Having already given us his thoughts on the Nokia Lumia 920, the founder of the PureViewClub, Marc Wielaert, now shares some of the photos that he has taken with Nokia’s flagship smartphone.
As well as sharing these great photos with us, Marc also gives a quick insight into each image.

Marc says: “A close-up of a flower in a living room. The light isn’t great but it isn’t too dark either. You can take a shot like this without using the flash and it will look quite natural.”

Marc says: “An outside shot on a clouded day. Lizzy is not mine, but she is one of the nicest dogs I’ve ever known. When the weather is good, Lizzy usually is waiting in the street for someone to be friendly to.”

Marc says: “An indoor, very close up shot of a snakeskin boot. It’s surprisingly detailed and shows the Bokeh-effect that I would expect from the Nokia 808 PureView.”

Marc says: “This was shot in great weather, offering the amazing colours from the glass panels of a Museum in Hilversum. Notice the details in the shaded foreground though. The lighting is surprisingly good.”

Marc says: “This final shot is from the science center, Nemo, in the dark Amsterdam harbour. The design by the Italian architect Renzo Piano looks like a ship, but in fact mirrors the tunnel it is built upon. I had to put the exposure value on -2 to achieve this result because of the bright spots on the building”

Some of the videos we get for the Nokia Connects: GO contest showcase something that is brand new (to us) and that make us really want to speak to the person who made it. Luke sent us his entry…and we got in touch…
What you do, would it be fair to call it parkour on a bike? Is there a name for it?
They both have similar fundamentals, however what you see in my video is just one side of a vast number of styles used in Trials Biking – if you’re interested in finding out what the other sides to our sport are or want to see more videos check out Trials Addict on Facebook.
This is what Luke does, by the way:
How long does it take to master, and do you need ‘intestinal fortitude’ to even try it?
Trials riding to me is all about self-expression – your riding is entirely down to you how you ride and it all depends on your goals and what mind set you have. It takes time to learn the basics like any sport however once you have those basic moves under your belt the rest is you against gravity. It’s a sport I feel is open to anyone who enjoys bikes and has interest towards what we do. I feel you can never master bike trials no matter what your level is there’s always going to be that obstacle or move you can’t push yourself into landing which makes what we do all the more addictive.
What has been your biggest wipeout/nastiest injury to date?
I started riding in late 2006 having my first bike for Christmas. In September 2008 I had a bike problem mid-air resulting in me landing from height onto a road rail and braking my wrist, elbow and getting 5 stitches in my other elbow. The elbows healed up in no time but the doctors said if I do not have an operation on my wrist I would have to live with it being broken but if I do have an operation it would stop my riding. So to date my wrist is still broken (we’re hard up North). [Ed - yikes...all that with a broken wrist. Props!]
What did you think of making the video with the Nokia Lumia 900? Easy? Any wrinkles?
My original intention for this video was to give myself a challenge. The phone was well up to the job even if the weather wasn’t. Auto conditions and easy to use, there is even a separate button on the phone to give you a quick easy phone to camera feature. My only issue at first was the auto focus while riding towards the phone gave a pulsing effect on playback however after being showed how to turn it off by a friend I’m more than happy with the quality.
What did you think of the phone in general?
After having played around with it I was surprised by what the phone actually offers. I’ve been with Android for the last 2 years and never thought Android gaming and apps could be beaten but Windows shocked me. I’m very impressed with the games available and social side of the phone. As a side note I forgot to charge the phone after filming all day and playing on games most of the night the next day I checked the battery life thinking ‘Oh, I’ll run out soon’ getting told I have 2 weeks left was quite the shock!
Even my mother and grandmother could use this phone!
I will be getting one for sure.
That’s awesome, Luke, thanks for your time, and great video. If you have any questions for Luke about his sport or about his time with the Nokia Lumia 900, be sure to drop us a comment below.

I could try to be impartial whilst writing this but it’s probably better to come clean from the off: I love photography books. I probably love photography books more than photography exhibitions. I love owning them and flicking through them at my leisure. I love the fact they can have a secretive element; risqué publications tucked away alongside innocent dust jackets, ready and willing to catch out an unsuspecting browser. Monographs, anthologies, biographies, catalogues, artist editions… I unashamedly love them all!
“Es una cosa muy seria!”
For anyone well versed in the history of photography, the name Robert Capa has always stood tall. However, if you want to make it stand a little taller, indulge yourself in his legendary memoirs,
Capa’s oft repeated photographic motto was ‘If your photographs aren’t good enough, then you’re not close enough’. And this infinitely readable recounting of his life through World War II helps illuminate and expand upon that sentiment; from getting caught short in a mine field to his up and down relationships with his employers to the sticky fact of his nationality and ‘enemy alien’ status throughout the Allied countries.
There are many stories which touch on combat correspondents eternal dilemmas; getting pictures back to print, the dreaded ‘pool’ system, the moral obligations and the perennial questioning by the actual soldiers ‘You mean, you don’t have to be here..?’ But it’s Capa’s gambling instinct and wit that ultimately makes him so likeable. His decision to be a part of the first wave of D-Day landings and his first ever parachute jump into occupied Sicily give you an idea of the risks he voluntarily took.
1976: The Year it all Changed
Prior to the mid-1970s if you were a serious photographer you worked in black and white. And then, ironically enough, out of the blue, came William Eggleston.

