB Internal+ 7 GB in SkyDrive. All together, that’s a whopping 79 GB of memory.

3. Tethering on the Nokia Lumia 820 supports up to 8 devices. So, you can share your superfast LTE connection with your friends or your laptop and use Wi-Fi to share your devices.

4. Despite its gorgeous looks the Nokia Lumia 820 is not a unibody device, which means that if you want, you can remove the battery.

5. With Smart shoot, you can use the Nokia Lumia 820 to create the perfect picture of friends and family. Simply take a series of pictures one after the other, then merge the best together to capture everyone at their best.

5. Rather than having a speaker on the back, The Nokia Lumia 820 has a speaker at the bottom. Consequently, when you place the device on a soft surface, you can still hear your conference call and music.

6. The Nokia 820′s Nokia exclusive lens means that you can animate your photos with Cinemagraph.

8. With Nokia Music, you can use the Nokia Lumia 820 to stream all the music you want for free. What’s more, if you connect it to a JBL speaker set, Mix radio will be your DJ all night long.

9. The Nokia Lumia 820 has NFC, which means you can connect to multiple devices, receive or send information, and in some countries pay for things like movie tickets.

10. You can use the Nokia Lumia 820’s camera to translate text.  You just use Bing search, press the eye-icon and point the camera at a foreign text and you get the translation. No more blindly pointing at an incomprehensible menu.

It’s clear that the Nokia Lumia 820 is jam packed with innovative tech, but which of these ten fascinating features most surprised you? Let us know in the comments below.

“This is Lumia” London – secret deadmau5 gig [VIDEO]!

On the 28th November Nokia joined forces with electronic DJ deadmau5 at a secret London location for the ‘This is Lumia’ #Switch light and music spectacular to celebrate the release of the Lumia 920 and 820.

The exclusive street-based party took place one year on from the biggest light show that London has ever seen (when we projected 4D visuals onto the Millbank Tower - again with deadmau5 in tow).

Before I describe to you what happened on the night, I think you should watch the video below (word of advice: change the quality to 1080p).

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Talk about a 360 degree attack on your senses!

What happened?

Nokia Connects turned up at the Nokia UK event knowing very little about what exactly was going on. The whole show was shrouded in secrecy, we knew deadmau5, lights, lasers and music were all in the mix, but that was it.

It was dry (which makes a change for the UK), the air was crisp, the street was packed with Nokia/deadmau5 fans and a full moon illuminated the sky behind the Shard.

It was like being on a film set for a big budget movie; local convenience stores had been taken over for the night by Nokia (spot the bemused neighbour below), 40 policemen and 40 security guards were present and there was a very eerie and mysterious vibe in the air as everyone waited in anticipation.

Then, from nowhere, the iconic deadmau5 helmet appeared from the rooftops and the party kicked off with a bang!

Windows, walls, lamp posts, bins (yes, actual wheelie bins), shops and even old graffiti started to come alive with light, pulsing in time with deadmau5′s tracks . Lasers and speakers engulfed the roofs around us, huge disco balls were driven around the site on trucks and giant NOKIA LUMIA signs were wheeled past.

Just when we thought the set was over; deadmau5 ran down from the building, cycled past the crowd on an LED BMX and continued playing on a raised moving platform, without his famous mask on!

After closing the show he headed off to the Electric Brixton for the Nokia after party.

Click below to see the full 30 minute version of the show from Claus Strasburger:

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

All the lovely people who came with us had a an awesome time! Here are some of those ‘lovely people’:

Jenny Hayden

Martyn Newton

Jon Choo

Mac Morrison (and Riaz Ahmed who happened to be standing just behind Mac!)

Also, we wanted to say a massive hello to Tim Harper, Dan Muslow and Chris Zoryk who were great fun on the night.

If you would like to know more about the mau5 then please head to the deadmau5 homepage (the guy is a legend). Or if you would like to make the #Switch to Lumia then head here. As per usual, we’ve got lots to tell you about the new Lumia range.
