Xperia Z’s display unbeaten in #SonyMWC booth test

We had a cool thing at the booth this week – a demo that let you pit any handset against Xperia Z in a “display-off”.

It went a little something like this – two microscopes were set up, linked to larger screens. Xperia Z remained under one, with the microscope’s findings on the left monitor.

The second microscope was for any handset that fancied the challenge, with display sharpness visualised on the right hand screen – see the image below with an example.

Avoiding the temptation to fully geek out here, but essentially, the monitors visually depicted pixelation; greater the black area = less light efficiency = less sharpness.

As of now (the very end of MWC) – not one (nope, not one!) handset touched Xperia Z’s Full HD 1080p Reality Display!

Olympic champions use Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z for one-off routine

On Tuesday evening we attended a pretty special press event at the W Hotel in Barcelona that saw Spanish Olympic silver-medal-winning synchronised swimmers, Andrea Fuentes and Ona Carbonell use a certain set of props for their latest routine…

Andrea and Ona performed a slick set using Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z, dancing underwater to the tune of “Tango” – despite the chilly weather, the routine went without a hitch – as of course, Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z have the highest levels of water resistance of any smartphone and tablet respectively*.

Check out the video above and shots below!

*In compliance with IP55 and IP57, Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z are protected against the ingress of dust and are water resistant. Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone / tablet is (i) protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55; and/or (ii) can be kept under 1 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP 57.

Expanding the Wireless Charging experience

As was announced on Monday at MWC in Barcelona, we are continuing to bring wireless charging technology into more  products and accessories to give you greater choice and flexibility when it comes to personalising your phone and using the new technology.

How easy is it to bring this technology to consumers and into today’s products? We spoke with Tomi Penttilä, Head of Nokia Gear, to find out.

The first question a lot of people ask when they hear of wireless charging is why? Why do we need wireless charging, and why now? So we pitched that one at Tomi, too.

“There has to be a correct time for certain technologies. We’re now at a time where people’s way of thinking and technologies match – the user experience is now a great one.” explains Tomi.

“Also, because there’s now a global standard in wireless charging – Qi – we can offer a seamless experience to people all over the world, with many different devices.”

That seems to be one of the key things here; up until now different companies all used different technologies and standards. Because Qi is such an established standard, the likelihood of people being able to use the technology is greatly increased.

Wireless charging is one of those technologies that until you start using it, you don’t realise how useful and natural it is.

“Wireless charging is instinctive. Once people use it, they can’t see themselves going back to wires.”

Currently, Nokia has a whole raft of products on the market that utilises this technology. There’s the Nokia Wireless Charging Plate, Nokia Wireless Charging Pillow by Fatboy, Nokia Wireless Charging Stand, and the JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker; each offering wireless charging, with a slightly different experience.

Also, in addition to the wireless charging shells for the Nokia Lumia 820, we also introduced wireless charging covers for the Nokia Lumia 720 and a Nokia Wireless Charging Car Holder (CR-200).

“At the moment, people are able to charge wirelessly at home or at work. Now they can take that same experience into their car, thanks to the Nokia Wireless Charging Car Holder.” says Tomi.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Wireless Charging Car Holder incorporates an NFC-tag that can launch predefined apps, such as HERE Drive, on your Nokia Lumia smartphone when you slide the phone into the holder. Connecting everything together is all about making people’s lives easier, something that Nokia strives for.

You may think that wireless charging is an exclusive technology, something only available on high-end devices? This won’t be the case forever, tells Tomi:

“We will continue to produce wireless charging devices in the high-end. But, we’ve also got big aspirations with the same technology in the lower price points.”

Wireless charging isn’t just available in your home, office or car; Nokia has worked closely with partners to bring wireless charging to some of the most popular destinations that you visit. Take Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf for example, a number of their stores in the US are equipped with wireless charging at your table. That means when you’re recharging your caffeine levels, your Nokia Lumia can soak up some juice – wirelessly.

The same can be said about Virgin Atlantic. Users of the Clubhouse at London Heathrow can sit and relax while they wait to board their plane, knowing that their phone is charging wirelessly.

Are you charging wirelessly? Or, are you looking forward to seeing the technology available across more devices and accessories? Let us know, below.

