You’re probably familiar with the pace at which we are continuously updating our location-based apps like Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Nokia Transport and the acclaimed Nokia City Lens. However, one of your most frequently asked questions is how these apps get their data, in other words what’s the engine that make them work. The answer is very easy. All our location-based apps share the same technology core: the Nokia Location Platform.
It does not only power our location-based apps, but also Yahoo!, Flickr, Bing (therefore Facebook) and the whole Windows Phone 8 ecosystem. In more recent news, Amazon is licensing the Nokia Location Platform for maps and geocoding. Additionally, our maps power 4 out of 5 cars with in-dash navigation (e.g. BMW and Ford). All these companies decided to choose the Nokia because our competence in the location business is a key and differentiating asset, open to other leading players in the industry to offer great location consumer experiences.
Such a competence cannot be established overnight, it has to be meticulously built over the years to provide the best quality and richness of data. Nokia is strongly investing in this business, creating content, building a platform and offering consumer apps. This is the reason why Nokia is the only pure location player.
Going beyond a digital version of the paper map
Nokia realized soon enough the importance of location-based services on mobile and with the acquisition of NAVTEQ in 2006, Nokia also acquired over 20 years of mapping experience. That experience is living now in our location platform.
The Nokia Location Platform is the most advanced mobile location platform with a unique global footprint. It provides maps for almost 200 countries (with more than 100 of them navigable) and provides the best, automotive-grade map quality based on industry-leading technology. We have summarized all the platform attributes in the following infographic.

Because location is playing a central role in Nokia’s strategy, and because of its global footprint, quality and completeness of performance the Nokia Location Platform offers great opportunities for third parties to build upon. We provide the location platform solution they want, regardless of their business and/or screen strategy. We’ve invested in the platform, so they don’t have to, guaranteeing them fast, easy access to continuous innovation.
What this means for Nokia smartphones
Although the Nokia Location Platform is being offered to third parties for their devices and screens, it is important to understand the privileged position of Nokia smartphones in this context.
Nokia has a unique opportunity to build mobile devices and mobile apps made for each other. Not only our apps are optimized for our smartphones, but our experience in the location business gives us the chance to build mobile devices specifically designed to optimize consumer location experience.
Seven years ago we introduced the world’s first smartphone with GPS and navigation. Today, with the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, we are introducing the first autonomously assisted GPS and GLONASS receivers that optimize the offline experience of potentially any location-based apps on our Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

If you’re a fan of Angry Birds and a fan of Star Wars (and let’s be honest, who does that leave out?) then you probably want to know that Angry Birds Star Wars is available to download from the Windows Phone 8 Store right now! That’s right, Red Bird and Pink Bird have undergone an epic transformation in their endless battle against the Bad Piggies. Get ready to grab your Lightsaber and undertake an intergalactic adventure through iconic locations like Tatooine, the Death Star and beyond.
Download Angry Birds Star Wars
- Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
- Scan the QR code
- Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
- Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace
The game was officially launched at midnight (PST) by Rovio and Lucasfilm and landed on Windows Phone 8 at the same time as Android and iOS. That’s thanks to some close collaboration between Nokia and our Finnish neighbors Rovio to get the game ready so soon after Windows Phone 8 launch.
That means lucky owners of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 can be among the first in the world to experience the bringing together of two of the world’s most popular entertainment franchises. And what better way to enjoy the game? Dazzling on Nokia’s latest ClearBlack displays those Bad Piggies won’t be able to hide, while the super sensitive touchscreen means you won’t miss a shot (even if like us here in Finland, you’re already wearing your gloves against the cold). You can even load it into your Kids Corner profile and let the kids discover Luke, Leia and all the gang.
There’s no doubt that if you can’t get enough of Angry Birds, the latest Nokia smartphones on Windows Phone 8 are the phones for you. Fans of our ruffled-feathered friends can already download the gravity-defying Angry Birds Space, while Angry Birds Roost, exclusive to Lumia, gives access to the latest Angry Birds news, videos, ringtones and videos. What’s more, from next week you’ll be able to launch all your Angry Birds adventures from within Angry Birds Roost, providing a single hub for your birdie fix.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.
As for when Angry Birds Star Wars might arrive on Lumia phones running on Windows Phone 7.5 – Rovio and Nokia want to make sure everything works as well as it can before they launch the game, but we’ll update you as soon as we know more. In the meantime, go and download Angry Birds Roost to access some free goodies and use the Angry Cam to liven up your photos.
May the birds be with you.
[Angry Birds Star Wars not yet available in your local Store? Fear not, the title is coming, although there may be a published delay while your Store aligns itself with the force].

