After narrowing down the list of 32 to 16, we’ve actually done it – we’ve arrived at the Excellent Eight.
From our large field of apps divided into the four categories(Games, Social, News and Entertainment and Utilities and Productivity), we now have eight apps that will duke it out on the way to the finale later this week.
Today we’re going to kick off all the Excellent Eight voting in each of the categories so scroll down below and pick your favorite apps!
Under each pairing, select your favorite among the two choices below. We’ll take it from there.
So, here are the titles for the next round!
Gaming: Star Wars Angry Birds vs. Asphalt 7 Heat
Social: Twitter vs. WhatsApp
News and Entertainment: AAWP (All About Windows Phone) vs. Amazing Weather HD
Utilities and Productivity: ProShot vs. Battery Level for WP8
To see the full bracket, updated with the Excellent Eight winners and contenders, see this link.
If you need to research your choice and study the form, visit the Windows Phone Store – and remember, you can try the apps before you buy on a Nokia Lumia phone.
Voting is simple. Under each pairing, select your favorite from the choices below. We’ll take it from there.
Kicking off the voting
To begin the voting on the first half of the Excellent Eight voting, we’ll take a look at the first two categories: Games and Social.
Star Wars Angry Birds
Angry Birds is an old favorite mobile game. But with Star Wars, it’s a whole new experience. In this edition, Red Bird and Pink Bird have undergone an epic transformation in their endless battle against the Bad Piggies. Get ready to grab your Lightsaber and undertake an intergalactic adventure through iconic locations like Tatooine, the Death Star and beyond.
Star Wars fans and Angry Birds fans will be dazzled with the graphics and innovation that Rovio put into this app!
On your Lumia, Star Wars Angry Birds looks fantastic on the large ClearBlack display. And if you’re in a place that still has some winter chill left, you’ll be happy that you can fling birds with gloves on, thanks to the Lumia 920’s super sensitive touch display!
Asphalt 7 Heat
Asphalt 7 Heat has generated a lot of interest since its launch on Windows Phone 8 last month. This fast playing racing game boasts realistic 3G gaming and the 15 tracks look stellar on the Lumia’s screen.
Love to drift as you race down the track? You can do it easily with Asphalt 7 Heat! The game uses the accelerometer for controlling the car and players use easy controls to hit the gas or brakes depending on your course.
As you play through and start to master the courses, you can buy new cars with added acceleration, nitro speed and better handling, depending on your taste. Asphalt 7 Heat can be played either alone or online for multi-player action.
Twitter recently got an update to version 2.0 that brought a whole new design to the application, aligning it with the apps on the other platforms. The new app features the four tabs Twitter users are used to seeing including:
- Home: view Tweets from accounts you follow
- Connect: See your mentions and also who’s followed you or re-tweeted your content
- Discover: See friends and find new content based on categories
- Me: read and reply to your direct messages, see your lists and favorites.
The new app also brings functionality that was missing in the prior version including a Live Tile that lets you Pin Twitter accounts, lists and searches to give you instant access to your preferred content on Twitter.
With the updated app, Twitter has gained new fans on Windows Phone.
WhatsApp is a ubiquitous messaging app that allows users to send short messages to anywhere in the world, as long as the recipient also has WhatsApp loaded on their phone. Think of it as an SMS substitute that has a minimal cost (free at first and then just 99 cents per year after that).
The WhatsApp application for Windows Phone is quick to load and gets you to your messages quickly. With lockscreen integration and a snazzy live tile, it’s easy to stay up to date on your latest messages.
Another nice feature of WhatsApp is you can send attachments in a message including audio, video, location, picture, camera or contact, much like an SMS in Windows Phone.
AAWP
All About Windows Phone is an app that corresponds with the terrific Windows Phone publication aptly named All About Windows Phone.
The AAWP is a great mobile app experience featuring a clean look and feel. By using the Metro user experience, app users can easily see the latest headlines, browse the sections of All About Windows Phone (including news, reviews, features and media), Search and Podcasts.
Once inside an individual article, you can browse photos and text easily. You can even browse the links in each article and share the article out via social networks and email. Lastly – comments are enabled in AAWP, making the app an amazing way to interact with the fresh content that is updated daily on the site.
Amazing Weather HD
Weather can be boring, but not with Amazing Weather HD. The app blends beautiful weather scenes and weather graphics along with a pleasing user interface to make this app a fantastic way to stay up on the weather.
There are many themes within the application giving nice choices that bring your weather to life. The animations look nice and add flair to the popular weather application. The lockscreen support puts current conditions and the forecast right on your lock screen for easy retrieval.
Also, the live tile support features all three sizes, each with their own depth of information based on your taste.
Last, we like that Amazing Weather HD uses Weather Underground for their weather data – one of our favorite sources for the best forecast globally.
ProShot
Looking for a richer photo-taking experience on your Lumia? ProShot offers an alternative to the native Camera application that gives you key settings such as shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation and white balance.
ProShot is a perfect application for professional photographers (or someone who knows their way around a camera) who want to snap the photo using settings they know work for a particular situation.
Once you capture the perfect photo, you can easily share to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and other photo sites. In addition to snapping photos, you can view all the pictures in the camera roll, add a live tile to pin camera modes directly to your home screen and customize the color menu inside the application.
ProShot is easy to use and more professional mobile photographers will love this application.
Battery Level for WP8
Battery Level for WP8 brings some needed functionality to Windows Phone 8 that many switchers from other platforms request: a battery life expressed as a percentage that’s easily accessible. Natively, to get the battery level percentage, you must go to settings and view Battery.
With this basic but functional application, you can see battery percentage directly on the home screen so you can monitor when you need to charge your phone. In the app, you can also see a graph that shows how your battery life has trended over the course of the day.
Other added features include the ability to hear your battery percentage read to you. Also – with lockscreen integration, you can have battery percentage displayed on your lock screen where it’s easily viewed just by switching your phone on.

