Sony Mobile launches new global Xperia marketing campaign inviting consumers to experience the best of Sony in a smartphone
26th February, 2013, London - Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) has revealed its most ambitious marketing campaign yet for its Xperia smartphones with a significant global marketing investment.
- Integrated marketing campaign highlights the best of Sony in the flagship Xperia™ Z smartphone
- Iconic creative execution synonymous with the Sony brand
- Most ambitious marketing campaign to date for the Xperia™ brand
The integrated campaign, which will be deployed globally in over 20 markets across TV, print, digital, out-of-home and retail from March 2013, highlights the best of Sony’s innovative technologies as found in its new premium Xperia Z smartphone. In a creative execution that features a selection of Sony’s much-loved products from the past, the campaign reflects the unique consumer experiences that only Sony can deliver as it looks back at iconic moments in history and showcases Sony’s technologies available today.
”Our latest campaign celebrates Sony’s proud heritage of innovation and how the brand continues to touch the lives of people around the world,”
said Steve Walker, Chief Marketing Officer at Sony Mobile. “The launch of our new flagship Xperia Z smartphone marks a milestone as it truly brings together the innovative Sony technology, entertainment and connected experiences into a single device.”
By utilising the talents of celebrated director Tarsem Singh, the campaign takes consumers on a colourful journey to experience the vibrancy and excitement of the Holi festival in India. Every year thousands converge to witness this festival of colour with its explosion of coloured powders and water, creating the perfect setting for the Xperia Z smartphone, with its water-and dust resistant design, to beautifully capture, share and enjoy this visual spectacle. Tarsem’s stunning visuals have been perfectly complemented by David Bowie’s aptly titled classic track ‘Sound and Vision’ which was specially remixed by Sonjay Prabhakar.
Acclaimed director Tarsem began his career in music video creation, making his name with his music video for R.E.M.’s track ‘Losing My Religion’ which won the MTV Video Music Awards ‘Video of the Year’ in 1991. His feature film directorial debut came with the visually striking The Cell (2000) and since then, he has become known for his trademark colour-saturated and vibrant visual style. His other films include The Fall (2006), Immortals (2011) and most recently Mirror Mirror (2012) starring Julia Roberts.
“The Xperia Z has one of the most incredible screens you can think of for today,” commented Tarsem. “It really records colour vividly and this festival of Holi is about as vivid as you can get.”
The global campaign was officially debuted during the premier mobile industry trade show Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Visitors to Sony’s stand can see demonstrations of the new and highly anticipated Xperia Z smartphone and Xperia Tablet Z – showcasing the best of Sony innovation including sleek designs, Full HD displays, cutting-edge camera technologies, One-touch functions for content sharing and connectivity, and unique water and dust resistant technology. Fresh from the #SonyMWC stand – a closer look at Xperia Tablet Z…
There’s a real buzz here the Sony booth after we announced the global availability of the latest addition to the Xperia family yesterday – Xperia Tablet Z.
Xperia Tablet Z is the world’s slimmest and lightest* tablet – we’ve been describing it as “no-compromise”. What that really means, is that you get a consistent experience throughout design, hardware and software…
So, here’s a look at some of the stand-out features -
Design
Something we’re particularly proud of – Xperia Tablet Z is the world’s slimmest and lightest LTE tablet (boasting a trim 6.9mm frame and weighing in at just under 500g).
Xperia Tablet Z shares the same “Omnibalance” design as sibling, Xperia Z – every inch was crafted with precision, ensuring symmetry and balance throughout. It’s also just as durable – Xperia Tablet Z has the highest levels of water and dust resistance of any tablet**… Blogging in the bath? Walking and texting in the rain? No probs.
Signature Sony display and audio tech
Xperia Tablet Z has a 10.1 HD WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) Reality Display – it’s the work of Sony BRAVIA screen engineers, the same guys behind HD, Blu Ray, 3D and 4K.
The display is powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, our second iteration of this technology – it upscales content by enhancing contrast, increasing colour saturation and reducing noise to enhance the clarity and richness of each visual – try it with a standard YouTube video to see for yourself
We’ve also leveraged Sony’s expertise in audio – Xperia Tablet Z comes locked and loaded with four speaker outputs that use Sony’s S-Force Front Surround 3D and Sony’s Clear Audio+ mode to ensure every track is aurally optimised… rave away, however the device is held…
You also get Sony’s camera expertise; an 8MP rear camera featuring “Exmor R for mobile” as well as a 2MP HD front-facing camera for killer snaps whatever the weather. Put “Exmor R for mobile” to the test when video chatting – it works a treat, even in the most dimly-lit conditions.
Connectivity
Xperia Tablet Z is the most connected tablet available*** – in short, that means it has more connectivity options (NFC, Wifi, DNLA, Bluetooth to name but a few…) than any other – and that means you get a broader content experience.
It also makes use of Sony’s One-touch functions to let you ping content from one device to another (TV, smartphone, tablet and laptop) – you can use Xperia Tablet Z as a universal remote to control other devices, share snaps, tunes with a single touch
It’s worth noting, TV SideView is a new addition to Google play that uses second-screen connectivity to provide an entirely new way to interact with your TV. While enjoying your favourite series, you can read about the cast and related information – whilst FB liking / sharing and tweeting about it with your friends along the way…
Performance and hardware
Another thing we’re proud of, is the fact that Xperia Tablet Z is the first to include the Snapdragon S4 Pro asynchronous quad core processor, with a built in 4G/LTE modem. So, you get stutter-free performance even from the most graphically demanding games.
Just a with Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z features Battery STAMINA mode – it shuts down the apps you don’t need when you’re not using them, and can improve standby by 4 times or more – super smart.
Check out some of our shots from the booth below!

