Setting up Wallet on your Nokia Lumia

Setting up Wallet on your Nokia Lumia

As part of our daily routine when leaving the house, we all go through the same basic ritual. Keys? Check! Phone? Check! Wallet? Check! While all are important for daily survival, the latter two can be combined to make your life a little easier when it comes to certain purchases, thanks to the Wallet feature built into your Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820, or Lumia 620 smartphone.

What does Wallet store?

Open your wallet and take a look inside. You’ll probably find credit, debit, loyalty, and membership cards, as well as some coupons. Those same items can be stored digitally on your Nokia Lumia.

By saving your credit and debit card details to the Wallet feature you can purchase apps from within the Windows Phone Store with any account you’ve saved; just select the option at the checkout. This can be useful when you’re trying to keep an eye on your finances and know you’ve got more money in one account, than another.

Windows-Phone-Store Store-payment

If you’re a regular shopper at a particular store, the chances are you own a loyalty card. Save the details on your phone so that next time you shop at the store, and forget your loyalty card, you’ll have all the details at hand.

Wallet is also great for storing membership card details. If you’re a member of a movie rental store, a vehicle recovery company, or just a library, you can store your membership number on your phone in one easy to view place.

For the more thrifty people, including me, using vouchers wisely can often see you shaving a couple of quid off the end of your grocery bill. If you have any coupons, add it to your wallet. You can set a reminder for when it expires, too, so they never silently expire – unlike the coupons you cut from a newspaper.

In addition to all of these, you can also add your PayPal account details and any Microsoft gift cards that you may have. Both of these will allow you to make purchases from within Windows Phone Store.

How to add credit/debit card details

Firstly, locate the Wallet feature from the application list in your Nokia Lumia and launch it.

You’ll be welcomed by the All pane and it’s here that you begin to store all your card details.

New-card Card-details

If you press the + (add) icon at the bottom of the screen you can select what you want to add; credit or debit card, Microsoft gift card, PayPal, or other.

If you’re adding a new credit or debit card, you’ll need to decide whether or not you want to use that card for purchases in Windows Phone Store. Selecting yes will let you do just that the next time you’re trying to download games, music or apps. Selecting no will just save the card into your wallet.

When you add a new card, you’ll also need to enter all the usual details such as card number, billing address and other important information.

You can add loyalty card and membership information in the other section. There are some apps that work alongside Wallet, such as FidMe, or Plyce, and these apps will pull in the membership information automatically into Wallet. Otherwise, you can add a card manually.

Card-info About

The following form will prompt you to add details about the membership, such as the name of the card, card issuer, cardholder, and the account number. Fill in as much information as you can, but those mentioned here are probably the most basic of information you’ll need.

By adding your PayPal details you’ll just need to login as you would if you were to login at your computer. Afterwards, you’ll probably be prompted to download the PayPal app from Windows Phone Store for future use – you may as well as it’s quite handy.

By sliding the screen to the left or right you’ll enter the deals screen. It’s here that you can add those coupons to get some money off at stores. To add a coupon, just press the plus icon at the bottom.

Add as much information as you can so you can easily identify it at a later date. If the coupon is for 10% off a pair of shoes, name it that. If you fill in the merchant info, you’ll know exactly where to go to use the coupon.

Be sure to fill in the deal details to include the coupon code and also the expiry date of that coupon. Upon saving, you’ll find the add reminder option at the bottom of the screen, where you’ll be able to add the reminder details into your calendar.

When the time comes to use that coupon, you can hand over the coupon details – such as coupon code – to the vendor at the checkout.

Wallet-settingsAny one of these cards or coupons can be saved to you Start screen as a tile, ready to launch with just a tap. Alternatively, you can open the wallet and find all the cards and coupons there.

For those worried about security and people looking through your phone, there’s the option to add a pin code to your entire wallet. If somebody clicks on any of the Start screen tiles, a pin code entry screen will greet them. You can also use the same pin within the Windows Phone Store to stop people from downloading apps, music or games without you knowing.

