11/01 #XperiaZchat with Sharath Muddaiah – roundup
We ran the final CES #XperiaZchat this past Thursday with Sharath Muddaiah, Xperia Z Marketing Manager.
Thanks to all who took the time to join the discussion – for those who couldn’t make it, we’ve pulled a roundup together below.
Enjoy.
Is PlayStation Mobile available in every country? (as asked by @odinnot and others)
PlayStation Mobile is currently available in selected markets, we’ll share more info on rollout in other areas as it happens.
How much will Xperia Z cost? (as asked by @IL_ZoOm, @MaxwellBruka, @Ya7ya_M7md and others)
We give local retailers/operators the chance to inform on pricing and availability specifics, so please check-in with them for the latest details.
How does Xperia Z fare as a gaming device? (as asked by @lovenemesis, @ate_ball and others)
Xperia Z is PlayStation Certified, and loaded with the latest Adreno 320 graphics chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor (clocked @ 1.5Ghz).
In short, this means mobile gamers have both the best in class content and hardware at their disposal for flawless gaming on-the-go.
Will Xperia Z and Xperia ZL launch in Canada? (as asked by @gmpope, @ahamchi and others)
Yep – both Xperia Z and Xperia ZL will launch in Canada. Again, please drop your local retailers a note for the latest on pricing and availability schedules.
When will Xperia Z be available in the US? (As asked by @SifosiD, @snoopster222, @theAndrewHolmes and others)
We’re currently finalising agreements with our partners in the US, and will update you as soon as we can with any developments.
Can we also have one? (As asked by @geovannyht and @Pro0oMan)
Another nice try
We’ll look at getting a competition or giveaway sorted over the next few months!
How does the screen fare against Xperia P? (As asked by @hippie403)
Xperia Z’s screen is every bit as bright as Xperia P’s – and, this time around we’ve introduced full HD Reality Display too
Can you tell us a little more about the glass? (As asked by @mwuhani3609 and others)
We can’t comment on supplier brand names, but Xperia Z uses durable tempered glass that has equivalent specs to Gorilla/Dragontrail.
When will different carriers get the coloured versions of Xperia Z? (As asked by @paulcusentino, @lovenemesis and others)
Xperia Z’s colour range will vary by both market and carrier – more details on this will be announced over the coming months. Again, for more details on this, please drop your local operators a note.
Can you shoot video underwater on Xperia Z? (As asked by @Marcello__D and others)
Sure – we’ve used Xperia Z to capture video underwater, the results were sweet. We’ll look at sharing some of this footage further down the line on the blog.
What is Xperia Z’s battery life like? (As asked by @Midou2FR and others)
Battery life depends on how you use the phone, it can be influenced by how heavily you use more demanding functionality (movies, games, apps etc). But, our new Battery STAMINA Mode is cool in that it automatically shuts down apps when the phone is in standby mode, and then reboots them when you flick the screen back on. All in all, it can extend standby mode by four times or more… which doesn’t do battery life any harm

CES 2013 – the week that was, Calum MacDougall
Hi all – a quick note on the week that was,
I’m still feeling the strain of being on my feet all/every day during CES 2013; meeting with partners and media and speaking to people on the show floor was tiring stuff, but as always, the fun far outweighed the fatigue
The response in Vegas was phenomenal; a palpable buzz from bloggers, media, analysts and show visitors alike that surpassed even our (high) expectations! Now we’re looking forward to launching our Android smartphone, Xperia Z in the coming weeks, into the hands of consumers across the world.
Someone from the team asked me to share my top highlight/favourite memory from the week. Too many to choose from really, but if forced I’d actually pick the raft of 12 awards, that by my reckoning made Xperia Z the most-awarded product of CES
Winner

Contender/finalist
TechnoBuffalo | Reader’s Choice | http://tchno.be/ZIowr3
CNet | Best of CES | http://bit.ly/VP1yrk
Wow. What a tally! Without being overly immodest, it is just great to see a product which the team has put so much care, attention and love into be recognised in this way. It’s a fantastic start to what we think will be an incredibly exciting year.
There’s no rest for the wicked, even before CES we began planning for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona so keep an eye on us during the event, and see what else we have in store…
We’ll also be bringing you more live content from the ground and who knows, hopefully I’ll retain my guest blogging slot!