Making sense of the next digital revolution

The story starts in Bangkok, where Stephen Elop enters a small retail booth just two weeks ago. Inside, the walls are covered in strips of paper with long numbers on them. What’s going on here?
The long numbers are telephone numbers, of course. People can go in and buy a mobile phone and a number and suddenly they are a member of the digital economy.
“You may not have a driver’s license, a passport, or even a birth certificate — these classic markers of identity have come to symbolize privileged admission to many aspects of the global economy,” said Stephen. “But to gain access to the digital economy, all you need is a phone number and a mobile device.”
The next billion will join the digital age far faster than the first billion, gaining access to a level of information and communication that was previously reserved for the middle class or, in the case of cloud computing, enterprises.
Mobile expertise
Nokia has been involved in this for 25 years, of course. And while it’s very often the Lumia range that gets many of the headlines, Stephen says the company is extremely proud of its Mobile Phones business that makes very affordable first, feature and smartphones.
This week’s announcements of the Nokia 105 and Nokia 301 are about remaking the classic mobile phone and bringing Nokia innovation to lower price points.

This dramatic, high-speed change to people’s capabilities isn’t without challenges, of course. Stephen picks out three, in particular.
- How can we provide customers with affordable ways to access content and data?
- How can we help everyone gain access to the power of the app economy?
- There’s also a discovery challenge. How can we help new entrants to the digital world find content that’s relevant to them?
These are three challenges that Nokia has been working very hard to solve for the next billion consumers.
All-you-can-sip
Not everyone can afford a traditional data plan. By the same token, network operators have their own constraints. In the busy, highly populated cities where the next digital revolution is happening, they don’t have the infrastructure to get everyone connected at the same time.
“Nokia’s approach to help address network constraints is to make the Internet experience smarter,” says Stephen.

This is where cloud computing is coming to the rescue. Nokia Xpress Browser has been used by more than 70 million people over the last 12 months. People who need an internet solution that sips at data allowances rather than guzzles. It also allows operators to make their customers happy without overloading their infrastructure.
“The app economy story is often a story of vast numbers: the number of apps available, the downloads and the user figures.”
But what actually matters when it comes to apps? Certainly, it’s not six-or-seven-figure numbers. What customers actually require is a great quality experience that has relevance to what they want to do with the data on their phones.
Content you can use
Nokia’s tailored content that’s relevant to local audiences is one step towards a solution. Nokia has so far allowed close to 100 million people try out its Nokia Life package, an SMS-based service that gives users personally and geographically customised information, news and entertainment.

