As Christmas is approaching and people are checking their (smart) watches wondering when it’s acceptable to head off to town for Christmas shopping, we’re bringing you the latest from this week in Sony.
Speaking of Christmas, our developer elves have been busy… Over in the US, we introduced the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition running on KitKat (Android 4.4).
And they’ve also been busy cooking up a treat in the form of a WALKMAN app update that brings you enhanced playlist functionality, playlist sharing functions, 30 second previews in Music Unlimited’s library, and more.
Fancy the new BMW M4 Coupe for Christmas but don’t quite have the budget? No worries! The PlayStation team has been working with the talented people at BMW and as of this week you can test drive the shiny beast in Gran Turismo 6.
From speedy sports cars to Spidey… The Sony Pictures team released the official trailer for The Amazing Spiderman 2 this week, showing Spidey facing an overcharged villain whilst slamming into buildings and casually lifting vehicles. It’s… well… Amazing.
Katherine and the team behind this week’s episode of The Take Out talk about gravity gaming in Naught 2 and how American musician Lovett used 37 directors to make the music video for All the Time.
And finally… If you’ve been slacking and not done your Christmas shopping yet, here’s a list of our top six picks for this holiday season. You’re welcome.
That’s all, enjoy the weekend.

We’ve been working to blend our Sony Xperia software with Google’s Jelly Bean release to create some cool user experiences (if we say so ourselves) – in addition to a few performance tweaks here & there, some of the functionality you can look forward to includes:
- Google’s Android 4.3; Jelly Bean as standard – bringing Project Butter performance & UI optimisation and a smoother graphical experience
- Launched with Xperia Z1, we’re now bringing Sony’s Smart Social Camera to Xperia Z Ultra – our signature camera experience, that lets you download, access and enjoy “Xperia camera apps” directly from within the viewfinder
- We’re also uplifting Sony’s entire native app portfolio to the latest versions – bringing tweaked / improved / current experiences for (to name but a few): Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, Sony Select and…
- Sony’s Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration* - a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience – Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI, offering seamless access to both local and cloud content
- The launch of our unique custom interface experience: “Xperia Themes”, with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select – more on this soon…
- The latest Android security enhancements, matched with Sony’s mobile enterprise solution: Xperia in Business

French photographer Juliette Martin saw photography as a means and opportunity to travel. She tells us that she finds most of her inspiration on the road and uses her photography to reach out to others to share and enrich her experiences. Here she talks about how her “Best Work” shot above was created and her experience of using Xperia Z1.

1. Can you talk us through this shot?
I was able to take this photo thanks to the quality of the sensor in low light. I set up the shot at the end of an evening when I was walking in Montmartre. I crossed “La place du Tertre” when I saw a painter; He was alone, under a tree faintly lit by a lamp post. It was such a beautiful setting and because Z1 can take pictures quickly and easily I was able to capture this unique, in-the-moment shot.
2. How did Z1 deal with the high contrast areas in the picture, what settings did you use to produce the atmospheric lighting effect?
Z1 is very well equipped with editing software. In this case, I changed the contrast settings to soften the image so you can see details even in very dark areas. I used Pixlr Express to produce the atmospheric lighting effect with the “too old” filter followed by the desaturation option.
3. The shot looks like there’s very little light – how did you go about framing the photo to make the light work so well?
The large display makes it easy to manage the framing, which is particularly useful for night scenes.
4. Are there any features on Z1 that particularly impressed / surprised you?
I was very surprised by the editing software. It’s very accurate and efficient and offers so many choices for high-quality results. The filter options are cool too, so there are endless possibilities.
5. What advice would you give to journalists who are reviewing the camera? How would you suggest they could set up some quick shots that really stretch its capabilities?
The Z1 camera is great fun to use - it is very intuitive and can be used by anyone. It has so many technical features, so professionals will really enjoy using it too. There’s no need for a computer as pictures can be edited directly on the phone; you can be anywhere without a computer and you’ll still be able to share professional pictures.

We’re nearly there folks. Just a few days to go until Christmas. Here’s hoping you receive all the gadgets, games and great gifts that you’ve asked for. Now, to get you prepped for all the Sony goodies you’ll no doubt collect, here’s what has been going on in our world this week.
First off, Eoghan et al. over at The Take Out give you a chance to win a Xperia Z1 this week. They also talk about The Amazing Spiderman 2 (refusing to give too much detail away… you’ll just have to wait ‘til next year) and get a bit jealous of Julian Casablanca’s fashion sense (apparently he’s rocking scarves covering interesting places) in Daft Punk’s latest music video for “Instant Crush.”
Next, PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile has now expanded into 18 countries with new additions including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand. If you haven’t already downloaded the app, click here.
A laptop skin is a great way to customize your tech. Sony got together with designer Simone Legno to skin a VAIO Fit in his incredible tokidoki characters.
Watch the video as he gives us an exclusive look at his character brainstorm and creative process, explaining how he uses both hand drawings and technology to bring his designs to life. At the end of the film you’ll see one seriously well-dressed laptop.

