Crackle brings films & TV to your Lumia

Green screen

Would you like to watch a selection of quality movies and TV shows on your Nokia Lumia for free? Does that sound too good to be true? Rejoice, because Crackle is now here for Windows Phone.

Crackle, if you’ve never heard of it before, is a video streaming service and one of the fastest growing entertainment hubs in the world. It is backed by Sony, so you can watch top films, TV series and original shows for free and uncut straight on your Lumia.

There is a huge selection of films for you to choose from; contemporary movies, such as Pineapple Express and The Grudge 2 to cult classics, like Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day.

Crackle

You can also watch favourite TV shows such as Seinfeld, cartoons, comedy and music shows, like the From The Basement series.

Using Crackle

Crackle is a free app that you can download from the Windows Phone Marketplace for your Nokia Lumia smartphone.

Once the app has been installed you will need to sign up for a Crackle account, or alternatively you can sign in using Facebook.

When the app starts, you swipe through a series of screens: featured, movies, shows and watchlists. Watchlists is where you can save films or shows that you want to watch later and there are also recommendations and celebrity watchlists.

Tapping on any film/show gives takes you to the overview page. From here you read an overview and description about it and press the ‘play’ icon on the film’s poster to watch it.

From this screen you can also pin the film/show to your home screen, add it to your watchlist, or share it on social networks, email or SMS.

Crackle has a large back catalogue so you might find it useful to find a film by looking at the most popular category, recently added or by genre. To do this you only need to select the ‘filter’ icon at the bottom of the screen.

Crackle

There are a couple of other things you may want to keep in mind. The app does work over a 3G connection but obviously you need to be aware of data usage. For the best experience I would always recommend using WiFi if at all possible.

Furthermore, within Crackle’s settings you can set parental controls so that children are not watching films that they shouldn’t be.

Those precautions aside, Crackle is a, er, cracking app that brings a world of entertainment to your Nokia Lumia.

Make Me Smile Monday #33 (or #1 if you’re new)

Regular readers of Nokia Connects will know that Monday is a time where I take a break from unboxings, reviews and photo galleries and bring you a taste of what’s been making me grin over the past seven days. So, get ready to chuckle or chortle, smirk or smile, grin or grimace.

It was a tough choice for top spot this week, but my love for Lego just edged this story to the head of the class. While the athletes were running, jumping and throwing in London recently, members of the public were engaged in a Herculean task of their own. They managed to create a map of the world using *one million* Lego bricks. In two weeks.

Complete with landmarks and mountain ranges, this is a true mark of human endeavour (over 4,000 people were involved) and whilst they didn’t go faster, higher, stronger, they certainly went bigger. Bigger than ever before, and it made me smile (hat tip to Glenn Letham for that one).

*****

That story that was edged into second place? The mobile phone throwing world record was broken in our homeland last week (or was it?) by a local man, Ere Karjalainen. There’s even a video of his record-breaking endeavours:

Throwing mobile phones *over 100 metres*. That makes me smile.

*****

How about these photos for making you feel like an ant? A clever series of composite photos has given me a very different view of the world. Apparently Michael H. Rohde photographs items from below, and the room’s ceiling/walls from as low as possible and stitches them all together. A very clever concept (quite similar to seeing the world from above), and as Michael Zheng puts it ‘quite trippy’.

*****

Quick Grins

Stunning portrait drawn using ballpoint pens.

Nokia 808 PureView shot of dripping water.

Donkey Kong shelves – I kid you not.

The most awesome lenticular Lego portrait ever.

*****

This is the bit where you suggest things that have made *you* smile this week, send me a link on Twitter (using #MakeMeSmileMonday) or in the comments below.

By the book! The 5 best movies based on novels

The ability to check out countless books and films on your smartphone is one of the great things about living in the future. And if you’re a real movie book buff, what better way to spend the day than watching film adaptations. Hollywood has been plundering the literary treasure chest ever since director Erich von Stroheim attempted a literal adaptation of Frank Norris’s novel McTeague in 1924. The resulting film, Greed, was sixteen hours long. Thankfully directors have since honed their art and we’re now spoilt for choice. Nevertheless, if we had to pick five, these would be our Oscar winners.

