You got your brand new Nokia Lumia smartphone! You rush home, open the box, charge up the phone and it hits you… The feeling that you have to move all your contacts, calendars and apps over from your old phone to your new brand new Lumia. That looks like a tedious job!

But, that was yesterday. Today, we have Welcome Home for Windows Phone: a truly innovative app from Markspace to help new Lumia owners migrate to their new phone. With Welcome Home, you just plug in your Lumia to your computer (Mac or PC, your choice) and the application handles moving your contacts and personal data – quickly and easily.

Welcome Home works for new Lumia customers coming from iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones and will move your contacts, calendars, pictures, songs and videos from your old phone to Microsoft Live. But what about all those apps you have on your old phone? No worries there, either.

The Welcome Home application will scan your apps on your old phone and will produce a list of recommended apps with scannable QR codes for easy download.

So, if you’re an Evernote user on your Android phone, for example, you’ll get the QR code for Evernote. However, if there’s an app that doesn’t have an exact match in the Windows Marketplace, Welcome Home will provide an alternative. For example, if you’re a Pandora user – you’ll get a suggestion such as Radio Controlled from Windows Marketplace.

To get started with the Welcome Home application, download the application and simply plug in your phone via USB to your computer.

Step 1: Let it scan your data

Step 2: See your results

Step 3: See your apps recommendations and install the apps using the QR code. To do this on your Lumia, from the homescreen, hit the magnifying glass in the lower right of the screen and touch the icon that looks like an eyeball. The code will scan and you can touch the link to be taken to the apps’ page in Marketplace.

Step 4: enter in your Live account credentials and hit Next.

Step 5: The data extracted from your old phone will be copied to your computer.

Step 6: Finally, using Zune or Windows Phone Connector for Mac, move your data onto your new phone.

New York: September 5, 2012

Watch the webcast live from the event.

Video feed starts 10.00am Eastern Time Zone

Note: only DRM-free songs and videos will be copied from your old phone.

As you can see, Welcome Home for Windows Phone will make it possible for you to move your contacts, files and apps over to your new Lumia. Have you tried the application? What other tips would you have for new Lumia owners?

Back in June we launched ‘Nokia Connects:Go’, the monthly competition that gives you the chance to WIN a Lumia 900 & Monster Headset by producing creative masterpieces on your Nokia phones. The community entries have flown into us by the bucket-load since the launch of the competition and both Nokia and non-Nokia trialists have sent in photos, feature films, music videos and blogs – to name but a few!

Today we want to champion and highlight some of this great stuff! Let us know what you think of the entries below in the comments section or tweet at us using #NokiaConnectsGo. At the bottom of this post you can find out how to take part yourself.

Massive props go to Guido Baijense for this short video about a guy who has 60 minutes to make his life complete! It was all shot on the Lumia 900 (I recommend you watch it in 720p HD).

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Now, this next video shows off Paris in its best light! A true masterpiece from emeric, who has made one of the most relaxing videos I’ve seen in a long time with the Lumia 800. I suggest you leave this playing on loop on your laptop whilst going to sleep at night, you will sleep peacefully!

Au revoir to Paris and bonsoir to Peter Campbell, who has been documenting his musical endeavours as part of the Nokia Connects:Go challenge. Also, Kennytechs has been exploring Phototastic for Windows on his Lumia 710 to ‘shoot anything under the sun!’

Here is a ‘last, but by no means least’ offering to show you all. Below is an exciting short film by Pietro Malegori. Pietro filmed Sam Volery taking on an impressive tight rope walk up in the Italian mountains with his Lumia 900, if you are afraid of heights and you have no balance then I would look away now!

Coming up next week we have an exciting music video shot on a PureView 808 to show you all. In the meantime head here for full details about how you can get involved in this competition.

Alternatively, head straight to our trial a Nokia page and sign up!

Once you are on the trial and receive your phone you will have creative freedom to show us some of your amazing passions! We look forward to seeing the next set of masterpieces.

Music has always been at the heart of the movie industry. Even at the Lumiere brothers’ first film screening in 1895, there was a pianist tinkling the ivories. Twenty years later, Fritz Lang’s classic silent film, Metropolis, was accompanied by an original full scale orchestral score. Now, thanks to the wonders of modern mobile tech, we can enjoy movies and their music, wherever and whenever we want. But if you had to choose a play list, which would you go for?

The composer’s criteria

We asked composer Douglas Black Heaton which scores he thought deserved the title of greatest ever. His criteria: They had to be popular, influential and a damn good listen. They had to be composed scores, rather than soundtracks of songs, and each composer had to be different. So without further ado, here’s his magnificent seven.

Psycho 1960

Bernard Hermann’s unsettling string score for Hitchcock’s masterpiece is never better than in the infamous shower scene. Those high jagged string jabs have become embedded in the modern psyche as a byword for horror.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service 1969

Ok, there had to be a Bond movie in the list, after all the Bond theme is one of the most recognisable pieces of movie music from the last 50 years. In OHMSS John Barry takes this and almost tops it with the magnificent OHMSS theme. The score also makes liberal use of the classic melody that John Barry wrote for the song “We Have All The Time In The World” (ironically Louis Armstrong’s last recording).

Star Wars 1977

Any of John Williams’ big scores from this era (Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T.) could have appeared in the list, but Star Wars is undoubtedly the biggest of them all. Williams, introduced to George Lucas by Steven Spielberg, re-introduced the symphonic orchestra into movie music and a generation of movie goers listened in awe as the opening fanfare kicked in following the now immortal “A long time ago in galaxy far, far away..”

Blade Runner 1982

The Greek composer Vangelis was still basking in the glory of his Oscar winning score for Chariots of Fire when Ridley Scott asked him to create a musical backdrop for his dystopian vision of the near future. Vangelis duly obliged with one of movie music’s first electronica scores.