Nokia Lumia 920 wins 2012 Engadget Awards

engadget

Engadget, one of our favorite technology sites, recently held a contest asking their readers to rank their favorite devices, ranging from TVs to phones and laptops.

To our delight, our customers and fans came through for Nokia again. The Nokia Lumia 920 – the world’s most innovative smartphone – won Best Smartphone of 2012!

lumia_winsWe’re not quite sure if it’s because of innovations like PureView, wireless charging or the amazing super sensitive touch display, but we’re happy and we have all the Nokia customers and fans to thank.

The Lumia 920 won the category decisively, garnering more than 43% of the votes. For comparison, the next best phones in terms of votes only managed to get 15.5%.

In similar news, last week Gizmodo showcased the Nokia Lumia 920 as having the “best smartphone camera” when compared to the competition.

Thanks again for all your votes – we appreciate the support!

Let’s keep the conversation going!

Star app for Lumia: Oreo Skies

oreo welcome

If you’re like me, then you’ll occasionally look up at the night sky, filled with awe at the majesty of the stars and planets floating above… and realise that you have absolutely no idea what you’re looking at.

If you’re also like me and own a Nokia Lumia, then that situation is about to change with the launch of a new, free app from everyone’s favourite biscuit people, Oreo.

Oreo Skies shows you what you’re looking at, replicating the skies of the Northern Hemisphere and the position of the constellations where you are standing. You can view this either inside the app, or in an augmented reality view overlaid on whatever your camera is pointing towards.

oreo sky

Download Oreo Skies

qrfree

  1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
  2. Scan the QR code
  3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
  4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

On a Windows Phone 8 device, you can also set the app to create new images for your lock screen, showing a selected constellation and a snippet of information about it.

That’s all neat enough, but there’s also a social networking and game side to Oreo Skies. You can send your friends messages attached to stars in the sky, which they can pick up either in the app, or its companion Facebook app. Stars with messages shine brighter, so you can see when there are messages attached. If they are dimmer, then you’re free to attach your own.

Send enough messages and you get to create a public message attached to the moon – which looks remarkably like a split open Oreo biscuit. And at any point, you can see your ranking compared to your friends on the in-app leaderboard.

The Oreo Skies app is available now, for free, in the Microsoft Store, exclusive to Nokia Lumia devices.

Xperia™ ZL – the world’s most compact smartphone with a 5” display*

A quick note on a cool fact – did you know Xperia ZL has the highest ratio of screen to phone size of any known smartphone?

Sony Xperia ZL accomplishes the design impossible: a 76% display-to-design footprint that’s second to none, all in a smartphone that fits nicely in your pocket.

The result? An immersive “Only Display” impression that lets your content take centre stage, whilst the hardware disappears – showcasing your images, photos, games, Instagram snaps, tweets…

For us, “design” is all about finding the balance between tech and aesthetics. For example, when building component layout; we eliminated a layer of air to bring the display closer to the lens for greater touch sensitivity, to make things more compact and for a clearer viewing experience even in the brightest sunlight!

This means you get a smartphone that manages to feel both striking and compact at the same time :)

5 exciting ways Nokia’s showcasing imaging in Social Media Week

SMW465

Social Media Week, sponsored by Nokia, is a worldwide event that’s exploring and celebrating the social, cultural and economic impact of social media. It’s all about connection, collaboration and sharing, and its schedule this year (as every year) is jam-packed with discussions and workshops and interactive events. It’s all happening between February 18th and 22nd 2013 across ten different cities worldwide, but if you can’t attend, you can follow it all on your smartphone with the Nokia SMW app.

