My Favourite Mobile: Neil Broadley

Nokia 110

Alongside the Nokia experts sharing their Start screens over the recent Christmas period, we’ve also asked the Mobile Phone division to share their favourites from our launches of 2012.

First up is Neil Broadley, who is a technology marketing director, and best known to Conversations as a mobile guru when it comes to Asha and mobile phones.

So what’s his favourite pick? Big drum roll, please, for the… Nokia 110.

Nokia 110

Who would you recommend this phone to?

I would recommend this phone to everyone – in fact I use it myself. It is the perfect vacation phone. When I’ve finished work and I no longer need Mail for Exchange I put my beautiful Nokia Asha 311 to one side and use the Nokia 110 as my second phone. I have a yellow one!

Why? It packs everything I need – Internet, Facebook, Twitter. It’s also incredibly well-made so it stands up to the inevitable drops and bumps as I play with my two sons, and has a great battery life so I can go weeks on one charge.

What do you think is the one unique feature in this phone?

For this type of entry level feature phone it has to be the Nokia Store. Where else can you get 40 free EA Games, and access to thousands more, all via our Nokia app store? Pretty important for when Dad has forgotten to charge the Nintendo DSs!

What’s the killer app you recommend on this phone?

The Nokia Xpress Browser. It gives me easy access to my favourite websites like the BBC and Autosport while I’m away and because it uses the cloud to compress the web page. It works really well over whatever cellular network I find myself on. If I’ve been good, I might even be abroad and therefore roaming – so it saves me money too.

Where to buy NFC tags and how to edit them

In our recent ‘eight reasons you want NFC on your phone‘ story, we explained why NFC is here to stay and why it makes your life easier. It prompted a few of you to ask about how to write your own NFC tags and also where to get them form. I said I’d look into it, and I have. Hopefully this will help.

It’s probably best to start with where to get your own NFC tags from, and I’ll then go onto explaining how to write your own data to them.

NFC tags are traditionally embedded into pieces of card, paper or flat pieces of plastic. But times have changed and so has the design of NFC tags.

Where to buy NFC tags

RapidNFC

RapidNFC manufactures and supplies NFC tags around the world and while I’ve not purchased any tags from there myself, the products on their site look top-notch.

Not only can they supply the NFC tags in the traditional sticker form, they’ve got some brilliant new designs. Such as wristbands, keyfobs, beermats, and even a NFC-enabled pens.

RapidNFC NFC Wristbands

The prices of these products are reasonable and can vary depending on my many items you wish to purchase.

For example, a Mini Six Pack of stickers will cost you £4.50 per pack, and the Premium Ultralight Silicone Wristband will cost you £1.65 each for a single piece. However, if you order more than nine, they’ll charge you £1.35 each. The price again reduces at over 99 and 999 pieces.

Task Launcher Pack

Once you’ve browsed for the best product to suit you, you can choose whether you want the tags to come encoded, or not. Asking RapidNFC to encode the item for you will typically cost 5 pence an item.

If you choose for RapidNFC to encode the item, the options available are either a URL or text and you enter those details into the text entry box on their site.

RapidNFC Pens

You’ll also want to decided whether your new NFC tags are to be locked, or not. If you ask for unlocked tags, you’ll be able to write your own data to the tag (and so will anybody else, if they decide to). Locked tags mean that the data is permanently set and can’t be change. This is a much safer option if you’re looking to put your tags out in a public area. That way, it means that people can’t hijack your tags with their own data.

If you can’t decide which product is best for you, RapidNFC have put together a Trial NFC Starter Pack priced at £14.95.

It contains:

  • 11 plain stickers
  • 6 printed stickers
  • 2 non-metal stickers
  • 2 small paper tickets
  • 1 wristband
  • 1 keyfob
  • 1 plastic card

That’s 24 NFC tags! What a bargain.

Nokia Lumia 620

Our newest Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

The family is growing.

Writing and editing NFC tags

There are a number of ways to write data to an NFC tag, but the best and easiest way to do it is to use an app on your phone.

NFC Interactor for Nokia Lumia smartphones costs £1.49 ($1.99) and provides plenty of NFC-tag-editing goodness.

Writing tags NFC info

For starters, if you’re looking to write or edit a tag, it’s good to see what’s on there first. NFC Interactor allows you to read all the data stored on the tag in great detail, such as; tag size, URL directs, or any text that’s on the tag. Just touch the NFC tag to the back of your Nokia Lumia to gain access to the tags’ info.

Once you’ve established that the tag is good to write on, go ahead and give it a go.

You can add a URL, or vCard data, so that when people touch their phone against the tag they will see this information. However, if you want something a little more fancy and clever, experiment with the app.

There’s the option to add a voice message to the tag, which the other person can listen to once they tap the tag with their phone. Also, you can create launch tags, too. These will open certain apps on your phone, just by touching the tag and the phone together.

Tag composer - smart poster Tag composer - social network

For example, you can program the tag to open Facebook, or Nokia Music. You can even program the tag to open a destination on the phone using Nokia Maps, making navigation a whole lot easier and quicker.

Do let us know if you’ve purchased any tags from RapidNFC or used NFC Interactor to edit or write the tags, we’d love to hear about how you’re using NFC.

Lumia 820 hands on reviews

 nokia lumia 820

Time to focus on the Nokia Lumia 820 now, and there have been plenty of reviews over the holidays to choose from. I’ve selected the best for you to peruse and enjoy.

