Sony Ericsson : Profit Up – Sales Down

Looks like another great quarter for Sony Ericsson as they have managed to push profits for the third consecutive quarter (Q3) this year ending with a net income of 49 million euros thanks to the sales of its smart phones especially its Android range and its improvement in Operating Income.  This is also up a cool 37 million euros over 12 million euros profit they generated in Q2.

Sales were were down at 1.6 billion euros, missing estimates.of 1.82 billion euros but not low enough to affect income. Bert himself seemed quited satisfied with the result -

“Our third consecutive quarter of profitable results illustrates that Sony Ericsson’s overall performance is stabilising. Our strategy to focus on the smartphone segment is succeeding and smartphones now comprise more than 50% of our total sales. During the quarter, we launched our Android-based Xperia™ models in new markets, such as China and the U.S., and it is our ambition to become the global number one handset provider on the Android platform.”

Not bad Sony Ericsson, but I’m afraid you guys have a long way to go if you’ll want to be the “global number one handset provider on the Android platform” starting with rolling out the Eclair 2.1 Update sooner.

The Mobile Phone: Winners & Losers

We’re in a period of almost constant change and there is no industry that embodies that quite like the mobile industry. Over the past three years the landscape has changed almost beyond all recognition with the established manufacturers giving way to the up and coming players. So just who is leading the pack these days?

Asymco have produced a series of graphs that attempts to answer that question. The first graph we see shows how the various manufacturers have performed over the past three years with respect to market and profit share. If the arrow is going up then profit share is going up, going down and profit share is going down. If the arrow is heading right then marketshare is increasing, heading left and it’s decreasing.

You will notice that Sony Ericsson’s arrow points in all the wrong directions. Profit share is down and so is marketshare. They’re the mirror image of RIM, which has steadily increased both. Notice also that Nokia and Apple are mirroring each other. Whilst neither company’s marketshare has risen or fallen dramatically their profit share has undergone some very dramatic changes.

In the two graphs below we can compare how each of the companies has changed over the last three years.

Again it is not good news for Sony Ericsson. In 2007 they had the third highest profit share and their marketshare was in the top four. Indeed they were only behind the real heavy hitters of Nokia, Samsung and Motorola (yes Motorola was a heavy hitter). That’s a pretty good position for a relatively small manufacturer.

Let’s fast forward to 2010 and Sony Ericsson are a shadow of their former selves. Profit share has gone into free fall and instead of being one of the highest is now one of the lowest. Unlike Nokia, which has managed to stem its marketshare decline even as profit share declines, Sony Ericsson has also seen its marketshare crumble away.

In 2007 Sony Ericsson was positioned to make a transition out of the ‘Marginal’ group, but just three short years later that seems like a pipe dream. Before we get too gloomy though Sony Ericsson has been taking some important steps to get itself back on track. For one thing they have made some painful cost saving moves not to mention embracing Android (even if they do need to move faster) and of course they have wisely ditched the shackle that is Symbian (Angus: they got rid of UIQ too!). Hopefully we see that little Sony Ericsson turning around and pointing up!

AmbientTime Brings Live Wallpaper To X10

One of the things I really enjoy about my HTC Desire is live wallpapers(Mario ftw!). Sadly this isn’t something that Sony Ericsson’s flagship Android device, the X10, can support at the moment. My X10 would sit there looking pretty with its static wallpaper sure, but live is where it’s at these days. Well hold onto your hats folks because the boys at Sony Ericsson Japan have released something called ‘AmbientTime Home Launcher’, which will let you use live wallpaper on your X10.

‘AmbientTime’ is basically a fancy pants new home launcher for the X10 and it doesn’t just give you live wallpaper, it also bumps your homescreens up to 5 and introduces a rather swanky looking lockscreen too. At this point you will be wondering what the catch is …

… well, for starters the smart new lockscreen is pretty laggy and maddeningly the default lockscreen will show up if you receive a call. That’s not all though because customisation isn’t a word AmbientTime understands, the wallpapers it comes with cannot be changed.

If you still want to give it a whirl download the apk.

X8 Coming To O2 UK

O2 looks to be landing itself an exclusive on the forthcoming Sony Ericsson X8 in the UK. O2’s October product catalogue lists the handset at £129.99 for PAYG and it’s branded as ‘Only on O2′. The price point is actually pretty good considering that the X8 is broadly comparable to the X10 Mini. The screen is bigger than the X10 Mini’s of course, but the camera is a bit weaker at 3.2 MP compared with the X10 Mini’s 5 MP sensor.

The downside tot his, and you knew there had to be a downside, is that it’s an exclusive on O2. Why is that a downside? Well O2 are not exactly the bets network in the UK. Not that any networks is perfect of course, but the frequent data outages and network failures don’t help their image any. Maybe the exclusivity won’t last … here’s hoping.

X10 Mini Pro Review

Having owned an X10 at one point I approached the X10 Mini Pro with some hesitation, would this be another Android handset from Sony Ericsson that didn’t live up to its promise or would it manage to break out of that mould?

Sony Ericsson Working On Win Phone 7 Device

The head of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 UK division has confirmed that Sony Ericsson are working on a Windows Phone 7 handset. Oded Ran, the Microsoft executive in question, made the comment in an interview with mymicrosoftlife.com and he actually went a little farther than that. His actual comment was:

Sony Ericsson is working on at least one Windows Phone 7 device

So it looks like there is not one, but perhaps more Windows Phone 7 handsets on the way from Sony Ericsson. Annoyingly there is no word on when this device will likely come to market, but we can hope that it is amongst the first wave of devices or at the very least appears before the end of the year.  Of course this comes not long after Sony Ericsson announced that they were effectively ditching Symbian (huzzah!) so some may wonder if they are over stretching themselves again. To be fair though Windows Phone 7 has been gaining a lot of traction and getting a handset out early could allow Sony Ericsson to gain some traction with the nascent platform. Here’s hoping anyway!