Today Nokia announces the fifth country to get the Nokia Life. Following successful rollouts in India, China, Indonesia and Nigeria, Kenya will soon gain access to the service.
The final part of the puzzle addressed in Stephen’s keynote is the challenge of discovery. It’s hard for many to remember what it was like when we first accessed the Internet. And in any case, the Net was a lot smaller back then.

Today, when people first get online it can be totally overwhelming. They have no idea where to go next. Or where to find anything that’s useful to them. The farthest a lot of people get to is Facebook.
So how can we help them? With curated, locally meaningful content. The Xpress Browser knows where you are and what language you speak from the details of the network connection you’re using. It can use that to put together an intelligent package of content and to sniff out local places using Nokia Nearby.
The great opportunity

“Connecting the next billion is a huge undertaking,” said Stephen.
“The real challenge, and thus opportunity lies, in getting the consumer experience right and making the costs of entry affordable to the individual.”

Nokia and MakerBot take smartphone customization to the next level
You only have to look at Nokia’s history to see that personalizing technology is in our DNA. Starting in the mid 90s with exchangeable shells, we’ve always believed you should have the chance to showcase your individualism. Now, we’re happy to announce, we’re working with MakerBot to take customization to a whole new level.
The 3D printing maestros
When it comes to 3D printing there’s no better company on the planet to partner with than MakerBot. Not only are they experts in their field, but they create amazing technology. Their Thingverse Customizer, launched last month, has been especially designed to let users customize 3D designs right inside their browser. This means you no longer have to be a designer to create cool 3D designs and prints.
Ready for a swell shell?
This is very good news for owners of the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 520. Why? Because as of today, they’ll have the chance to create their very own shells. The exchangeable shells on these two phones offer amazing possibilities for people’s creativity. We already provided MakerBot with the specs for the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 520, enabling them to optimize them for printing on a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer. With the customizer it’s even easier. All you have to do is choose the design. Then add any word and bang you have your custom shell.
Now that Nokia Lumia 3D printing files are available on MakerBot’s Thingiverse.com and optimized for customization through the MakerBot Thingiverse Customizer, the options are only limited by your imagination. To get started all you have to do is go to Thingverse and get hold of a creative license!
Imagine, create, love
By contributing the 3DK for the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 520 covers and working with MakerBot to make 3D printing affordable, we hope to not only accelerate the development of an exciting new technology, but also inspire people’s creativity.
So, the question is, what sort of shell will you make today?

Nokia Asha 305 scoops top MWC prize for ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’

At Mobile World Congress today, the Nokia Asha 305 picked up the award for ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ in the GSMA Global Mobile Awards for 2013.
The winners were unveiled today in a ceremony hosted by comedian, David Walliams.
Decided by a panel of esteemed journalists and analysts, the award rewards many thousands of hours of work by talented engineers and designers. Plus all the work done by their forerunners, of course, whose experience the Nokia Asha 305 builds upon.
In fact, three Nokia devices were nominated by the judging panel in the ‘Best Feature or Entry Level Phone’ category: the Nokia 103, Nokia Asha 302 and Nokia Asha 305.
But it was the Asha 305 that won in the final count.
“We’re proud that the Nokia Asha 305 has been recognised by one of the world’s leading voices for the mobile industry,” said Jussi Nevanlinna, Nokia’s VP of marketing, Mobile Phones.
“The Nokia Asha has gone from strength to strength, recently achieving smartphone status from Gfk and – as part of the full Asha Touch line-up of smartphones – has achieved no. 1 status in its price point across 25 countries.”