How Nokia Music is showcasing America’s coolest music scenes

If there’s one thing that the US has given the world that we can all love, it’s music. From Blues and Jazz to Rock and Soul, this cultural melting pot of a country has taken musical influences from across the world, and time after time, created something amazing. And, what’s more, this is still going on every single day in cities across America.
Getting down and dirty
To celebrate these constantly evolving subcultures and sounds, Nokia Music has teamed up with Somesuch & Co, the Sundance Channel and four talented moviemakers. These independent directors, Abteen Bagheri, Emily Kai Bock, Bob Harlow and Tyrone Lebon, have gone underground to get up close and personal with the people who make their respective cities get down and dirty.

Six of the best
They shine a light on the indie-cool of Portland, the friendly vibes emanating from New Orleans’ bounce movement, the gritty underground scene in Detroit, and sub-rosa rap on the busy streets of New York City. They also take a look at how strip clubs promote rap in Atlanta and artists making their mark in Los Angles.

New American Noise
The result is a unique hour long documentary, made up of six ten-minute short films, called New American Noise. Scheduled to premier on the Sundance channel this Friday, it promises a unique insight into music’s evolution in America from the perspectives of music fans from all walks of life.

Celebrate good times
And for the next six weeks we’ll be celebrating this incredible musical diversity too by taking a closer look at each of the cities featured. So if you eager to learn more about how musical subcultures thrive or if you just want to discover some cool new tunes to add to your Nokia Music playlists be sure to check out these posts. Alternatively, follow @NokiaMusic for all the latest updates.
In the meantime, remember to put a note in your dairy for this Friday, January 18th, when New American Noise will show why America still knows how to shake its booty with the best of them.

Discover more lenses for your Nokia Lumia 920 & Lumia 820

Nokia’s very own, and very cool, Smart Shoot, Cinemagraph and Panorama are just three camera lenses that help you unlock your creative potential with your Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 820.
Now, more and more developers are starting to release their lenses for Windows Phone 8 too – just think of them as apps for your smartphone’s camera.
As you would expect many of them are related to imaging and taking photos but there are also several lenses that extend the functionality of the camera in ingenious ways.

To get more lenses for your Lumia, just open the camera and tap the Lenses icon on the viewfinder screen.
You will see a list of the lenses that you currently have installed and at the bottom you’ll see the invitation to ‘find more lenses’. Tapping that will take you to a list of the lenses that are currently available for you to download.
Just like in the Windows Store, some cost money but many of them are free. Here are five lenses to whet your appetite.
Reading Lens (free for limited time)

This is a simple and clever use of your Lumia’s camera and will be particularly useful if you’ve lost your reading glasses!
Use your camera to focus on small text and, hey presto, you can see it large and clear on your display. You can also turn on the light and take snapshots of the page.
Many people struggle with their eyesight and Reading Lens could be a good temporary solution if you desperately need to look at a document and don’t have your glasses close to hand.
CNN iReport (free)

Citizen journalism has become an increasingly established part of the news business and this lens extension from CNN makes it much more convenient for you to share your images and video with them.
After launching the iReport lens you’ll need to login, register or sign in as a guest. This is so that CNN can contact you if you’ve stumbled upon a massive story!
After that process is complete, you’ll see what very much looks like a normal camera. However, you’ll see some icons that also bring up some ‘layers’ over the viewfinder such as the form to submit your content (pictured above) or adding your content to similar assignments in your area (below).

CamWow (free)

After all that reporting on breaking news, you’ll need something a little more light-hearted and fun. CamWow should do the trick nicely!
This adds a host of filters to your images, which is nothing out of the ordinary, but this appeals because it is so easy and quick to use.
The camera will show four screens each with a different filter applied. Don’t like any of those effects? Just swipe across the screen to bring up four more filters. Repeat until you find something you want, tap on it and it’ll bring up the filter effect to the maximum display size.
If you have a favourite filter you can pin it to Start for quick access the next time and CamWow even works with the front facing camera.
Handyscan (free or £2.29)

As its name suggests, this lens extension scans your documents, receipts, photos, statements or newspaper and magazine articles.
They’re then stored securely on your Lumia and can uploaded to cloud services such as Dropbox or SkyDrive.
This app will work on all Lumias, and the paid for version gets extra features such as PDF conversion and restoring your backups.
Voice Controlled Camera (free or £0.79p)