Hello everyone,
Today, we’re excited to tell you about our latest Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) firmware update for Xperia T and Xperia TX.
Starting from this week and rolling out to markets globally*, the release carries a host of new features and functionality.
Here’s a quick look at what you can look forward to -
Screen Mirroring
Screen Mirroring lets you experience the full Xperia T/TX interface wirelessly via WiFi Miracast on your TV** – get the bigger picture as you share photos, videos, games, maps, emails and music.
Extended standby mode
Extended standby mode increases the standby time by up to 4 times. When the screen has been in sleep mode for a few minutes, Wi-Fi and data traffic will temporarily be disabled and most applications will become inactive. Core functions such as calling and messaging will work as normal; you will still be able to receive calls, messages and notifications. Once you touch the screen to wake the device up from standby all functions are back to normal!
Sony’s media applications
The upgrade also brings new improvements to Sony’s media applications – we continue to evolve our applications to make your experience of enjoying and sharing content more personalised and effortless.
- Movies app now let’s you run the show from the dashboard with a small viewing window, controls and film gallery.
- “WALKMAN” app’s interface is more dynamic, with changing colours to reflect the track’s album art.
- Album app utilises Mobile BRAVIA Engine with even higher contrast, depth and sharpness in photos and videos. You can also make full use of SenseME Slideshows, delivering a tailored presentation matching music to your image’s ambience.
HD Voice***
Xperia T supports HD Voice, the most significant voice quality upgrade in mobile history; transmitting a broader spectrum of the human voice resulting in a more natural sound filtering out distracting background noise. It’s now easier to recognize voices, and to hear and understand what the person at the other end is saying, even in noisy environments.
All the above are delivered on the latest generation dual core processor – benchmarked by a fair few of our media friends, Xperia T/TX’s Snapdragon processor leaves others in the dust… it lets you do more – effortlessly download, run and switch between multiple apps, view and capture photo/video unhitched and enjoy the most demanding gaming content.
You will be notified in your Xperia T or Xperia TX when the upgrade is ready, and it’ll be available for download over the air, via PC Companion or Bridge for Mac.
For more information please visit http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/software/
Ant.
* The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models will vary by market and carrier requirements
** The service requires a WiFi enabled TV or the purchase of a compatible WiFi dongle. The dongle we recommend is the Netgear dongle (PTV3000)
*** Not available for Xperia TX

You only have to look at the Nokia Lumia 920 to see how far smartphone technology has come in just a couple of decades. Jam packed with revolutionary innovations, it’s the culmination of hundreds of ingenious ideas made real. But what about the people who had these moments of inspiration? Ever wondered what qualities they have and whether you share them?
Child’s play – Where it all begins
Were you a restless, curious child? Asking endless questions. Did you have a particular passion? Or did you see things in a different way to other people? Tom Sims was only thirteen when he made a board from plywood at school. He called it his skiboard – a ‘skateboard for the snow.’ The creator of snowboards made the sport his life, from a simple obsession. Children who later invent, think differently – a crane is a dinosaur, a box is never just a box. Don’t ever let anyone label you eccentric.

Who are your heroes?
If it’s Becks then it might not be inventive people who float your boat. But if you admire entrepreneurs like James Dyson, there could be an urge within you to emulate their success, a hunger to be like him. Do you relate to some people’s ability to think outside the box? Maybe you don’t realise that you too are a lateral thinker. People like James Dyson were determined. Are you? Did Dyson listen when he was told ‘But, James, if there were a better kind of vacuum cleaner, Hoover or Electrolux would have invented it.’ I don’t think so.

Do you have a unique way of looking at the world
As an adult, do you still ‘play’? Species like the dolphin, considered extremely intelligent, spend much of their day playing. But it can pay. Inventor Rod Sprules one night experimented with dried coffee grounds and wax, then pushed the mixture into an old cigar tube. He then burned it and the Java-Log was born, a cleaner fuel product that recycles waste coffee. Picasso – who co-created cubism, was constantly adapting, learning. ‘If I don’t have red, I use blue,’ he once said. That should be your mantra.

Are you a scribbler or a dreamer or both?
Dreaming is underrated. Too many people allow themselves to let the world entertain them. But inventors are restless souls, bubbling over with ideas that they struggle to contain. If you are a passive inventor you may just dream and imagine your ideas – but if you are more dynamic, your doodles may be worth more than you think. Leonardo da Vinci was a classic doodler and his drawings show planes and submarines – to be invented centuries later. He also never finished anything on time and was easily distracted. Genuises don’t think in straight lines. Do you?

Sound like you? Then perhaps you’ve got what it takes to join this rare breed of men and women. And if you’re already come up with a great idea, we’d love to hear your secret to inventive thinking in the comments below.