The perfect match

Nokia, of course, are a perfect match for SMW, since not only do all Nokia smartphones have amazing connectivity for all your social media needs, but their on-board cameras are second-to-none—and social media is all about image-sharing. The full HD PureView Camera on the Lumia range is the best in the world: with 8mp and a Carl Zeiss lens, superb low-light performance, accurate exposures, and jaw-dropping image stabilization, it’s hard to believe that all this comes bundled with a phone. But don’t take our word for it: test-drive it at SMW, where Nokia is showcasing imaging all week.

Appy days in NYC

It’s all about apps in NYC during Social Media Week: Nokia are curating a panel to extol the virtues of mobile photo and video applications like Postcards on the Run, Lomogram and Vimeo. After that’s whetted your appetite, mosey over to the Photo Lab to try out the Nokia Lumia 920′s powerful PureView camera: get snapping, and see the results on your Facebook profile. Then don’t forget to swing by the 1197 Mobile Photography Conference for three days’ worth of photographic events, plus an interactive gallery.

1197_NYC_Headline

Showboating in Hamburg

Meanwhile, in Hamburg, Germany, fifty luck SMW participants will get to take to the seas! By which we mean, they’ll get to sail in Hamburg harbour and take part in a twitter photo contest showcasing the awesome imaging quality of the Lumia 920. To check out the entries, look for hashtags #smwhh, #welovehh and #nokia. On Friday, at an after-show Social Media Week party, the contest winner will be presented with a Nokia Lumia 920. Nice!

Going pro in Milan

Already got a camera-phone, but not sure how to take full advantage of it? In Milan, Italy, one of the big Social Media Week events planned is a session with media professionals exploring what it’s like to be a photographer today. Talk to the pros about journalism, mobile technology, and how smartphones have affected contemporary photography. If you’ve ever wanted the inside scoop, this one’s for you!

Picture perfect in Lagos

In Lagos, Nigeria, interactivity is the buzzword for Social Media Week! A pop-up photo booth on the Victoria Island event site will let visitors get hands-on experience of the Lumia 920′s amazing camera. All SMW attendees in Lagos can get their pics snapped with a 920 and posted straight to the social media network of their choice. You’ll also get to see your picture up on public screens throughout the Lagos SMW venues, and it will be made available for download from both the event blog and the Nokia Nigeria website, so everybody can see just how good you, and the Lumia 920, look!

SWMLagos

A photo festival of fun

That’s not all for Lagos: award-winning photographer Delphine Fawundu is leading a week-long youth photo workshop with local secondary school students. For this special event, Nokia are partnering up with Etisalat Nigeria, who sponsor the Lagos Photo Festival and run the Etisalat ‘Adopt-a-School’ initiative. The young participants will use Lumia 920s to shoot a documentary, and they’ll learn to use photo apps to edit their pictures. And after the dust has settled on SMW, the work continues: the students will post their results to the SMW Lagos Blog, and several photos from the project will be chosen to be exhibited during the Lagos Photo Festival in October 2013.

How’s that for a showcase?

What does it take to win the Lumia Geek 8-Week Challenge?

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

The Lumia Geek 8-week Challenge was a competition for budding mobile app/game developers to create something new or significantly updated for Windows Phone 8 in an 8-week timeframe. There were several winners, and we’ve caught up with some of them to find out what it takes to create a winning app.

Winners were split into different categories. Three were awarded the Overall Winners, while a further two won the Technology Showcase and People’s Choice.

Overall Winners

The first overall prize winner, was Rudy Huyn, creator of TVShow. Watch the video above to hear Rudy talk about app development.

TVShow_01 TVShow_02

“TVShow is a TV program tracker. It’s an app that lets you manage all your favourite shows, much like a TV guide. Instead with this one, you can set reminders of the shows you want to watch and your phone will remind you, as well as provide you with the synopsis and Live tiles.” explains Rudy.

Winning a competition must feel like a great achievement, as lots of time and effort goes into making an app in such a short period of time.

“Like any developer, I took part mostly for the challenge. Plus, I’ve always loved Nokia for their products and developer support. And with the thought of being able to attend Mobile World Congress, I had to take part. I can’t wait!”

