iPhone to Xperia? No problem, with Xperia™ Transfer

Hi everyone,

We know the score – you want to ditch your iPhone, but it’s full of personal stuff – contacts, pictures, videos, messages, emails, etc…. and to switch all this onto a new phone is just a massive hassle right?

Wrong! We recently launched a new piece of software that does it all with just a few clicks through PC Companion or Bridge for Mac. It’s called Xperia™ Transfer and its sole purpose is to make it ridiculously easy to get all that personal stuff off your old iPhone and onto a shiny new Xperia smartphone.

Don’t believe us? Check out the video above from our customer support team to show exactly how simple it can be.

Blogging by email on the Nokia Asha 205

Nokia-asha-blogging-1

We’ve all got used to browsing the Internet on our mobile phones – checking the weather, keeping up to date on Facebook, the latest sports scores and more, but it doesn’t all have to be about consuming media. You can update blogs and create content for your websites using Nokia’s most affordable handsets, such as the Nokia Asha 205. I’ve been trying out blogging on the Asha – read on to find out how I’ve been getting on.

Blogging from your mobile phone is a great idea: it’s instant; you can do it wherever you go, and you don’t need a computer to keep your readers updated.

Asha owners may already have noticed that there aren’t any blogging apps in the Nokia store, but that doesn’t mean the end of your blogging fun. On the contrary, you can actually use your Asha’s emailing capabilities to blog, thanks to WordPress, Google’s Mail-to-Blogger and Tumblr’s Email Publishing.

Nokia-asha-blogging-big2

So how does it work, then? Where you’d traditionally use a web browser and CMS for adding content to your blog, posting by email does exactly what it says on the tin. You write what you want to post in an email, click send, and it appears on your blog.

This is especially useful for handsets with small screens, such as the Nokia Asha 205. When you’re writing your blog post, all you need to see is the text itself, with none of the screen wasted on the other details you’d normally find when using a CMS page.

I already had a WordPress blog, so this was the site I decided to try updating with my Nokia Asha 205. To start with, you’ll need to log into the WordPress CMS using a web browser, even if you intend to make all your further updates via email. Once you’ve logged in, head into your WordPress Dashboard, click on ‘Settings’, and ‘Writing’. There are a number of defaults you can set – such as the category your blog updates automatically appear in, but it’s then time to set up email support.

Blogging-by-asha-dashboard

There’s a section at the bottom of the page called ‘Post by Email’, with the text: “You can publish posts using emails with the Post by Email feature. To enable this visit your My Blogs page and create a secret address.”

Click the link to ‘My Blogs’, and then ‘Enable’ under the Post by Email column. When you press the button, WordPress will automatically generate a secure email account for you; remember this email address, as it’s the account you’ll need to send an email to when you want to update your blog.

Time to send an email

That’s it on the techy side of things; your WordPress blog should now be set up to handle blogging via email. When you want to post an update from your Nokia Asha, log into your email account, and create a new email with your newly generated WordPress address as the recipient.

blog

The subject field in your email will be the headline in your blog, and the email copy will become the main blog content. Once you hit send, head over to your blog and check out the new post. It may take a minute or two to appear, but I was amazed at how quickly the latest posts appeared on my blog.

Better yet, you won’t be restricted to text – you can take photographs on your Nokia Asha, attach them to an email, and as soon as the email hits the WordPress inbox the post and photographs will appear on your blog along with any other copy you add to the email.

It’s all incredibly easy to do, and it’s a great way of keeping your blog updated if you don’t have regular access to a computer. It also means you can keep your blog updated wherever you go, at any time, with the tap of a button. What’s not to like?

A week with the Nokia 301

Nokia 301

If there was a personal downside to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona it was that the Nokia demo areas were far too crowded and I couldn’t spend any quality time with the exciting new devices that were launched.

There’s only so much you can tell about a phone when you’re handling it in a shop or ‘sharing’ it with hundreds of other people eager to get their hands on it too.

Luckily for me I managed to smuggle a cyan Nokia 301 onto the plane and bring it back with me to London. I’ve now been using it, and exploring its features, for over a week and it’s made quite an impression on me.

Nokia 301

The Nokia Look

Before we look too deeply at the features of the Nokia 301, it’s worth dwelling on its fabulous looks. For a relatively affordable feature phone, it’s a stunning looking handset.

