New protective shell for the Nokia Lumia 620

Creating the perfect phone to meet the needs of everybody is a challenge, but one that’s worth taking. That’s why Nokia has created a protective shell for the Lumia 620, to shield your phone in many environments.
Rather than make the typical clip-on case, or carry pouch to put your phone into, the Nokia Lumia 620 protective shell (CC-3061) replaces the existing back cover:
“The Nokia Lumia 620 is such a beautiful device, we wanted to honour the design of the phone while maintaining the same shape and design that fits perfectly in the hand.”
Tells Harri Vuolle, Lumia Product Manager at Nokia.
While maintaining the beautiful look of the device from the outside, this new shell has been constructed to look after the inside of the phone, too.
With IP54 certification, the protective shell has been certified to improve protection against dust and splashes of water. For anyone needing or just wanting extra shield for their phone, this replaceable shell is a one to have.

Harri explains more:
“The protective shell improves the dust and splash protection. The gaps between the camera window and the shell as well as the display and the shell are better sealed, and the mesh that covers the loudspeaker is denser, making it harder for water or dust to get in.”
Just like the other Nokia Lumia 620 replaceable shells, the protective shell has been cast using a dual-shot process. The interior shell is created using a polycarbonate that’s fairly rigid, and the exterior is made of TPSiV, which is more flexible, rubber-like material.

The combination of both of these materials provides a more flexible plastic; one that’s solid enough to take the forces that your phone may be subjected to, but soft and elastic enough to provide some give when it’s needed.
Having a softer exterior also provides a great grip in the hand, it’s almost ‘sticky’ as it provides a certain amount of resistance – it feels almost like a natural material.
When the protective shell is attached to the Lumia 620, the rubber-like material wraps around the front slightly, more so than the non-protective shell. This raised ‘lip’ protects the screen more if phone is accidentally dropped.
“While the protective shell does not make your Lumia 620 indestructible or 100% waterproof, it’s ideal for people who enjoy active lifestyle where working up a sweat, getting caught up in a rain or dropping the phone can be a regular occurrence. It’s also suits people who want to use their smartphone at work, even if it’s a dusty, damp environment.” Harri explains.
It’s also just good protection for the general day-to-day mishaps, and because it replaces the existing shell you don’t sacrifice any of the beautiful design.
Available in grey with grey exterior and yellow interior, you’ll be able to purchase the shell at the end of this month, depending on the market. The recommended retail price is around 25 EUR.

Get your caffeine fix with exclusive Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf app
Anyone who knows me well knows that I am the classic “coffee achiever”. I have been a coffee drinker since my high school days. I even had the opportunity to pick and roast my own coffee beans once while spending a summer in Mexico. It’s fair to say that when it comes to coffee, I can’t live without it.
- Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
- Scan the QR code
- Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
- Install the app from the Windows Phone Store
So when I was asked to have a look at the new Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) app for use on Nokia Lumia Windows Phones, I practically spilled my coffee jumping at the chance. This app is exclusive to Windows Phone through the end of May, and it places the entire CBTL experience in the palm of your hand.
For those who don’t know, CBTL is a specialty coffee – and tea – retailer with locations across the United States and in select locations in other countries. If you need a quick caffeine fix, the app includes a page that highlights the CBTL locations that are closest to you – as long as you let the app know your current location.
Your coffee concierge
When you select one of the locations, you can quickly see what services and amenities are available at that specific store – such as in-store Wi-Fi, whether they accept gift cards, if they have drive-thru or catering to go, as well as something called the “Frozen Swirl”.
You can quickly find walking or driving directions using Nokia HERE and also complete your Foursquare check-in at your chosen CBTL shop with a single click.
From the coffee bean page of the app, the first item you will see is the “in-store playlist” which is directly linked to the Nokia Music app, and lets you experience the music being played in CBTL locations – it’s like a private radio station that matches your coffee-drinking mood.
There’s much more to explore within the app. In fact, the home screen for the app is called “explore”. Here you will find all CBTL products, see their latest seasonal offerings (a Chai Tea Cappuccino anyone?), and learn about their Caring Cup program which supports charities and foundations.
Create your dream coffee drink
And of course, this is where you will find the drinks – there are so many kinds of coffee drinks – ranging from hot to iced, as well as ice blended varieties. Simply click on the “drinks” icon to get started customizing your drink.
Say you want a Macchiato … Start by picking the size, followed by how much coffee you want in the drink, if it will have milk, flavoring powders, regular or decaf, and any extras, like chocolate drizzle or whipped cream. Click the check mark icon to finish making your virtual drink, and then you can give it a nickname that you will remember and save it to your favorites for future reference.
You can share your drink creation via your social networks, or with a nearby friend using NFC by tapping your phone to another compatible device.
Oh, and there’s one more thing that is likely to keep you coming back for more from the CBTL app … Within the drink section, you will notice a lock icon at the bottom of the screen. Tap on it and see a list of “secret drinks” with oh-so-cool names like the “Dirty Chai Latte” or the “Zebra Hot Chocolate”.
Want to know what is inside those drinks? You will have to choose the right drink and its specific customization to unlock the mystery! Happy hunting.
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf app is free to download from the Windows Phone Store.

