iOS, Android, Firefox OS: HERE is available everywhere

Today’s announcement means that we’re bringing HERE to all devices and operating systems to give more people, with any type of device the ability to use the best location platform in the world. This openness is what sets HERE apart from other digital maps in the world. And with HERE, location will set Nokia apart.

Introducing HERE Maps for iOS

We’re making HERE Maps available in the Apple App Store: iOS users can more easily access our rich mapping experience with a single tap on their home screen. The app has been developed with the same HTML5 technology that powers the mobile web and is therefore very versatile and optimized for mobile use.

With HERE Maps for iOS you can get smart directions to navigate your way around town, whether you’re driving, walking or taking public transportation, so let’s have a closer look at all the features available.

What is HERE Maps for iOS?

With HERE Maps for iOS you can save an area to your device, so you can explore even without data coverage. You can save an area in advance and use it later at up to 4 different zoom levels.

Since you don’t walk on the same routes you drive, HERE Maps for iOS gives you dedicated voice guided turn-by-turn walk navigation that guides you along the best route for walking there: pedestrian routes, through parks, down alleyways, and more. With voice navigation, you will spend less time looking at your phone and more time enjoying getting there.

Because HERE Maps for iOS has been designed for urban use, the voice navigation only works for journeys on foot. However, there’s also public transportation and driving directions in over 500 cities and you can make transfers easily with detailed public transport connections. With live traffic information and incident notices, you know where the traffic is, so you can spend less time driving there and more time being there.

With HERE Maps for iOS you can organize favourite places by categories such as “Hip Bars” or “Cheap Eats” and sync them with HERE.com so you can build your personal map on the go and easily find them again.

For instance, you can add a place to your favourites on your phone and post a review when you get home: wherever you are, you’re always in sync. This feature is very easy to use because you can sign-on with your Nokia or Facebook accounts.

On an iPad you can also see the top 25 places nearby at a glance: HERE Maps automatically displays up to 25 best places near you in a scroll window at the bottom of the screen. Simply tap a place and get all the details or scroll down and filter your results by category (shopping, going out, sights and more).

Whether you’re making plans for later or just want to share a great new find, HERE.com lets you share locations with just a tap, including how to get there, with a simple link sent over SMS, email, or social networks.

Introducing HERE Maps for Firefox OS

Because one of the main attributes of HERE is its openness, we’re also partnering with Mozilla to create new location experiences for Firefox OS. In the coming months, we will introduce HERE Maps for Firefox OS and we’ll continue working, together with Mozilla, to give people the best mapping experience on the OS.

One more thing… HERE Android API

HERE Maps for iOS and Firefox OS are not our only effort to give everyone the ability to use the best location platform in the world. Today, we’re also introducing HERE Maps API for Android, which will made available to partners in the next months.

In apps built with the HERE Android API, users will be able to interact with extruded 3D buildings, search for specific buildings and preview their routes in detail to more realistically show where they’re going.

To showcase what partners can offer when they build Android apps with our HERE API, we have prepared a reference app in the following video.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Disclaimer: this is not an actual app that we are releasing in the Google Play Store, it is just a reference app we have developed to showcase which features we are offering to partners for their location-based Android apps.

LiveSight: immersive experiences you can act on

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Nokia City Lens, exclusively available for Nokia Lumia, is one of our most-talked-about apps and we’re very proud of it. Using the phone’s camera viewfinder, Nokia City Lens provides an augmented reality overlay view of buildings and instantly highlights places of interest. Nokia City Lens is basically turning sight into the next interface for searching the world around you. Although Nokia City Lens is powered by a complex system of collection technologies, it’s very easy to use. After all, what could be simpler to use than sight? It’s the most human sense for sensing and exploring the world.

After type pads, touchscreens and voice recognition, we want sight recognition to be another standard way to interact with the world around you. But it’s not only about sight recognition; it’s also about live map information. In one word, it’s… LiveSight. Nokia City Lens, developed exclusively for Nokia Lumia devices, is the first application providing a LiveSight-enabled experience.

