Football for social change – Future Goals 2014

As an official sponsor of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM we get to be closely involved in with some the of best sport and entertainment on the planet; the goals of Messi, the technique of Neymar, and the incredible support of the fans.

Best of all, our partnership with the 2014 FIFA World CupTM allows us to help make a real difference to those who need it…

This week 35 inspiring young people from over 20 countries will gather in Rio to participate in the Future Goals Youth Forum on Football for Social Change – a forum which will explore the power of football to change lives in the real world.

This group of unique individuals, all aged between 18–29, have faced a life of hardship, but have excelled when it comes to social responsibility and engaging with their community.

Each represents a grassroots organisation from their local community which uses football to address social issues amongst young people, such as preventing HIV/AIDS in Africa, fighting racism in Europe, or promoting gender equality in Latin America.

The group will then take part in a series of workshops and discussions around the topic of youth leadership and social change, to help them understand their role as leaders in their communities and development through football.

The forum, which is sponsored by Sony and takes place between 27–30 June, is organised by streetfootballworld. Working with them, Sony will provide grants to eight of the participants who will receive 5,000 euros to go towards a project in their community.

We caught up with Mirella Domenich, Managing Director of streetfootballworld Brasil, and Roy White, SVP Human Resources at Sony Mobile, to understand more….

“It’s going to be extraordinary to have young people from 22 different countries come together and discuss the future of football for social change – right here in Rio during the World Cup!” explains Mirella.

“Indeed, being able to support 35 young leaders in making their local community project really makes us extremely proud,” adds Roy.

“We believe that football has the power to motivate people to make a positive change in their community, which is why we have supported streetfootballworld since its early days.”

Continues Mirella: “Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen that the demand for answers to social questions is higher than ever and it’s the next generation of young leaders that can bring the necessary change.”