Nokia helping to deliver quality and success for app developers

A winning combination of Nokia’s innovative devices and unique tools in music, imaging and location services are the magical ingredients that are helping developers find success with quality apps.
This was the clear message to a packed auditorium of enthusiastic developers taking part in the Nokia App Developer Conference on the opening day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Led by Marco Argenti, Head of Developer Experience at Nokia, a succession of speakers underlined how Nokia is dedicated to helping developers find success, get more downloads, monetise their creations and make better apps with tried and tested tools provided for free.
Chief among these tools are our industry-leading technologies in areas such as music, imaging and location services. These platforms are freely available to developers who can easily integrate them in their own apps.
A developer, for example, can use Nokia Music’s API to integrate music into their own app. In addition, the developer doesn’t need to negotiate individual music deals; that all comes with Nokia Music.
Creating richer app experiences benefits the developer and, of course, it also benefits the end user of the app – people like you and me. Quality was the watchword of the day.

New apps
To demonstrate the possibilities provided by these tools to create great experiences for Windows Phone devices, several new apps were unveiled at the Nokia App Developer conference.
- Burton: An app that has everything a snowboarder needs: snow and weather forecasts, cool music playlists, locate your friends on the slopes and Burton Sequencer, a camera lens using Nokia camera technology to combine a sequence of action shots in a single photo.
- Foursquare: This popular social mapping experience is coming to Windows Phone 8 with voice commands, NFC content sharing and full Nokia Maps integration; Nokia’s exclusive version of the app will have augmented reality for discovering places of interest. A brand new Foursquare app will also be coming soon to Nokia Asha devices.
- Tumblr: This Windows Phone 8 app for Tumblr will allow on-the-go posting of text, images, video, audio, links, quotes and chats. It will also be the first official Tumblr app on any operating system to integrate voice controls. Plus, there’s a Live Tile to show your Tumblr dashboard.
- JobLens: This revolutionary app makes uses the power of augmented reality and Nokia’s location technology to connect people with jobs in the offices and buildings around them. It is also integrated with Indeed, the world’s most comprehensive jobs search engine, and professional social network, LinkedIn.
- GoPro: Connect your Nokia Lumia 920 to a GoPro HERO3 or HERO2 camera to capture videos and photos, access and change the camera settings and view the results. The GoPro app will be available on all Windows Phone 8 devices, but exclusively on Lumia is the picture-in-picture feature, which overlays the Lumia camera view on top of the GoPro camera view.

It was also a good day for a couple of messaging apps. It was announced that WhatsApp will be coming soon to Dual-SIM Asha devices and enhanced features are on the way for the Windows Phone 8 version.
Messaging application, Line and its lovable sticker characters, also unveiled its first Asha app.
We’ll be taking a much closer look at all these apps in the weeks to come.
Supporting developers
As if unveiling these apps was not inspiring enough for the folks in attendance at the Nokia App Developer Conference, there was further encouragement for them too.
Nokia’s support for developers doesn’t just end with sharing its APIs – it goes much further than that.
There is high quality commercial support including help with operator billing agreements and monetisation tools like in-app purchasing. There is the Nokia Premium Developer Program, which offers tools and support to make the best possible apps, and there’s also Nokia Ad Exchange that makes it easy for developers to incorporate adverts in their apps.

Perhaps most exciting of all is that developing for Nokia ensures that you get access to cutting edge technology and unique hardware.
This was wonderfully demonstrated by Kevin Hague, Director of Tools and Technology on the Nokia Developer Experience team, who showed off some cool examples of 3D shells for the Nokia Lumia 820 that were created by developers after Nokia released the 3DK information.
The challenges
It wasn’t just all about support and help for developers – there were some challenges issued too!
It was announced that DVlup, which rewards Windows Phone coding challenges with points and prizes, was coming out of beta and coming to the UK.
Developers for Nokia Asha had their own challenge to create the best app for Asha Touch devices in four categories: music and entertainment; games; utilities and productivity; and news and information. Winners receive a cash prize.
Just last month, the Windows Phone Store had its one billionth download. Meanwhile, in the Nokia Store India Games and Inode have both just passed the 200m download mark. Clearly, there is no better time for developers to get involved and get a slice of the action.