LiveSight is a collection of mechanisms:

  • 3D sight interface: buildings are detected by our collection technologies with high accuracy and feeling of depth
  • Line of sight: with the line of sight view, only POIs in sight are displayed
  • Freeze frame: save a live view to inspect the city without having to hold the camera pointed at the target

This new technology is going to address everyday actions like finding a store indoor, finding your friends in a crowd or your parked car. Yes, with LiveSight you can create a place for your parked car.

“We’ve all been there — trying get to where we are going by following that dot on our phones; you take a few steps in one direction to see if the dot moves where it should; with LiveSight you can orient yourself by simply lifting up your phone and looking through the camera view finder and find your destination whether it is right in front of you or three blocks away” said Peter Skillman, head of UX Design for HERE.

HERE: the next generation of location services

Mapping and location-based services are integral to Nokia’s future and a key way that we stand out from the crowd.

Nokia’s commitment to building the leading location offering is demonstrated every day around the world in its rich set of location-based apps like Nokia Drive, Nokia Transport, Nokia Maps, Nokia Pulse and Nokia City Lens. Quite literally, Nokia helps people navigate their world. But this is only the tip of the iceberg: as a result of our acquisition of NAVTEQ and other mapping industry players, Nokia was the first to build the world’s most accurate and comprehensive global digital map by sending teams to verify every street in every city.

The next step forward – sensing our world

We can do more with our location heritage and mapping expertise, and go beyond a digital version of the paper map. Maps can be more than getting a person from point A to point B. They should bring places to life and inspire us to sense our world.

This is why today we are introducing HERE, the world’s first location cloud that delivers a location platform, location content and location apps across any screen and any operating system.

Just like digital cameras created possibilities that were unthinkable with analog photography, today’s digital mapping has amazing potential to grow into what we call computational cartography, the ability to produce maps on-demand and tailored to their actual use cases. Today’s digital maps are generic – i.e. always the same, irrespective of the content they visualize. We also believe that this game-changing evolution in mapmaking should be available to more businesses and more people around the world – it should expand beyond cars and beyond Nokia devices.

“Location based experiences need to evolve from an app-centric approach towards a holistic customer experience; consumers want services that are optimized for multi-mobile device use and available on demand, everywhere”, said Thilo Koslowski, VP and Lead Automotive Analyst, Gartner.

What does it mean?

Nokia Lumia and HERE are naturally made for each other, providing the best location experience on a smartphone, but we aren’t reserving HERE just for Windows Phone. Instead, we are opening it up to all devices and operating systems to give everyone, with any type of device, the possibility to recognize and the ability to use the best location platform in the world. This openness is what sets HERE apart from other digital maps in the world. And with HERE, location will be an even more powerful differentiation for Nokia.

We’re making HERE Maps available for iOS in the Apple App Store as a HTML5-based app and introducing HERE Maps API for Android. We will also introduce HERE Maps for Firefox OS and we’ll continue working, together with Mozilla, to give people the best mapping experience on the OS.

We are introducing LiveSight, a technology based on a highly accurate, 3D map of the world, which provides the most precise and intuitive augmented reality experience. Nokia City Lens, developed exclusively for Nokia Lumia devices, is the first application using LiveSight.

Our industrial collection of data is about to leap a chasm with the planned acquisition of earthmine. earthmine offers a complete solution for collecting, processing, managing, and hosting 3D street level imagery.

So stay tuned. There is so much more to say in the coming hours and days and the long-term, and we’re looking forward to your continued feedback as we move ahead. You can also follow us on Twitter: @heremaps.

Innovating modern map making with earthmine

Because we know that maps are hard to get right, we have been investing and will continue to invest time and money to build the world’s most powerful location offering, one that is unlike anything in the market today. Content creation in cartography is a continuous quest to make maps more precise and to map the whole world. We use innovative collection technologies (e.g. LiDAR, cameras, etc.) and a team of local experts to create close to perfect digital copies of reality.

Innovating map making

Map makers today have a vast array of data at their disposal and digital technology has made the map accessible to everyone. But at their core today’s digital maps are little changed from paper maps: they are static because they represent the world at the moment the data is captured and they still require a lot of work and imagination to get the most out of them.

