Sony Ericsson to use NXP’s NFC Solution for its Android-based Smartphones

One of the interesting improvements found in newest version of Android for smartphones, NFC support, has yet to popularize itself as the only device with such chip on-board is the Google’s own Nexus S. Although Sony Ericsson has already used this kind of solution on their Japanese model, Xperia Acro, they have now made NXP their official NFC chip supplier.
“This latest move from Sony Ericsson is another proof point of the strong momentum and potential of NFC,” said Rick Clemmer, president and CEO, NXP Semiconductors. “Based on continued strong customer endorsements we have the opportunity to increase the sales of our NFC products 2-4 times as a percentage of total NXP revenue in the second half of 2011 from the approximately one percent it represents today. NFC offers a game-changing opportunity for mobile phone manufacturers to provide creative and innovative smartphones to their customers.”
NFC (or Near Field communication) is a wireless standard used to exchange information between devices. Although it is mostly used for purchasing of goods, it can also be used for transfer of secure information just by touching two NFC-enabled devices together. Latest statistics show that over 100 million people use this feature worldwide, but only 3.5 million of them use this technology outside of the U.S. Could Sony Ericsson promote the use of NFC-enabled technology? We will soon find out.