Before you can use this lens, you’ll need to enable speech recognition on your Lumia and download your speech language pack (if you haven’t done so already).
To do this go to Settings > Speech and then check the Enable Speech Recognition Service box. Tap ‘Speech Language’ and select your language to download the pack.
When you’re all set up – open the app and you can take pictures using your voice!
It uses simple commands, such as ‘Take Picture’ or ‘Ready Camera’ which starts a countdown timer. The developer promises that voice controls for the flash and focus assist light are coming soon.
As developers start exploring the potential of lenses there are bound to be more of them appearing in the Windows Store in the coming weeks and months, so keep your eyes peeled!
Let us know in the comments box if there is a great lens that you’d like to tell us about.

6 amazing families who made music history

For decades there’s been debate about whether we inherit our skills or learn them, nature versus nurture. One argument for the latter is musical families. You find them everywhere, often crowded around a piano, or jamming together. Some families, though, not only play amazingly, they change musical history. Here’s six who’ve done just that and most definitely deserve a place on your Nokia Music playlist.
Pop – The Jacksons
Just a single generation of the Jackson family produced nine stars (two more than the Osmonds!). Brothers Jackie, Tito and Jermaine started in the 60s as the Jackson Brothers, later adding Marlon and Michael to become the Jackson 5. On the female side of the family all three sisters (La Toya, Rebbie and Janet) had chart hits, with Janet being the most successful of them (right up until her wardrobe malfunction at the 2008 superbowl). At the height of their popularity The Jacksons even had a TV show featuring eight of the nine siblings. Whatever happened to cute little Michael?
Film – The Newmans
In the world of film scoring we need look no further than the astonishing Newman family. Alfred Newman, one of the originators of film music, winner of 9 academy awards (more than any other composer) and eventually music director for 20th Century Fox, had two composer brothers, Lionel and Emil (also academy nominated, with Lionel winning in 1969). Later Alfred’s sons David (Ice Age, Serenity) and Thomas Newman (Skyfall, Wall-E, American Beauty) and nephew Randy Newman (Toy Story, Cars, Meet the Parents) are all prolific composers too.
Rock – The Followils
Brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared together with their cousin Matthew are better known as Kings of Leon. Hailing from Talihina, Oklahoma and named for their grandfather they released their first album 10 years ago (Youth and Young Manhood) and have steadily risen in popularity through the decade. Their biggest hit to date was the frankly dangerous sounding 2008’s “Sex Is On Fire”.
Classical – The Bachs
Johann Sebastian Bach has long been considered the grandfather of baroque and one of the greatest classical composers of all time, but he wasn’t the only Bach to make his mark. His father and uncles were all established musicians and his brother Johann Christoph was also a noted composer of the time. Spring forward a generation and you have his sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel taking over the reigns. Pieces from all four are still in the classical repertoire today with J.S. being one of the most performed composers of them all. This is the legendary Glenn Gould’s interpretation of the aria from Goldberg Variations (if you listen carefully you can hear him humming too).
Jazz – The Marsalis Family
Patriach Ellis Marsalis is a noted jazz performer (piano) and teacher in his native New Orleans, and his four of his sons Branford (sax), Wynton (trumpet), Delfeayo (trombone) and Jason (drums) have followed him into the trade. The family often contribute to each other’s recordings and have recorded under the name “The Marsalis Family”. This clip is from a concert supporting their 2002 album “A Jazz Celebration”. Apparently, the bassist is unrelated.
Folk – The Wainrights
Ok, maybe it is a little stretch filing the whole family under folk but when songwriter and humorist Louden Wainwright III married Kate McGarrigle (of Kate and Anna McGarrigle fame), their musical union brought forth both Rufus and Martha Wainwright. Louden wrote songs for both children, including the now ironically titled “Rufus is a Tit Man”. Not to be outdone Louden’s daughter from his 2nd wife, Lucy Wainwright Roche is also in the business and continues the folk tradition. This clip features Louden and his offspring.
And as a closing pop fact for the musical family theme, did you know that the 50 million album selling recording artist Norah Jones is the daughter of the late Ravi Shankar, the Indian sitar maestro? Thought not. Ok, what which mega talented families have we missed here?