Michael Faro-Tusino has had the phone in his hands for a couple of weeks, and the first opinion he expresses is ‘Wow!’ Not a bad start there, and he goes on to take a look at the design, camera performance and of course the operating system. His conclusion? That the Nokia Lumia is

‘a killer phone’

Someone who is pitching the Nokia Lumia 820 against the competition (in one of the last ‘Dogfights’ before he left) is Aaron from PhoneDog. It’s a two part video, the first is a basic comparison, the second being a more detailed look at the two phones:

He mentions a couple of things that could elevate the Nokia phones and Windows Phone 8 above the competition – Family Rooms are ‘a fantastic option’ and Xbox Live integration could be a ‘game changer’.

So what do you think about the Nokia Lumia 820? Have you managed to get your hands on one yet? Does it beat the competition in your opinion? Let me know in the comments below, or drop your thoughts on Twitter.

Riccardo Webb: My Windows Phone 8 Start Screen

Riccardo Webb – my Windows Phone 8 Start Screen

Riccardo Webb is a Social Media Experience Manager at Nokia and is partly responsible for some of the social activities that Nokia is involved in. What’s on his Start screen? Social stuff like Twitter or Facebook? Let’s take a look.

RiccardoWebb

What apps have you prioritised and why?

“Well, the only two big squares on my Start screen are for my personal and work email accounts. Contacts, Messaging and making calls all come second…funny thing isn’t it? Today most notifications, whether from Twitter, Facebook, email or IM come through to my email account which is why I’ve made these the focus of my Start screen.”

“The most useful app on my Start screen is probably the settings button, easy to access so I can change Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flight mode settings etc. The most useless app on my Start screen are probably those images of Nintendo games you see, but hey, they make me smile every time I unlock my screen.”

What apps do you use to pass the time?

“I load up Nokia music and play Eye of the Tiger and also fire up Plants vs Zombies! ”

What is the last app you paid for, and what does it do?

“I paid for RSS Central, an app that downloads and displays my RSS feeds which bring me news stories I actually care about; instead of celebrity gossip and people having babies.”

Which app(s) is your guilty pleasure?

“I’d have to say Cinemagraph and Pinspiration Pro. One for doing fun things when you’re sitting somewhere boring, and the other to find a little inspiration for a tattoo design I’ve been working on for the last 4 months.”

My Favourite Mobile: Seppo Aaltonen

Nokia 206

Seppo heads up Nokia’s Mobile Phones strategic planning team. It’s a big role but when it comes to his favourite among our recent mobile phones, the emphasis is on simplicity and performance.

Seppo’s choice is one of the most recent entrants to the Mobile Phones portfolio. It’s the… Nokia 206.

Nokia 206

Who in your family would you recommend this phone to?

When I used the Nokia 206 prototype at home, ahead of the launch, my daughter constantly begged me to give it to her! She just loves the design, colours and the camera of the Nokia 206. The other extreme is my father. He thinks that the battery standby time of a record high 47 days just rocks when you are a road warrior.

What do you think is the one unique feature in this phone?

Slam and the rocking battery performance!

What’s the killer app you recommend on this phone?

I just think the easy, fun and fast sharing of pictures and videos with Slam is really something cool. It’s a potentially disruptive low-end innovation, especially for many in the mobile phone target segments that are highly social but affordability constrained!

With Slam you get the benefits of NFC with ‘easy touch sharing’ in a great value device.

Are you tempted by the Nokia 206? Let us know in the comments.

Go freestyle creative to win a trip to Burton US Snowboarding Open

Snowboarding-in-New-Zealand

Snowboarding might be all about stamina, balance and instinct, but the sport was born in a Eureka moment of creative thinking. Way back in 1965, a big-hearted guy called Sherman Poppen fastened two skis together and attached a rope at one end, so his daughter could glide down a hill in Muskegon, Michigan.

Pop-tarting, cannonballing and shredding

Things have changed a heck of a lot since then. Thanks to snowboarding legends like Jake Burton, who founded the company that shares his name, snowboarding’s popularity has skyrocketed. In fact, snowboarding, once considered the passion of the poorly dressed, the rude and the radical, is now one of the world’s fastest growing sports. In the US alone, there’s an estimated 6 million boarders pop-tarting, cannonballing and shredding.

win VIP tickets with Nokia and Burton

Thanks to this popularity, there’s more movies, more photography and more music dedicated to this unique tribe. But for a sport that prides itself on constantly coming up with new kick ass tricks, there’s always room for something different. And that’s where you come in.

Win an all expenses paid trip to Colorado

As part of this year’s Burton US Open, held in the stunning resort of Vail, Colorado, Nokia are seeking two talented individuals to join their media team from 28th February 2013, for a four day, all-expenses, paid trip. Their task will be to document all the awesome action with the world’s most innovative smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 920. The end result will be showcased, for the whole world to see, on Clashmusic.com and in Clash Magazine. Runners up will receive a Burton Snowboard and a Nokia Lumia 920.

The-Burton-European-Open-Halfpipe

To make your mark on the slopes, all you need to do is show what snowboarding and its culture mean to you. You can use whatever medium you want: film (two mins max), photography, art or design, as long as it illustrates what you think makes snowboarding amazing.

Once you’ve finished, submit your entry through Talenthouse’s Creative invite right here.

Any questions, pop them in the comments below and we’ll do our best to help.