The Nokia Lumia 520: Made in Beijing

Nokia Lumia 520

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Nokia Lumia 520 is the most affordable Windows Phone 8 powered Lumia that Nokia has released so far.

It offers tremendous value for money without compromising on its good looks and is still packed full of eye-grabbing features such as a 4-inch super sensitive touch screen, Nokia’s unique camera lenses such as Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot, as well as changeable shells.

In short, the Lumia 520 offers an innovative and rich smartphone experience at a highly competitive price point.

The product team behind the Nokia Lumia 520 wanted to create a smartphone for a mass market and, especially, for young people. Currently, there is no market bigger than the one in China and, in fact, the Lumia 520 was developed out of Nokia’s Beijing site.

We spoke to Mikko Kahlos, the Lumia 520’s lead product manager, about the team behind this smartphone, the difference it makes working in Asia and why he enjoyed making this device more than any other.

Mikko Kahlos

What was the guiding principle for the team behind the Nokia Lumia 520?

From the beginning it was important that we wanted to make it affordable. So what does that mean? We really kept that in our minds and stayed on target with everything that we did.

What are the major roles within the team?

We had a programme manager who was driving the overall R&D work and a technology manager who was ensuring that the quality was what we wanted.

I was the guardian of the consumers so that the market could see we had made a valuable smartphone that we could differentiate against the competition.

So it was us three who were running the show, but in reality this was a team effort.

Nokia Lumia 520

How did you approach the task?

One of the first things we did was create a ‘war room’ where we worked really intensively for the first few months so that we were constantly interacting. So when we made the first decisions everybody was there.

I feel that discussions are more effective when all people involved are next to each other and share a common goal. We were able to do an excellent job with clear guidance on where to go.

How strong was the Chinese influence?

Although the Lumia 520 is a global product, the team behind the phone kept it in mind that this was a smartphone made in China, for China.

Most of the people on our team are Chinese and also new to Nokia. What makes the group even more fascinating is that more than half of the team were making their first mobile phone ever, having worked previously with suppliers, other companies or elsewhere in Nokia.

They had a real challenger mindset and an opportunity to show what they can do. With guidance and support from the more experienced guys in the team, they did a great job!

Nokia Lumia 520

How proud are you of the Nokia Lumia 520, considering it’s such a new team?

I have done products for five years in Nokia and I have enjoyed this one the most. With this product, we have experienced the Asian culture, how people here work and how they succeed.

It is great to see people doing their absolute best and enjoying being part of something great.

This is the youngest and least experienced team ever in Nokia to have made a phone. We’ve been able to do it in the fastest time ever too. If you put all this together we have a lot to celebrate.

10 things you didn’t know about HERE maps

Lumia-520-HERE-Maps 2

Maps have been an integral part of human existence for millennia, by some estimates as long as eight thousand years. It’s only in the last decade, though, that they’ve gone truly digital. HERE, the world’s first location cloud service, is at the forefront of this cartographical revolution.

The HERE experience

Based on 25 years of mapping technology leadership, HERE, launched this week for Windows Phone 8, offers the only true offline maps experience, the largest indoor map inventory, and the largest public transport coverage of any location service to date. But that’s not all. To showcase some more amazing facts about the reach of Nokia’s mapping service, we’ve put together a funky infographic. Head south to find out more.

Infograph_Nokia_Conversations_v2_withLivesight-1

As you can see, HERE’s coverage is astounding. But don’t take our infographic for granted. Why not go to HERE and see for yourself.

Nokia and DreamWorks Animation: Telling magical new stories together

DreamWorks Animation

Special things tend to happen when the right pair is able to bring out the best in one another; think De Niro and Scorsese working together.

Reaching for similar heights of creative excellence is a new agreement between Nokia and DreamWorks Animation, which was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday.

This cooperation offers the tantalising possibility of a new mobile experience that is dynamic, immersive and genuinely thrilling. It’s not just about doing something well, but about doing something that’s never been done before.

Intrigued? Let’s start this story back at the very beginning.

Finding each other

Jim Mainard

Jim Mainard is DreamWorks Animation’s Head of Digital and New Business Development.

About 18 months ago, he started exploring the possibility of creating a mobile experience that would push the very limits of mobile hardware and operating systems.