LA CONFIDENTIAL (1997)

Adapted from James Ellroy’s LA Confidential

Ellroy was afraid that moviemakers would ‘screw it up beyond redemption.’ He admitted to selling his soul but ‘Then I retrieved it.’ In his imitable style, he was rumoured to have recited creepy poetry to Russell Crowe. When Crowe challenged the writer about Bud White not drinking, Ellroy said ‘Never.’ Crowe, being a method actor, went teetotal for the whole film, calling it the worst time of his life.

FIGHT CLUB (1999)

Adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club

Film critic Rex Reed said ‘Maybe this film will find its audience in hell…’ In response, Palahniuk cheerfully said ‘I’m going to have to look him up in hell and buy him a drink some day.’ The big-hearted writer also donated the faux IKEA yin yang table that formed the establishing shot in Edward Norton’s apartment, to animal charity The Pixie Project. It eventually sold in April this year for over four thousand dollars.

ADAPTATION (2002)

Adapted from Susan Orlean’s The Orchard Thief

The swamp ape in the 2nd draft of Charlie Kaufman’s screenplay didn’t make the final cut. Understandably, producers got author Susan Orlean drunk before they handed over the script. Afraid that it might ruin her career and admitting that she ‘should have taken Valium’ before the screening, she eventually said  ‘What the hell!’ But although Cleveland-born Orlean jokingly stipulated that it was ‘Never shown in Ohio,’ she was impressed that Kaufman had ‘Unearthed themes not explicit in the book.’

SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993)

Adapted from Schindler’s Ark – Thomas Keneally

Director Stanley Kubrick called it a film about success, when the Holocaust was about failure. Terry Gillian laid into Spielberg’s Hollywoodised ‘tied up in bows’ work. Spielberg said for so many reasons, it was the most important film he ever made. Schindler, he said, saved 12,000 lives but remained an enigma. The ignored girl in the red dress? An analogy for how obvious the Holocaust was to so many. Spielberg’s grandmother taught maths to Holocaust survivors.  The young boy never forgot learning numbers from their arm tattoos

THE LORD OF THE RINGS SERIES (2001-3)

Adapted from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – J.R.R Tolkien

For so long, Peter Jackson had talked about making a film like Lord of the Rings. Eventually he thought, why not the actual books? Harvey Weinstein wanted one film for 75 million dollars, which Jackson challenged. It took three years of preparation. Actors were tied in for a three film deal, with no pay rise if the first film made them ultra successful, which of course it did. They also had to survive in New Zealand for eighteen months without going crazy.

That’s our top five, but what about yours? If you think we’ve missed some classic novel adaptations, let us know in the comments below.

What would you do for a Lumia?

We often see interesting initiatives on our social channels, like followers who shoot 3D photos with their phone or photograph the moon with custom-made accessories. But when Damien tweeted the following, we knew this was on another level:

“@Nokia I will let you paint my car for a Lumia 900. I am serious.” – @skooal – aka Damien, from Wexford

Well, how could we resist such temptation? To physically haul ourselves to the beautiful Emerald Isle (the country itself is reason enough to go!) and jazz up the car of one of our fans, was just too much of a mouth-watering prospect to resist. So, after a few weeks of meticulous planning, hours of poring over top-secret blueprints and a million cups of coffee, we are ready to unveil Damien’s new Lumia car!

The result looks pretty cool too, I’m sure you’ll agree! And if you live in Ireland, you might come across the car yourself (Damien drives from Wexford to Dublin every day). If you do, make sure you take a picture, send it to us on @Nokia and let us know what you would do for a Nokia Lumia! But remember, don’t tweet and drive at the same time (or use your phone at all – unless of course you’re using a hands-free kit. Safety first.)

The lucky winner with his amazing Nokia Lumia combo!

A few tweets later, Damien is cruising along the Irish roads, Nokia Lumia style!

What would you do for a Nokia Lumia? How crazy would you go in order to get your hands on one? Let us know in the comments section or on Twitter and who knows, you might be involved in our next exciting project!