Strikingly, it shares much of the same design and colour language of the Nokia Lumia smartphones. It’s also made out of a premium-feeling material similar to that used for the Lumia devices and feels equally solid, durable and natural to hold.

There are some design touches too. The camera detailing on the back, with its metallic bezel, has strong echoes of the camera on the Nokia Lumia 800. The iconic Nokia numerical keypad sits flush below the screen, so the screen and the keys appear to be almost completely seamless.

I also love how the glossy finish on the keys and the screen contrasts with the matte finish on the rest of the phone.

SIM City

Regular readers will know that I’m a recent convert to the idea of having a Dual SIM phone. I’ve got the Easy Swap Dual SIM variant of the Nokia 301, although it is also available in a single SIM version.

Access to the second SIM on the Nokia 301 is through a slot on the side of the phone (the first SIM lives as normal underneath the battery). On the opposite side there’s another slot for the micro-SD card.

The extra SIM can be super useful for when you’re going on holiday, need to use two phone numbers without carrying around a second phone or just want to take advantage of deals from different operators.

Nokia 301

Camera-tastic

One of the real glories of the Nokia 301 is the 3.2-megapixel camera, which is packed with features to get your creative juices flowing.

This is a good example of Nokia’s imaging know-how trickling down from its flagship devices to feature phones. Among the camera’s features are.

  • Panorama (a first for a feature phone)
  • Self-portraits with voice guidance to make sure you’re in the frame!
  • Sequence shooting mode, which takes a burst of shots for you to pick the best one
  • Self-timer countdown before the camera takes a photo
  • Video camera
  • Photo sharing via Bluetooth, Nokia Slam, eBuddy or email
  • Photo editing and effects

As ever, the key is just how easy all these camera features are to use. My favourite is definitely the voice-guided self-portraits – such a simple idea, you wonder why no one had ever thought of this before!

We’ll be looking at the camera features on the Nokia 301 in much more detail in the weeks ahead.

Nokia 301

Feature packed feature phone

While the Nokia 105 was, rightly, getting a lot of plaudits at MWC for being such an affordable device, the Nokia 301 also offers you tremendous value for money.

It’s a 3.5G device with HD call quality and battery life in excess of 30 days on standby – 39 days in fact for the single SIM variant of the Nokia 301.

In addition, you can access social networks, like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter, send and receive emails, play games, download apps from the Nokia Store, listen to the radio (with a connected headset), play music and videos, personalise the home screen and access the Internet with the Nokia Xpress Browser.

Keep in mind that the Nokia 301 is priced at about 65 euros. For that sort of money, it’s pretty awesome that you get all those features in such a gorgeous looking phone.

16 ways Nokia Music’s rocking Austin from 10th to 14th March

solangeNOW2

Film buff, music lover or tech head? Then you’ll probably have heard of South by Southwest (SXSW). This eclectic festival of creativity, based in Austin, Texas, is unlike any other in the world. Billed as the largest music festival of its kind, it features over 2,500 official performers and bands playing in more than 100 venues. And if that wasn’t already enough to get your creativity all fired up, there’s SXSW Film, showcasing amazing new directing talent and SXSW Interactive for the hottest new creative technologies.

Nokia Music to SXSW’s ears

Needless to say Nokia Music will be there too to celebrate its free music streaming service, unlimited access to playlists and global catalogue of 22 million+ tracks. How? Simple by teaming up with RocNation, one of the world’s most versatile entertainment companies and, top venue, Raptor House. The Roc Nation at Raptor House Concert Series –presented by Nokia Music promises to be one of the highlights of SXSW 2012 with sixteen bands and two DJ’s dazzling audience for five days of music filled action.

Solange, so good

Kicking off on March 10th is the indie world’s new favourite R&B starlet, Solange Knowles.  With a unique bittersweet sound, singing in a voice that’s both understated and melancholic, her 80s-influenced soul is bound to be a fantastic start to the event.  What’s more, Nokia Music is partnering with Verizon Wireless to live stream her performance at verizoninsider.com. Besides Solange, these are some of the cool acts we’ll be shoegazing, grooving and shaking our booties too.

Rudimental

The Lone Bellow

The Brooklyn roots-rock group has caused quite a stir with its self-titled debut. They sing beautiful, impeccably harmonized folk-pop songs, which are fully of exuberance and heartfelt lyrics.

