Let’s Create! Pottery on Nokia Belle

Potter's wheel

The great thing about apps is that they can bring a whole new world into the palm of your hands. Take pottery for example; when do any of us get to try our hand at that age-old craft? Never (for me, anyway). But now you can, with Let’s Create! Pottery – it turns your smartphone’s touchscreen into a potter’s wheel.

If you’ve ever seen a wad of wet clay spinning around on a potter’s wheel, it’s both hypnotic and beautiful. That slab of shapeless clay is then transformed into something beautiful, elegant and faultless, from the hands of a professional. However, as easy as it looks to mould, I’m assured it’s not. You need time, patience and a certain amount of skill.

Let’s Create! Pottery is the closest you’ll ever get to create a ceramic masterpiece.

Your first mission is to just create something. Anything. As the wheel turns automatically you need to manipulate the spinning clay with your fingertips. But be patient, rushing into it will undoubtedly leave you with a wobbly pot. Slowly run your fingers upwards to create a taller pot, stretch the sides outwards to create a fatter one, or inwards to make it thinner.

Adding details Sending order

When you’ve made your first pot, chalice or plate, it’s time to fire up the kiln. This dries the clay and makes it rock hard as you’ll now need to sell it at auction to earn some cash.

Throughout the game you’ll need to make more cash to buy paints for your pottery. The better the pots look in shape, size and colour, the more money you’ll get when you come to sell it.

 Brush effects Selling vase

Once you’re past the initial training level, you’ll next be sent on missions from your Aunt Chloe. She’ll send you pictures of pots to copy and using your skill, you’ll create them.

Let’s Create! Pottery is a beautiful looking game; from the spinning clay, to the final cooked, glazed ceramic.

In terms of UI, it’s really easy to control. All you need to do is manipulate the clay with your fingers or thumb and the clay responds in a way I imagine it would in real life. Also, when you move the phone around, you’ll see that you’re able to take a look at the pot from a different angle, as if you were actually slumped over a potter’s wheel.

Let’s Create! Pottery is available for Nokia Belle smartphones and costs £1.50 from the Nokia Store.

Have you created any ceramic pieces of art yet? Let us know, below.

YouTube apps for Nokia Belle smartphones

YouTube apps on Nokia Belle

When it comes to watching videos away from the computer or TV, there’s only one place you’ll turn to – your smartphone. And what videos are you more than likely to watch? Videos from YouTube. We’ve gathered up a small handful of YouTube apps available from Nokia Store that’ll work perfectly on your Nokia Belle smartphone.

YouTube Free

YouTube appWhen it comes to any app like this, it’s always good to start with the official app as there are plenty out there. The YouTube app allows you to sign in to your account and keep an eye on any videos you’ve uploaded to YouTube – however, you can’t upload any videos from this app.

Searching is as you’d expect; hit the empty search box at the top and type in what you’re looking for. Alternatively, use the browse videos, favourites, subscriptions or playlist button to watch content.

If just searching for videos and watching them is what you’re after, you can’t go wrong with this YouTube app.

cuteTube £3.00

cuteTubeNow only does this app deliver YouTube videos to your Nokia Belle smartphone, it also connects you to Dailymotion – another video sharing service.

With support for videos up to 1080p, you’ll always be able to watch the best possible video while you’re out-and-about, and download it too in full 1080p – if available – for watching later.

Sharing videos is also a possibility by sending the URL to your email contacts or Facebook and Twitter friends and followers.

FastTube Free

FastTubeWith a simple search interface, this app gets the job done. Type in what you want to watch, select the video and watch. Alternatively, sign in to your YouTube account to scroll through your subscription list and look through your own videos.

There is the added bonus of being able to give the video a thumbs up or down as you would find if you were watching it on the desktop browser. Plus, browsing videos via the YouTube Trends, Featured, Top Rated and Most Viewed options bring new ways of watching content and then download it if you want to.

YouTube Downloader £1.50

YouTube DownloaderAs the name of the app suggests, this one is all about the download. Sure you can watch videos, like all other YouTube apps, but when you’ve found one you want to watch later hit the download button.

With a variety of download options, such as: Where to store the video; which access point to use; and what quality to download, you’re in complete control of what you want to watch in the way that you want.

What YouTube app do you use on your Nokia Belle smartphone, and why? We’d like to know, in the comments below.

Social Innovators of the Week: Jonathan Jackson & Vikram Kumar

This week I am featuring two social innovators for the price of one life changing social organisation. Jonathan Jackson (CEO) & Vikram Kumar (CMO) are the founders of Dimagi and their mobile health platform called CommCare has just landed them the Schwab Foundation’s 2012 Social Entrepreneur Award at the World Economic Forum meeting in Tianjin, China.

Both Jonathan and Vikram were selected from a list of more than 1,000 global applicants for the prestigious award and now find themselves in an exclusive pot of 26 successful awardees (you can see all of the awardees here).

Let’s have a look at their award winning work.

CommCare

When Jonathan and Vikram originally founded Dimagi their mission was to integrate innovative technology into global public and private services in order to improve human health and well-being. I think CommCare is most definitely an excellent representation of this ethos.

CommCare is a mobile technology platform for community health workers in developing countries. The mobile phone app and web interface lets resource-challenged users to store and access patient information and monitor at-risk patients through mobile phones made available to remote health facilities.

