The Nokia Lumia 900 has been turning heads since it appeared on store shelves in May. As part of our ongoing commitment to our Lumia owners, today we’ve announced the availability of a software update that brings numerous enhancements to the Nokia Lumia 900 in the United States and Canada.
Many of the enhancements released today are a result of feedback we’ve received on Twitter, Facebook or by leaving comments here on Conversations.
Thanks to those who have given us feedback on the Lumia 900 experience.
As soon as you have the opportunity, be sure to update your Lumia 900. To get the update, you can use Zune for Windows:

Please note: For this particular update, there will be three updates to install and the entire process will take up to 30 minutes to complete.
You’ll see the following messages on your phone: “Success! Your phone has been updated” followed by a message “An update is available…”.

We all know that the Nokia 808 PureView made quite a splash when it was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.
Almost immediately, the blogosphere became smitten with its 41-megapixel sensor, cutting edge optics and advanced algorithms that produced images on a par, if not better, than digital SLR cameras.
Marc Wielaert is an enthusiastic blogger from Hilversum in the Netherlands, who runs the smartphone-review.nl website and he was in attendance at Barcelona for the launch. It’s fair to say that the 808 PureView made quite an impression on him as well.
In fact, Marc, who has been using and testing camera phones for over decade, became so infatuated with the device that he set up a website dedicated to spreading the word about PureView technology.
The PureView Club, run by Marc and his webmaster Peter Buijsman, has now been going for a couple of months and already boasts a lively forum, galleries of photos and video and all the latest news about the Nokia 808 PureView.
Among the latest highlights on the site are some recent photos taken with an 808 PureView of Wollaton Hall in England, which was filmed in The Dark Knight Rises as Bruce Wayne’s mansion.
Marc, who works for a Dutch Soul & Jazz radio station, spoke to me about his love for the 808 PureView, why he set up the website and his fascination with camera phones.

Can you remember when you first heard about the Nokia 808 PureView?
In Barcelona, I can remember that as soon as possible I went to the Nokia stand, it was very big and busy, but I just had to see the 808 PureView. I completely fell in love with it.
The next day I returned again. In fact I visited the Nokia stand every day of the Mobile World Congress because the 808 PureView had some sort of magical attraction to me.
Did you get to use it?
The second day at the Mobile World Congress they allowed me to make a full HD video because I was not only blown away by the 41-megapixel sensor but also the first time I heard the result of Rich Recording it knocked me off my feet.
I talked with the Nokia employee at the stand and said, ‘this is not true. You plugged this directly into the soundboard.’ He said, ‘no, I recorded this in the hall with no microphone attached.’
I was totally blown away because the sound was so incredible.
So being fanatical about taking pictures with smartphones, plus working in radio and listening to that recording, I just fell in love. This was my future device.
How long have you been interested in smartphones and camera phones?

I have been interested in mobile phones for a very long time. My first mobile phone was in 1999, the fantastic Nokia 6150. It is an iconic phone.
Since 2001, I have been taking pictures with smartphones. The Nokia Communicator 9210 was packed with the Concord eye-Q camera, so I consider that to be my first camera phone. The Nokia N8 was also an iconic phone and I took many great pictures with that as well.
The camera has always been very important in how I value a smartphone. When the 808 PureView was announced I was blown away because I had been following the megapixel race from the very beginning, from VGA up until 12-megapixel. Now, the 808 PureView offers a totally new future.
You now have your own Nokia 808 PureView. What are your impressions of the device?
In the beginning it was not very easy because you have many settings. Of course, you have the idiot-proof setting, which is point and shoot. Then Scenes, which is a bit more interesting and can be quite handy.
Of course, though, to make the optimal macro shots and to get the best out of the camera you have to use Creative mode. So you have to get used to it, but my pictures are much better now. It is a very sophisticated camera.
I can compare the 808 PureView with my wife’s compact camera (a pretty good Panasonic TZ7) and I know for sure that the Nokia 808 takes better pictures. It has also replaced my SLR. For my website, I always used my SLR to take photos of the phones I am reviewing. Since I have the 808 PureView there’s no need for it anymore.