We believe, in fact, that location services are revolutionizing how we use technology to engage with the real world. This is why we are innovating every aspect of what a cartographer does: we use data that’s never been incorporated into maps and then make sense of it in a way that transforms the experience. We are innovating what we capture, the way we capture it, and how we model to give rise to a new generation of user experiences.

earthmine acquisition

Today our industrial collection of data is about to leap a chasm with the planned acquisition of earthmine.

earthmine offers a complete solution for collecting, processing, managing, and hosting 3D street level imagery. This will add competitive advantages and increased differentiation to HERE‘s Location Content and Location Platform, sustaining competitiveness in B2B (e.g. data for in-car navigation systems) and driving highly engaging user experiences.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

earthmine is going to be a major asset in our arsenal of collection tools in that it complements our internal technologies with capabilities that enhance what we are already doing. The most obvious is the sensor design and integration that can be seen on a earthmine car, which enables mobile mapping and is massively scalable. And when we collect with earthmine we get the same wealth of visual and other sensor data that enables us achieve our mapmaking automation goals. By next year, with earthmine we will expand the number of countries to 31 in which we are automatically collecting 3D information. Additionally, earthmine brings advanced image processing capability and geographic information system tools that make the processed imagery and data readily available enabling us to move faster than we otherwise could.

Exclusive interview: Lumia 920 in Minecraft

Exclusive interview: The Lumia 920 Minecraft man

If you haven’t seen this masterpiece yet then you’re in for a treat. This is a Lumia 920 that has been created using over 370,000 Minecraft blocks! This epic build of a suitably epic subject took Gokuroyu (aka Darek) 14 days to complete.

Here is the video:

Here are some images of the building process:

We managed to contact and interview Darek to get answers to a few questions we had…

Thanks for joining me today Darek, I hope you are well.

Thanks for the invitation. I’m great thanks very much!

How long have you been playing Minecraft?

It’s hard to say. I remember Minecraft beta 1.6, so I probably started more than one and a half years ago.

So tell me, why did you chose the Lumia 920 as your first big project?

Everyone who plays Minecraft wants to create something big, but not everybody has an idea what to build. I really like Nokia products. Every day I was reading the latest news about the Lumia 920. I was pretty impressed with how great it looks, how awesome Windows Phone 8 is going to be and how much stuff Nokia put in this phone (like the incredible PureView camera). Let’s say that it was love at first sight. One night I was playing Minecraft and listening to ‘Creep You’ feat. Nina Sky (Nokia ‘Sped Up Mix’ from the Nokia Lumia 920 trailer). Then a crazy question came into my mind, “hey, why not build a big Nokia Lumia 920 in Minecraft?”. At the beginning it was supposed to be only a wall with tiles. But when I put the first block on the ground I was like “this is going to be the greatest Minecraft Lumia 920 ever! I wanted it to be in 3D with a working camera shutter, flash, processor and other stuff! It was something that no one had ever built before. That’s why I chose Nokia Lumia 920.

If the Lumia 920 was your first large scale build, what else do you have in store? Do you have plans to create more Nokia products?

If I have some free time, then why not? Now I’m adding some more stuff like Marketplace, IE10 and messages to the Lumia 920. One user from YouTube wrote a comment “Where is the wireless charger?”. So I think that this charger is going to sit behind the Lumia 920. Maybe I will create some products I’ve already mentioned on one of the tiles. I also thought about Lumia 820 and Nokia PureView 808. Maybe some of the Connects community have some ideas? Everything is going to be on the same map, in the same world. It will basically be Nokia World in Minecraft!

Have you been a Nokia user for a long time?

For two and a half years I have had a Nokia 5800XM with BH-450 bluetooth Nokia headphones, two vital ingredients for a cycling trip, might I add. I know that Nokia products are always great, that’s why I think that I’ll never buy another brand of phone. I hope that one day I will get enough money to buy the Lumia 920, until then I’ll stay with my 5800XM. And it’s not even my first Nokia phone.

What was your first Nokia phone?

My first Nokia phone was the Nokia 3210. I think I bought it in 2003, I used to try and beat records on Snake during lessons at school.

Have you ever thought about doing a Minecraft song/parody?

