Nokia Transport updates for WP8, WP7 and Symbian

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

We’re taking our commitment to regular updates for our location apps very seriously and a good example is Nokia Transport (aka Nokia Transit in North America), which has been recently redesigned with a more intuitive and glance-able interface, specifically for Windows Phone 8. Today we’re also introducing a new beta version of Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7, with a very similar feature set and design. We are also introducing an update to Nokia Transport for Symbian.

What’s new in Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7 and 8?

The most obvious update to Nokia Transport is the improved interface – we believe it’s going to be even easier and more intuitive to use. We’ve introduced a new segment map that provides a detailed map view for each part of your route. Just tap or swipe a specific segment of your journey to open a map and a detail view that lets you easily see where you are and where you need to be. Another tap or swipe collapses the view.

1a---New-Interface 1b---New-Interface

Because we know that you might want to plan in advance, for instance when meeting friends for dinner, with the new Nokia Transport for Windows Phone you can do that. Simply enter the date and your departure time in the time picker to view your route options, and then select the route that works best for you. Now you know what time you need to leave, the station you need to get to, and the train you need to catch.

2a---Schedule-Options 2b---Metres-vs-Miles

We’re also introducing more options for you to tailor Nokia Transport to your needs. Not only can you now choose to display distances in miles or kilometres, but you can also decide how to be informed about departure times. Some of us like knowing the exact time a train leaves, while others like knowing how much time we have until the train leaves to adjust their walking or departure time. Now you can choose to display departure times either by actual times (e.g. 2:48pm), or relative times (e.g. now or in 13 minutes).

Last but not least, Nokia Transport for Windows Phone now makes it easier to find your previous destinations and lets you easily delete your destination history if you prefer to keep it clean.

3a---Departure-Times 3b---Departure-Times

If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8, make sure to update Nokia Transport from the Windows Phone Store to the latest version (v 3.0). If you have a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 7 and you want to test these new features before anyone else, just go to Nokia Beta Labs and download Nokia Transport beta (v 3.1) now, but don’t forget to provide your precious feedback.

What’s new in Nokia Transport for Symbian?

Today, we’re also introducing a beta version of Nokia Transport for Symbian with a better user experience and search function, but most importantly with the ability to get coverage update over the air. This means that you don’t have to download a new application every time we extend the areas where Nokia Transport works. If you want to try it now, go to Nokia Beta Labs and download the beta.

Where does Nokia Transport work?

Nokia Transport is available in over 550 cities and 53 countries worldwide and our coverage is constantly growing. If you want to know in which urban areas Nokia Transport is available and where we can also provide timetable information, just check our comprehensive city coverage page.

What do you think about these updates to Nokia Transport? Let us know in the comment section below or send a Tweet to @heremaps.

Blockbuster movie games for your Nokia Asha

Part of the appeal in playing video games is being able to inhabit different characters and immerse yourself in rich fantasy worlds.

On your Nokia Asha it’s ever so easy to become a soldier fighting deep within enemy lines, a driver on the run from the law or a superhero battling the forces of evil.

It’s difficult to resist a combination of gaming with your favourite comic book hero, right?

In that spirit here are some blockbuster games for you to explore – popping out of the cinema screens and straight to the screen on your Nokia Asha.

The Amazing Spider-Man (free Demo or £3)

The Amazing Spider-Man

We are all familiar with the story of how Peter Parker, an outcast at high school, gets himself bitten by a mutated spider and develops arachnid-like powers.

Now, with this game you can step into Peter’s shoes (not to mention the costume) and attempt to master your powers. You will be fighting the Lizard and his gang of evil-doers who have taken over New York City.

The Amazing Spider-Man features 10 levels of gameplay for you to fight and jump your way through locations such as Central Park, the Port District and the Museum District.

The Dark Knight Rises (free Demo or £3)

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the films of the year, so the game has a lot to live up to. The narrative follows that of the movie, pitting the caped crusader against his biggest foe yet, the mysterious Bain.