On the 25th May 1976, courtesy of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the accompanying book, ‘William Eggleston’s Guide’, all that changed. Colour photography had arrived in the art world and there was no looking back.
The catalogue, with its essay from infamous photography critic John Szarkowski, was reprinted in exact facsimile in 2002. One for every photographer’s bookshelf.
Les Américains
First published in France in 1958 and then in the U.S. in 1959, The Americans was the result of a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation grant issued in 1955. Robert Frank shot a reported 28 000 photos over a two year period and selected 83 for the final book.

Although in America it was initially derided as featuring ‘meaningless’, ‘muddy exposures’ with ‘drunken horizons’, The Americans slowly gained an iconic status and is now commonly listed as one of the most influential photography books of all time.
A first edition of the French original will set you back the price of a small car…
LIFE, eh?
Whilst dedicated monographs are nice for truly getting to grips with a photographers work, you sometimes just want something to dip into for some quick inspiration. There are literally thousands of these ‘overview’ anthologies but I’ve plumped for the one that never fails to excite me:

Six hundred pages of photojournalism at its finest; celebrities, wildlife, war zones, politicians, sports and science. The sheer scope, quality and ingenuity means every page is an absolute delight.
The Back Story on the Photos You Know…
I am in no doubt that when the publishers commissioned this book, they immediately took the rest of the week off. It simply has success written all over it. The premise is so simple that one can only assume it was getting the photographers to agree that prevented this book being published earlier.

A contact sheet is the print made directly from the negative strip, (so the negative is literally in contact with the paper). It is the first print made in the darkroom and gives the photographer an idea of which shots have worked and will be printed properly. It also gives an accurate time sequence to the photographs, showing what came directly before and after.
Sometimes a shot will be one of a carefully structured sequence and at other times it’ll come out of nowhere as a moment of pure serendipity. Whichever way it goes, this is a book that fleshes out the shots we know so well. It’s like looking at an artist’s diary….
These are the five books I’d recommend, but there are literally dozens more that could have been included. If there’s others that you think warrant a mention, please let us know.

Alongside the flagship Nokia Lumia 920 and midrange Nokia Lumia 820, the Nokia Lumia 620 adds more youthful appeal to our Windows Phone 8 range. Compact and fun, it takes advantage of a new ‘dual-shot’ technique to create a variety of interesting new colours and textures.
Dual Shot involves casting two layers of polycarbonate, a single base layer and a second colour, in a transparent or translucent layer, to produce depth effects and secondary colour blends. For example, yellow and cyan are combined to produce an exciting new lime green, our own favourite. What’s more, since the Nokia Lumia 620 uses exchangeable shells, you can change the colour as often as you change your mood with seven shells to choose from.
While this may be the most affordable of our three new Windows Phone 8 smartphones, it packs a punch. The 3.8-inch display has the same sunlight readability enhancements as the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, so you should be able to see what’s on the screen however sunny your surroundings (not a problem for those of us in Finland right now).
It also takes advantage of the same Nokia exclusive camera lenses, like Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot, transforming the creative power of the 5-megapixel camera and front-facing VGA camera. Of course it also has the world’s best mapping and location experience, based on the HERE platform, with Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and Nokia City Lens all available.
Of course, with the emphasis on a younger audience, it also has Nokia Music, providing free streaming of ad-free tracks with no subscription or registration required and the ability to download playlists to listen offline. With NFC connectivity, you can easily pair the Nokia Lumia 620 with one of the great speakers from JBL, such as the JBL PlayUp Portable for Nokia, to set your music free. Or if you want to avoid upsetting everyone on the bus, try the Nokia Purity Pro Stereo Headset by Monster for professional audio sounds on the move.

Finally, this is Windows Phone 8, so the Nokia Lumia 620 comes with Live Tiles for updates direct to the Start Screen, PeopleHub for all your address books in one place and a Me Tile to make it easy to post and track notifications across social networks. With Xbox Live, Microsoft Office, 7GB of SkyDrive storage and faster, safer surfing with Internet Explorer 10, it’s hard to know what to do first. You might want to start with Angry Birds Star Wars or Words with Friends – just a suggestion.
Excluding any local taxes or operator subsidies, the Nokia Lumia 620 will cost around $249 USD and will be available from Q1 2013.