“I was really looking to create a unique and immersive experience that would require deep collaboration with an innovative mobile platform. The Global Partner and App Development team at Nokia not only saw the vision, but improved upon it, and rallied the amazing talent at Nokia to bring it to life,” Jim told Conversations in a quiet room amidst the chaos and noise of Mobile World Congress.

“It’s important to differentiate our products in this very competitive mobile space.  Nokia’s platform provided just the right mix of capabilities including the HERE location assets.”

So, Nokia has great services and innovative hardware; DreamWorks Animation has beloved characters and movies with which families and kids love to engage – Shrek, Madagascar, Puss in Boots and How to Train Your Dragon, to name a few. Put all those elements together and something magical will surely happen…

The experience

Nokia at MWC 2013

Mainard and his colleague, Kelley Avery, DreamWorks Animation’s Head of Worldwide Franchise Strategy and Distribution, teased us with a few morsels of what we have to look forward to.

“Some of the strong elements, for at least the first service that we are building together, will encompass augmented reality with location-based services wrapped around one of our beloved franchises,” said Mainard.

Avery added:

“When people engage with our movies and our characters, they want to walk away from the theatre and live that experience. I think the one thing that really attracts us to Nokia is that through our new mobile platform, families can have a deeper experience with our brand and characters.

“They can create their own story every day and live their own adventure, which is what they want to do. They want to play the games, read the books and know everything about these characters.”

More details will be unveiled later in 2013 when the app becomes available. In the meantime, like in any good story – we’re pretty certain the ultimate reveal will be well worth the wait.

Nokia 105: thoughts from the web

Nokia-105_black-and-cyan

To put it bluntly, the Nokia 105 is an absolute bargain at only €15, making it the most affordable phone in Nokia’s current portfolio. Nokia has just raised the bar when it comes to providing entry-level handsets; it’s no wonder that people from all over the world are talking about it with such regard.

While we already described the benefits of the Nokia 105 in our announcement post on Monday, we thought we’d take a look around the web for other people’s views on this new low-priced handset.

msnNOW

When it comes to picking a new phone, we often assume that everybody wants one phone that does everything. We need to remember that this just isn’t the case, as msnNOW points out:

“Nokia hopes the phone will do well in countries where folks need phones to, you know, make calls, rather than post pictures of their babies on Facebook.”

Of course, there are other Nokia phones available that will let you post photos of your babies to Facebook, but the Nokia 105 isn’t it.

Nokia-105_torch

Francisco Jeronimo

IDC research director and analyst in the telecoms industry, Francisco Jeronimo, compares the price of the Nokia 105 to that of a takeaway dinner:

The Nokia 105 is cheaper then going to McDonalds. Shall Nokia start offering it with an Happy Meal? :) twitter.com/fjeronimo/stat…

— Francisco Jeronimo (@fjeronimo) February 25, 2013

While $15 would be an expensive burger, order them for the family and you’ve way exceeded the cost of this handset. As for offering the phone with a Happy Meal? Well, it’d certainly beat a plastic toy dinosaur.

Gizmag

Jonathan Fincher browses through some of the features of the Nokia 105 and spots one great feature for such a low-priced phone:

“For users in India, China, Indonesia, and Nigeria, the phone will also come with the Nokia Life suite of programs, which provide information and lessons via SMS on a variety of topics – like how to speak English.”

Not only do you have a phone for €15, you also have the means to learn another language. Those types of service alone can cost hundreds of Euros.

aitchbe-ellex

Another Twitter user sent a tweet out into the ether suggesting that the Nokia 105 become his or her next phone when attending Glastonbury:

I think I’ve figured out my next Glasto festifone: independent.co.uk/life-style/gad…

— aitchbe-ellex (@hblx) February 26, 2013

That’s a great idea. When it comes down to it, all you’ll need during, between and after each gig is a phone to call your mates to find out where they are. Plus, the torch will come in very handy when you’re stumbling around at night looking for your tent.

Daily Lounge

Daily Lounge’s Rob Floyd attended Mobile World Congress this year and during his small round up of devices had this to say about the Nokia 105:

“A month long battery life, basic functions, flashlight and FM radio features, and the low low price of around $15…could this be the perfect disaster preparedness phone?”

If the time comes and we all need to roam the deserted lands of our planet, will the Nokia 105 be there to save the day? Possibly, according to Rob. It’s also just as good in a non-apocalyptic era.