Here is a nice infographic about the tech…..

So far the organisation have recorded 300,000 home visits! Take a bow Jonathan and Vikram because you are saving lives, the technology has literally helped mobilise health care workers all over the world (explore a mix of case studies at the bottom of this post).

Jonathan recently said this about the platform when he found out about the award acknowledgement:

“We’ve been working in this field for a long time, and we strongly believe that taking a product platform approach to ICT projects is the key to building sustainable programs to expand the effective delivery of life saving interventions. We greatly appreciate the Schwab Foundations’ acknowledgement and support.”

The video below will help you understand in greater detail the work that Dimagi carry out in the community with their mobile health platform:

Nokia 808 PureView – comparisons, opinions, examples

Nokia 808 PureView camera

It seems the guys at UK Mobile Review have taken the Nokia 808 PureView and have thoroughly put it through its paces. In fact, they have gone to great lengths to provide their readers with as much information, opinion, comparisons and examples as possible. Indeed they have even produced their own Nokia 808 PureView portal!

It would have been remiss of us not to give such dedication the coverage it deserves. Let’s begin with the comparison posts they have written. Dani went to the river armed with her 808 PureView and an iPhone 4S and took a whole bunch of pics to compare the 8MP capabilities. The comment from ‘I’m Pro Samsung’ sums it up quite well

‘WOW, that is one GREAT camera.’

Not satisfied with just comparing the 808 PureView to other phones, Nirave went one step further and took to the streets of London armed with the Nokia and a DSLR. The side-by-side images need some proper examination so you can make up your own mind:

Nokia 808 PureView vs. DSLR

Nokia 808 PureView vs. DSLR

There are examples of images showing off the macro power of the camera, an examination of how it performs in 5MP mode, and from 59 feet in the air (what better way to test how a zoomed in photo looks like?)

As well as all this, there’s a full review, and this video of the UI:

With so much to cover, it’s best if you set aside a fair few minutes, make yourself your favourite drink, settle in and explore the portal. What do you think of the photos the guys have shared? And the comparisons? Either let them know in the comments sections on their posts, or share your thoughts with us here or on Twitter.

My week with the Nokia Asha 311

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

The Nokia Asha 311 was originally designed for young, social and dynamic people. I’m not any of those things but, for the last few days, I have been using an Asha 311 too.

The Nokia Asha Touch phones were launched in early June; the Asha 305 and Asha 306 are the others in the full Touch family.

These phones are designed for people who are active on social networks, want to use their phones for entertainment, such as music and games, and want to get online. Many thousands of different apps can be downloaded from the Nokia Store.

Looks

Let’s start with how the phone looks. You would expect any Nokia device to be well made, to feel nice in the hand and to be just that little bit different. The Asha 311 doesn’t disappoint.

The first thing I notice is that the display appears to take up the entire front of the phone. When it is in lock mode, you can’t see the edges where the display ends – you’re just faced with a deep black façade. It’s very nice.

The bottom lip of the Asha 311 has a nice matt finish and above this runs a thin metal ring that encircles the whole phone and where you will find the two buttons on the front.

Nokia Asha 311

Touch Interface

The Touch interface is the key to the Asha 311, and it is easy and fun to use. I was also surprised at how fast it is. You can swipe the screens down and up and side to side. Thanks to the phone’s 1Ghz processor, the controls and animations are extremely responsive.

There are also some characteristic Nokia elements that bring a smile to the face when you see them for the first time, such as the icons on the screen bouncing up a little before coming down to a gentle rest when you scroll to the bottom.

Traditional Nokia fans will be familiar with the range of customising options for the screens and shortcuts. One feature that I especially liked is that the third screen can be changed to either the dialler (phone), music or radio functions. This means that you are never more than a couple of swipes from accessing one of the three.

Photos and Social

In trying out the Asha 311, I didn’t use it any differently from any other phone I would have in my possession. I like to check my emails, look at websites, take photos and see what people are talking about on Twitter. Pretty ordinary stuff.

Nokia Asha 311

The Asha 311 is a 3G phone with WiFi, has a 3.2-megapixel camera and it has the fabulous Nokia Browser, which uses compression technology to make browsing the web faster and cheaper.

In other words, it was more than capable of doing all the things that I wanted it to do.

On the photos, it comes with a fully featured editing suite that lets you rotate, flip, crop, warp, add frames, clip art, text, adjust the brightness and contrast and add special effects.

To be able to do all these things without downloading an app was a real, and unexpected, bonus.

I enjoy mobile gaming but sadly I am not particularly good at it. The Asha 311 though is a really good phone for getting some practice in because each device comes with 40 free EA games that you can keep forever. How could one resist? The only cost to me is my sense of pride when my young nephew beats all my high scores.

Me and My Asha

Over the last few days, I have come to look at the Asha 311 with a great deal of fondness. Yes, it is smaller than my regular Lumia 800 but that only makes me feel more protective of it.

Listen to what Pimorn in Bangkok or Ana Laura in Mexico City said about their Asha phones. They and 10 other Asha owners shared their stories in some wonderful and personal videos in a series called ‘Me and My Asha.’

I’m beginning to know how they feel.
