Das schnurlose DECT-Telefon, welches seit der Jahrhundertwende als aktueller Standard gilt, ermöglicht die digitale Telekommunikation. Seit 1984 auf dem Markt als CT1 und CT2 erhältlich, wurde für dieses Übertragungsverfahren das Kabelnetz lediglich ab der Basisstation zum Aufbau des Gespräches genutzt, jedoch zwischen Handgerät und Basisstation der Kontakt per Funk hergestellt. Aufgrund möglicher Störungen durch andere Funkdienste sind beide Standards ab 2009 von der Bundesnetzagentur verboten worden. Moderne Weiterentwicklungen sind selbstverständlich zugelassen, denn die Mobilität dank der Funkverbindungen konnte sich mit Bravour durchsetzen.

Die schnurlose Variante wird gegenüber dem schnurgebundenen Telefon bevorzugt, zieht jedoch qualitative Einschränkungen in Bezug auf die Sprachverständlichkeit nach sich. Die Mobilität der Schnurlosigkeit überzeugt den Verbraucher allerdings und stellt die Qualität eher in den Hintergrund. Der neue DECT-Standard CAT-iq – auch unter HD im Gespräch – soll diesen Makel weitestgehend beseitigen. Einzige Hürde ist hier die entstehende Funkstrahlung (elektromagnetische Wellen), welche zwar geringer als bei Handys ist, dennoch aber eine Hemmschwelle darstellt. Doch daran wird auf Hochtouren gearbeitet. Der sogenannte Eco-Modus soll die Strahlung, welche bei den bequemen Schnurlos-Telefonen 24 Stunden rund um die Uhr allgegenwärtig ist, weitestgehend minimieren. Namhafte Hersteller bieten diese moderne Funktion bereits in unterschiedlichen Variationen an.