How exposure helps you take better smartphone portraits
If you’ve ever had a DSLR pointed at you, you’ll know it’s quite an intimidating thing. Very few people act naturally with such a monster camera shoved in their faces! But as the quality and manual controls on smartphone cameras have improved we can rely more than ever on our pocket sized devices.
So, now we’ve got the hardware at our fingertips, how do we get the best out of it? Here’s a few tips about exposure, using the Nokia 808 PureView, which might help improve your smartphone portraits.
Exposing yourself
All digital cameras make light readings and in their automatic modes opt to give you the best overall shot. In most circumstances this is completely fine; after all, these devices have had millions spent on them to give us the best results.
But sometimes, the ‘best overall’ photograph is not the most visually interesting and learning some very small tweaks can make big differences to your pictures.
In the ‘Creative Mode’ on the 808 PureView (or in photo setting on Nokia Lumias) you can manually adjust the exposure, deliberately under exposing or over exposing the photograph.
The more you experiment with the exposure, the more you will be able to anticipate the situations where you need to manually over-ride the cameras settings.
Here’s two photographs showing the cameras ‘correct’ exposure and then one deliberately ‘under’ exposed. Learning how to use the exposure controls can open up all sorts of image making possibilities.
The beauty of bracketing
A good way to learn about under and over exposing, using the Nokia 808 PureView is to ‘Bracket the Exposure’. This means that the camera will automatically take three or five exposures that span the ‘correct’ exposure with increments in either direction. This works best with static subjects since you’ll be taking three/five photos of exactly the same thing and to get the best results the subject should be quite still (such as landscapes or a still life). But as a teaching tool it has great value.
Here’s three shots that have been ‘bracketed’; one over, one ‘correct’ and one under. It’s easy to see how by manually playing with the exposure, you can quickly change the ‘mood’ or ‘feel’ of an image.
To flash or not to flash
The automatic setting on your smartphone will very often fire off the flash. Once again, as a fill-in flash this is mostly acceptable, but it might not always give the picture you’re after.
Here’s an example of a backlit subject – a typical instance of when your smartphone will automatically fire the flash. However, if you manually turn off the flash, the camera will under expose the person because there is still so much light reaching its sensor from behind the subject. This is a classic ‘error’ and one, which results in numerous silhouette portraits! However, by deliberately over exposing the shot, you can get more detail back into the subject despite still having the light from behind. (You will lose or ‘burn out’ some of the detail in the background though).
Rules are there to be broken
Although one has to use terms such as ‘correct’ and ‘error’, we shouldn’t forget that there is no right or wrong type of picture. A quick glance back over the past 100 years of photography will show all types of image making have some sort of value. What is important though is to learn how and why the camera does certain things and how you can override them when you need to. This will enable you to take the type of photograph you want at that moment and not merely to accept what the camera tells you.

Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster – available now

Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster is available now, so we’re going to look at them in more detail to find out why we should all have a pair.
The Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster is the perfect accessory if you’re looking for the ultimate music experience. Designed using striking colours to help you stand out from the crowd, the red, yellow, white and black Purity Pro delivers music to your ears, in style.
We’re sure it hasn’t escaped your attention that these bold colours are in line with Nokia’s current Lumia range, and that’s no accident – they’re a perfect match. And because the Purity Pro has NFC built in, connecting to your phone is as simple as touching the phone and headset together. Additionally, these work perfectly on any Bluetooth device, or with the included 3.5mm cable.

As with the Nokia Lumia 920 or Lumia 820, the glossy polycarbonate material that these are made of have the colours ingrained and not painted on the outside. So, any scratches or scuffs that may develop along its lifetime will be barely noticeable.
When it comes to sound, Nokia has a long history of delivering the best sound possible. Not only does the Purity Pro offer Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to block out external sounds, but also the perfectly formed pads cover the entire ear to stop further noise.
Geetanjali Sharma, Product Manager at Nokia explains more:
“We understand that people want the best possible audio experience from a headset. When listening to music with the Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster, the ambient noise that surrounds most people in everyday life is cancelled out by the ANC. What you hear is just the music and nothing else – the way it should be.”
Geetanjali continued to tell us that ANC only activates when your wearing the Purity Pro, thanks to one of the many sensors built into the headset. And in fact it activates on the moment you put the headset on, which is pretty cool! Not only is this great use of technology, but it also saves battery life, too – as does the ‘unfold to power on’ function.
We were also interested in knowing if the ANC would work if no music was playing, and interestingly it does. That’s good news for people with noisy neighbours, chatterbox work colleagues or those just wanting to shut the world out for some peace and quiet.
Music can be controlled through your phones music player, or by using the controls on the headset. These can be found by the ear pads and offer the usual functions like next/previous track, play/pause, volume up and down as well as for accepting and disconnecting phone calls.

Out of the box, you can expect to find a Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo headset, a 3.5mm audio cable that matches the colour of the headset and a carrying pouch to carry the Purity Pro around – if you don’t fancy wearing them around your neck. Oh, and an instruction booklet, of course.
The Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster is available now and costs approximately €299.
Will you be buying one? Which colour? Let us know, below.

Get gardening with your Nokia Lumia

Even though, in the UK at least, it remains mighty cold, the past week has seen the start of spring in the Northern hemisphere.
For many people, this is the most beautiful of all the seasons. Flowers are in bloom, lush greenery returns to our rolling hills and cute, furry creatures come out of hibernation. Rebirth and joy are carried on the fresh air breeze! Cue Vivaldi!
Click here to view the video on YouTube.
Strip away all the romance and there’s another reason that a lot of people love spring – it’s a time to get outdoors and indulge in a spot of gardening.
Whether you are are planting flowers to make gardens prettier or growing vegetables and herbs for cooking, there can be little doubt that there is tremendous satisfaction to be gleaned from getting your hands dirty in the soil.
As ever, your Nokia Lumia smartphone can be of assistance to you. Here are five apps to help you rediscover those green fingers.
Garden 360 (£1.99)

Garden 360 helps you to stay on top of your gardening activities.
It has a friendly and easy to use interface that lets you record which plants you’ve planted, and when you did it. You can add notes to each plant, take photos and keep a journal to monitor your progress.
This app is particularly useful for people growing vegetables in their garden or allotment. It has a tool for you to rate your harvest. Perhaps, in conjunction, with your journal history you’ll be able to identify the conditions or techniques that get you maximum results.
My Garden (free)