What now, after winning the Lumia Geek 8-Week Challenge?

“Ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC), I’m going to continue developing apps for Windows Phone. I’ve already clocked up over a million downloads from all of my content.”

“Developing for Windows Phone is a genuine pleasure. I’ve just finished two new applications and have three others in progress.”

Winning the second overall prize was Andreas Jakl, creator of NearSpeak.

NearSpeak_01 NearSpeak_02

Andreas didn’t work alone, though; he had help from a friend from university Bernhard Aufreiter.

“With NearSpeak you can record a voice message and store it on an NFC-tag. You can place that tag anywhere for anybody to listen to it. It could be a message for your wife, a reminder to yourself, or a message to a stranger. There’s also a translation function, so you can hear it in different languages.”

When talking about the Lumia Geek 8-Week challenge, Andreas tells us that to create a successful app, you need to concentrate:

“The best way to create an app is to focus. Decide that your app needs to do one thing and make sure it does that really well. Then, if you have time, you can add to it.”

He also offers some advice for anybody wanting to develop apps that make use of the NFC functionality in Windows Phone 8.

“There’s a lot of information over at http://www.nfcinteractor.com/. There are presentations, how-tos, and plenty of open-source code examples for people to use.”

AppoinTile won third in the overall winners, created by Jandieg Barcla.

AppoinTile_01 AppoinTile_02

What does this app do, and why do you think it stood out over some of the other entries?

“AppoinTile is an extension of the basic calendar that you find on Windows Phone. Rather than just showing you one upcoming appointment, this app gives you greater visibility across your calendars and shows you up to four appointments.”

Jandieg continues:

“As for why I won? I think it was because my app is more of a tile than an app. On most apps, tiles are accessories, but AppoinTile is mostly viewed from the Start screen from the tile. Maybe, because it’s a productivity app people find it really useful as they can use it every day.”

When a developer sits down to create an app or a game, what drives them to do it? Is it for the love of developing, the fame, or the money?

“For me, it’s the love. I only develop for Windows Phone because and I’ve never felt tempted to develop for any other platform – it just doesn’t inspire me.”

Besides winning the competition did you learn anything from the experience?

“I learnt most about people. My users; they all think differently. They use the apps differently, they suggest, complain, they’re from different cultures speaking in different languages, etc. Writing software is not just about “writing it”, the hardest part is to be able to engage the user with it, so it is usable not from the technical perspective but from the “natural” way doing things.” concludes Jandieg.

Technology Showcase

This award went to TouchMountain, created by Andre Meyer who was unfortunately not available to comment on his app.

TouchMountain_01 TouchMountain_02

However, here’s a bit of info about his app.

TouchMountain is essentially a companion app for skiers, snowboards, hikers, or anybody frequenting the rocky/snowy peaks around the world.

Rather than just offering a basic map to show your position, this app details your elevation, and distance to the peak.

You can also read about the mountain you’re on or other local information using the Wikipedia features within the app.

As for making the app experience a little more real, Andre included an augmented reality view. By using this feature, you can see where the nearest peak is, by using your phone’s camera viewfinder.

People’s Choice

When it came to the People’s Choice winner, Yasasri Sampath won with his entry, Photo Signer – his first ever app.

Photo-Signer_01 Photo-Signer_02

“Essentially, it’s an image editing app. Once you’ve taken a photo, you can crop, resize, add some writing to the image, or add filters to that photo. If you want to remove all of the colour, except one, you can do that with Photo Signer”

By day, Yasasri studies at university and it’s at night time that he gets to develop. However, he has visions for the future:

“Although I develop at night or with any spare time that I find, I wouldn’t say it’s a hobby. Soon, I plan to make developing my profession; it’s a part of me.”

“For me, I do it because I love doing it and I really enjoy C#. Ever since I dreamed about developing something like Photo Signer, I’ve been driven by my love and passion for the idea.”

