Talking T3 with Lead Designer Ying Shao

Last week we caught up with Ying Shao, lead designer behind the recently announced XperiaTM T3, to talk fashion, tech, and the challenges posed by re-inventing the premium mid-tier phone.

1.Lovely to meet you Ying! So tell us a bit about yourself and your background. What was your role in the design of Xperia T3?

I’m one of the senior Industrial Designers at Sony Mobile and was lead designer on Xperia T3. It’s been my life, right from the conceptual stage all the way to creation of the first prototypes and the tweaks to the final product. T3 is like my baby!

Ying-profile image2. What were you working on before Xperia T3 and how did it affect the work you put into this project?

I’ve been working in the design and mobile industry for over ten years so I’ve been lucky enough to do an awful lot. During my time at Sony I’ve worked on Xperia Tipo, Xperio Miro, Live With Walkman and WT8i, and there’s always been a consistent theme throughout. Sony has a very clear and distinct design strategy that enables a level of consistency even when fresh elements and technologies are added to our products. Each product shares Sony’s DNA but also has its own identity, which you can definitely see – both in my early stuff with Xperia Tipo and with the new T3. Sony encourages innovation in their designers to ensure a unique edge and identity while making the most of new tech.

3. Can you tell us about some of the design challenges involved when creating Xperia T3?T3 Side Image

When designing T3 our mantra was ‘mirror and merge with the world around you’. We opted for stainless steel for the hardware instead of aluminium, not only because of the premium texture of the metal, but also because of the sharp reflective nature of stainless steel. No matter where you put the phone it will merge into the environment, almost becoming a part of it. Deciding which material to use for T3 presented us with a challenge; we’d never used stainless steel on our products before and compared with aluminium, it’s a lot harder, both in terms of touch and how to manipulate it. But at just 7mm it is also one of the slimmest smartphones on the market and a combination of the material, colour and footprint – as well as the curve on the back of the phone – make Xperia T3 perfect for blending in to its surroundings.

4. What makes Xperia T3 stand out?

T3 has kept the design language of other Xperia devices in terms of its premium look and feel, but stands out with its matte back finish and shape. It is slim, yet robust and really feels great in the hand. Although similar to other Xperia models, T3 targets consumers who are just as concerned with fashion as they are with function. The finish of the matte stainless material not only displays the quality of the phone, but also highlights the slimness of the shape.

6_Xperia_T3_Top5. What do you think are the 3 most important things to consider in design?

For me the three most important things to consider are function, fashion and emotive reaction. It is important for a smartphone, or any consumer device to connect with the user and understand their needs.

6. What external influences inspired the design of T3?

There is always a high demand for the design work we do at Sony, so we are always searching for new materials and new technology and looking at developments in fashion as well as tech. The challenge comes when we have to incorporate these new technologies and design trends with the existing Sony ecosystem and visual identity. The stainless steel antenna that wraps around the body of Xperia T3 is a great example of this, a new technology merging with existing products.

7. What’s your favourite piece of technology from your childhood?

My first Sony WALKMAN™! It was pink and a birthday gift from my father. I didn’t go anywhere without it!

8. Who’s your favourite designer?

During my student life I was really inspired by Harmut Esslinger, the founder of Frog [formally Frog Design]. I also love seeing what new and young designers get up to; it really shakes up the business and keeps us on our toes.

Interactive walls and the travelling football pitches

We’re still in denial that the 2014 FIFA World CupTM is actually over. We’ve had to hand the remote back to our families, flatmates and other halves, but we can all agree that it was one of best World Cup’s ever.

Delivering 150,000 minutes of spectacular HD and 4K footage from all across Brazil, directly to you, that’s the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back 12 times, or so we’re told. We hope you guys enjoyed the action as much as we did.

Fortunately, our football frenzy hasn’t completely ended. Throughout the 2014 FIFA World CupTM we teamed up with streetfootballworld to launch ‘Dream Goal 2014’.  The programme will be running until 2015 and will be bringing twenty-five portable football stadiums to children in South America, Africa and other regions across the world.

Portable stadium

At the workshops, the young players will learn the importance of leadership and gender equality through the beautiful game of football. We’ll carry on supporting the project for a whole year and we hope to see more than 30,000 children having the time of their lives. We set up three of these stadiums in the heart of Rio de Janeiro and now we’re working with streetworldfootball to bring these fun football workshops to as many children as we can.

Moving on from football, we met up with the incredibly talented Sophie Eggleton this week.  The blogger, fashion editor, photographer, journalist, artist (and that’s but a few of her titles…) told us all about how she’s been getting on with her Xperia Z1 Compact. Make sure you check it out – her sketches are stunning!

Oh, and if any of you were lucky enough to be in Leicester Square for a VIP screening of Kasabian’s Summer Solstice gig you would have seen the World’s First Digital Red Carpet. It featured an interactive wall of Xperia Z2 Tablets – Not your typical bricks and mortar!

Lastly, we’ve just launched a major refresh of our Music Unlimited application for lucky PS4 owners. Better performance, easier navigation and improved music discovery = finding your favourite tracks so much quicker. Check out the new UI below. So if you’ve got that Friday feeling don’t be shy, turn it up!

That’s all from us, have a good one.

Meet Sophie Eggleton – the blogger, fashion editor, photographer, journalist, artist etc…

We’re always keen to meet people who are Xperia fans and use our smartphones to capture their lives in cool and creative ways.