American Beauty 1999

Thomas Newman’s simple but effective score for Sam Mendes’ Oscar sweeping picture features many of his trademarks; repeating piano figures over minimalist strings and usual, often found, percussion. His style, and in particular the title track from this film, has reached the inglorious heights of being one of the most imitated in the business.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy 2001-2003

Howard Shore took on the enormous task of scoring Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and succeeded created a cinematic soundscape that has become synonymous with epic fantasy music. When Jackson released the extended versions of the films Shore had to write and record up to an hour’s worth of extra music for each film. Apparently a glutton for punishment, Shore will return to Middle Earth scoring duties for the upcoming Hobbit trilogy.

The Dark Knight 2008

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard had already collaborated on the first film of Christopher Nolan’s reboot of the Batman franchise. With his new instalment they had a major new character to introduce; the Joker’s theme “Why So Serious?” is a massive tension laden monster using distorted cellos designed to shred your nerves.

This is undoubtedly an amazing list, but would you have picked Psycho over the Pink Panther, or American Beauty over Gladiator? Should Elfman, Goldsmith, Horner, Desplat or Morricone have been given a thumbs up? Let us know in the comments below.

Conversations is just a small part of Nokia’s presence on the Internet. In fact, most of the credit and most of the work belongs to you! We know that your blogs and websites are an integral part of spreading the word, and the love, for all things Nokia.

It also says a lot about your passion and enthusiasm for Nokia’s products that so many of you have taken the time and effort to create websites devoted to them. You could say that it’s humbling.

We have compiled a list of some of our favourite Nokia fan websites and blogs. Some are focused on a particular device or aspect of Nokia, while others are more wide-ranging. We’ve sorted them into categories:

General
Lumia and Windows Phone
Nokia 808 PureView and photography
Symbian

General

My Nokia Blog
http://mynokiablog.com/

The biggest compliment I can pay to ‘My Nokia Blog’ is that it could easily be mistaken for an official Nokia website. There is a wealth of content that covers everything from the latest news (and rumours), tutorials and accessories.

The Nokia Blog
http://thenokiablog.com/

The Nokia Blog is run by New Yorker, Mark Guim, who also presents the videos on the site and on the associated YouTube channel. There is also the regular mix of news and reviews but it is the videos that make the website stand out. Also worth mentioning is the price check page that shows you the latest and best deals for Lumia devices on eBay.

Nokia Innovation
http://nokiainnovation.com/

Nokia Innovation claims to be ‘your portal to anything Nokia’ and it does a pretty good job of delivering on that promise. It feels comprehensive and especially when you use it in conjunction with its sister website, Nokia Tips (see below).

Nokia Revolution
http://nokiaandme.wordpress.com/

This was set up by Rv Cuarto, who writes simply that his love of Nokia inspired him to set up a blog. It’s written with a lot of verve and Rv’s enthusiasm for Nokia really comes across.

Nokia Poweruser
http://nokiapoweruser.com/

The introduction to this website says it all: “Every Nokian is a bit of a fanboy, a bit of an analyst, a bit of a critic and because every one of us is a bit of a “Power user”. That’s why this Blog is dedicated to all Nokia users and their beautiful and powerful devices.”

Nokia Tips
http://nokiatips.in/

If you want a website to get more out of your Nokia device, then this is the one for you. All of Nokia’s operating systems are catered for and it also reviews apps as well, many of them in video to show you how to use them.

Lumia and Windows Phone

Nokia Lumia Blog
http://nokialumiablog.com/

This is a bright and colourful blog that, dare I say, reminds me a little of our old website. I mean that as a compliment because it’s simple to navigate and easy on the eye.

All about Windows Phone
http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/

Strictly speaking, this is not about Nokia, but it is one of the primary sources for independent news about the Windows Phone operating system and its apps.

NokiaWP.net
http://www.nokiawp.net/

If all about Windows Phone is too general for you, then give this a try. NokiaWP is entirely focused on Nokia’s Lumia smartphone devices and is really strong on recommending apps and games.

808 PureView and photography

PureView Club
http://pureviewclub.com/

For a relatively new device, the Nokia 808 PureView is already extremely well served within cyberspace. Check out our interview with the founder of the PureView Club, Marc Wielaert a few weeks ago. Nice man, nice website.

Nokia PureView 808 Recordings
http://nokia808recordings.blogspot.fi/

This website was set up by @EasycapExpertti to show off the 808 PureView’s superior video and audio recording features. It has quickly become the destination for 808 PureView concert recordings and has an impressive archive with footage from some of the biggest names in music.

Only fools and mobiles
http://onlyfoolsandmobiles.com/

Prepare to be dazzled by @Sheridan01 as he demonstrates how you can get the most out of your Nokia camera phone. Many of his latest posts feature the 808 PureView but it is not the only Nokia device with which he has captured some stunning pictures.

Nokia Creative
http://nokiacreative.com/

James Burland’s beautiful website is mostly about camera phones and taking pictures but also goes much wider than that. I really enjoyed reading James’ appraisal of his own mobile industry predictions from 2008.

Symbian

All About Symbian
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/

An indispensable website if you have a Symbian handset. Shares the same look, feel and general comprehensiveness as the All About Windows website.

Nokian N8 portal
http://nokian8portal.com/

A website (and we know it’s not the only one) dedicated to the gorgeous Nokia N8. This features a good mix of technical advice (OK, hacks), apps, games, reviews and news.

Nokia N8 on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/NokiaN8

OK, you’re thinking this is just a Facebook page but it does illustrate that you don’t even need to build your own website now to spread your message, create a community and share your passions. You can do it all on Facebook.