Have you forgotten what summer looks like? A stunning photograph of summer daisies taken by an amateur photographer using a Sony Bridge camera will be the July image in the BBC Countryfile Calendar. The image, captured by David Jackson from Kendal in the UK, was chosen from 57,000 entries. Bring back the sunshine we say.
Want to know what was the best music of 2013? Check out the Music Unlimited staff picks over at the Sony Entertainment Network Blog. Start here and here to find amazing new music from the likes of Matt Pond, Mikal Cronin, Air Review, Hey Marseilles and much, much more.
And if that’s still not enough music for you, the guys at Legacy Recordings have been going through the Sony Music archives to create a YouTube playlist of all your favourite Christmas classics, from Maria to Whitney to the Ronettes. You can even watch a warming Yule Log fire as you gift your ears. Festive fantastic.
And that’s it…
Have an incredible Christmas. We’ll be back with lots more Sony news in the New Year.

It’s almost the end of the year which means it’s almost the end of our blog series looking at the app experiences available on SmartWatch 2. Indeed, this is the fourth and final post.
So now you know that SmartWatch 2 lets you be a socialite, a fitness freak and a master of everything in everyday life. But SmartWatch 2 also means business…
Presentation Pal
Oh, dread… you’re in a business meeting and you have to make a presentation from your laptop. The room isn’t set-up to push the slides remotely so you’re left standing in front of your computer and not in front of the room like a gold standard speaker.
Well worry no more. With Presentation Pal you can run your presentation remotely from SmartWatch 2 using Bluetooth connectivity. Just put the presentation on your handset and flick through the slides from your wrist. Easy.
SmartWatch PDF Reader
So many business documents come through as PDFs, and this little app is extra user friendly as it comes with a useful hassle free zoom function. SmartWatch PDF Reader comes with a small price tag but is well worth the investment.
Calendar Smart Extension
We have all been there; running to a meeting you remembered was happening five minutes after it started! With Calendar Smart Extension for SmartWatch this doesn’t need to happen. Like a virtual PA, you can view your meetings, reminders and any other important items anywhere, at any time.
Email Smart Extension
Receive, read and reply to messages on the run, on the bus or in bed. There is now no excuse for colleagues not to be able to get a hold of you.
Explorer Pro
This is a handy little file manager/folder explorer for SmartWatch 2. Again, it has a small cost but it’s worth it so you can surf through your folders and find the important documents that you need.
So that’s it for this year! All the SmartWatch 2 apps info you need to get you through Christmas and beyond.
One more thing before we go… SmartWatch 2 has just picked up Best Android Smartwatch of the year from Android Headlines. What a great note to end on.
Make sure you watch (no pun intended) out for even more new and exciting apps to be announced for SmartWatch 2 in the New Year.
Have a great one.

As we approach the end of 2013 we enter a rare period for companies like us, a few days where it’s equally appropriate to look back as it is to keep our focus on the future, and from our perspective, 2013 has been an incredible year.
We began with the announcement of Xperia Z at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show. It was a product that would set the tone for months to come and from a design perspective it was revolutionary. The water resistance design feature resonated with both the media and customers in a way that even we had not anticipated and before long all sorts of crazy videos were circulating the internet showing exactly what you could do with a water resistant smartphone. Equally importantly, Xperia Z represented our first words spoken in a new design language that would go on to underpin all our 2013 phones. Our OmniBalance design is, and will remain, a key element of what makes our products special.
Towards the end of January we announced Xperia Tablet Z in Japan and by Mobile World Congress in Barcelona we were able to confirm a global roll out. There’s no doubt, Xperia Tablet Z is the best tablet we’ve ever built, but EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) went one further and gave it their tablet of the year award.
In May we built out our Xperia range with Xperia ZR, a smartphone designed to bring signature Sony experiences to a wider audience at a more affordable price point. Building on the strength of reaction to Xperia Z’s water resistance, Xperia ZR was our first IP58 smartphone and once again the message coming back from consumers was clear. They loved being able to text in the rain and listen to music by the pool, safe in the knowledge that they weren’t risking damage to their smartphone.
As summer broke we announced Xperia Z Ultra at Shanghai’s Mobile Asia Expo, our first foray into the super large smartphone segment, and another great success. It was the slimmest, lightest phone of its kind and, with amazing advances in technology like the ability for users to use any pencil as a stylus, it was an enormous achievement, a fact which clearly wasn’t lost on Google, with whom we launched a Google Play Edition in December.
We spent most of the summer bringing these products to market and gearing up for our last major smartphone announcement of the year. In September we launched Xperia Z1. Where Xperia Z was a revolution in design, Z1 was a revolution in technology. Through our work with Sony’s camera experts, we were able to create a camera phone that truly blurs the lines between mobile phones and compact cameras, whilst at the same time, new technologies in processors, screens, audio and media integration all came together to produce a smartphone that is simply brilliant. It is our strongest selling smartphone to date and will continue as our flagship into 2014.
2013 was also the year that saw the mainstream acknowledgment that the smart wearables category was beginning to represent a serious opportunity. This may not have been news to us, (we’ve been producing smart watches since 2007) but it was certainly welcome. Our second generation SmartWatch 2 has exceeded our expectations in terms of sales and has been praised by media for the way it solves actual consumer problems. This is all thanks to feedback from you, and we are grateful for it. We are leaders in this space and there will be a lot to talk about in 2014.
Which brings me onto the whole point of this post, which is to say thank you. More than 8 million of you visited this blog during 2013 and countless others have been engaging with us through social media and in our customer forums. You make our products what they are, through your feedback, your engagement with us as a brand, and with our products. We’re listening, we take you seriously, and we are grateful.
2014 is going to be an incredible year, we’ve got some truly exciting products coming up, new form factors to explore and more from our wearables team, so stay tuned and keep talking to us.
Have a very happy new year.