Last week, the Nokia Lumia 920 began appearing in stores, online and in people’s pockets in select countries. Already, we’re starting to see hands-on reviews coming in, so we thought we’d take a look at some of those. What have the tech news sites been saying about the Nokia Lumia 920? Let’s find out.
Engadget
Mat Smith, from Engadget, was very thorough with his Nokia Lumia 920. He explored the hardware, the software the camera and everything else in between.
When comparing the camera on the Lumia 920 to other manufacturers, Mat said:
“We came in to these testing scenarios with exceedingly high expectations, and in the extremely low-light situations, where most phones fall flat on their face, the Lumia 920 indeed hit its stride. Yes, there was often some ISO noise to be seen and the results weren’t always spectacular, but the 920′s low-light shots were always the best of the bunch.”
And when it comes to taking videos and using the Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) feature:
“Walking with the phone introduces minimal stutter – especially compared to what we’re used to on other smartphones, while autofocus is able to latch on to points of interest quickly. You’ll make the prettiest video clips you’ve ever seen on smartphone”

The Next Web
Matt Brian, from The Next Web, offers lots of insight into what you can expect when you buy the new Nokia Lumia 920. Matt reports:
“Microsoft has done a great job at making Windows Phone relevant again, updating its core offering to match and in some cases offer more than rival platforms from Apple and Google.”
And:
“Coming up against the HTC 8X, it’s close between the two, but the Nokia Lumia 920 edges out its HTC rival on imaging, ecosystem and its overall design.”
The Verge
Over at The Verge, Dieter Bohn dissects the phone, looks at the design and makes some pretty bold statements – he calls this phone a “tank”:
“You know that guy who walks into the coffee shop and unapologetically slams down a gigantic, 17-inch monster of a laptop on the table, declaring “This thing is a beast, but I don’t care.” That’s the Lumia 920. It’s a muscle car. It’s a monster truck.”
But then he explains why this is the case:
“There are ostensibly good reasons for the Lumia 920′s weight and size: a large battery, 4.5-inch screen, wireless charging, and PureView camera hardware all take up plenty of space.”

ZDNet
Writing about his experiences with the Nokia Lumia 920, Matthew Miller from ZDNet also comments about how the phone feels in the hand:
“There is definitely heft to the Lumia 920; it feels like a rock solid device.”
And when talking about the Windows Phone 8 OS, Matt says:
“Windows Phone 8 has addressed several weaknesses in Windows Phone 7/7.5 and the Lumia 920 looks to set the bar for features, functions, and apps on this new platform.”

Pocket-lint
While exploring everything the Nokia Lumia 920 has to offer, Stuart Miles has this to say about the specific Nokia apps, such as Nokia Maps:
“If it’s not the core OS features, it’s the Nokia apps that will enhance your experience. It’s simple things like offline maps to save you time and money when it comes to data costs – here or abroad – the People Hub and its ability to manage your contacts really is fantastic, and much better than the mess that iPhone or Android offer”
And what about the camera?
“Stunning. That’s probably the best word to use when describing the Lumia 920′s PureView camera, especially when looking at low-light shots – something the Lumia 920 specialises in.”

Wired
When it comes to design, Alexandra Chang likes the design, and talks about the size:
“Nokia has delivered a heavyweight player (pun intended) to take on the other smartphones, Windows Phone or otherwise.”
But the size isn’t a big issue:
“But that’s one of the few drawbacks to the Lumia 920. Otherwise, it’s a stunning device with two killer features: An amazing display and an excellent camera. The 1280×768 pixel PureMotion HD+ display is one of the best I’ve seen.”
All Things Digital
What comes to pricing, Bonnie Cha reports on the AT&T offer on the Nokia Lumia 920 saying:
“The Lumia 920 is an AT&T exclusive, and serves as Nokia’s flagship model. It features a 4.5-inch HD touchscreen and an 8.7-megapixel camera with advanced features such as an image stabilization system and technology to capture more light.
The smartphone’s battery can also be charged wirelessly, and to sweeten the deal, AT&T is throwing in a wireless charging plate for free, for a limited time.
With such features, I would have expected pricing for the Lumia 920 to start in the $200 range, but at $100 it’s quite the steal.”

With the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, you’re able to create great GIF-like images using an exclusive Nokia app called Cinemagraph. But what is a Cinemagraph? Isn’t it just a GIF? Well, yes, but there’s one thing that’s different.
A GIF is an acronym for Graphic Interchange Format – a bitmap image format.
People have been using GIFs since the format was created in 1987 and its popularity is partly due the fact you can compress the image to make it much smaller in size without degrading the quality of the image. However, it only has a colour palette of 256 colours.
In addition to this, GIFs can be animated – quite unusual for an image. This was ideal many years ago when videos would’ve taken up much needed disk space and would’ve taken a long time to download or stream.
Using a GIF also makes it very easy to embed into a website. You just upload the image and people will see a moving image; albeit a relatively small, slightly grainy one.
Here are some standard animated GIFs.