Sophie Eggleton somehow finds time to be a music journalist, stylist, fashion editor, designer, artist, blogger and vlogger. She’s also lovely. We wanted to catch up with her to see what it is she does and how she’s been getting on with her Xperia Z1 Compact.

1AR_EFFECT_19700219032856. So for all our readers out there, what do you do Sophie, and where do you do it?

So, currently I am Fashion and Music Editor at Culture Compass. I freelance for other websites so I am often covering events, or doing interviews in London for them too. The rest of the time I work through my artwork commissions – these vary from rock band merchandise to fashion designs. That’s really my passion; I love sketching. I’ve also started vlogging but it is very early days….

2. Looking at your Instagram and Twitter feeds I can imagine a lot of people are envious of what you do, how did you get in to it?

It is not something I planned actually. I graduated with a First in Fine Art and as you can imagine, I was confused about how to translate that into a paying career. I had always had a regular stack of fashion glossies and loved gazing over the editorials, so I thought that using my creativity within fashion could be an interesting path to take. As soon as I finished uni I sorted out some internships including Eve, Glamour, Elle, First and Vogue – This lead to styling assisting work at the likes of NME, Easy Living and 125. I was still hankering after more creativity so I decided to try a different combination of fashion and art by becoming an artwork assistant at Alexander McQueen, which gave me a chance to do more sketching. I also started writing for websites and blogging, which eventually lead to interviewing musicians, artists and other creatives. Eventually this led to on camera work, which now takes up the majority of my time. Blogging and Vlogging require you to be really proactive so I am often looking for new projects.

3. You go to a lot of fashion shows and get to meet some really cool people. Do you have a favourite interview or event that you’ve been to?
There was a Rimmel London event I was invited to a few years ago which was an amazing party at Battersea Power station. I got to see Kate Moss in the flesh that night. Sometimes it is odd to be up close to someone so iconic who you’ve studied in magazines for so many years. The opening of a Queen exhibition in London a little while ago was a surreal night too. I somehow accidentally got locked in a room with Jessie J and all members of the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is my hero, so I had to go and talk to him. Sadly I turned into the dullest person on earth. Oh well!

Skull4. Fashion is obviously a very important part of your life. How do you think this crosses over in to the tech space?

Well it crosses over more and more every day. Not only in the way I consume and give out information about style, but by using apps to help me shop, sell and make fashion decisions. The fashion industry is also constantly coming up with new technologies in terms of manufacturing, the materials they use and their design processes. I was actually using the Kaleidoscope tool in the Creative Effects app on my Z1 Compact the other day and the outcomes looked like wonderful print designs. Digital prints on clothing has been a big trend for the last few years – if camera technology is good enough I don’t see why we can’t use images captured using our phones for this from now on. The fact that bloggers, and Video bloggers from YouTube are filling up the seats at fashion shows also says a lot about how technology is changing fashion.

5. How are you getting on with Xperia Z1 Compact? Some of the pictures you’ve taken are great!

I have a confession. I am not the best at adapting to new technology. I held on to my first brick of a phone for as long as possible – it was held together by hair bands and Sellotape. The fact that I have got used to this phone so quickly says a lot about how user friendly it is! Aside from being able to use the Internet and check my email etc., the most important thing for me is the quality of the camera. The camera on Xperia Z1 Compact is brilliant, and is already making for some cracking Instagram pictures and videos. I think my friends are getting a tad annoyed with me using AR Effects and turning them into disco divas, fairies and pirates though! I recently attended some of the London graduate fashion shows and made great use of the Timeshift burst feature. I finally have a phone that allows me to get clear pictures of the catwalk models in motion!

6. I imagine summer must be a very exciting time for you. What have you got coming up?

We are well and truly immersed in festival season. My job is very last minute and spur of the moment, which is very exciting but also means I can’t plan anything! I’ve just got back from seeing Iron Maiden at Sonisphere and McBusted in Hyde Park. So you can tell I like to mix it up! It’s also fair to say that with the weather we’ve been having I’ve been able to test out how waterproof Xperia Z1 Compact really is! Over the coming weeks there will be more interviews and fashion press days I’m sure, as well as opportunities for me to do more drawing. I’ll share some more of drawings with you in the coming weeks!

We’ll catch up with Sophie again in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime have a look at her stunning drawings below and check out some of the cool behind-the-scenes Timeshift Burst snaps she’s taken!

The next Sony User Experience upgrade for Xperia T2 Ultra & Xperia T2 Ultra Dual starts right about now*…

We’ve been working to build new Sony experiences on Google’s KitKat release to create some neat / sweet features (if we say so ourselves) – in addition to a few performance tweaks here & there, some of the functionality you can look forward to includes:

  • We’re also uplifting Sony’s entire native app portfolio to the latest versions – bringing tweaked / improved / current experiences for (to name but a few): Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, Smart Social Camera and…
  • Sony’s Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration* – a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience – Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI, better download speeds, and more!
  • And proving pretty popular, now totaling over 2 million downloads (!) – our unique custom interface experience: “Xperia Themes”, with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select – skin up to 280 assets across your Xperia smartphone with a variety of styles…
  • Compatibility with our SmartWear Experience; SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog app – enabling you to record social, physical and entertainment activities and have them all visualised in a beautiful interface… reminisce at that past, make the best of the present and plan for the future