If you’re a new developer, or thinking of developing, Yasasri recommends that you take a look at https://www.coursera.org/ and http://www.lynda.com/. Both offer tutorials and help on programming. Also, http://stackoverflow.com/about is great for question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers.

The family is growing.

There’s also a whole raft of valuable information available at http://www.developer.nokia.com, such as wiki articles, blogs and discussions with everything you’ll need to create an app from start to finish, as well as business and marketing tools and developer programs.

Most of the winners will be present at the Nokia App Developer Conference in Mobile World Congress together with other developers to hear from Marco Argenti and other Nokia experts.

Congratulations to all the winners. Be sure to test out all their apps.

Nokia Lumia 620 review round-up

The Nokia Lumia 620 is an awesome smartphone, but don’t just listen to our opinion, because others seem to think so, too. What are tech news sites across the Web saying about the Nokia Lumia 620?

Engadget

“Nokia Lumia 620 review: precisely what an entry-level smartphone should be.”

Mat Smith, from Engadget, takes the Nokia Lumia 620 for a full-on test drive; comparing screens, battery life and the hardware with other devices, etc.

There are lots of points to notice, such as: “we had to see how Qualcomm’s lesser Snapdragon S4 Plus processor would handle an almost-identical Windows Phone UX. You can lay any of those concerns to rest, as the 1GHz dual-core processor offered up a very similar experience; you’re getting far more than what you pay for.” and: “What’s more, it’s arguably more attractive than most Google-powered phones around the same price point and could prove to be a huge hit among smartphone beginners.”

Mat’s review does, of course, go into much more depth than this; so make sure you take the time to check it out.

Nokia-Lumia-620

Wired

“the bright, glossy colour schemes will certainly help it stand out among the forest of black slabs on the table when you meet up with your mates.”

The Wired’s Dave Oliver has given the Nokia Lumia 620 a 7 out of 10 rating, with the pros being; a decent screen, Nokia’s feature suite and the fact that it runs Windows Phone 8. The only con is that there’s ‘not a lot of apps in the Windows Store’.

It’s worth mentioning that there are currently over 125,000 apps available, which is no small number.

Dave concludes his review with this: “Nice to see that Nokia hasn’t held back on the spec, with a nippy processor, decent camera and a perfectly fine screen, plus useful extras like NFC and Nokia’s Maps, Music and Drive features. The bright and bold colours may be designed to appeal to “da youth” but this is a very attractive handset for any age.”

The Gadget Show

“Put simply, this is the best budget smartphone we’ve ever tested.”

The Gadget Show starts by mentioning that the Lumia 620 is a much more affordable smartphone than some of the flagship phones from Nokia, such as the Nokia Lumia 920, for example. That’s a fact; it is. However, they end just loving this new smartphone taking time to squeeze in the words “superb build quality” and “Nokia’s rock solid app suite”.

TechCrunch

“The Lumia 620 stands out from the underpowered crowd by showing that an entry level smartphone can get the performance basics right.”

Natasha Lomas, from TechCrunch, takes it in turn to look at the many different parts that make up a smartphone. Starting with the basics, Natasha runs through the hardware and design and describes how the Lumia 620 is suitably sized to “slip into pockets and fit in the daintiest of hands.”

And what of the software?

“What the Lumia 620 shows is that Windows Phone can be an attractive low-price alternative — offering slick entry-level performance, with a solid browser, messaging, maps and of course integrated social networking, plus, in the 620′s case, value-add extras such as free cloud storage and Nokia’s free streaming music service.”

If you like lots of close-up product photos with your reviews, this is a good one to check out.

Nokia-Lumia-620_couch

Pocket-lint

“For anyone looking for the right Windows Phone to buy, we honestly think this is the handset for you.”