Why did you start the PureView club?
I saw an opportunity to build an international community to do with my passions, which are smartphones, taking mobile pictures and in a way, Nokia as well. I have been using Nokia since 1999 and the brand grows on you.
I fell in love with the PureView technology and I thought this is going to be big and it is going to be very important. Let’s start a website about it and make it in English so that it’s worldwide.
It will start with the Nokia 808 PureView and the fan base will be relatively small but as soon as PureView hits Windows Phone and the Nokia Lumia series then I am sure that many, many people will be massively attracted to it.
What kind of reaction have you had to the PureView club?
Reaction has been very enthusiastic and people make it clear that they love the site. We are part of a community that embraces the PureView technology and it’s all part of the charm.
You won’t find any digital camera, no matter how expensive, that you could also make phone calls with, share the pictures on Facebook or email them, etc.
It has so many communication possibilities, cellular data, WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC. The Nokia 808 PureView offers all those opportunities and is a perfect camera too. It’s a very complicated concept made extremely simple.
Follow the PureView Club on Twitter at @PureViewClub and see Marc’s Flickr account for his collection of smartphone photos.

Nokia City Scene isn’t just another mapping service; it’s a 3D-rich mapping experience. With a new update for Nokia N9 users, Nokia City Scene from Nokia Beta Labs is the perfect companion when roaming a city.
The first thing you’ll notice when using Nokia City Scene is that it looks a little different to the Nokia Maps you’d usually use to navigate around a city. Yes, you’ve still got the same navigation expertise and easy to follow maps but now you’ve got the chance to explore the city in full panoramic 3D.
When you select a destination your journey is split up into visual waypoints that updates as you progress on your journey. These real-life visual images show you exactly where you are at a glance and means there’s less time needed to study the map; you just need to look for the similar landmarks displayed on your screen.

Some larger buildings even show you what other smaller venues are inside. For example, a shopping mall is one building but is made up of several smaller shops. With Nokia City Scene, you’ll be shown all the venues contained within from the outside.
You’ll be able to keep up-to-date with your friend’s check-ins on Foursquare or Facebook and see exactly where they are on the map. If there’s a image of that location, you’ll be able to view it in realistic detail, as if you were there with them. If you like, you can then navigate to where that friend just checked in to meet up with them.

If you’re planning a big day out and don’t want to be connected to the Internet all day, you can prefetch all the panoramas onto your Nokia N9 before you go. This will keep data costs and traffic to a minimum, allowing you to only focus on enjoying your trip.
At the moment, Nokia City Scene covers London, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Louisville, Miami, New York, Newark-Jersey City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle with plans to expand that list further.
Download Nokia City Scene today and check out the beautiful 360º panoramas and the un-matched Nokia Mapping navigation experience.
Remember, any app from Nokia Beta Labs isn’t a full commercial version and you may encounter bugs. But the more feedback the Nokia Beta Lab team receives, the more they can fix or improve the service for you. So, once you’ve downloaded and given it a try, head over to the Nokia Beta Labs and give feedback.

Have you used Nokia City Scene? Tell us what you think of it, below.

What’s better than taking photos of your friends while poking silly faces? Swapping their faces around afterwards, that’s what.
Face Swap is a fun app for your Nokia Lumia that pulls the faces off two of your friends and slaps them on the other’s head; digitally speaking, of course.
With a bevy of apps out there that add blurry, grainy or coloured filters to your photos, this one is slightly different and there aren’t many on the market that do it this well. Using clever algorithms (I imagine that’s what happens) Face Swap searches for faces in the photo and delicately cuts them out then stitches them – almost – seamlessly together.