Gardening doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit. My Garden is a social network aimed at keen gardeners who want to share their knowledge, post their photos, meet up at events and even let other people know if they have seeds for sale.
This app lets you access the My Garden network (it’s free to sign up) on your Nokia Lumia smartphone, read and send messages and keep a gardening to do list.
The social element is quite useful because you discover the most popular plants that are being grown and, if you haven’t already, jump on the bandwagon. There are also descriptions and useful information about the different plant types.
Botany (£0.79)

If you’re eager to start gardening as a proper hobby (as opposed to just mowing the lawn and throwing some weed killer around) then this might be a good place to start.
If offers you all the theory and information that you need to become a smart and productive gardener.
Using tutorials, flashcards and quizzes you can learn about plants and seeds, respiration, mineral nutrition and plenty of other green topics.
Greenhouse Gardening (£3.99)

This is more of an e-book rather than an app but it might be worth investing in if you do have a greenhouse.
There are considerable advantages to growing your plants and vegetables in a greenhouse environment – you can grow food at a controlled temperature all year round.
Greenhouse Gardening includes stories and tips to help you learn and get the most out of indoor growing.
Gardener’s Calendar (free)

Timing is key if you want to produce good results in the garden and this app helps you to keep track of what you have planted and when.
You set up the app to provide reminders for when you need to water certain plants or when others are ready to be harvested.
The app synchronises with the lunar cycle, which, according to some, can have a direct impact on the quality of plant growth. Sounds ridiculous? Why not download this app and see what all the fuss is about?

Under each pairing, select your favorite among the two choices below. We’ll take it from there.
So – let’s commence the Supreme 16 voting!

In the first round of voting, weather apps fared well as did a favorite Windows Phone blog in AAWP. Will we see the weather apps face off in the Excellent 8? Let’s see as Round 2 gets under way.
All About Windows Phone

Reviews in the Windows Store give it a high star rating and like the app’s look and feel. Sean says, “Very, very nice app. Simple, attractive, smooth and functions very well.”
Plex
Plex is popular around the globe, which is why it isn’t surprising this app beat The Register in Round 1.
Plex for Windows Phone brings the power of Plex to your mobile device. With Plex, you can stream your music, videos and photos from your home computers running Plex Media Server (available from http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/) and access content from a wide range of channels. Channels are available for iTunes, and for online services like YouTube, Vimeo and Revision3. There’s also a remote control feature for Plex Media Center.
Additionally, you can sign up for the myPlex service, which lets you connect to servers shared with you by your friends, queue videos from your web browser to watch later, and connect to your Plex Media Server at home wherever you are in the world via Wi-Fi or a cellular connection, with no configuration necessary!
This particular app has reviews calling for an update to address certain bugs. As one review says, “Great application, but has really annoying bug: when you are listening to music from the sever, song are not switching to next/previous
Please release an update with the fix.”
AmazingWeather HD
AmazingWeather HD beat Baconit in round one, showing how Lumia owners love their weather apps.
It’s a fast and informative weather app with dynamic lockscreens and mix and match live tiles to bring you the ultimate experience on your phone.
Beauty meets brain in AmazingWeather HD; have the most aesthetically pleasing app with live HD animations or a sleek modern look, and get the most weather details in addition to quick 7 days overview, hourly data, charts, warnings, satellite images, detailed forecasts, GPS live tiles, lockscreens and much more!
Reviewers love the apps look and insightful weather info – and the live tiles. Sean says, “Amazing features and is the definition of beautiful simplicity. Well thought out and engineered. Recommended for the live tiles and lock screen options alone.”
Utilities and Productivity
Voters went for the practical options in Round 1 – voting up shortcuts to needed features and nice lockscreen utilities that bring info to you at a glance.
ConnectivityShortcuts
Connectivity Shortcuts allows you to easily access your Wifi, Bluetooth, Cellular, Airplane Mode and Location settings. It also allows you to place shortcuts to each of those directly on your startscreen (you will be taken to the according setting screens).
- Four icon styles to choose from
- Editable Live Tile text
- Tile background can be chosen from all Windows Phne 7 standard accent colors
In the Windows Phone Store, reviewers laud ConnectivityShortcuts functionality and wish the app was built in to Windows Phone natively. “This should be built into Windows Phone. Great app!”
ProShot
Sometimes you just want to take the photo the way YOU want. ProShot gives you that and more…and this is why it advanced handily in Round 1.
One of the first Windows Phone 8 Lenses specifically designed for the photography professional! Unleash the full potential of your phone’s camera with the ProShot camera OS, and discover new creative possibilities with Auto, Program, Manual, and two Custom modes, with the ability to manually adjust:
- Shutter Speed
- ISO
- White Balance
- Exposure Compensation
- Focus
Reviewers love ProShot and say they use it over the native camera app on their Lumia. Omar reports, “Good app, better than the native app, has more options to control”.
Box
Box has taken Windows Phone seriously and built a robust application focused on simple file sharing. It beat a popular AppoinTile in Round 1 and faces off against Battery Level for Windows Phone 8 in Round 2!
With 5GB free, Box makes it easy to access and edit your files, share content and stay connected with your team from anywhere on any device.
* Share important files with your co-workers
* Have your presentation at your fingertips
* Comment on documents on the go
* View updates to your spreadsheet instantly
Box allows you to do all these things and more! More than 120,000 companies – including 92 percent of the Fortune 500, rely on Box for simple, secure content sharing.
According to the reviews in Windows Phone Store, users love the app but wonder why a key feature is missing: “Great app! Why can’t I save a photo on my phone? Please add that feature!
”
Battery Level for Windows Phone 8
Battery Level provides a popular lockscreen notification: exact battery life expressed as a percentage. This handy app beat Camper and now moves on to Round 2.
Battery Level just got better! The app provides a “missing feature” of Windows Phone 8 – the battery level percentage on the main screen and the lock screen. Pin the app to see Live Tile with battery status and remaining charge percentage on Windows Phone 8 main screen and lock screen.
In the reviews, Battery Level is rated highly. Daniel says, “Love it. Best battery app in the market.”