I don’t want the world to suffer so I sing only in locked rooms :P . I recommend you check out these two YouTube parodies: “Fallen Kingdom” by Captain Sparklez and “Form this way” by InTheLittleWood, they are awesome and worth checking out.

Well, thanks for speaking to me today, we look forward to your future projects. Happy Minecrafting to you!

Thanks, I send my regards to the whole Nokia Connects team!

What do you think Darek should create next in his Nokia Minecraft World?

Have you conquered similar feats for Nokia in your spare time? Let us know and we will show the rest of the community! Leave a link below in the comments section or Tweet us @Nokia_Connects.

10 great Windows Phone 8 features

Nokia Lumia 920 Live Tiles_yellow

When we announced the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, we didn’t have much information to give to you with regard to what Windows Phone 8 would offer. Now, with the Windows Phone 8 launch safely out of the way, we can provide you with more details on what cool Windows Phone 8 features you’ll get with your Nokia Lumia 920, or Lumia 820.

Number one – Customisable live tiles

Users of Windows Phone love the dynamic Live Tiles on the start screen. In Windows Phone 8, these tiles are more customisable than before – you get to choose how big the tiles are. This is perfect when deciding exactly what’s important to you and setting up your start screen in a way that fits your needs.

If you want really small square tiles for your best friends, you can do that. If you like a bigger square tile for a group of people, you can do that too. There’s even the option to make square tiles rectangular, spanning the entire width of the screen.

The whole tile customisation means you’re given more choice.

Nokia Lumia 820 Live Tiles_red

Number two – Nokia Maps

All Windows Phone 8 smartphones make use of Nokia’s Location Platform. If it’s a Nokia Lumia smartphone, the default mapping application is Nokia Maps. However, if you’re using a non-Nokia Windows Phone 8 smartphone, your default mapping application is Windows Phone Maps.

While Windows Phone Maps will make use of Nokia’s geocoding, traffic information and calculated routes, Microsoft’s own team develops the custom UI and POI database.

Number three – Wallet and Near Field Communication (NFC)

The Wallet feature enables you to store all your credit, debit, loyalty and membership card information in one place; just like the wallet in your pocket. This means you’ve always got access to that information, even when your actual wallet is at home.

However, for those Windows Phones with NFC secure element, such as the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, you’ll be able to purchase items from restaurants or stores by just tapping your phone against the vendors NFC terminal.

NFC is still used to pair accessories together, providing the accessory is NFC enabled, like the Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster. Sharing other information – such as contact details – to other phones is also possible by just touching them together.

Number four – Kid’s Corner

For those with young children, nieces, brothers, or cousins, you’ll understand that when they insist on playing with your phone, it’s difficult to say no. However, there’s always the dread at the back of the mind that hopes they don’t phone the boss, send a nonsensical email to the entire company or inappropriately like something on Facebook.

Those dreaded moments are gone, forever! The Kid’s Corner feature in Windows Phone 8 lets you decide what they can use and stops them from venturing into the dark-depths of your contact list or SMS threads.

Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820

Our first Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

Be a part of it.

Number five – Integrated VoIP apps

It’s now possible for third-party developers to integrate VoIP apps with the Windows Phone 8 dialler and contact list. This means you’ll be able to make VoIP calls right from the People Hub, just like you would a normal phone call.

One example of this is Skype. Once installed, it runs from deep within the OS, offering an ‘always-on’ experience, even when the app is closed. Even if your phone is locked and in your pocket, you’ll receive Skype calls or messages, like you’d expect to.

Number six – Lenses

Microsoft has been working on making a tighter integration of apps in the new OS. That’s why all apps that are camera-based will now be found within the camera app itself. Pressing the camera button will launch the camera and installed ‘Lens apps’ can be found when you’ve pressed the Lens icon. It’s right here where you can find the Nokia lenses such as Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot, too.

Number seven – Data storage and syncing

In a world where cloud-storage seems to be the future, everything we own (digitally) can be stored elsewhere – not actually on our devices. What this means is that we needn’t throw any of these digital assets away, instead, keep them for safekeeping.

