The big hype, which came along with the release of the Xperia Play, was the fact that Sony would port old-school PlayStation One games to the Xperia Play. Many looked forward to their PS1 favourites on the newly released handset, but the high price those games were available for put a lot of users off. Here comes in Yifan Lu, who after reverse engineering the native PlayStation emulator bundled with the Xperia Play, came up with a solution to run custom ISOs using the built-in software.
The author himself comments:
Now I just need to write the GUI [program to convert ISO to APK]. No more then a day for that. As much as I hate Java in every way, I feel like it would be the easiest way of making a multi-platform tool. I’ll also do a final writeup on my site in a couple of days.
His findings and a to-do list can be found on either his blog or thread he set up on XDA-Developers, a well known developer community. Once he achieves his goal, we can finally crown Xperia Play the king of old-school gaming. Also, Yifan posted up a small teaser video in which he managed to boot Crash Bandicoot 3 with near perfect results.