This platform adventure will see you on the rooftops and alleyways of Gotham City where you have to jump and climb and use a range of weapons to beat up Bain’s cohorts.

As with many video games, part of the magic lies in the excellent sound effects, particularly in the fighting bits. Huh! Bam! Arghhh!

Ice Age Continental Drift (free Demo or £3)

Ice Age

A complete change of pace for our next game, Ice Age Continental Drift, and I must confess that I haven’t seen the film. However, that didn’t stop me from enjoying the game.

The best recommendation I can give is that the gameplay reminded me of Sonic The Hedgehog. It’s very, very fast, there’s lots of spinning around and you are collecting objects (acorns, in my case) in your path, while also trying to avoid obstacles and bad guys.

If you are a fan of the films and are familiar with the cast of characters, then you’ll love this game.

Wolverine Mutant Armageddon (free)

Wolverine

The X-Men movies never really did it for me, so I was intrigued to see what the game had in store.

If you’re a fan of the characters, then there’s plenty for you to get your teeth into as the game starts with quite a lot of backstory and scene setting. Alternatively, you can also skip straight to the game.

The controls are really easy to pick up (tap anywhere in the middle of the screen to attack, for example) and while it is a pretty straightforward beat-em-up, it manages to pull it off with just enough charm.

Men in Black 3 (Free demo or £3)

Men In Black 3

This faithful game adaption of the Men in Black movie franchise sees you fighting aliens in different locations and even in different times – from the present day to 1969.

If you are familiar with the films, then you’ll be delighted to know that there’s a whole host of gadgets and weapons to help you in your battles against the creatures from outer space.

If movie tie-ups are not your thing there is an excellent range of games available for the Nokia Asha devices from leading publishers such as EA, NAMCO BANDAI and Zynga.

Filming with Nokia Lumia

Lumia 900 videos

We’ve had a couple of really nice Lumia 900 videos submitted for our Nokia Connects Go! competition this month, and who are we to keep them to ourselves?

The first is from Jacob Spera, who we showcased and interviewed a few weeks ago. He’s been hitting some tracks in the Colarado Desert with his trusty unicycle… yes, you heard right, unicycle!

Of course he was armed with a Lumia 900 too, and Jacob’s experience with the phone overall had it’s ups and downs. He told me that when the camera worked it worked really well, but other times he struggled to get the quality he needed. Whatever the challenges he faced were though, he overcame them to produce an awesome video. Remember to watch in HD!

Watch this video on YouTube.

The second video we have to show you is something a little different. Casual Arcane are a performance art duo from Maine in the States. They manipulate interesting objects, bringing them to life. I will be interviewing them later this week so you’ll be able to find out all about them then! For now, take a look at what they made for Nokia Connects Go! with a Lumia 900.

Watch this video on YouTube.

If you like either of the videos please leave comment, I’m sure the guys would appreciate it! If you want the chance to create an awesome video with a Nokia Lumia, drop me an email, leave a comment or reach out on Twitter.

Try Nokia Reader for Series 40 devices

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

If you want quick and easy access to your favourite local and international news sources then the latest version of Nokia Reader for Series 40 devices could be just the thing you’re waiting for.

The Nokia Reader app, which is available in beta, brings updated news to your phone without sacrificing battery life thanks to Nokia Notifications, which only uses your data connection when it is absolutely required – much of the hard work is done on the back-end servers.

You can select from your favourite news sources in the online directory of major news organisations, which is based on your location. If you live in a major city then you’ll probably even be able to choose a news provider specific to your hometown.

On your home screen

Nokia Reader

Nokia Reader can be added to your home screen (see instructions on how to do this) and then with just a couple of clicks you can be reading the stories in the Nokia Xpress Browser.

One of the great features of Nokia Reader is that your articles are stored in a cloud and based on your Nokia account. This means that if you switch to another Series 40 device, than you can still access all your articles on the new device.

Nokia Reader for Series 40 is now available for you to download and try in Nokia Beta Labs. It’s available for Series 40 devices and has been tested to work with Nokia C2-02, Nokia X3-02, Nokia C3-01, Nokia Asha 303 and Nokia Asha 300.