Via GIFtube
As you can see, the whole image is a moving image, much like a video. And that’s because they are, but they’ve been adapted for the GIF format.
The following images are Cinemagraphs (not taken with a Nokia Lumia).

Via – irol.trasmonte

Via mendhak

Via irol.trasmonte
As you can see the quality of the images are much better than an ordinary animated GIF; they’re not grainy, they are vivid.
With an animated GIF, it’s usually clear that you’re looking at an animated GIF. However, when you look at a Cinemagraph, you almost believe you’re looking at an actual video.
The wine from the bottle in the first image just keeps flowing, while everything else remains still. The cogs at the heart of the robot are the only parts that move and the flame on the candle in the last image flickers away while the child looks on in freeze-frame.
Now the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 have become available, you’ll be able to create similar images to the Cinemagraphs above.
Are you looking forward to making Cinemagraphs on your new Lumia? What will you create? Sound off in the comments section below.

Dani has been carrying out the ‘Ultimate Experiment’ recently – ditching every other mobile device and using only the Nokia Asha 302.
She’s covered various aspects of the phone in a series of posts detailing her triumphs (and a couple of frustrations). She starts by describing the process from the moment her SIM card made the transition to the new phone, and goes on to cover the camera performance and the hardware.
From the moment she placed her SIM in the Asha 302 she found the experience easy (aside from a few difficulties transferring her contacts). She likes the keyboard and the screen which is
‘bright and clear…and easily read’
As far as the camera performance goes, she took a whole gallery of images on a trip to London, and was ‘impressed’ with the results from the 3.2MP unit. Especially coming from someone used to 8 MP, this is high praise indeed. Here’s one of the snaps she took:

The Ultimate Experiment also covers a hardware review – well, it wouldn’t be the same without one, would it? – in which she says she has ‘nothing but praise’ for the keyboard (‘built like a tank’), the camera (see above), the speaker (‘superb’) and the general build quality (it survived in her bag without scratches or damage).

The Ultimate Experiment continues, so make sure you keep your eyes open for future updates. Have you had your hands on an Asha 302? Got any experiments you’d like to try with a Nokia? Let us know on Twitter or on the Trial A Nokia page.

As the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 start to appear on store shelves all around the world, you’ll all be eager to get your own, power it up and take your new shiny toy for a test drive. And we can’t blame you for that; we’d do the same. But before you do, make sure you update to the latest version of Nokia Maps to benefit from all the latest features.
Nokia Maps is already installed on your new device, but why not take advantage of this newest, hot off the press version (v. 3.0)
Downloading is easy; there are actually three different ways to get the newest Nokia Maps
- If the Windows Phone Store live tile is on your start screen, it will prompt you to update your current Nokia Maps version to the latest one.
- In the Nokia Collection of the Windows Phone Store you will find Nokia Maps at any time.
- If you are on your computer right now, you can click here and get Nokia Maps automatically delivered to your Nokia Lumia.
When it comes to finding your way in the world, the reality is we all need a little help from time to time. And more often than not, the faster the better. That’s why this update to Nokia Maps adds the ability to store all your maps offline, giving you super-fast access to the world, in an instant. Of course, you can go online to get the latest info and reviews about places, but storing the maps offline means you’re not relying on an Internet connection to get you to where you’re going.
Turn-by-turn navigation is no longer just reserved for people who drive, you can now get precise guided instructions using the pedestrian navigation, too. Whether you’re walking down a street, cutting across parks or climbing public stairs, Nokia Maps will guide you in the right direct to ensure you get to your destination, without the need of an Internet connection.
If you prefer taking the train, you can get public transportation directions and if the need arises that you must hop on your car instead of walking, you can now start Nokia Drive right from within Nokia Maps. Just select the end destination, and then ’Car directions’. Press ’Start navigation with Nokia Drive’ to open Nokia Drive.
We also understand that often when you navigate somewhere, to a shopping centre, an airport or a stadium for example, your journey doesn’t end at the door. In fact, it continues way into the building, until you reach your desired store, departure gate or stand within the stadium. That’s why we’ve now included venue maps in this new version. While this doesn’t strictly navigate you indoors (yet), it does show you all the different locations within a building.
This additional feature extends the helping hand of Nokia Maps beyond the front of the building, and to your final destination.
For the venue maps, Nokia has mapped 18,000 unique buildings in over 40 countries around the world, with more being added all the time. These include shopping malls, retail stores, airports and transit hubs. In some of these locations, there can be multiple floors to browse. Nokia Maps knows where the escalators are in order to help you where you want to go, as well as shows you where the restrooms or ATMs are, if you need them. All with accurate guidance and routing.
So, don’t forget to update your current version of Nokia Maps in order to experience all these features.