With Windows Phone 8 you can automatically sync your email, contacts, calendar, instant messages, and text messages to your Hotmail or Outlook account. The same process happens to your photos, videos, Office documents, and OneNote notes, but to your SkyDrive account.

Nokia Lumia 820 Live Tiles_yellow bottom

Number eight – Shared Windows core

Windows Phone and Windows 8 share the same core. This means that when it comes to development, whether it is software or hardware, as a consumer, your experience across phone and PC will be exceptional.

For developers this is important because it means that you’ll benefit from familiar development tools when creating your apps, and those apps can easily be deployed to other devices, increasing your reach = more $ for you.

As a Windows Phone 8 user, this shared core means that you’ll be able to access more apps than before. Plus, with almost identical apps (due to the shared core) from phone to Windows 8, you should enjoy a much richer, consistent experience.

Number nine – IE10

The Internet browser in Windows Phone 8 matches the experience you receive when using IE10 on a Windows 8 PC.

When it comes to rendering webpages based on JavaScript, IE10 on Windows Phone 8 is up to seven times faster that the version in Windows Phone 7.5 and offers more support when it comes to HTML5.

NFC can also prove useful here, as you can share links, and open Web pages by just touching your phone with another phone, or another NFC-enabled item, like a poster, for example.

The same SmartScreen filter that exists on IE10 on Windows 8 exists on the Windows Phone 8 version. If you venture onto a potentially malicious site, a big red screen will remind you to browse safely. Whether you listen to it or not, is up to you.

Number 10 – Screenshots

Now, this won’t be for everybody, but for people like me (writers/bloggers/journalists), this is invaluable. If you’re writing about an app, a game or just want to show what the start screen looks like, you’ll need a way of capturing the screen so that other people can see it.

Previous to Windows Phone 8 there was no easy way to take a snapshot of your phone’s screen, but now there will be; by default and on every Windows Phone 8 device.

Pressing the Start and power button together will take a screenshot and place it in it’s own folder in your pictures hub. You can then share that picture the same way you would any other picture.

There you have it, 10 great Windows Phone 8 features that we’re looking forward to seeing, soon.

What, out of the above features, are you most looking forward to using? Use the comments section below to let us know.

Make the ordinary amazing #SwitchToLumia

This is something I found not only eye catching but pretty inspiring too. It’s an orchestra made out of old pieces of computer and office hardware, that has been modified and manipulated to play Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’.

Masterminds behind the project is this good? say that’s not all it can play, it can be programmed to play literally anything and even perform live.

This innovation and others alike are great examples of taking something we see and use every day, and then bringing it to life, making it jump out at you, screaming ‘this is what we can do, believe it!’

Take phones as another example…

Engadget, AAWP and WPCentral apps, all on Nokia Lumia

Engadget, AAWP and WPCentral apps, all on Nokia Lumia

Here at Conversations, we make it a priority to deliver you the best Nokia news and as far as we can tell, you’re pretty happy with it. But we also understand that you get your tech news from other news sources, too. To acknowledge this, we’ve installed the Engadget, WPCentral and All About Windows Phone app onto a Nokia Lumia to see how they deliver their news.

Engadget – Free

Engadget story Engadget podcasts

If you’ve ever looked online for a review or an opinion piece on a gadget or other consumer electronics, you would’ve probably stumbled upon Engadget. The Engadget team post a lot of material every day, usually going way into double figures, covering cameras, laptops, accessories and mobile phones, to name just a few.

Their mobile app is free and feeds their latest news directly to your Nokia Lumia in a way that most news sites do. The latest news is the first screen you’ll expect to see upon loading the app, and delivers the last 20 stories with the most recent one at the top.

As with all Windows Phone apps, more content can be explored by swiping horizontally left or right. This enables you to explore the other parts of the Engadget site, such as five features that probably need more of your attention, and their podcast list.

The podcasts can be played from within the app and can still be listened to as you move away from that section and continue to read of the news stories. Even if you close the app, you’ll still be able to play the podcast, which is a very handy feature.

Nokia Lumia 920 grey yellow red

If you want to see more that the top 20 list, features of podcasts, there’s the Everything section. This lets you browse through galleries, videos and it’s here that you can search for specific articles.