How to tell if you’ll love the JBL PlayUp Wireless Speaker for Nokia
It wasn’t that long ago when mobile music meant carrying a device the size of a small suitcase. The first real boom box, called the Superscope was launched by Marantz in 1976, but the heyday of the ghetto blaster was the eighties, when they just kept getting louder and bigger.
Faster forward to 2013 and you get as much music power in something half the size. What’s more, if it’s the The JBL PlayUp Wireless Speaker for it will stream music from your phone, too. But how do you know if this wireless speaker is right for you? Simple, see if you fulfill these criteria.
You want your music to sound fantastic
Speakers have changed beyond recognition since Bell Labs engineers, Chester W. Rice and Edward W. Kellogg invented the first electrostatic loudspeaker in 1921. With acoustic craftsmanship from JBL, you’ve got great 360 degree all-around quality sound. What’s more, you’ll enjoy clear, loud sound delivered from a specially designed bass port with a power range of 10 watts. In fact, it works like a mini sub to give real oomph to the MP3 tracks on your phone. Trust us, your eardrums will say thank you.
You want to play your music anywhere, with anyone
Robert Browning, the English poet once said. “He who hears music, feels his solitude peopled at once.” Living in Victorian England his idea of chillin’ to tunes was probably more string quartet than Basement Jaxx. That said the sentiment still rings true. If you’re feeling lonely there’s no better cure than cranking up your music. With the The JBL PlayUp for Nokia you can do that anywhere, anytime. Wireless and with an optimal battery life of up to 10 hours, your music goes where you go. Added to that, it plays not just your music but if they have a Bluetooth or NFC enabled device, your friends’ music, too. If you want a party in your pocket, look no further.
You want your music easy
Research has shown that smartphone users are some of the heaviest consumers of music, with 42% claiming to have a collection of between 2-5,000 songs and 27% listening for 4-6 hours per day. But what’s the point of all that if you can’t find a simple way to enjoy it? The JBL PlayUp for Nokia is compatible with all phones, music players and other devices, which support NFC and Bluetooth v. 2.1 + EDR.
What’s more, besides connecting with Bluetooth it can be plugged into any 3.5 mm audio connector. And let’s not forget the design. The tapered shape and rubbery surface make it easy to get a grip, pick it up and take it away. These features combined make all music easy listening.
Has the JBL PlayUp for Nokia ticked all your boxes? If the answer is a passionate yes, we’re willing to bet our entire record collection that you’ll get as loved up with it as we are. And if you’ve already fallen head over heels, why not share details of your musical romance below.