This is what Ian Morris, from Pocket-lint had to say about the basic messaging capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 620:

“Email support is utterly brilliant, with Hotmail – or Outlook.com as it’s becoming – Gmail and Exchange support all provided without any real need to configure settings. It has to be said too, you’ll love the Windows Phone email interface.”

And with emailing comes the ability to type out your emails on the virtual keyboard:

“The built-in keyboard is really good too, and that’s something that honestly surprised us with a phone this small. The correction seems to get it bang on, most of the time, and the keys, while small, don’t seem very hard to hit. It’s actually just about the best virtual keyboard we’ve used, honestly.”

WPCentral

”We’ll just flat out say it: we love the Lumia 620.”

Daniel Rubino from WPCentral, names the good as: “Bold, eye catching phone with fantastic features and excellent quality all for less than $300″; the bad as: “May be too small for some. Needs to be on more carriers.”; and the conclusions is: “Nokia has a winner on hand with the Lumia 620″.

There’s plenty more to read, so click the link above for a more detailed look.

Nokia Lumia 620

Our newest Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

The family is growing.

SlashGear

“Here’s a spoiler: Nokia’s Lumia 620 is arguably the most balanced device in the company’s current line-up, and it makes a case for being the best mainstream smartphone on the market today”

Chris Davies thinks back to the days of Nokia’s XpressCovers: “It’s XpressCovers all over again; only better.”

When coming to a conclusion, Chris says this: “For the price we’d recommend it over a cheap Android handset, especially if you’re a new smartphone user, but there’s plenty more than low-cost appeal in the Lumia 620′s favor”

We’re delighted that we’re not alone in thinking that the Nokia Lumia 620 is an amazing piece of kit. Please make sure you take the time to read all of these reviews in full.

Living with Facebook on the Nokia Asha 205

Asha 205

Facebook tends to be the first thing I check at the beginning of the day, and it’s also the app I’ll be browsing through 18 hours later.

It’s an app we expect to find as standard on Lumia devices, but it’s now also neatly integrated in devices like the Nokia Asha 205. I’ve been using Facebook on the Asha 205 for the past week – read on to find out how I’ve been getting on.

The Facebook button

Unlike other phones, you don’t have to spend time searching through the menus to find Facebook on the Asha 205. Instead, there’s a dedicated Facebook button on the left-hand side of the phone. Tap it, and the app immediately launches.

Asha 205

One of the things I really like about the 205’s Facebook app is the way it’s actually presented. The different features are all offered as large icons: News Feed, Messages, Friend Requests, Notifications, Events, Photos, Friends, Profile, Find Friends, Search, Pages and Settings. Move over each icon and you’ll be informed what it does.

There are also some great features integrated into the app, such as the ability to take photographs and upload them without having to close the app or open the camera. There’s a button at the top of the app, tap it and you can shoot a photograph to share with your friends.

The top of the app is taken up by a status update box. Again, all you have to do is click it and start typing to update your status. When you’re telling people know what you’re up to, you can also choose to check in, adding your location and letting your friends know where you are.

Head over to the News Feed, and it’s every bit as usable as Facebook on a computer’s web browser. It’s easy to see what updates people are making, and it’s also easy to join in any conversations. The News Feed function also integrates Friend Requests, Messages and Notifications, letting you know when something new happens.

Easy typing

Asha 205

Unsurprisingly, considering the QWERTY keypad, the Asha 205 excels when it comes to sending messages on Facebook. The design of the keyboard is perfect for me, and I much prefer it to using lots of touchscreen keypads. The landscape orientation of the screen also makes it equally easy when it comes to reading messages as well.

The Asha 205’s Facebook app offers everything else you’d expect to find, including the ability to search through all of your photographs, browse profiles, and keep up to dates with events.

Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the speed of the Asha 205’s Facebook app; it works using the phone’s EDGE connection, with no 3G or Wi-Fi on offer, but notifications, updates and even photographs were always quick to show up.

It proves that you don’t need to compromise on features or usability just because you’re opting for a more affordable phone.