As readers of Engadget will know, there are separate sections to Engadget, labelled Engadget, Engadget mobile, Engadget HD and alt.engadget; each one offering content targeted to readers who want something a little different.

When it comes to reading articles on the app, it’s as you’d expect; A headline, an image and the story. There’s not much else you’d need really. Additionally, flicking left and right on the story will turn the page much like a magazine and there are a heap of sharing options available, too. Sharing via Facebook, Twitter, Tumble, Evernote, Instapaper, or via email is all achievable with just a couple of clicks.

As if often the case, each Engadget story is followed by a stream of comments by their readers. If you want to add something to the conversation, hit the comment button under a story and type away.

Naturally, a Live tile can be placed on your Start screen and will flip over to show you the latest story that’s been added to the Engadget library.

WPCentral – £0.79 ($0.99)

WPCentral story WPCentral browsing tiles

Windows Phone Central is a great source of Windows Phone news with a huge community of like-minded readers, each willing to give their own opinion.

As you might expect with a site dedicated to only Windows Phone, their app is a great showcase of how a Windows Phone app should be – following style guides to a T. So much so, that you can change the colours of the app to match the same one you use for the rest of your phone, or any other, if you’d prefer.

The initial welcome screen is that of the news section. And, as you’d expect, the latest story is at the top with the older articles fading beneath it with a total of 20 news stories.

In true Windows Phone style, the next screen pokes into view from the right of the screen, encouraging you to explore the next page. The next screen is full of tiles and it’s here that you can browse the different sections of the site, such as; reviews, forums, apps, podcast, games, videos, developers, wallpapers, tips, tip us, and an offline list (for your saved stories).

Nokia Lumia 800 black magenta cyan

If you want to listen to a podcast and still read the news on offer, back out of the podcast section and continue your reading. They also continue playing if you decide to close the app and pop it in your pocket. However, they’re not listed in an easy to browse fashion, and instead you need to scroll through the podcasts to find the one you want.

When you want to look for specific news, the search section is where you’ll need to head and type in your keywords.

If you’ve found a story you want to read, the story itself is elegantly displayed. Again, the Windows Phone style is spot on. Within a story, swiping left or right opens up some interactivity options. You can select the see the images of the story in closer detail, as well as any video. Plus the comments section for the story is included here in true Windows Phone style.

Comments are displayed much like you’d see in your SMS conversations thread. You can add a comment to the end of the list, or reply to somebody directly by selecting his or her comment and you’d need to sign in, as you’d expect from a comment system.

The sharing of stories can be done via email, SMS, Windows Live, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, or by a URL you can copy and paste from anywhere else on the phone.

If you like your news delivers to your Start screen use the Live tile and pin it there. You’ll receive ‘toast’ notifications when new stories appear, and the tile will rotate to show you the headline.

All About Windows Phone – Free

AAWP latest AAWP app review

All About Windows Phone is another app dedicated to everything Windows Phone. While the amount of content delivered isn’t as much as the other two apps above (there’s still enough for any person), it is a good source of Windows Phone news, reviews and analysis.

The latest feed is the first one you’ll se when you run the app, showing the most recent at the top and working downwards to the oldest.

Scrolling along to the right, you’ll see a screen where you can navigate to specific news stories, from reviews, features, audio and video content and news.

As with all good news sites, there’s a handy search function that really enables you to find what you’re looking for.

And, as we’ve seen from the previous two tech sites and apps, there’s a nice little podcast section here, too. Called AAWP Insights, these podcasts include the latest news of Windows Phone – playable when reading the rest of the news or when the app is closed. These podcasts are shareable via email, Windows Live, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. There’s even the ability to add comments to the podcast, too, to share your own views.

When it comes to the stories themselves, the images that lead the story is clickable so you can get a closer look at what’s going on in the scene.

Sharing support is the same as is offered for the podcasts, and you can leave a comment for each story using the speech bubble icon.

If you want AAWP news delivered to your phone automatically, switch on the notifications option in the settings.

Are you a regular visitor to the tech sites above? Do you regularly use their apps? Let us know, using the comments section below.