As with all beta apps, the Nokia Reader is still in development, so remember to update the team with your observations and tell them what you liked and didn’t like about the app.

Surviving Black Friday with Lumia

Mall scene

Thanksgiving is a joyous time when Americans spend time with family, enjoy a wonderful meal and pause to give thanks for their blessings. Once the football is watched and the turkey is eaten however, it’s shopping time.

With Christmas fast approaching, the Friday after Thanksgiving here in the States is called Black Friday – where mobs of antsy shoppers fill stores and try to get the best discounts possible on their Christmas shopping lists.

Typically Black Friday shopping means hitting the mall or major department store early, and I mean early in the morning to secure your place in line. However, with your Lumia on you this year, you can load up a few apps to make sure your Black Friday goes smoothly.

Finding the right deal

With so many cool gadgets out this year, electronics are a major gift category this holiday season. Be sure to stay in the know about the latest prices and reviews of thousands of products with the Newegg app. Newegg may not be known too far outside the geek circles, but they are one of the web’s leading retailers of computers, electronics, home theater and more. They have quick service and fast shipping times.

If you have a person on your list that’s into home improvement or anything that can be found from The Home Depot, you’ll be happy to know that The Home Depot has an official app that lets you search for products, read reviews and find your local store. For me, I’ve used the Home Depot app to do comparison-shopping while in other hardware stores (when Home Depot isn’t close by) to make sure I’m getting a decent price.

To keep track of all the deals going on around you, consider Deal$, which is an aggregator that shows online retailers’ best prices. The sites that show up in the app include Woot, Slickdeals, FatWallet and others.

Checking prices

Let’s say you’re in a retailer and you’re not sure if the price you’re looking at is comparable to other stores in the area? This is where ShopSavvy can save you real money. With ShopSavvy, you simply scan the barcode on the product and are served with product information and online prices that will help with your purchasing decision.

RedLaser is another reader favorite for this type of scan and compare functionality.

For keeping an eye on a particular product price at Amazon or Newegg, a-z deal tracker will be your best friend. The app let’s you watch items you want and lets you know if/when they drop in price. You can even set an alert to give you a notice in case of a price drop and the app isn’t running. You can also research prices over time and read reviews.

Keeping it all together

It can be a chore to keep all your shopping lists together. If you need a little help, rely on Evernote. This amazing app can help you track all those you want to shop for and the potential gifts you’d like to buy.

Imagine you see a product in a store and you want to save it in your list of potential items to buy: snap a photo and store it in Evernote and you will always have it, along with geo-encoding so you know exactly where you snapped the photo.

Lastly, if you’re getting low on cash while you’re out and about and need to know where your nearest ATM is, rely upon MasterCard ATM Hunter. The app shows you your closest ATM without you needing to type in your location.

Which apps are you relying upon this Black Friday?

New Nokia Lumia 820 Videos

Following the excitement generated by the release of the Nokia Lumia 820, we scoured the web – actually, just YouTube – to find out how you rated the device, with particular emphasis on the credentials of the camera and video.

Starting with Short World’s test, the Nokia Lumia 820’s video capabilities are shown to be impressive with bright and clear pictures – pointing positively to the lack of colour grading.

Note: For best quality, watch these videos in HD (or full screen)

Alternatively, Stereopoly tested the excellence of the video on the road, while whizzing through the streets in a car, and found the camera to still maintain its rich imagery and focus.  Even close-ups of objects with complex colour composition, such as flowers, seem to come to life.

Watch this video on YouTube.

1 Mobile News neatly illustrate how the Nokia Lumia 820 has adapted to allow users to play games effectively whilst wearing gloves. Once upon a time such a feat was not possible but the Lumia 820’s touchscreen control and sensitivity allows you to enjoy your favourite games while braving the cold.

Watch this video on YouTube.

As well as the benefits discussed above, there are plenty of other cool features that the Nokia Lumia 820 offers. Why not share your videos and comments, and show us what great benefits you’ve discovered?