Try out Play To on your WP8 Nokia Lumia

Nokia’s media sharing application, Play To, is now available for your Nokia Lumia smartphone running on Windows Phone 8.
It’s still just a beta release but it has all the same functionality that the Play To application offers for Lumia devices on Windows Phone 7.

This means you can now share media content from your smartphone to other DLNA capable devices that are connected to the same wireless network.
For example, you can stream photos, music or videos from your Nokia Lumia to a DLNA-enabled TV. You don’t need any cables or go through a complicated connection procedure.
Play To can also work with Windows Media Player on your PC.
From one screen to another
We tried Play To on a Nokia Lumia 800 last year and it was mightily impressive. It was quick to set up and easy to use. What you see or hear on your Lumia smartphone is mirrored on the DLNA-enabled player.
Quite often you only ever see your photos or videos on your smartphone display, so it has real impact when you see them on a large TV screen.

Streaming a music or video works brilliantly too and is a great way of sharing content from your smartphone with friends in the same room.
You don’t have to pass your device to everyone in turn or get everyone to crowd around for a peak of the action.
Play To for WP8
This version of Play To will work on all Nokia Lumia devices running on Windows Phone 8. Prior, to installing Play To on your device it is recommended that you check that your smartphone is running the latest software.
You can download and install Play To from Nokia Betalabs and don’t forget to leave your feedback for the team.

Burton app arrives on Lumia
There aren’t many names that are as synonymous with winter sports as Burton. The outdoor apparel and equipment company is so engrained in the snowboarding world that it’s recognized around the globe.
- Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
- Scan the QR code
- Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
- Install the application from the Windows Phone Store
As we looked to build a snowboarding specific app for Nokia Lumia, Burton was the perfect partner to team with to make it a reality. There are existing apps that give you weather, GPS tracking and resort info in individual applications, but we wanted to create an app that would encompass all of these needs.
Burton for Nokia Lumia blends augmented reality, ride tracking, enhanced video recording and resort information to bring you a fun way to find your perfect ride and capture the memory as it happens.
Exclusive resort information
Want to scope out a resort before making the trek up there? With the Burton app, you can get detailed resort information and live weather conditions, web cam views and even augmented reality views of each of the stores.
Point your phone and explore
If you happen to be going to Burton Stash Parks in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, you’re in for a treat. There is an augmented reality feature that lets you view runs and features of the mountain and it’s perfect for scoping out your ride ahead of time or in the moment.
Capture, relive and share
Have you discovered an amazing move or trick that you just have to share with your friends? It’s a good thing you have your Lumia in your pocket, because the Burton app uses enhanced video features to let you shoot your magic moment on the slopes. The photos and videos will be geocoded so you’re able capture your exact location when shooting images and video.
Track your friends and your rides
Are you wondering where your friends are on the mountain? Just whip out the Burton app and find your buddies and other boarders while on the mountain.
Also, sometimes it’s hard to remember all the epic rides you experience over the course of a multi-month ski season. Rely upon Day Tracker to track your rides day-by-day throughout the season to keep tabs on all your rides and how you’ve progressed throughout the season.
Rock while you ride
The perfect day on the mountain isn’t complete without some awesome music to listen to while you complete your ride. Burton and Nokia Music have teamed up for customized fast-paced playlists to match your tempo while shredding down the mountain.
Finally, the application also lets you find your nearest Burton shop for all your gear needs and lets you to send captured video straight to Facebook.