The Blank Tapes

The Blank Tapes is the moniker of Los Angeles / San Francisco based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Matt Adams. With rave reviews from Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and the LA times, The Blank Tapes playing harmony-laced classic-rock–tinted tunes sure to impress.

The Mowgli’s

The Mowgli’s are a Southern Californian band with a Southern Californian soul. The seven-piece started in a garage in the San Fernando Valley where many of them grew up. Fortunately for them, they’ve managed to get out of the garage and onto the radio and become a fixture on late night TV as well as a staple at this summer’s biggest music festivals.

Haim

Hailing from the San Fernando Valley, HAIM consists of, “Three sisters, and a mister” that has been shaking things up in the city of Los Angeles for the past four years. Their fusion of west-coast soft rock with the vocal rhythms of R&B recently helped them win the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll.

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister make debauchery and estrangement so glamorous. The songs are as catchy as a radio pop jam, but throw off the trappings of plastic pop and wrap you in fur and folk.

Just five of the super sixteen read to rock Austin for Nokia Music. Happily, to hear them, and the rest of the line up, you don’t have to jet to Austin. Just head on over to Nokia Music’s Facebook page between 11th – 14th March for a live stream of the performances. Alternatively, follow @NokiaMusic for updates of what promises to be a music-tastic five days.

Get to grips with Learn English on Nokia Life+

english465

During UNESCO’s Mobile Learning Week, a new service debuted on the Nokia Life+ web app called Learn English, which provides content to help people learn English on their mobile phone.

This exciting addition to the educational services on Nokia Life+ is the result of a new partnership between Nokia and the British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.

Nokia and the British Council co-developed the Learn English service for Nokia Life+ to benefit millions of young people who wish to learn or improve their spoken English, and in the process, improve their job or social prospects.

The global language

Learn English

In many developing countries having a good grasp of English is a crucial gateway to getting a job, advancing your career or unlocking opportunities in further education.

Apart from the vocational and educational benefits, the ability to communicate in English also makes it easier to engage with people from other countries, whether that is through social networks or meeting them face-to-face.

According to the British Council, 375 million people speak English as a first language; 750 million are believed to speak it as a foreign language and a quarter of the world’s population has a basic grasp of it.

With these statistics, it’s hugely beneficial to have some degree of competence in English to be a part of the global conversation.

Students learning English

Learn English

English learning in bite-size portions, delivered regularly and with the ease and immediacy of an instant message conversation, is the aim of the Learn English service.

This provides learning content across three levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. There are weekly themes that provide six pages of learning and conclude with a short quiz.

I’m a native English speaker but they say you never stop learning so I had a quick go at the Hard level.

The week’s theme for the Hard level was medicine, and there were four short messages that I had to read about the following topics:

  • Modern medicine
  • Medical terms
  • Future of medicine
  • Medical opinions

For example, on medical opinions, I read a transcript between two people discussing the merits and drawbacks of human cloning. My task at the end was to decide whose opinion I agreed with.

Learn English

Maybe, it was just because I was doing the hard level but I liked the fact that the quizzes required thought and discussion rather than simple yes/no questions.

In fact, when I switched over to Easy (you are free to do this whenever you like) the format remained the same but rather than a challenging topic such as human cloning, there was a discussion around the meaning behind John Lennon’s Imagine and you have to check that the two participants understand each other.

Learn English takes basic English a step further by emphasising comprehension and discourse. The aim is to encourage people to think critically about what they are reading and then take the learning outside into the ‘real’ world, rather than focussing too much on rules around English spelling and grammar.

Nokia Life+

Nokia Life

Learn English is available through Nokia Life+. The Nokia Life+ web app is supported across a range of Nokia handsets, including Series 40 phones and Asha Touch smartphones.

In addition to Learn English, other Nokia Life+ services include Live Healthy, for advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and information on a wide-range of health topics, and Life Skills, which helps young people to develop their inter-personal skills and manage their personal finances.

Learn English is a free service on Nokia Life+ although operator data charges may apply. However, Nokia Life+ works in tandem with the Nokia Xpress Browser, which compresses your data by up to 90%, so it also helps you to save money.

The Learn English service is now available in 18 markets including India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh, South Africa, Malaysia, Kenya, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Singapore, the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana.