We say almost, because there’s a knack to getting this right. When you stand your two friends side-by-side make sure their heads are pointing in the same direction. If they’re looking in different directions the face-transplant won’t look right and you’ll have to take the photo again.
However, get it right and what you’re left with is an often hilarious photo of somebody you know very well looking, well, quite different but also familiar because they look like your other friend; it’s quite a confusion of the mind.
If you want to try this out right now but don’t have any friends immediately with you, then you can select a photo from the Pictures hub. This also means that you can download photos of celebrities and switch their faces over, too, just for a laugh.
I thought the two guys in the screenshot above looked a little serious, so I swapped the faces of two colleagues who were a little less so.

Once you’ve swapped faces and stopped laughing, you’ll probably want to share your creation with your friends. Face Swap can share your photos to Facebook, Twitter, SkyDrive and Sina Weibo.
If you don’t want to share it, you can just save the image and find it in the Saved Pictures section of the Pictures hub or in a recent section of the app.
Face Swap is a free app and is available on the Nokia Lumia 610, Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 900.
Have you swapped any faces using Face Swap? Feel free to post them in the comments for us all to see.

How would you like to be able make a postcard right on your phone and have it sent to a family member or friend, through the mail, for a very reasonable price? With the Nokia Lumia family of smartphones and the Nokia 808 PureView having amazing cameras and stunning image quality, an app like Postcard on the Run is a fantastic way send thoughtful wishes to friends and family.
To talk about Postcard On The Run, now available for the Nokia Lumia 900 and Lumia 710 and Symbian handsets alike, we had a chat with Josh Brooks, co-founder and CEO of the LA-based company.
Tell us about your company and what interested you about producing Postcard On The Run for Nokia.
Josh: We’re a seven-person company and we’re located in Los Angeles, California. We’ve been around for less than a year and I met the Nokia Developer Relations team at CES in Las Vegas in January of this year.
Nokia hit me as a company that is reaching out to developers for real. They’re building an ecosystem of developers that is tailored to making us successful. The Developer Relations guys at Nokia are truly amazing.
As for Nokia’s product line, when I first saw the 808 PureView, I couldn’t believe what I was holding in my hand. With the 808, Nokia is truly differentiating by offering an imaging device that absolutely blows everything out of the water. From the lens to the shutter to the accompanying software, the 808 PureView is revolutionary.

As an imaging startup, Nokia is the perfect hardware partner for us.
Also, I love how global Nokia’s footprint is. They offer us the ability to get to many markets and as an entrepreneur; this is important to me.
How was the process for developing your Windows Phone and Symbian apps?
Everything from planning to building and executing our application for Windows Phone was straightforward, though the approval process to get our app listed in the Marketplace took a little too long.
For our effort, we had one developer writing the app and we were amazed at how the Windows Phone interface is so clean and fun to work with. Personally, I’m a huge fan of live tiles.
Tell us about Postcard On The Run.
Josh: Our app is free and sending a postcard costs only costs $1.49 to a recipient in the United States and only $1.69 for sending it outside the US. That cost includes printing, posting, mailing and delivery.

If you want to add a scent to a postcard, we add on 50 cent. This is handy when you’re sending a postcard from say, Hawaii and you want to put coconut smell on the postcard for added affect.
The user interaction with the app goes like this:
- You can either snap a photo with the camera or grab one from the gallery or from Facebook.
- Then, you compose a message using the keyboard and digitally sign with you finger.
- The application will grab your phone’s current location and add a nice map or image of where you snapped the photo.
- Lastly, you can enter in the address of the recipient. If you don’t know the address or have it handy, we have a proprietary technology called Postal Gopher that will SMS or email the recipient and prompt them to enter in their address, then automatically inserts it into the Postcard app. It’s a really nice value-add for our customers that isn’t offered by our competitors.
Then, within a few days, your recipient will get their postcard in the mail with your awesome photo and personal message. You don’t have to find a post office box, get a stamp or anything – the Postcard On The Run app does it all.
Is there anything you want readers to know?
Our apps are available for Symbian and Lumia phones – the app is in Windows Marketplace and the Nokia Store and is absolutely free.
Exclusive discount. If you use the offer code NOKCON, the first 250 users will be able to send a free postcard. After the 250 uses are up, users will get a 20% discount on any order!
Be sure to follow us on Twitter and check us out on Facebook as well!