EA Games Gift: Pick of the 40 free games part two

I’ve spent far too long playing games on my Nokia Asha 205 over the past month. The games are all part of the EA Games Gift that come with most Asha handsets, and there are 40 titles to choose from. Once you’ve downloaded them, they’re yours to keep forever. Out of all the games on offer, 10 stood out for me, and you can check out the first five of my favourites here.
That still leaves another five games though. All of the titles are part of the EA Games Gift, saving Nokia owners anywhere up to £4 per app, and I was amazed at the quality on offer. Read on to find out what else makes the list alongside the likes of FIFA 12 and Worms 2010.
Bejeweled
If you like Tetris, there’s a huge chance you’ll love Bejeweled too. Another fast-paced puzzle game, Bejeweled is a title that puts gameplay above all else, and once I’d picked it up for a few photographs, I found that I was still playing it for ‘just another five minutes’ half an hour later!
Monopoly Here and Now
Board games don’t always translate well into digital titles, but there’s a lot of fun to be had from Monopoly Here and Now. Everything you’ve come to expect from the traditional game is present and correct, but prices and locations have been brought up to date (it’s a bit of a shock to be forking out £1m in fees!), and there are lots of nice animations to jazz the game up. As always though, it’s the satisfying feeling of conning your rival out of money that makes Monopoly entertaining, and it’s just as much fun on an Asha 205 as it is on the original board game.
The Sims 2 Castaway
The Sims has proved incredibly popular whatever the platform, and it’s difficult to imagine that it’ll be any different on the Nokia Asha. As the title suggests, this time your sim is castaway on an island, and the game is every bit as good as it’s always been. You can collect items, explore, meet other sims and your character will tell you when they’re hungry, need sleep or have other desires. It’s fun, it looks great and it’s well worth downloading for your Asha.
Medal of Honor
The games on offer from EA aren’t just restricted to sports or puzzle games either, with plenty of action titles on offer. Medal of Honor stood out for me, where you’re in charge of a soldier deployed to Afghanistan. The action is fast-paced, the graphics are brilliant considering the small display, and Medal of Honor is another great game.
Need for Speed The Run
As a driving game Need for Speed The Run won’t appeal to everybody, and it’s not quite as impressive as some of the other titles here. I’m a petrolhead through-and-through though, so it was always going to be on my list, and it’s a fun way of passing the time.
Have you claimed your free EA Games Gift on your Asha? What are your favourite games?

5 mobile movie festivals making waves
Film festivals have been around for almost as long as films themselves. The first biggie was held in Venice in 1932, Cannes kicked off in 1946, while the longest continually running festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival started a year later. But times they are a changing and with new technology, new gatherings of film devotees and filmmakers are springing up all the time. One new genre making waves is mobile movies. Here’s five festivals celebrating this brave new world.
Tribeca Festival – New York, USA, 17-28th April
A new category on Tribeca’s award circuit celebrates narratives created by talented transmedia artists. The remit? To reward ‘creators who employ an innovative, interactive, web-based or multi-platform approach to story creation.’ Two years ago The Tribeca Film Institute and Ford Foundation’s JustFilms set up a fund of $750,000 to support non-traditional filmmaking, such as micro-blogging and short films. Robert di Niro helped found the institute – so it has quite a pedigree.
New Media Film Festival -LA, USA, 11-12th June
More buzz than a bucketful of bees, New Media is a dynamic and fun festival begun by the very personable Susan Johnston. She talks about the platform for film as a ‘creative sandbox.’ There is also a specific category for ‘Mobile/Tablet’ entries– audiovisual works made on a mobile phone, which can be as short as 30 seconds. They even offer distribution to some of the films that are not accepted into the festival.
Oska Bright Film Festival – Brighton, UK, 17-19th November
Filmmaking, the joy of expression and creativity, is for everyone. Nowhere is this more evident than at Oska Bright. Dedicated to anyone with a learning disability and now accepting entries worldwide– it celebrates the art of the short film and encourages five minute masterpieces. They even raised money to take screenings ‘on the road’ and encourage entrants to use art, videos and mobile technology to mix and match to perfection.
Olleh International Smartphone Film Festival, 17-20th April
This one is as specific as it sounds. When it began in 2011, the festival received 470 films, all created on smartphones. Many were from teenagers. This year they have divided the competition into three sections – teens, local and international entries. Eleven prizes award ingenuity and excellence. Festival Director Lee Jun-ik says ‘The message that we want to spread with this festival is to have a dream.’
The Bridport Prize’s flash film competition – Sixty second stories, 10-14th April
A competition that challenges filmmakers to adapt existing stories to the screen, in a minute or less. The only stipulation is that the source must be literary and all entrants are under 25. Joe Dunthorne, the author of Submarine, which was adapted into a film of the same name, is curating – ‘I’ve always been into film as much as books so I’m happy for the opportunity to weld my interests together.’
The days of filmmaking being for the rich or the well-connected, now seem archaic. The only connections you need are a fully charged ‘phone and a brain sparking ideas. If this sound like you, why not enter our Nokia Music Short Film Competition? Launched in association with Sundance London, the brief is simple: To showcase the amazing, the unusual and the unknown music happening underground around the world.
A fantastic festival of film fun
Filmmakers need to simply upload a short 15 to 60 secs video trailer by March 14th visualizing the underground music scene in their chosen city. Think of this trailer as an audition, which showcases your concept. If your idea is chosen, you’ll receive two Nokia Lumia 920s and a $5,000 budget to shoot your film. What’s more, both films are guaranteed a special screening at the Sundance London Film & Music Festival (2013) in April, and one lucky grand prizewinner will walk away with $5,000 and a Nokia Lumia 920.
Think you’ve got what it takes to make your mark in mobile movies? Then get filming!
